Treating Your Head to Treat Your Gut​

When it comes to the microbiome aspect of gut health, it's important to realize that it starts in your head.
Each of us produces about 1.5 liters of mucus in the collection of air passages that include the nose, sinuses, mouth, throat, and lungs.
And we swallow most of it.
Very often the mucus membranes lining these passages is colonized with dysbiotic bacteria and fungal organisms, and sometimes even parasites.
So every time you swallow mucus, you may be innoculating your gut with dysbiotic bugs, especially if your stomach is not acidic enough to kill them.
This is one of the reasons that people struggle to correct their microbiome.
No matter how many great probiotics they take, a flood of dysbiotic bugs is cascading down from their "head" (and throat and lungs) into their belly.
In fact, I believe that dysbiotic oral bacteria were the reason I got appendicitis 10 years ago at a time that it seemed I had finally perfected my gut health.
I had been drinking water from water bottles that I was reusing but not regularly washing, and oral "back wash" was probably growing oral bugs in the bottles.
Even though I had done very well in using probiotics and fermented vegetables to shift my microbiome, I paid a price for my lack of awareness of the oral microbiome, combined with the lack of bottle hygiene. ultimately losing my appendix and acquiring a bunch of titanium staples in my gut.
To succeed in transforming your gut health, it really helps--and is very often essential--to take a complete "top-to-bottom" approach.
A key step is to kill the dysbiotic organisms in the nose, sinuses, mouth, throat, and lungs before or the same time you improve stomach acid production, bile production, gut motility, gut microbome, etc.
This can be done by nebulizing and inhaling various substances.
Nasal sprays alone are often not enough because they only access part of the nasal passages.
A good nebulizing protocol is sometimes all that is necessary to correct stubborn gut health issues because once the dysbiotic mucus cascade is cleaned up, the gut microbiome can often reorganize itself on its own.
I will soon be releasing a "top-to-bottom" gut health transformation system to members of the Bio-Individual Blueprint program that will include several customizable nebulizing protocols.

I did an interview this past week for a podcast about actors who decided to make a major career change into acting, either for the first time or after being away in another career for awhile. Of course cancer came up because that really was the catalyst for me, for so much in my life but absolutely for getting back into acting. The host herself had lost a parent to cancer, and both of us expressed what to some I’m sure would seem odd: a sense of gratitude to the traumas in our life, because going through them made us who we are and taught us so very much.

We spend so much of our lives constraining ourselves to the expectations of society, of our family, of our social circle, of our partners. In my case, I realised that had played a huge role in my initial stepping away from acting. I didn’t want to rock the boat, I didn’t want to cause difficulties in the relationship I was in at the time, and my self-confidence hadn’t been great in a long time.

But when cancer came knocking, I took control of my health and my life, for the first time in a long time. I had to develop confidence in myself, nurture a relationship and trust in my intuition, and face the scariest thing that had ever happened to me and get through it. And all of that set. me. free. Free from all that I had tried to force myself to be, free from self doubt, free from fear. Free to be who I had always wanted to be but had somehow convinced myself I couldn’t be. It’s a process that of course continues to this day, but cancer showed me the path to take to get there.

And during my conversation on the podcast, I realised that there was this beautiful full circle in my life and with acting. My reaction to my dad’s passing from cancer was to become the people pleaser that allowed those feelings to push her away from acting, and it was my own cancer journey that brought me back to it, that brought me back to myself, the person I was before his death. After all, if I couldn’t fully embody myself, how could I ever hope to fully embody a character as an actor?

There is no one else on this earth like you. You have unique gifts and talents and light to shine on the world. You were chosen for this life for a reason. You have a difference to make here. You have dreams to pursue and achieve, and by doing so, you will show others that theirs are possible too. Don’t leave this life without freeing yourself to do all you are meant to do.

Diet and Nutrition: Recipes​

It was my mother-in-law’s birthday recently, and we had them over for dinner. They are following a keto diet at the moment, and so we made them a delicious low-carb meal that fits very well into an anticancer diet too. Using zoodles (spiralized zucchini, or “zucchini noodles”) instead of pasta and coconut cream to give it that Alfredo feel resulted in a super delicious, lemony, low-carb meal that I will definitely be making again! I also paired it with one of the tastiest salads I’ve had in a while, with bright citrus that makes it perfect for the approaching summer. It was so good that I forgot to take a picture before I got to the last bite! When I make it again, I will update with a proper picture

Tips and Tools: Meditation​

In addition to Dr. V's blog, I shared some other resources to help with meditating.There were two apps that I found helpful when I was starting out with meditation: Calm and Headspace. Both of these have free versions where you can access a certain number of mediations, sleep aids, etc., so you can see if you like it, and then there is always the option to purchase access to the full library.

There are also a seemingly unlimited number of meditations on YouTube! I shared some of my favourites, but the list is way too long to fit here, so if you don't have Facebook and would like to see the list, reply to this email and I would be happy to send them along.

And finally, there is a super cool device from a company I have posted about before called HeartMath. It not only helps you start meditating with its guided breathing tool, but it also helps you teach your heart to be in a state called “coherence”, a heart rate that is even and harmonious and therefore sends messages to the brain that we are safe, calm, and happy, reducing stress signals and therefore decreasing our brain’s reinforcement of a stress state. If you want to learn more about HRV (heart rate variability), the science behind it, and how HeartMath devices help you achieve coherence more often, check out my previous post on it.

Remember, you don’t have to meditate for hours and hours; even 5 minutes is enough to reap benefits! Set aside 5 minutes for yourself and your emotional and mental health today.

In my first year after diagnosis, I started to have realizations about different things I was learning from cancer: ways I was changing, positive growth I was experiencing, and how my perspective on life was shifting. I started writing them down, and it is something that I continue today. Tips and Tools: Conventional Treatment​

Every healing path is welcome here at Solis, and many of us take either an integrative route that combines conventional and natural treatments, or take the conventional route first before reducing risk of recurrence after with natural/alternative modalities. One of the best ways to use natural medicine in conjunction with conventional treatments is to reduce the toxicity and therefore the side effects of conventional treatments, which are of course notoriously hard on the body.

Rick Shapiro, whom you may recognize from the interviews I hosted for both Heal Your Spirit, Heal Your Body as well as imPOWERED, is a member of an organisation called the Annie Appleseed Project, which aims to challenge the existing treatment paradigm, to question the existing research methods and subjects, and to propose new directions for both, with the goal of true integrative oncology becoming the standard of care. They have a really helpful document with a few ways that you can use natural therapies and substances to reduce both the toxicity of conventional treatments as well as the side effects.

I’ve learned that there are A LOT of potential root causes of cancer including inflammation, poor sleep, chronic stress, blood sugar and metabolism issues, excess weight, cellular and DNA damage, toxic burden, hormone imbalances, poor gut health, heavy metals, lowered immune function, and on and on I could go. To complicate things, many of these issues are impacted by or lead to others in the list, so it can be a domino effect of sorts when even one or two things get out of whack. I hope this is alright, couldn't find a general health area, Hint, hint

For those of you who don't know me or my story here is a very brief:
I was diagnosed with terminal late stage 4 aggressive cancer back in early summer of 2015. They told me there was nothing they could to to kill or stop it. They said I had 2 to 4 years to live and as far along as it was I would be lucky to make it two. So scared I agreed to take "some" treatments which had me on my death bed in about 6 months or so. They kept pushing chemo but I never let them.
Then I seen a post by our lovely @TygerTyger about The Truth About Cancer, "SHE" (Tyger Tyger) Saved my life with that info and started me on my own healing journey ( thank you Tyger and God bless you)<3. I have researched for many years now and get about 150 various health related articles daily that I would like to share with you and our community, yes, because I care about my friends health. I will try to pick out some articles on everything I can so there is something for everybody. You can't imagine just how much I wish I would of known this info many years ago, I sure wouldn't be suffering in this boat I am in now:rolleyes:. I wouldn't want anyone to have to go through this nightmare

Jimi, I come to this thread now and then to see what's up. You post a lot of the alternative health media I read regularly. This is the first time I've read your opening statement for the thread.

Have you ever heard of chaga mushroom tea? There is one guy whose podcasts I listen to, who swears by it. He survived cancer, survived chemo, survived all the medical mafia crap, then was diagnosed AGAIN with cancer. He walked away from it all. No more. He swears by chaga tea, drinks it every day. He cited it also as a preventive, along with pey0te, that was used by native Americans who were being gifted with smallpox infected blankets by the European invaders (that was a real thing that was done, not a mythical canard). And no, he's not selling it.

A couple of years ago a friend gifted me with a box of the chaga mushroom tea bags, no other ingredients in it. It tastes just like tea, and I drink my tea and coffee black anyway. It's wonderful, and strangely enough, as the demand for it has grown, the price has come down.

Thank you my friend, I have never tried chaga tea but get chaga mushroom when I can afford it. When I was diagnosed they told me it was terminal and if I didn't start chemo that I only had 2 to 3 years to live, with chemo they said I would gain 6 months to a year, maybe. They had me scared to death andalmost got me to do chemo Then I seen @TigerTiger's post about TTAC (the truth about cancer) series that was comin up and after watchin that I thought what have I got to lose I sure wasn't gonna do the chemo, thank you @TigerTiger and bless you for gettin me started on natural treatment of cancer you truly gave me more life, and since then I have seen many different series on cancer and have combined most of them in some way and somehow got this far. It will be 7 years in July and I feel great most days. I also eat turkey tail mushrooms for my cancer, I forage for them.

Hey there Jimi,
Many dieticians and nutritionists believe people often require more water than they get, even following federal guidelines — eight glasses per day. According to Sarah Krieger, a registered dietician nutritionist, a more accurate or adequate model is to take half of your body weight and drink that in ounces, meaning a 140-pound individual would drink 70 oz.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine makes the process even easier, recommending men drink a minimum of 13 cups of fluids per day and women drink nine or more. In other words, men should aim for 104 oz. and women for 72 oz.

How do you fit all that liquid into your day? First, pay attention to the wording. The suggestion is for fluids, not just water. However, it is crucial to up your water intake, and that is a straightforward process when you know the most optimum times to drink.

Wake-Up

Many people do not realize they wake up in the morning already dehydrated. You do not drink for the eight hours you are asleep. Therefore, help your body replenish itself by drinking one to two cups of water when you wake, eight to 16 ounces.

Once you have one or two cups, feel free to make yourself a cup of coffee. Coffee also counts toward your fluid intake for the day.

Pre-Meal, Mealtime, and Post-Meal

Many studies suggest that drinking water can help regulate and mitigate hunger. Therefore, many experts recommend having a cup of water before, during, and after a meal.

By drinking a glass of water before your meal, you effectively lubricate your insides, which will ultimately help with digestion. However, you also prefill your stomach, meaning you are less likely to overindulge during the meal.

Drinking water during your meal will also help with digestion. It also provides lubrication for your throat, making it easier to swallow food.

Finally, drinking a cup of water after a meal ensures optimal digestion and helps reduce the risk of sudden hunger pangs. Therefore, drinking water in this way ensures you stick to a meal plan and avoid consuming empty calories between meals.

Midafternoon Slump

It is natural to feel a bit of a slump around 3:00 pm. While this slump often results in the afternoon consumption of coffee, it is best to stay away from caffeinated beverages. Consuming caffeine late in the afternoon can affect sleep later.

What most people do not realize is that slumps can stem from dehydration. Dehydration can also result in irritability, hostility, confusion, etc. Therefore, it is best to help your body stay steady and alert by consuming more water.

Pre-Workout, Workout, and Post-Workout

Do you workout before or after work? Regardless of when you exercise, drinking water is a crucial component of your routine.

While you will want to drink water before your routine, make sure you allow your body enough time to process the fluid. Drinking a cup of water immediately before hopping on a treadmill will likely result in bloating and discomfort. Instead, drink a cup of water 30 minutes before you begin.

You will also want to hydrate during your workout. However, do not gulp water. Take sips. Drink slowly during your routine to prevent getting sick or feeling uncomfortable.

Bedtime

You should also bring a glass of water to bed, only taking a couple of sips before lying down. Too much water before bed will lead to sleep disruptions.

8 Tips To Avoid Hidden Health Hazards While You Grill

#1 Stop Using Aluminum Foil


Research shows that when you heat aluminum (as you sometimes do on the grill), this toxic compound can leach into your food.

Aluminum has been linked to brain issues and even some forms of bone disease. Avoiding it is hard. Food is just one source — it’s also easily released into the air, which means you might be breathing aluminum into your lungs when you grill.

If you’ve grilled with aluminum recently, I suggest you do a detox.

Eat these foods for 30 days to help support the natural repair to some of the damage that aluminum has done to your body.

#2 Don’t Overcook Your Meat

Grilling meat at high temperatures produces compounds called heterocyclic amines (HCAs). HCAs have been shown to damage DNA and may act as carcinogens. When you overcook your food, it increases the amount of these compounds that are produced. Do a lighter grill, instead of burning or charring your meat.

#3 Choose The Right Marinade

HCAs are formed when meat interacts with sugar at high temperatures. Sugary marinades and BBQ sauce mixed with grilling greatly increase HCA formation.

Marinades that are made with an oil or vinegar base are much less HCA forming than sugary marinades. And marinades that contain antioxidant-rich herbs can further reduce the formation of HCAs, with some research showing up to an 88% reduction.

#4 Clean Your Grill Before and After Cooking

Another dangerous compound produced while grilling is polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are produced when the fat and juices from your meat drip onto the surface of your grill or fire and cause flames and smoke.

Be sure to clean your grill often and consider cutting off some of the excess fat on your meat to reduce the amount of smoke produced from fat drippings.

#5 Pre-Cook Your Meat

Another way to reduce PAH production is to pre-cook your meat before tossing it on the grill. This will reduce the time your meat spends on the grill, as well as the amount of drippings produced while maintaining that chargrilled finish you know and love.

#6 Choose High-Quality Meat

Always look for organic, grass-fed beef, and organic, pasture-raised chicken. These meats often contain fewer antibiotics and artificial hormones. Antibiotics & hormones in meat have been shown to harm your gut flora and contribute to weight gain .

#7 Choose Hot Dogs and Sausages with Natural Preservatives

Cured meats are often preserved using nitrates or nitrites. Nitrates (and nitrites) can form nitrosamine when cooked at high heat, which is a potentially carcinogenic compound.

Look for hot dogs that say “nitrate-free” on the package.

The next time you eat a hot dog, or anything else that may have food preservatives, drink this afterward.

It’s a blend of mushrooms, superfoods and herbs that can help discourage too many of these preservatives from getting absorbed by your body.

Taking it before or after any “questionable” meals can do a lot for your liver, kidney, and gut — stopping these chemicals from building up in your fat cells and organ tissue.

#8 Avoid Plastic Utensils and Plates and Non-Stick Cookware

Polytetrafluoroethylene (also known as Teflon or PTFE), is a manmade chemical that provides a frictionless surface that won’t interact with other chemicals. This chemical can stick around in the environment and in your body for long periods of time.

Some research shows that exposure to PTFE and similar compounds can lead to childhood obesity, and that these compounds may act as carcinogens.

Chemicals like these are hiding everywhere.

They’ve been found in over 200 personal care products like shampoo, floss, sunscreen, shaving cream, and more… 2, 3

Avoiding them entirely is hard.

Get the Right Kinds of Oils

Clearly, they needed an oil change! And so do many of YOU.

Intake of salad dressings and cooking oils has gone from around 10 pounds per person annually in the 1950s to 35 pounds today.

Highly processed oils and those invented in the 20th century are best avoided. That means corn oil, shortening made with hydrogenated palm oil, and soybean oil. Solid fats like margarine also increase inflammation.

Instead, opt for cold-pressed or expeller-pressed oils that have been extracted without use of a chemical solvent. For high-heat cooking, use polyunsaturated fats such as grapeseed or avocado oil.

For all other purposes, opt for monounsaturated oils like olive, almond, peanut, safflower, sesame, and canola oil.

Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats help lower bad LDL cholesterol and help prevent some cancers and stroke.

And omega-3, in the form of alpha-linolenic acid in canola and walnut oil, reduces plaque buildup in the arteries and keeps blood sugar levels in check.

Bonus tip: Fish oils have DHA omega-3s, which reduce brain, eye, and joint inflammation.
