Fun fact: for every inch the head moves forward in posture, its weight on your neck and upper back muscles increases by 10 pounds. So, improving your posture isn’t just about looking better - it’s about decreasing muscle soreness, increasing your energy throughout the day, and better strength and flexibility.
Lucky for you, there are some really basic exercises you can do to help improve your posture and have you feeling better in no time. Here are a few to try:
  1. Shoulder rolls. Pull your shoulders up towards your ears, roll them back and focus on trying to get your shoulder blades to touch and come back to center. Do this several times and then reverse the direction.
  2. Wall Angel. Standing against a wall as straight as you can (with knees slightly bent), bring both arms up to a 90° angle making a “W” shape. Move your arms up to form a “Y” shape. Repeat - up and down - several times. When doing this, be sure to keep your shoulders relaxed and away from your ears.
  3. Forward fold. It’s as simple as reaching to touch your toes. Don’t worry about actually reaching them - what are we made of rubber?! This simple stretch releases tension in your spine, hamstrings, and glutes. It also stretches your hips and legs.
  4. Chest opener. There are two ways to do this:
    1. interlace your fingers behind your back and stretch your arms back behind you. If your hands don’t reach, you can use a towel.
    2. Stand near a corner wall or doorway, grasp the edge and extend your right arm fully. Now twist away from your arm until you feel a deep stretch near your armpit and chest. Repeat on the other side.
A few notes on stretching. Don’t stress about the minor details… how long do I do it? I’m not very flexible, there’s no way I’m going to touch my toes! Am I doing it right? Are people staring at me? Etc etc. Trust us, you’re going to feel a stretch when you do these. Hold them for as long as it feels good. Do it as often as possible. You’ll get better with time. Who knows, someday you might just touch those toes. And if not, it’s all good.

Women at Higher Stroke Risk Than Men

Billie Jean King, Serena Williams, and Maria Sharapova all have unique strokes that propelled them to 12, 23, and 5 Grand Slam singles victories, respectively.

Unfortunately, ischemic strokes are not that unique and slam a lot more women than men. Every year in the U.S. 55,000 more women than men experience these vascular events.

Special: Scientists Unlock Bladder Secret?

That discrepancy caught the attention of researchers at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital. Their research, published in the journal Stroke, uncovered women's unique risk factors and highlighted their need to take aggressive steps to avoid a stroke.

After looking at hormone levels, hormone therapy, hormonal birth control, pregnancy, and time of menarche and menopause, they found that the following factors were all associated with an increased risk of stroke:

  • Getting your period before age 10
  • Experiencing menopause before age 45
  • Having low levels of the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS)
  • Taking oral estrogen (without aspirin), or a combined oral contraceptive (again, without aspirin)
It’s true that only a fraction of women who have one or more of those risk factors will have a stroke. But if any of them apply to you, embrace healthy behaviors that will reduce your risk of high blood pressure and stroke.

That means seven to eight hours of sleep nightly; 10,000 steps daily; seven to nine servings of fruits and veggies daily; no red or processed meat or highly processed foods; and only 100 percent whole grains.

Acid Blockers May Fuel Heart Attack Risk

Proton pump inhibitors are such effective stomach acid blockers they are now among the most-popular medications in the U.S. But a recent study says they may also increase heart attack risk.

Researchers at Houston Methodist and Stanford University analyzed data that included 1.8 million patients of Stanford Hospital and clinic to identify those who had no history of heart attack but were taking PPIs or H2 blockers for heartburn.

The researchers found the PPIs were associated with a 16% to 21% increase in the risk of heart attack. But in a separate analysis, they found no increase for H2 blockers.

Although the study did not offer proof that PPIs were to blame for the increased risk, these medications are known to decrease nitric oxide, which is essential for maintaining the structure and the elasticity of the heart’s blood vessels, researchers noted.

PPIs are the strongest acid inhibitors available, and many are available over the counter. Examples of H2 blockers include cimetidine (Tagamet) and ranitidine (Zantac).
