'Central Obesity' Signals Greater Heart Risk

People of "normal" weight who sport a wide waist are more at risk of heart problems than obese people, say researchers.

How fat is distributed on a person's frame determined disease risk as much as how much fat they had overall, according to an investigation of nearly 1,700 people aged 45 and over.

Even people who are not classified overweight on the body mass index (BMI) scale should be concerned if they have an "apple" shape with a waist wider than their hips, called "central obesity," said research leader Jose Medina-Inojosa of the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

In the study, 1,692 residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, had their weight, height, waist, and hip circumference measured between 1997 and 2000. They were monitored until 2016 for cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and stroke.

Participants with a normal BMI but central obesity had a two-fold higher long-term risk of disease than pear-shaped participants — even technically obese ones, the research found.

BMI is a ratio of height to weight used to divide people into low- or high-risk categories for developing heart disease, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, or certain cancers. A person with a BMI of 25 or more is considered overweight, and 30 or higher obese.

"If you have fat around your belly and it's greater than the size of your hips, visit your doctor to assess your cardiovascular health and fat distribution," Medina-Inojosa said. "If you have central obesity, the target will be waist loss rather than weight loss."

You've probably heard the old adage, "you are what you eat"...
But have you considered the fact that what you eat can actually affect your vaginal health?
That's right!
Your vagina is home to a complex ecosystem of microscopic bacteria known as the vaginal microbiome.
And when this colony of bacteria is strong, it can protect you from yeast infections, sexually transmitted diseases, and urinary tract infections.
When it's weak, the bad actors from the bacterial colony and outside sources are more likely to be able to wreak havoc on your poor lady bits.
And that's not all.
What you eat can also affect your hormones. Which in turn affects your vagina. You see, when estrogen levels drop, your vulva and vaginal tissues tend to thin.
Which means you've got a greater chance of developing those pesky vaginal infections. Making sure you're not exacerbating the situation with foods that bring *more* hormones into your body are critically important.
So, what's a responsible vagina owner to do?
Glad you asked. In this article, I'm breaking down what foods to avoid, what foods to get more of in your diet, and my best overall tips for keeping things running smoothly down there.
Let's dig in
First off, let's talk about what foods can make things difficult for your vagina to function at its best.
Maybe not surprisingly, this is actually a list of the most common foods we're told to avoid for many health reasons.

FOODS TO AVOID

1. Sugar
Excess sugar is bad news for your gut and vaginal microbiome. Sugar is added to just about everything these days, from spaghetti sauce to salad dressing - so you can easily go over your daily limit without even enjoying something sweet! Sugar is a favorite food of those bad bacteria lurking in your microbiome, so when you eat too much, it's easy for the bad bacteria like candida to overrun the population... and yeast infections can result.
2. Wheat and Gluten
Gluten is a protein that's found in wheat, barley and rye — and it's common in heavily processed foods. Gluten can cause issues, even if you don't have celiac disease (an autoimmune disease where eating gluten destroys the small intestine lining). So, you may want to try cutting it out for a while and see how your vagina feels as a result.
3. Processed Foods and Refined Carbohydrates
A diet that's rich in processed foods is dangerous because these foods often contain higher levels of unhealthy fats, sugars, and calories than less refined options. Processed foods are often easier to chew and swallow which means you're more likely to consume more...which means excess weight and the health risks that accompany it. And, as researchers showed, the negative effects from overly refined foods don't just come from cookies, cakes, and french fries. Processed foods include canned soups and grains in a microwave pouch.
4. Alcohol
Alcohol can rob your body of moisture... hence the dehydrated, hangover feeling you get when you've had too much. And since your vagina is lined with a mucous membrane that relies on moisture to function properly, alcohol is generally a not-so-great beverage to consume if you're concerned about keeping your vagina juicy. Plus, drinking alcohol in excess can lead to sexual dysfunction and interrupt sleep, two things that certainly do not make for a happy woman.
5. Meat and Dairy Containing Artificial Hormones
Some common and conventional farming methods involve treating livestock with hormones to increase growth and milk production. Unfortunately, this means that the steroids, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone that animals may be implanted with can wind up in the animal products you're eating... which can disrupt the delicate balance of hormones that help control vaginal health. Try to opt for humanely raised, free-range, and organic options when you can.
This is where things get fun and interesting...because when it comes to a healthy vagina, the key is really to simply eat real food. It's not complicated. But it can be difficult in these times of convenience foods and drive-thru everything. Believe me, I get it.

Breathe deeply, focusing on how each breath fills your lungs and how it feels to release it.

This will help you refocus on what’s happening in the present moment.

The more you practice this technique, the easier it will be to tackle anxiety in difficult situations. Be patient with yourself.

SIBO Warning About Folate Supplementation​

Since many people are dealing with SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), I thought I should mention something I learned recently ...

Certain bacteria that may be overgrown in SIBO feed on folate, so if you are taking any B vitamin supplements with folate in them, they could be promoting the continued overgrowth of these bacteria in the small intestine.

In addition, bacteria that are often overgrown in SIBO produce a lot of folate, so you may already be getting enough folate as a result of the SIBO.

Fall-Related Deaths Increasing

Shifting your attention away from unpleasant thoughts is only one of many tools that can help you calm down in a difficult situation.

There are other methods you can try to combat anxiety. Sometimes it can help to actually think of the worst-case scenarios.

It sounds counterproductive, however, it may turn out to be a helpful tool in difficult times. Set aside a fixed amount of time to write down all the worst-case scenarios running through your mind.

Then make a list of the positive changes you can make to cope with the experience. Logically exploring these scenarios will diminish the power your fears have over you.

Once you have accepted those possibilities, you can return to the present and just do the best you can.

Understanding the benefits and dangers of elderberries

Elderberry is not some recent discovery, fad or gimmick. It has been in use for centuries as a medical remedy for a wide variety of symptoms. The National Institute of Health explains that elderberry flowers and leaves have been used for pain relief and to treat inflammation, swelling and stimulate urine production. The bark of the plant can also be used as a laxative. According to the European Medicines Agency, the berries have also been used in folk medicine to treat infection, influenza, chest pain, headaches and several other symptoms. While the berry has found use throughout history, the question is whether evidence is supportive or purely anecdotal and if the benefits outweigh the potential risks.

Benefits of the Berry


There are several benefits to taking elderberry or supplements that use elderberry. They are nutritious, vitamin-rich and packed with antioxidants, and the edible parts of the plant are low in calories. According to NIH studies, antioxidant-rich foods and diets can help prevent the development of chronic diseases. The over-processing of elderberries can potentially reduce the potency and effectiveness of the fruit, but there still may be supplemental benefits.


Treatment Options


The berries and flowers of the elderberry plant help to boost the immune system, which makes them useful in promoting your immune response, quelling inflammation and protecting your heart. Some specialists suggest consuming elderberry to reduce flu and cold symptoms, but that is not all. Elderberry has also been used successfully to treat several conditions.

  • Headaches
  • Constipation
  • Chest infections
  • Fever
  • Skin conditions
  • Kidney problems
  • Epilepsy
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Stress
  • HIV and AIDS
Best in Combination


While elderberry performs well under lab conditions, more research is needed to substantiate every claim. However, the plant is effective as a health boost. Granted, elderberry alone will not cure your flu or other infection, but it can help limit the severity. Most physicians agree that elderberry is a safe addition to a healthy diet, but that for overall health and well-being, it should be used in combination with routine medical visits.


Potential Risks


While elderberry has many benefits, it is not something you want to pick wild without having prior knowledge. The European Medicines Agency explains that consumption of the bark, seeds or unripe berries can cause stomach problems because of the presence of lectins. Also, the NIH warns of the presence of cyanogenic glycosides, which may produce cyanide. However, commercial preparations and government regulations eliminate these potential risks, meaning the danger only comes from consuming wild berries.

How to Maintain a Healthy Colon

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:


How can you make sure you have better bowel movements? The first step is to drink adequate amounts of water. I can’t stress that enough. There is no way you can have healthy bowels if you’re dehydrated.

To get enough water, simply take your weight in pounds and divide the number by two. That number is the minimum amount of water, in ounces, you need to drink every day.

A stool culture can help identify an overgrowth of bad bacteria, parasites, or yeast. It can also provide information on the amounts of healthy bacteria in the GI tract, and provide levels of inflammatory markers.

When I order stool cultures from patients, I have them sent to specialized laboratories that know how to properly handle and assess the specimens. I currently use Doctor’s Data or Genova Diagnostics. (I have no financial interests in either company.)

My experience with using hospital-based labs has not been good. Once the results are obtained, a plan can be developed to correct any dysbiosis (bacterial imbalance) in the gut. When the gut bacteria levels are restored to a more healthy state, other health problems usually improve.

Certain nutrients can be helpful for promoting a healthy gut. Although each person is a unique biochemical individual with his or her own needs, we can make a few general suggestions for better gut health.

Imbalances of gut flora can be improved, first of all, by taking good prebiotic and probiotic supplements, which provide nutrients for the normal flora as well as supplying the colon with healthy bacteria to repopulate it.

Vitamin C at a dose of 3,000 mg to 6,000 mg per day is also beneficial for gut flora and helps to relieve constipation. For those who are severely constipated, up to 10,000 mg per day of powdered buffered vitamin C along with 2,000 mg to 4,000 mg of magnesium may be required.

But be aware that too much vitamin C and magnesium can actually cause problems of their own. If you get loose stools with vitamin C or magnesium, simply lower the amount until the diarrhea resolves.
