a lesson from Nuremberg

Little tidbit from the Nuremberg trials that took place after World War 2 I came across the other day and thought you’d be interested to see Jim.

“The voluntary consent of the human subject is absolutely essential.

This means that the person involved should have the legal capacity to give consent;

should be so situated as to be able to exercise free power of choice, without the intervention of any element of force, fraud, deceit, duress, over-reaching, or other ulterior form of constraint or coercion;

and should have sufficient knowledge and comprehension of the elements of the subject matter involved as to enable him to make an understanding and enlightened decision.”


This is comes directly from Trials of War Criminals Before The Nuremberg Military Tribunals, Volume 2, The Medical Case.

In other words, after one of the most horrific events ever enacted to a substantial portion of an entire population in modern history…

these are the standards we all got together and decided it would be a good idea to hold those in power accountable to pertaining to medical issues going forward.

Has the effort to help people “make an understanding and enlightened decision” been genuine?

Now that entire classes of the population are faced with losing their jobs, right to travel and conduct commerce

how are we doing on avoiding any “ulterior form of constraint or coercion?”

No matter where anyone stands on whether people “should” or “should not” go through with the issue present day…

I think it would behoove us all to take a big step back, take a look at fairly recent history, and ask ourselves how far we’re willing to go with this.

I can’t begin to describe how terrifying it was to realize we had lost our freedom to choose what’s best for our child when Ryder was diagnosed with stage four cancer seven years ago, and what an overwhelmingly joyous day it was when we managed to get it back…

but now I fear UNLESS we can collectively decide what is ULTIMATELY most important, we’ll all be headed back down that same road together.

IMPORTANT NOTE to not end on an overly gloomy tone - I have the utmost confidence that nothing is set in stone.

The word UNLESS was capitalized for a very important reason, as it’s from one of the most profound quotes from a children’s book ever to be written, The Lorax by Dr. Suess. :)

What does it mean to be mindful of your emotions? Being mindful involves creating space to reflect on whatever you're feeling, using a nonjudgmental stance.

When you find yourself experiencing intense emotion, acknowledge its presence and the story attached to it. When they seem too unbearable, remind yourself that you’re bigger than your feelings and that they are not facts.

At this point, taking deep breaths ensures that the emotions don't overwhelm you. This will help you create a bit of distance between yourself and your emotions.

A Simple Elderberry Syrup Recipe For Cold And Flu Season

Hi Jimi,

As the weather starts getting colder up here in the northern hemisphere, our little family has a number of fun herbal preparations that we love to make together.

One of our favorite go-to remedies (that we use all fall and winter long) is elderberry syrup.

The berries of the elderberry tree are packed with vitamins and anti-oxidants that are proven to boost your immune system. They're also a great source of quercetin, a strong anti-inflammatory that is shown to help prevent respiratory infections. Long story short, elderberry is definitely a player you want on your immunity team!

As usual, our ancestors were in on the secret. In fact, people have been preparing this concoction for thousands of years for two main reasons: it’s delicious and it works!

Below I’ve shared the Polizzi family recipe for elderberry syrup. Enjoy!

Ingredients

• 1 cup dried elderberries (or 2 cups of fresh berries, if you can find them)
• 4 cups water
• ½ cup honey

Preparation

Step 1: Using a sauce pan or small pot, add the elderberries (dried or fresh) to 4 cups of water and simmer for one hour.

Step 2: Strain the berries and place them in the compost.

Step 3: Put the remaining elderberry juice back in the pot, bringing it to a simmer.

Step 4: Add ½ cup honey, making sure it completely melts and infuses creating the perfect elderberry syrup.

Step 5: Bottle and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks. (Honey acts as a preservative - but since this recipe has half the typical honey added to a medicinal syrup, make sure to refrigerate.)

I hope you enjoy this delicious remedy as much as we do in my house!

*-- Cracking Your Back Feels So Good...But Is It Bad For You? --*​

When someone 'cracks' his or her back, often it comes from twisting from one side to another. So when this happens, you might hear a 'pop' and this cracking of the back is generated from that persons bones in the back shifting within their hinges and joints as they stack on top of one another. In other words, nothing is actually "cracking" or breaking.

We really don't have a strict scientific understanding of why cracking feels good, but gently shifting of our bones where they hinge seems to release pressure that built up in the joints in the back. This leads to temporary relief of stiffness. Keyword: Temporary.

Moral of the story is you should still go easy on the back cracking. Purposeful back cracking may be associated with increased strain at the different joints in the back. So what does that really mean? It's fine to crack your back on occasion but don't go overboard. If you do too much cracking of the back or neck, there are reports of acceleration of the wear and tear of the joint (i.e., hinges) requiring additional intervention including surgical intervention.

There is a way to avoid a lot of the problems involved with the healthcare system, but it comes with a hitch — you have to be able to afford it.

This model, called concierge medicine, offers healthcare coverage for a monthly or annual charge. Fees can cost around $2,500 per year, although some practices charge much more. Essentially, the fee is a retainer that enables doctors to bypass insurance companies and government programs altogether.

This model is proving so attractive that the American Academy of Private Physicians, an association that represents these doctors, says its membership is growing by as much as 6% annually.

Some practices will bill third-party payers for services their patients’ policies reimburse; others charge a higher annual cost for all-inclusive services; and some look to patients to pay additional out-of-pocket costs.
