"Pausing" is an incredibly powerful tool.

Let your mind settle before making a decision. Your first reaction might not always be the best reaction.

You need to practice giving yourself enough time to come up with a solution that can help you make things better, not worse.

Pausing will help you to resist the urge to make rash decisions. A few seconds of anger can lead to lasting repercussions.

Simply stepping back and pausing for a moment can make all the difference. Don't react too quickly. Stay calm. This moment will pass.

Research: Paleo Diet Has Its Own Merits

The so-called "paleo" diet, which cuts out a number of food groups to bring about weight loss, has been around for several years now. Some people may have thought it was just another fad. But recent scientific studies have found the regimen that makes up the diet's requirements has merit.

A paleo diet requires people to eat foods similar to those available to humans during the Paleolithic period, which dates from 10,000 B.C. to 2.5 million years ago, according to the Mayo Clinic. The diet typically includes foods that could be obtained by hunting and gathering, such as fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, and limits foods that became common with the advent of farming, including dairy products, legumes, and grains.

Special: Save Your 'Beat Up' Liver Before It's Too Late

One research review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found the paleo diet did a better job of reducing waist circumference, blood pressure, cholesterol, and fasting blood sugar than diets based on general health guidelines.

Another study published in the journal Lipids in Health and Disease involved people who already had metabolic syndrome, a constellation of conditions associated with diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses. After just two weeks, paleo dieters saw a greater improvement in heart disease risk factors than those who followed a mainstream health-oriented diet.

According to participants in yet another study, the paleo diet can also be more satisfying than a very healthy Mediterranean-style diet.

It's important to point out that, along with unhealthy salt, sugar, and processed foods, the paleo diet cuts out entire food groups, even good-for-you whole grains, as well as legumes and dairy. That could mean a nutrient shortfall.

Talk to your primary care provider if this is a diet you'd like to try. You might also need to work with a nutritionist to make sure you're getting key vitamins and minerals.

Most of the time, we don't even know what's happening or why it's happening.

We spend weeks, months, and sometimes years feeling confused. It's unsettling.

But the fact remains that life keeps moving regardless of whether we have the answers or not.

There are always more questions than answers. We have to learn to be at ease with uncertainty.

We have to learn to live with the questions. You can never really know exactly where you're going to end up.

But that doesn't have to stop you from living your life fully. Focus on what feels right to you now.

Avoid rushing to judgment or obsessing over "shoulds". Sometimes it's better to embrace “I don’t know”.

Don't limit yourself by chasing false certainty. Open yourself up to new possibilities.

I'd like to start today’s brunch by saying the “C” word… cancer.

It’s a word that carries so much fear that, in some circles, people try to even avoid saying it. I get that. But I also don’t want to underserve you by avoiding a topic that millions of people desperately want to hear about.

In fact, I’d be willing to bet that your life has been affected by cancer in some way—whether you’ve faced a diagnosis yourself, have a family history that’s always concerned you, or you have a friend or loved one who’s dealt with this disease.

SO WHAT CAUSES BREAST CANCER? ⠀
From my clinical experience, it's rarely just one cause. From one cancer cell to a tumor takes about ten years. Imagine a young woman named Sarah. Sarah had scoliosis when she was a young girl, so she received more x-rays than usual. She also grew up eating ultra-processed foods. Then one day, while walking to her car, she fell and landed on her breast. Several years later, during perimenopause, her doctor gave her synthetic hormone therapy. During all that time, she was also working a very stressful job. I often hear some form of this story with new breast cancer patients.

ESTROGEN DOMINANCE ⠀
Estrogen dominance is likely the most important factor when it comes to breast cancer. This is because estrogen can feed many types of cancers and cause them to grow. Is estrogen a "bad" hormone? No, but it can quickly accumulate when the body isn't functioning correctly, and that's when the problems begin. ⠀

MEDICATIONS ⠀
Medications like synthetic hormone replacement therapy (HRT) are linked to breast cancer. ⠀

INSUFFICIENT IODINE ⠀
Insufficient iodine can be an issue because iodine is required in breasts, ovaries, and the prostate. Iodine balances estrogen and has a strong anti-breast cancer effect. ⠀

EXCESS IRON ⠀
Excess iron in the body works as a powerful oxidant, increasing free radicals, thereby raising a woman's risk. Most people are getting the wrong types of iron from fortified foods like bread and pasta. ⠀

LOW VITAMIN D ⠀
Low vitamin D is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in breast cancer patients.

When bad things happen in our lives, maintaining hope seems like an exercise in futility.

It feels as though you're only lying to yourself or being delusional. However, being objective doesn't mean you have to lose hope.

Giving up hope will only invite more despair into your life. Allow yourself to be comforted by a sense of optimism.

Sometimes hope is more about the present than the future. Hope makes your present more manageable.

It helps you to remain calm, do your best today, and trust that everything will be fine.

You do have the strength to hope. It's not all over yet. You don't have to feel down forever.
