Hello Jimi,

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is part of a spectrum of conditions called Mast Cell Activation Disorders (MCAD). MCAS is a condition in which the body's mast cells release excessive amounts of inflammatory chemicals in response to triggers.
mail

As Dr. Theoharides (the “Mast Cell Master”) explains… Mast cells are the “universal alarm cell” that starts the inflammatory cascade. They can be triggered by infection, allergens, environmental factors like pollution, or even emotional stress. Once that happens, mast cells set into motion a series of inflammatory reactions, including the activation of immune cells and the release of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), a pro-inflammatory protein or cytokine.
mail

The release of these chemicals causes a variety of allergy-like symptoms, even though you may or may not have a testable allergy.

Mast cells have been found to participate in other immune activities, including autoimmune disease and innate and adaptive immune responses, including immune tolerance.

Mast cells are found in all the tissues of the body, but particularly:
  • on the surface of the skin
  • near blood vessels and lymphatic vessels
  • within nerves
  • throughout the respiratory system
  • in the digestive and urinary tracts
  • predominantly at the border between the individual and the external environment

Mast cells can be involved in some allergies, asthma, skin disease, depression, anxiety, brain inflammation, irritable bowel and irritable bladder, general inflammation, cardiovascular issues, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, and even certain cancers.

At Gordon Medical, we find that many people with chronic illnesses may develop mast cell activation as the immune system struggles with ongoing activation of the Cell Danger Response (CDR). With exposure to irritants such as chronic infection or toxicity, the immune system is overactivated, causing hypersensitivity, allergies, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), and/or autoimmunity.

This is why we are thrilled to share that you can learn more about Mast Cell Activation at the upcoming Many Manifestations of Mast Cell online event, August 29th - September 4th.

Potato Curry with Spinach

(full recipe in this email below)
Popeye knew what was good for him. 💪 He was sure to eat a lot of the superfood spinach.

If you want to get even more benefits from eating spinach, eat it with a food rich in vitamin C.

Such foods – citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, or tomatoes – improve absorption of the iron and calcium in the spinach.

This is an easy-to-make vegetarian curry which is filling and satisfying. The spinach and potatoes make this meal a great source of fiber and chock full of antioxidants.

Sweet chard, collard greens, or bok choy can also be used in place of the spinach.

This vegetarian curry has a creamy coconut sauce pleasantly spiced with just the right amount of heat. Plus, with a plentiful helping of spinach, it will make your body happy, too! A vegetable curry is one of the tastiest ways to get those healthy vegetables into your daily diet.

Feel free to change up the vegetables, as long as you slice them so they’re all about the same size. You could try broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, diced butternut or sweet potato, sliced zucchini, or yellow squash.
Potato Curry with Spinach
Ingredients:
  • 4 medium potatoes (about 1 lb) peeled and chopped into 1" chunks
  • 1 tbsp low-sodium vegetable broth
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tsp ginger finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 medium tomatoes chopped
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper or to taste
  • 1/2 cup thick coconut milk
  • 6 cups baby spinach
Directions:
  • Cut the peeled potatoes into 1" chunks and place in a saucepan with cold water. Bring to a boil and cook until just barely tender, about 15 to 20 minutes. Ensure that you don’t over cook the potatoes.
  • Heat the vegetable broth in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add onion, garlic, ginger and cumin. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onion is soft. Add tomatoes, curry powder; reduce the heat and cover. Cook, stirring occasionally until tomatoes have softened.
  • Add potatoes to pan, Cook, with lid on, stirring occasionally until potatoes are hot. The mixture should now have a stew consistency. If more liquid is needed add a little bit of water.
  • Stir in pepper and coconut milk.
  • Add the spinach and cover for a few minutes so the spinach can wilt. Serve.
NOTE: Instead of spinach used sweet chard, collard greens or bok choy.

What Are the Best Milk Alternatives?

By Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, MDs

In 2013, actress Anne Hathaway was in line to join the string of famous celebrities who've posed with a white moustache for the “Got Milk?” campaign when she discovered she was lactose intolerant. Of course, her appearance was canceled.

But in 1999, Whoopi Goldberg — who is also lactose intolerant — did get to do her campaign. "Lucky for us lactose-intolerant folks, there's lactose-free milk," she said.

Special: This Simple Bedtime Technique for Your Prostate

If you're lactose intolerant, you're on a dairy-free diet, or you just don't like cows' milk, chances are you're looking for the best nondairy alternatives. Researchers at McGill University have weighed the pros and cons of the four most popular varieties: soy, coconut, almond, and rice.

Soy milk came out on top because it contains more proteins and isoflavones (loaded with cancer-fighting properties).

But, say the researchers: "Women who are pregnant, are nursing, or attempting to become pregnant should use soy foods with caution and be aware that soy formula may not be the best option for their babies ... Moderation is likely key and the incorporation of real foods, as opposed to supplements or processed foods to which soy protein is added, is probably essential for maximizing health benefits."

Rice milk got the worst rating because it has little nutritional value. The researchers note that without proper care, using rice milk can result in malnutrition, especially in infants.

As for coconut milk? It offers no protein, say the researchers, and lots of saturated fats.

And almond milk? It's a pretty good choice, delivering healthy monounsaturated fats that help lower bad LDL cholesterol.

Blood Pressure Meds Don’t Eliminate Stroke

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

Most people assume that blood pressure drugs will lower their risk of stroke to normal. But a recent study has found that is not the case.

University of Alabama researchers studied 26,785 people, age 45 and up. They compared 12,327 people with successfully controlled blood pressure (less than 140 mmHG) compared with 4,090 whose blood pressure could not be controlled, even with drugs.
Special: MAGNESIUM: Are You Getting Enough?

After six years, they found that more than 820 people had suffered strokes.

People who needed one medication to control their blood pressure were at 33% higher risk of stroke compared to people who didn’t need any medication at all.

People who needed three drugs or more for control had a 248% higher stroke risk. This is similar to people with uncontrolled blood pressure, the study said.

If you have high blood pressure, medication is still the best way to control stroke risk, but this study shows it is not always the answer. The best strategy is to eliminate the need for drugs altogether with a plant-based diet, weight loss, regular exercise, and salt restriction.

And remember, weight loss of only 10 pounds usually results in the elimination of one blood pressure drug.

Dear Jimi,

Did you know that despite its massive population, India has one of the lowest incidences of Alzheimer’s on the planet?

Out of 1.4 billion people, just 4 million Indians are affected by this devastating disease.

To compare, the US reports 5.8 million people with Alzheimer’s, out of its population of just 327.2 million.

That’s a shocking difference!

Scientists have been trying to figure out exactly why this huge disparity exists and they have come up with a reason….

Indians use a LOT of two special spices in almost all their food.

You may ask, how can mere kitchen spices lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease so much?

These spices have incredible anti-inflammatory properties, and scientists have even seen them REVERSE the effects of Alzheimer’s and memory decline.

UCLA did a study that showed using one of them daily improves memory by 28% AND untangles amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer’s…

What’s even more exciting - The other is proven to be as effective as Prozac in treating depression… And as effective as the top 3 anti-inflammatory drugs on the market.
We’re exploring all these amazing discoveries and so much more in a new 10 episode docuseries called ‘Depression, Anxiety and Dementia Secrets’.
In addition, you will discover how these spices work to:
  • Decrease inflammation throughout your body
  • Combat depression, anxiety and other mood disorders
  • Improve your brain health and protect against Alzheimer’s
  • Support your heart health
  • Soothe and restore your gut lining
  • And even help fight cancer

One of the most exciting things you’ll discover at Depression, Anxiety and Dementia Secrets, is the effect of these (delicious) medicinal spices on aging brains.
To better health,

Equanimity is a state of mind that results in calmness and composure in the midst of difficult situations.

This state of mind reduces our emotional reactivity and allows us to respond to challenges in a balanced way.

To experience equanimity is to feel everything without resisting or clinging to it.

Cultivate equanimity by reflecting on your default responses to changes in your life.

When you become more aware of your reactions, you learn to bring mindfulness into your daily life and begin to ride the waves of life with openness.

You discover a great sense of peace within yourself that is not dependent on your external experience.

Based on your survey replies, one of the biggest concerns that women with breast cancer have is the fear of recurrence.

What if it comes back?

How do I know if it is coming back?

How can I be sure that I am really cancer-free?

I had those concerns as well after my first healing journey, because I did not yet understand the importance of breast cancer stem cells, circulating tumor cells (CTC) and the role inflammation played in a recurrence.

So here are a few quick tips for you to keep your mind at ease:

· Don’t guess – always test. Ask your doctor to check your inflammatory markers like HsCRP, LDH, ESR and Homocysteine. He may not understand the connection unless he is an integrative doctor.

· Make sure you keep your Vitamin D levels optimal – between 80-100 ng/ml

· Certain supplements like melatonin, blueberry extract, turmeric and broccoli sprouts can kill breast cancer stem cells.

· There are blood tests that can monitor the number of CTC’s in your blood.

I will go in depth about this topic in my new program, How to Survive and Thrive – Conquering Breast Cancer with Conventional Treatments and Natural Medicine

Here’s a great story from one of my clients, Diane from Illinois.

She started working with me almost nine years after ending conventional breast cancer treatment. She was always concerned that the cancer could come back, but never knew how to monitor that.

Here’s what she had to say:

“The experience has transformed me in ways that I would not have expected. I am stronger in body, mind and spirit because of Dr. V’s healing 7 Essentials, her kind and genuine spirit and deep understanding of what it feels like to battle and conquer cancer. Because of her, I have more confidence in and the tools to more fully live my life."

Hi Jimi,

Leading Alzheimer’s scientists discovered a 50% drop in cognitive decline from eating THIS one food...
More precisely, a research team from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has found that seniors who consume at least two standard portions of this food every week reduce their risk of developing cognitive impairment by 50%!
Good news? This easy-to-find, affordable food is in almost everyone’s fridge!
You’ll discover all about this food, and so many other amazing healing ingredients in this F-REE screening of the 10 episodes of Depression, Anxiety and Dementia Secrets.
>> Go here to get access to this amazing new docuseries

When you register to watch the series, you’re also going to discover 3 key factors that could be causing or worsening anxiety, depression, and memory problems...
You’ll also discover two powerful spices (probably already in your cupboard) that scientists believe are why India has one of the lowest incidences of Alzheimer’s on the planet.

You may ask, how can mere kitchen spices lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease so much?
Well for one, they stop the formation of certain toxins that are created when you grill or fry meat… Toxins that the National Cancer Institute lists as causing DNA damage that increases inflammation (and the risk for cancer).
Just marinating or including these spices in your cooking stops these toxins from forming.
Secondly, these spices have incredible anti-inflammatory properties, and scientists have even seen them REVERSE the effects of Alzheimer’s and memory decline.
UCLA did a study that showed using one of them daily improves memory by 28% AND untangles amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer’s…
Another study that found this same spice can increase weight loss by up to 5%... just by adding it to your day.
These spices are even effective against depression and anxiety…
As powerful as Prozac!
A 2013 study published in the peer-reviewed journal, Phytotherapy Research examined the effects of just one of these spices on depression over Prozac, specifically. Daily doses of the spice 1000mg, and 20g of Prozac’s chemical, fluoxetine, were administered to participants for six weeks.
This study found that not only is this spice effective in treating depression... but that it is far safer. And countless studies have proved that the two spices combined are even more potent!
>> Learn all about these powerful, medicinal spices and more here in this FR-EE 10 episode docuseries

This is sooo true

ALLOW, RELEASE, LET GO

This week was one big bag of mixed emotions. It was my 5-year cancerversary, as you will see in the blog below, which always brings up a whole mess of different things. Excitement that I finally made it to this milestone, sadness that it’s a milestone that is a part of my life at all, pride at all I’ve done to get here, astonishment at the journey I’ve had so far, and of course that ever-present apprehension and fear, because cancer is one unpredictable biatch.

But what added to this mix was that I got some news that was pretty disruptive to me and what has been my routine way for the past 5 years of monitoring for any sign of cancer trying make a comeback. The same testing I have relied on looks like it won’t be as readily available anymore, and it sent me reeling into feelings of stress, anxiety, and fear that threatened to ruin the celebratory mood that had been building all week in anticipation of my cancerversary extravaganza weekend that I have planned.

Some very helpful conversations later with some of the most wonderful people in my life and on my healthcare team, and I’m feeling much better. But what also helped was taking an hour on Friday morning for some yoga and meditation, two things that I have unfortunately been putting on the back burner for the last 6 weeks while we’ve been moving, the school year was ending, and I’ve been in a generally transitional period. The yoga video I was following was “Yoga for When You’re in a Bad Mood” on the Yoga With Adriene YouTube channel (my absolute fav and one to check out if you haven’t already!). At the end of video, she said four little words that I’ve been reflecting on since: allow, release, let go. They felt applicable to me in that moment and to my experience with cancer in general.

One of the most beneficial things I have learned to do from my cancer journey is to allow the belief that things are working out as they are meant to and for some good. It definitely doesn’t always feel that way, but if I look back on the last five years, I know that although there have been a lot of things I wish I never had to go through, I have also benefitted in a lot of ways from my experience with cancer. On the days when I’m spiralling, like for those 24 hours this week, reminding myself of this and allowing that belief to flood me once again can be so, so helpful for halting that spiral in its tracks.

Another, much harder, lesson I’ve learned is to release my attempts to control things that I can’t. Like the disruptive news I got this week, there are many things in this life that are simply outside of our control, and when we encounter them, the best thing to do is to pivot towards the things that we can control. What I can control is the action I can take in response to the news, the solutions I can find to the problems the event has produced, and the shifts I can make in how I feel and think about the situation. That has definitely helped me feel less frustration and helplessness and a lot more centred, which is an infinitely more productive place to take action from.

And perhaps the most difficult of them all is to let go of those things that aren’t serving me. This could be people, emotions, past events, unhelpful cycles of thoughts, even a job or other commitment, but in this case, it was definitely emotions. Stress, anxiety, and fear are very difficult places to be and they are also very difficult places to try and think clearly or act logically from. To let them go and settle into as much calm and positivity as possible is going to serve you better every single time. Some days, letting these things go will feel impossible, and that’s okay. Give it some time, some space, and maybe some activities you find grounding like yoga and meditation do for me, and you will reach that point of letting go in your own time.

Allow, release, let go. Simple words, perhaps not so simple actions always; but just reminding myself of these three things has helped me a lot over the last few days. If it was a reminder you needed too, stop right now, take a deep breath in and a deep breath out, and repeat those four little words to yourself.

Happy Healing ❤️

Resources: Interviews

If you’re new to Solis, you may not know that we have a YouTube channel! There are lots of great resources there, including Mental Health Monday vlogs, guided meditations, and EFT tapping exercises. One of my favourite things on the channel though is the imPOWERED interview series. In the summer of 2020, when we couldn’t do much else, I teamed up with Cancer Warrior Canada to host an online interview series with experts from a variety of fields on topics about and related to cancer, healing, prevention, and support (note: there were episodes with another host that were not related to cancer, so only the ones having to do with cancer and healing are on the Solis channel). One of the amazing experts I interviewed was naturopathic doctor Dr. Lori Bouchard of Inside Health Clinic, who is an incredible fountain of knowledge on integrative cancer care and prevention and who also happens to be my naturopath!

The quote above is just one of the many pieces of advice and knowledge that Dr. Lori imparted during our interview. We focused on diet, hormones, stress, and how all of these (depending on our choices) can influence either the growth or the prevention of cancer. To watch our full interview, check out the link below. And why not look through the other areas of the Solis channel while you’re there? It’s all 100% free and available to you 24/7!

Quick Tips! Detoxing

As you know, I’m celebrating my 5-year cancerversary this week! While the day itself was Wednesday, we’re doing most of the celebrating this weekend, which includes some meals out where I, for once, won’t worry AT ALL about what I eat or drink! Hooray! To prepare my body for an out-of-its-usual-routine weekend, I have been drinking what I call green lemonade. It’s super easy to make, really tasty, and contains some great things to help you support your body, especially your detoxing pathways (which I have a feeling I will need after this weekend

).

It contains just 4 ingredients and an optional 5th: filtered water, a wedge of lemon, a few slices of fresh ginger, a tablespoon of chlorophyll, and stevia to taste (if you want to sweeten it up a bit). Toss them all into a glass or bottle of water and you're good to go! There are a ton of effects that all five of these ingredients have that are beneficial not just for detoxing but for healing and preventing cancer too, so why not make one of your glasses or bottles of water every day into a green lemonade?

Click here to read my full post in the FB group about their benefits and to get links to some references if you want to learn more about them and the research.

Lessons Cancer Taught Me: Year 4

In my first year after diagnosis, I started to have realizations about different things I was learning from cancer: ways I was changing, positive growth I was experiencing, and how my perspective on life was shifting. I started writing them down, and it is something that I continue today. I am currently sharing my lessons from year four in the Facebook group, so if you have missed any of them, visit the link below to see the most recent one, and then meander through the posts on the group wall or search "lessons" in the group's search bar to see the others. As it was my cancerversary this week and the start of a new year post-cancer, this is the last lesson of year 4! I hope it speaks to you and helps you find some pockets of light in your own darkness.

All of us have implicit biases that cause us to make inaccurate judgments about other people.

These are often subtle, and many times we may not even realize that they are at play.

Practice improving your awareness of your thoughts so you can uncover your biases.

When you find yourself being judgmental, pause and challenge that thought. Work towards expanding your perspective.

Embrace curiosity to tackle reflexive judgments, which are often inaccurate. Try to see the world from other people's points of view.

It's also important to manage stress and embrace self-care, since mental fatigue can cause our brains to rely on cognitive shortcuts when making decisions.

Health thought of the day:

Reduce EMF exposure. EMFs from WIFI, cell phones, and computers have all been linked to an inflammatory response in the body, ultimately contributing to cancer cell growth.

While you might not be willing to be away with these completely, you can do a number of things that I do that will reduce your exposure exponentially. Remember, everything counts, especially when you stack one thing on top of another.

Non-Toxic PEMF Therapy Showing Promising Results for Cancer

Are you aware that PEMF therapy for cancer has been documented in humans showing promising potential?

While I'm not saying PEMF Therapy is a cure or treatment for cancer, the science is really exciting behind why and how it's working.

Studies have shown antineoplastic and antiangiogenic effects of PEMF therapy: PEMFs inhibit cancer growth by disrupting the mitotic spindle and modulate gene expression with specific DNA sequences.

In addition, PEMFs inhibit angiogenesis in tumor tissues, suppressing tumor vascularization and reducing tumor growth, which is essential for fighting cancer cell proliferation.

Tips for Better Flu Survival
By Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, MDs

Around 1919, the phrase "the old one-two" first appeared when sportswriters described a left-right combination that landed a boxer flat on his back. It's just as appropriate today when using the phrase to describe what can happen if you come down with the flu.
And according to researchers, if you're sick enough with the flu to see a doctor, you're also at increased risk for a heart attack. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that during the first seven days of diagnosis with laboratory-confirmed influenza, the risk of heart attack skyrockets six times for people 35 and older.
Special: Sleep Like This to Help Fix Nerve Pain
The good news? After eight days, the increased risk disappears completely.
Here are a couple of tips for better flu survival:
• If you are hit with the flu, see if there's a doctor using telemedicine in your area; you don't have to go to an office, exposing others and wearing yourself out.
• If you have the flu and experience shortness of breath, chest, neck, jaw or arm pain, nausea, and/or severe abdominal pressure, don't ignore the symptoms or assume they're from the flu. Call 911 to protect yourself from the one-two punch of flu and heart attack.

Hello Jimi,
Of all the health challenges people face one of the toughest is chronic pain.
It is a fact that if you have chronic pain, only another person with chronic pain can truly understand how it feels. For many of you, it is frustrating to know you have pain but have little hope of a diagnosis, let alone relief. Many chronic conditions such as tension headaches, fibromyalgia, IBS, migraines, and myofascial pain may be a result of CSS (Central sensitivity syndrome).
image
It can also cause widespread and persistent pain and pain from touching (allodynia). This is one of many causes of pain. But there are numerous other causes that are often missed or mistreated. In an individual without chronic pain, receptors in our ligaments, muscles, skin, and joints detect tissue damage. This damage can be from inflammation, injury, or disease. Numerous neurotransmitters that exist in each cell send electrical impulses from the pain receptor, through the peripheral nerve, up the spinal cord, finally ending at your brain.
image
When you suffer an injury, you may develop acute or “short-term” pain from inflammation or damage. Eventually, the acute pain subsides though the length of time it takes to heal varies based on your injury. The cause of acute pain is known and, therefore, the course it will take is usually predictable. If you think about a needle pricking your finger, you can see that the sensation is always the same. The pain goes from your finger, up your arm, and to your brain in relatively the same way. This is not the case with chronic pain.

However, for many, the source of and answer too their chronic pain isn’t known.

There are numerous causes of chronic pain. Many go unchecked and untreated.

If you have issues with chronic or acute pain please take time to watch my interview with pain specialist Leslie Parran. Leslie has an incredible medical background, one that allows her help those with chronic pain and inflammation find the source and appropriate treatment for their chronic pain.

Three main reasons are contributing to our nutritional depletion:

  1. Depleted soil due to poor agricultural practices; over usage, no re-mineralization (such as crop rotation and land rest), plowing (yes, it dries the soil).
  2. Use of an oversimplified fertilizer (NPK) only - even in organic farming; that ignores all other micronutrients and trace minerals.
  3. Our digestion isn’t stellar to absorb nutrients.
