Is Veggie Pizza Crust Healthy?

The latest stats on Americans' pizza passions make it clear: We love this (usually) white-flour, high-fat, processed-meat-laden food. There are approximately 61,269 pizzerias in the U.S., dishing up about 100 acres worth of pies each day. That's enough to provide everyone with 46 slices annually.

Fortunately, people are starting to realize that a refined-flour crust and the high-fat cheeses and meats that top it are not healthy choices.

Special: World's Most Anti-Inflammatory Food?

That trend has led purveyors of pies to cook up some supposedly healthier alternatives. One favorite faux-pizza crust is made with cauliflower. Yet while this heat-at-home pie version is billed as low-carb and nutritious, that’s not always the case.

Some cauliflower pizza crusts contain as much as 26 grams of net carbs per slice — about the same as a regular frozen pizza slice.

And sometimes the calorie content comes close to regular pizza — up to 170 per slice.

Clearly, you have to check the ingredients/nutrition labels carefully. Cauliflower should be first on the crust's ingredient list, indicating it's the main component. But often the top spot is held by a calorie- and carb-dense flour such as tapioca or cassava.

And beware of added sugar.

Remember, you can't fool Mother Nature. If you want a healthy pizza, go for a 100 percent veggie/whole-grain crust topped with olive oil, tomato sauce, and roasted veggies. Add broiled salmon or chicken breast for healthy protein.

*-- Tips for Caring for Your Feet --*​

At an absolute, bare minimum, feet should be clean. I mean, you walk on them, don't you? What if you were stuffed into a leather shoe all day, strolling through parking lots, jogging in parks, shopping, doing laundry, tapping impatiently in line at the bank. Feet suffer from lack of air, from shoes that don't breathe, from sweaty conditions on hot summer asphalt. Daily scrubbing with soap and a nail brush is a good start, but it's only a start.

When it comes to toenails, there is no in-between. Clean, healthy, well-groomed toenails are just simply more appealing. Grubby, long, unhealthy toenails are nasty. Toenails should be well-brushed with soapy water, clipped short and neat with clippers, and treated with anti-fungal medicine if nails are discolored, thick or peeling.

Even girls can get athlete's foot (always wear flip-flops at the gym, at the pool, at the park, in any shower that is not your very own), and there topical medicines that can cure it. (If you don't know what athlete's foot is, it's a fungus that causes feet to burn, itch and peel).

Assuming your feet are clean and healthy, the step to beauty is a short one. Keep your feet smooth by using a pumice stone a couple of times a week, rub them with lotion like Upper Canada Peppermint Foot Cream to keep them soft, and use a clear polish if you don't like brightly colored toes.

No one talks about it (except in women's studies class), but women grow hair on their toes. If your toes are fuzzy, you can wax them to add to overall foot smoothness. Get a pedicure for that professional polish, but don't let them cut your cuticles, whose sole purpose in life is to keep your feet safe from infections.

Food is our first line of defense, Jimi.

Healthy, nutrient-rich foods are the body’s number one resource for keeping us balanced. Besides that, the most natural medicine for our body comes from what we consume each day.

Organic foods have to fight for their right to grow, so they have higher levels of nutrients and antioxidants compared to the foods that have been sprayed with herbicides and pesticides.

The moment your food is harvested, it begins to lose its nutritional value. If your food has to make a cross-country trip to your plate, it will have lost most of the nutrients along the way.

How can you determine if what you’re eating is truly “high-quality?”

If you’re not sure where to start with your high-quality food journey, look for the keywords: grass-fed, grass-finished, pasture-raised, and the USDA Organic symbol.

Local farms are always great options as well, and they are sometimes overlooked. It’s wonderful to be able to head straight to the farm and learn about how the animals are raised, what chemicals the farmers are (and aren’t using) on their crops, and their general sustainability practices.

Most local farms are the best organic option of all, even though they may not have the USDA-certified label.

As you know, I am all about VERY EARLY DETECTION (Essential #7)! The earlier you can detect, the sooner you can change your lifestyle and closely monitor changes. Thus, beginning the healing process and your new life of vibrant health! A key to early detection is knowledge about different types of testing and what could be found in the test results. Breast calcifications are common findings in mammograms, and inflammation from breast calcifications can be detected in thermography.
My soap box moment: While mammograms have their place and can be helpful, they are NOT the only test available! In fact, the radiation from the test can cause DNA damage which could increase your risk of breast cancer. The poking, prodding, and squishing that is involved in a mammography exam may rupture small tumors if they exist—causing cancer cells to spread throughout the body. Additionally, by the time a mammogram can detect cancer, a patient may have had tumor growth for up to 8 years!
However, fear not—there are safe, painless, noninvasive, and incredibly effective tests that you can use. Please check out: thermography, Galleri Test, RGCC Test, Prenuvo Test, and SonoCine Test. For further reading, please check out how DCIS Stage 0 treatments can actually lead to developing breast cancer!

What Are Breast Calcifications?
Breast calcifications are calcium deposits that often develop in your breast tissue. It can happen when abnormal cells grow unchecked inside the duct. The cells may get so crowded that some of them die, and your body can’t clear them away. This leads to those cells hardening (petrifying), and tiny areas of calcium forming in your breast tissue. Almost all of the time, breast calcifications are painless and too small to feel with your fingers.
Breast calcifications are so common that half of all women over age 50 will have some type of calcification show up on their mammogram. They are not anything to fear at all because the vast majority will be non-cancerous. The other small percentage may turn into DCIS Stage 0 at some point. For all types of breast calcification, you can just let them be and observe. You typically do not need to do any sort of treatment, but discuss this with your doctor.

Dear Friend,
For decades, we were told that high-fat foods caused cardiovascular disease. There is no denying that certain fats, particularly refined vegetable oils and trans fats, are harmful to your health.
But the real danger is not fat — it is sugar. So, before you eat too much Halloween candy, consider your heart.
Studies show that excess sugar in your diet, specifically, refined sugar, can cause a 3-fold increase in the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
And the sweet stuff is shown in numerous studies to damage the cardiovascular system, and other key areas of health, through uncontrolled inflammation, the production of free radicals, harmful effects on glucose and insulin function, and more.
Sugar has also been shown to reduce HDL (good) cholesterol and increase LDL (bad) cholesterol. Even worse, research suggests that sugar can turn LDL cholesterol into a much more dangerous form called oxidized cholesterol, which significantly increases cardiovascular disease risk.
Refined sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and refined carbohydrates such as white flour spike your blood sugar levels, which can eventually lead to chronically high blood sugar and insulin resistance — the primary drivers of diabetes.
This generates uncontrolled inflammation in your body and can lead to weight gain, both also major factors in heart disease. It can also make you age faster.

Fiber: friend or foe? If you have irritable bowel disease (IBD), which includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, you may need to cut back on fiber. According to a study in Gastroenterology, certain types of fiber can make symptoms worse by fueling inflammation in IBD sufferers.

When spice is not so nice: Spice containers are more easily cross-contaminated with bacteria than anything else in the kitchen, including cutting boards and trash can lids, says a new study in the Journal of Food Protection.

Pomegranates for colon cancer: German researchers, writing in the journal Immunity, have found that urolithin A, a metabolite of pomegranates, helps enhance immune function and ward off tumors in colorectal cancer cases.​

Many patients who come to our clinic ask the same question. “I feel like I’ve tried everything, what is preventing me from getting well?”
