Q & A: Do Men Need a PSA Test?
Question:

My father died of prostate cancer, so I am particularly careful about getting a PSA test every year. But a friend recently told me that PSA tests have some drawbacks. Is this true? And if so, what else can I do to protect my prostate?
Answer:
Your friend is right — a PSA (prostate specific antigen) test is not failsafe. There are some important caveats to consider when dealing with PSA tests and prostate health.
PSA tests were once considered a lifesaver because they helped detect prostate cancer before other tests. When a man’s PSA rises above the normal range, it can indicate a potential problem in the prostate, such as the development of cancer. However, PSA levels can also increase due to chronic inflammation, infection, and several other factors (see below).
Newer research suggests that widespread PSA testing as a screening measure does not necessarily improve prostate cancer outcomes. One of the reasons is that a PSA test alone does not measure prostate cancer aggressiveness. Many prostate cancers grow slowly and may never pose a threat to life or health. Conversely, a PSA test can also miss aggressive cancers if performed too early.
It is important to know that PSA results are affected by certain factors, including the following:
  • Medications
  • Seasonal variations
  • Time of the day
  • Sexual activity
  • Intense exercise like bicycle riding
  • The actual size of the prostate (an enlarged prostate can lead to a higher reading)

*-- You Should Still be Wearing SPF --*​

If you're stuck at home all day and working by a sunny window, it is good for your mental health, but it isn't doing your skin any favors. Though most windows probably block UVB rays (which cause sunburns), UVA rays do penetrate through glass. These guys are the ones linked to deep wrinkles, sunspots and cancer.

So what does this mean then? You probably aren't going to burn sitting by your window. But you will be doing long-term damage to your skin. So wear an SPF of 30 or higher on any part of your skin that's exposed while sitting near any sunlit window.

It also wouldn't hurt to look into investing in a sunscreen that additionally protects against blue light, which is given off by tech like your laptop, phone and TV. There isn't much research as to how much blue light exposure damages your skin, but, just like UVA rays, we do know that blue light breaks down collagen and ages your skin.

As always, broad-spectrum protection is best, as is anything at or over SPF 30. We should also be sure to check the label to see how often to reapply (which will also depend on how much time you're spending sitting at that window and whether or not you're directly hit by the sun.

Your BEST defense for cold and flu season

When it comes to fighting all of the typical viruses that hit hard in the fall in winter, the best offense is a good defense.



In the conventional medicine world, doctors will promote getting the flu shot as your best protection against the flu.



As functional medicine doctors, we support this strategy. But we also don’t think it ends there.



You also need to be properly supporting your body, too. Here are our best immunity tips to get your body fueled properly to fight any sickness that heads your way.



✔️Eat your greens.



Nutrition is so important.



Especially in peak sickness season (around the holidays), you’re often eating more candies, cookies, and sweet treats. The problem is that your body has to work really hard to filter out all that excess sugar. This can weaken your immune system.

General Mills claims that BHT is “a safe way” to help cereals stay fresh. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Multiple studies have linked BHT to tumor growth, hormone disruption and reproductive harm. BHA, a preservative that’s chemically similar, is a known carcinogen, according to California state scientists. Both of these chemicals have been subject to severe restrictions in the EU, Canada and Japan.
Even so, many popular foods in the U.S. contain either BHT or BHA. According to EWG’s Food Scores database, 2,830 products contain BHT, including popular cereals like Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Froot Loops. Outrageous!

Recently I emailed you about a toxic weed killer that nearly everyone has in their body…

But I made a mistake.

In my email I said that tests show that 80% of adults and children have glyphosate in their urine.

But it turns out that for children, the numbers are even worse.

An even more recent study by the CDC shows that 87% of children test positive for glyphosate.

Some say "adrenal fatigue" has been debunked ... REALLY?​

There is a smart, science-oriented health influencer / educator that has made his name in part by supposedly "debunking" the existence of "adrenal fatigue".

But has he actually debunked it? The answer to this question is NOT trivial. It matters a great deal.

In his argument, this influencer / educator seems to set up a bit of a "straw man" to then knock down by saying that the majority functional health practitioners for many years diagnosed all fatigue as "adrenal fatigue".

First, I doubt that this was ever the case, but if it was, then score one point for this educator for disabusing the functional medicine community of equating all fatigue with "adrenal fatigue".

After all, there are many dozens of causes of fatigue that have little or nothing to do with the adrenal glands. I have identified over 100 causes of fatigue.

Next, this educator describes how he spent 6 months combing the literature, searching for articles about "adrenal fatigue", or similar topics, and found very few.

Of the articles that he reviewed, there were very inconsistent relationships between fatigue and levels of cortisol, an important adrenal hormone.

In these studies, some people with fatigue had high cortisol, some had low cortisol, and some had normal cortisol.

Wait. Hold up.

Since when does adrenal function come down to merely ... cortisol?

That's the first HUGE FLAW in this educator's research and reasoning.

And to the extent that researchers studying adrenal function have only looked at cortisol, that was a huge error in their thinking and research.

The adrenal glands produce DOZENS of substances. And one substance that most clinicians know about that is more important than cortisol in diagnosing adrenal function and "adrenal fatigue" is DHEA.

Furthermore, the adrenal glands prioritize cortisol production above all else because you will die very quickly without enough cortisol.

That's not true of any other substance produced by the adrenal glands.

So you can't assess adrenal function merely by evaluating whether cortisol level are abnormal because the adrenal glands will fight to the death, literally, to produce cortisol.

But if cortisol levels are abnormal, then you have definitely found evidence of problems with adrenal function.

Another fact about cortisol production by the adrenal glands is that as the body responds to stress, cortisol production often first increases above normal, and then later it may decrease below normal.

And on the way between abnormally high cortisol production and abnormally low cortisol production, adrenal glands might pass through a stage of producing normal cortisol levels.

This was shown exhaustively (pun not intended) by Hans Selye, one of the most famous and prolific scientific researchers of all time, who incidentally was nominated for a Nobel Prize for his work.

Another one of the things that Selye showed was that rodents stressed for long enough died with shrunken adrenal glands.

Research by other scientists has shown that every person that dies of a chronic disease dies with shrunken adrenal glands.

So something is happening to the adrenal glands during stress, or at least long-term stress.

So is adrenal stress a cause of fatigue, and is there any scientific merit in a term like "adrenal fatigue"?

Given that adrenal hormones are very much involved with energy production and feelings of wellbeing, I'd say that changes in adrenal gland function would have to be one of the causes of fatigue.

But we can't always look only to cortisol to measure the state of adrenal function as a potential cause of fatigue.

Next, given the fact that simply administering adrenal hormones like DHEA and cortisol can sometimes almost instantly reduce fatigue and improve energy, I'd say that in these cases a term like "adrenal fatigue" as a diagnosis absolutely make sense.

So adrenal fatigue does exist, but it is certainly not the only explanation for all fatigue.

And there are certainly many cases in which simply administering DHEA and/or cortisol did not improve symptoms.

I think that the educator I have been talking about did a great job of calling attention to the fact that not all fatigue is "adrenal fatigue", but I think he made a huge mistake by not realizing the cortisol is not sole measure of adrenal function and by concluding that there is no such thing as "adrenal fatigue".

He did many people a disservice by convincing them that there is no such thing as "adrenal fatigue", especially given the fact that his argument was based entirely on equating adrenal function and "adrenal fatigue" with cortisol levels.

It's just plain bad science and bad logic.

Nobody has "debunked" or invalidated Hans Selye's breakthrough discoveries about the stress response, least of all somebody that has not yet completed a science degree (though he is working on one).

I have lots of respect for most other things that this educator brings to the surface in his quest to solve fatigue for people, and in fact I first learned about the Cell Danger Response from him.

But the "I have debunked adrenal fatigue" story that he leads with is almost completely without merit and does him as much of a disservice as it does for others.

And the fact that so many practitioners in the functional medicine space have fallen this "adrenal fatigue doesn't exist" idea speaks to a weakness in their foundational scientific education, their common sense, and their logic.

That said, there are so many brilliant practitioners with fantastic professional chops. I don't pretend to be above any of them. I learn from all of them daily.

But it seems like every last one of them has blind spots and weaknesses. So that must apply to me as well.

We all need to keep improving, and I believe that the place to start is with fundamental physiology and a better understanding of the scientific method and scientific reasoning because this is where I see most people falling down in their functional medicine game.

OK, end of rant.

I hope that wasn't too harsh. But with people's health on the line, many educators and practitioners need to sharpen up.

I'm familiar with the current controversy over cooking with seed oils. I see food and health writers condemning sunflower and peanut oils in that category, and I disagree. I believe that if you would eat the food, then the oil is edible for you, and I love sunflower seeds and peanuts. To my thinking, the seed oils to avoid are the canola, safflower and cottonseed oils, those cheap oils coming from seeds you would never eat. In fact cottonseed oil is a waste product of the cotton crop. It shouldn't be wasted, but should perhaps be used as a biofuel. There is apparently avocado seed oil, which I've never seen in any of the stores, but if the label says "avocado oil" it comes from the fruit, not the seed.

So I'm interested in Jimi's take on that, and if it's already posted here maybe he can just direct me to that post.

I have posted a lot on cooking oils but all I can tell you is they are somewhere in here, wish I could help but maybe I can shed some light on this subject for you.
Here's my take
The problem with many oils is the processing chemicals used more than the seed (sunflower and peanut oils). Also the temperature they are processed at make some oils more volatile to the human system. (They cause inflammation through out the body)
They say One French fry fried in bad oils is as bad as smoking one cigarette, how many French Fries do you eat in a meal.
Honestly all Fried foods eat away at your health, even frying a hamburger.
I hope this helps you, they explain it so much better than I can on the cancer summits which I have been posting live links for. (Links are only live for 24 hours)
They were talking about oils on the Stop Cancer Summit, you, and everyone here should watch it, so much info.
Oh and I have been posting live links to it so members here don't have to register. Gonna do that for the breathwork summit too, every vaper should watch it and on my links they won't haveta register.
