VITALISING​

You may have heard the story before, but in case you’re new here, the first time I smiled with any genuineness post-diagnosis was while I was journaling one day. I realised that I might be able to help people through my experience, once I got through the worst of it myself. That thought brought me the first glimmer of hope, of positivity, of belief that maybe, just maybe, something good might come from all of this and it might turn out okay.
What that led to was more personal growth and more silver linings than I could have ever thought possible, could have ever known to wish or hope for, and what those gave me was a way out of the darkness of cancer. They’re the unexpected gifts, the lessons that I share here often. They’re the reason that part of me can look back on my journey with cancer and feel a kind of gratitude for the experience. Solis and getting to share everything about my healing to support those currently in the trenches is a source of great fulfilment for me and one of the purposes of my life.
I say “one” because I’m lucky enough to feel that I have multiple purposes. But, when I look at them together, they all have to do with sharing, sharing my gifts with others. Whether it’s sharing my artistic talents through acting, my knowledge of writing and language through teaching, or sharing my soul with the Solis community, all it’s been through, and the knowledge I’ve gained as a result of cancer, it all comes back to that one thing.
When we share with others, it not only helps them but it also helps us. It gives our lives and our experiences meaning, even the difficult ones, and that is one of the most important things cancer taught me. It makes it possible to loosen the grip that resentment, bitterness, and anger have on us. It helps us release the resistance and free ourselves to move forward in our lives. It helps us fear the next obstacle less and tackle it with more strength. It helps us grow.
As the years between my diagnosis and my present add up and I share more of my healing experience with the world, the more I believe that sharing is really what we’re here to do. We’re here to experience the things sent our way, learn and grown from them, and then share that learning with others so they may conquer their challenges, grow too, and pass it on. On and on down the line it goes.
This may feel impossible to you right now, impossible to envision a future where you pluck out, focus on, and share the positives that have happened to you and how you got through the negatives. I absolutely felt that way at first, on that day when I first smiled. I had no idea if or how I would reach that point, but I hoped fiercely that I would. And I did, so hope fiercely.
In no way do you need to share as publicly as I do, but I think it’s likely that one day, someone will come along across your path with whom you share a tip, a story from your journey, or even just a supportive, empathetic smile. Even just one person. And that opportunity is most definitely something worth looking out for, because giving our lives purpose gives us more things to live for, and we all know how vital and vitalising that is.

"Dairy: the Good, the Bad, and the Substitutes"​

One of the most lauded anti-cancer diets is vegan, and it works really well for some folks. When I was first diagnosed, this was one of the diets I tried, but it quickly became apparent that it was not for me. I lost waaaay too much weight, was tired all the time, and was unhappy. So, my naturopath and I adjusted things. I added some healthy carbs back in as well as organic, free-range or wild animal products (chicken, turkey, and pacific salmon) and certain dairy products in limited amounts. This worked SO MUCH better for me, and it was perfect evidence for there not being just one anti-cancer diet. It highlighted the importance of listening to your body and learning what it needs, and more importantly, what it doesn’t.

Including certain things in your diet that others don’t may be EXACTLY what your body needs, and that’s okay! But there are some things to keep in mind when you choose to include these things in your diet that will help you make the healthiest choices possible to support your body, including listening to what your body tells you after eating them. In today’s throwback blog post, I’m sharing info about and tips for keeping some dairy in your diet as well as my favourite alternatives if you decide not to.

Inspiration​

In the thick of crisis, often all we can think about is where else we wish we were. Right after I was diagnosed, I was so focused on what I perceived to be the end point of my healing and wishing with all my heart that I was already there. It took me a really long time to be able to break my desperate gaze away from that future and take a look at what I had right there, right then.

It’s entirely natural to wish that you have already achieved the healing that you are working for, but what I discovered is that there was so much more to happen that I didn't even know to wish for. There was tons of healing, yes, but it didn’t end where I thought it would. I have learned that healing and the subsequent growth and development that greets us on that path do not terminate when the doctor says we’re in remission or we get a good scan or we remain stable. It’s a lifelong journey, if you choose to keep going along that route, and if you are forever fixed on where you think the road is going, you’re going to miss all that you are passing along the way (not to mention everything that waits beyond where you think the end is).

And it’s those moments that are the real juicy ones, the perspective shifting, self-love activating, life-changing moments. So, on this (Canadian) Thanksgiving weekend, take a moment to stop and look around at the here and now, at what you can learn from this moment even if it’s a difficult one, at what you can take with you as you continue on. Answer the question for yourself, what am I thankful for, right this second?

My latest podcast interview aired last week on the podcast "Mindfully Integrative" with Dr. Damaris G, an Integrative Doctor of Nurse Practice and a Family Nurse Practitioner who focuses on holistic integrative health and functional medicine. We talked about a lot! I really love Dr. Damaris’s direct and honest approach to discussing health and the benefits of integrative medicine. We agreed on a lot when it comes to integrative cancer care and how to undertake healing, and we discussed not only physical healing but also the importance of mental and emotional healing as well when it comes to the root causes of disease.

Resources: Diet and Nutrition​

One of the hardest things to do post-cancer (besides dealing with having cancer) was the diet change. I LOVED a lot of things that, unfortunately, cancer also loves, and so they had to go. It was made even more difficult by the fact that I was only 28 and most people my age were busy eating and drinking whatever they wanted without much thought. It was really tough, and at first I kept telling myself it was just for now, but what I eventually realised was that it wasn’t; this, or some degree of it, was going to have to be a lifelong change. And man, is that difficult! The key though is finding a diet that fits into your life and to treat it as a lifestyle change. If it isn’t doable for you, you will stick to it for a while, but as life starts to pick up again after treatment, it will become all too easy to slide back into your old eating habits. It has to become your new normal, and it has to be something capable of becoming that.

Naturopath and integrative cancer care expert Dr. Lori Bouchard is building an awesome YouTube channel! I’ve shared one or two of her previous videos, and this week, I shared one on how to make adopting an anti-cancer diet more doable. She recognises how overwhelming and frustrating it can be, and so in this video she discusses her top ways to integrate healthy eating into your lifestyle and make it as easy as possible. She touches on diet as a lifestyle change, foods that energize to eliminate cravings, fasting & feasting, and more!

Lessons Cancer Taught Me: Year 5​

In my first year after diagnosis, I started to have realizations about different things I was learning from cancer: ways I was changing, positive growth I was experiencing, and how my perspective on life was shifting. I started writing them down, and it is something that I continue today. I had my 5-year cancerversary in July, and this means a new year of lessons! Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., writes:

A British Medical Journal (BMJ) review of studies including more than 100,000 patients showed that arthritis medications called NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) dramatically increased heart attack death risk. Now another study, called the INVEST study, with over 22,000 patients has confirmed this problem.

The good news? Natural herbal remedies can be far more effective than the medications — without the safety risks and at lower cost.

Many adults suffer from arthritis and other aches and pains. Arthritis NSAID medications such as ibuprofen are in very common use. The use of these arthritis medications increased after research showed that Vioxx increased heart attack risk (it was pulled from the market because of this). Unfortunately, this was like "jumping from the frying pan into the fire."

Research has also shown that arthritis NSAID medications cause over 16,500 U.S. deaths a year from bleeding ulcers, added to a doubling of heart attacks/vascular disease (the number one killer in the United States).

Now the INVEST study has shown that in adults who already have high blood pressure and heart disease, being on arthritis NSAID medications more than doubled their risk of heart attack.

Here are some common medication questions:

Should I stop the aspirin I'm taking for heart disease?

Absolutely not. For those with known heart disease, taking one aspirin a day is a very good idea and does not carry the same risks.

I've been on arthritis medicine for decades. Is the risk reversible?

Fortunately, although this needs to be studied further, the research we have suggests that the answer is yes; the risk can be reversed as the person comes off the medications. I say this because this same risk can occur with very short-term use of ibuprofen immediately after a heart attack (within 37 days). This suggests that the heart attack risk is not increased by causing increased blockages in the arteries, but rather by changes in blood clotting and perhaps blood vessel spasm. These types of changes go away soon after the medication is stopped. So that is encouraging.

Should I stop the arthritis medication and just be in pain?

No, it is not healthy to be in pain.

Do not change any medications without your physician's approval. What you can do in the interim is take simple measures to decrease your arthritis pain. That way, during your next visit, you can let your doctor know that the arthritis pain is much less and ask if you can stop the medications, using them only if needed. Your doctor will very likely say, “Of course.” If not, let them know your concern based on the studies we noted above, so they can explain to you why you still need the medication.
