Do You Need a Specialist, or a Generalist?​

When we have a particular condition, we tend to think that we need to see a specialist, and this is certainly true in many situations.
If you need brain surgery, you go to a neurosurgeon, not a general practitioner or an orthopedic surgeon. it requires a very specialized skill.
On the other hand, if you suspect or know that you have Lyme disease, or psoriasis, or whatever, is it as clear that you should visit a specialist?
It may or may not be a good idea to go to a specialist depending on whether they think that the condition exists in a vacuum as an isolated entity.
In the example of Lyme disease, it rarely if ever exists without other conditions and predisposing or triggering factors that also need to be resolved.
This is why so many people struggle to resolve Lyme disease, chronic fatigue, gut dysfunction, psoriasis, etc.
Lyme disease is rarely only Lyme disease; fatigue usually has multiple simultaneous causes; gut dysfunction is usually not the only thing going on; and psoriasis is probably not merely an autoimmune disease.
In fact, there are at least two ways of treating psoriasis in some people that do not appear to have anything to do with addressing autoimmunity.
And some scientists now question whether psoriasis is even an autoimmune disease because some of the evidence does not line for it being autoimmunity.
Some researchers and practitioners now consider the symptoms of Lyme disease to be the result of a dysregulated immune response to the Lyme pathogens, rather than resulting from the pathogens themselves.
The point is that many conditions may not be what they have seemed to be.
We must question everything, something I learned to during my education at one of the world's premier research institutions, Stanford University.
And in your quest for better health perhaps you would be best-served by working with somebody who questions everything.
Whereas if you work with somebody that always treats Lyme disease as only Lyme disease or psoriasis merely as an "autoimmune disease", treatment can go nowhere, and in the case of Lyme disease even make things worse.
A Lyme disease "specialist" had better also be a "generalist" to the extent that they understand how many other factors can be at play that may be even more important than the Lyme pathogens.
The most obvious example is mold toxicity, which is one of the main factors driving Lyme disease and immune system dysregulation.
Many people have Lyme or other pathogens in them without symptoms.
But when some immunity-suppressing or dysregulating factor is present, like mold, then the Lyme pathogens can become an issue.
Same thing with something like Epstein-Barr Virus.
Something like 95% of the population has Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), and most of these people do not have any issues because the EBV is dormant.
But then something causes massive stress and/or suppresses immunity, and the EBV gets reactivated and/or is no longer adequately controlled by the immune system.
One of the factors that can reactivate EBV is a certain "novel virus" that has beset and preoccupied us for the past two+ years and can become chronic.
If the focus remains on the EBV, the treatment may go nowhere. The stressors, suppressors, and dysregulators have to be identified and addressed.
So if you suspect Lyme or EBV or whatever, or even have lab test evidence suggesting that something like this is active, do you need a specialist?
I'd say that depends on whether they see the world through "Lyme-colored" glasses, or "EBV-colored", "parasite-colored", "virus-of-the-year", or other "pathogen-or-autoimmune-disease-of-the-decade-colored" glasses.
If the practitioner is a "certain pathogen hammer" looking for a "certain pathogen nail" to beat on, they might not serve you as well as somebody who always seeks to understand the broader context for what is going on.
And that starts to move into the territory of "generalist".
In my experience, there needs to be a balance between specialty and generalism in the interest of holism, and it's a continuum or spectrum.
And generalists tend to be much more holistic than specialists.
Where on that continuum between speciality and generalism is ideal depends on your situation.
I think that for most health issues, "depth generalism" may be your best bet.
"Depth generalism" is a term I just made up to describe somebody that looks deeply and in sufficient detail at everything yet maintains a broad, "30,000-foot" view and perspective, never losing sight of the forest or getting lost in the trees.
This is somebody that keeps a focus on root causes (predisposing factors and triggers) as well as mediators (discussed in a previous email about whether gut dysfunction is a root cause or not).
If you've been let down by the fragmented world of specialists that focus too much on one thing or another and also may not dig deeply enough into true root causes, perhaps more of a "depth generalist" approach would serve you better.

8 Strategies to Lower Blood Pressure Naturally

For many people, hypertension can be a persistent problem. Only about one in four American adults with high blood pressure have it under control, and millions have readings that put them in the significantly high category.

Blood pressure treatment used to emphasize prescription drugs. But in recent years this thinking has changed somewhat. Ask your doctor if these natural strategies could help you control your blood pressure:

Special: Beat Heart Disease Without Drugs or Surgery

Lose weight. A loss of 10 pounds is generally enough to eliminate one blood pressure medication.

Get active. Three 10-minute walks daily is as effective as one for 30 minutes in lowering blood pressure, according to research. Add weight lifting to increase the benefits.

Become a label reader. To manage blood pressure, you need to ferret out hidden sources of salt, which you can only do by reading the labels on every food item you buy to weed out products with sodium.

Eat foods high in potassium. Potassium, found in avocadoes, potatoes, spinach, bananas, tomatoes, cabbage, sprouts, beans, and pomegranates, can help balance blood pressure.

Get flavanols from fruit. Make sure your diet includes such foods as tea, apples, and berries, which contain flavanols and may help reduce blood pressure.

Have a cup of leafy vegetables daily. Eat high-nitrate food, which includes beet roots and leafy greens, Chinese cabbage, leeks, celery, radishes, and turnips.

Eliminate or cut down on alcohol. Long-term overuse can lead to a permanent increase in blood pressure.

Cut out stimulants. Coffee, tea, caffeine-laced beverages, and chocolate can all contribute to high blood pressure.
