Can This Natural Product Reverse Alzheimer's?

Excess Phosphates Cause Weight Gain

By Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, MDs


Phosphate is a compound made from oxygen and the mineral phosphorus. It's an important part of everything from your DNA to your cell membranes, and it's in something called ATP (adenosine triphosphate) that provides energy to cells.

But you can end up with too much phosphate in your body for a variety of reasons: excess dietary intake; a deficiency of calcium or magnesium; problems with your thyroid, parathyroid gland, or other hormones; and kidney disease or respiratory problems.

Special: This 'Water Glass Test' Can Save Your Prostate

Phosphates occur naturally in foods such as fish, pork, tofu, milk, chicken, scallops, lentils, squash seeds, beef, and whole grains. That's terrific, because you need a daily supply to stay healthy. The recommended intake for males and females ages 9 to 18 is 1,250 mg a day; for those over 18, it's 700 mg a day.

But the food industry has taken to adding phosphates to a wide range of foods to increase moisture retention, improve texture, and enhance flavor. Baked goods, fast foods, deli and prepared or processed meats, and colas are commonly filled with added phosphates.

A study in the journal Circulation revealed that the more excess phosphates you have in your diet, the more sedentary you are likely to become. This happens because a high-phosphate diet reduces maximal oxygen intake and interferes with fat oxidation, leading to weight gain.

Another study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that consuming more than 1,400 mg a day of phosphorus was “associated with higher all-cause mortality.” Unfortunately, the average American male between ages 20 and 60 consumes between 1,650 and 1,754 mg a day.

To make sure that you don't take in excess phosphates, follow these four steps:

1. Eliminate all red and prepared or processed meats from your diet.

2. Do not drink colas — sugar-free or sugar-added.

3. Avoid store-bought baked goods and foods with added sugars.

4. Read ingredient labels. Phosphorus can show up as dicalcium phosphate, disodium phosphate, monosodium phosphate, phosphoric acid, sodium hexameta-phosphate, trisodium phosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate, or tetrasodium pyrophosphate.

INVITATION​

I’ve been going to therapy again, and so I’ve been thinking and talking lately about the things we do for other people. If you’ve been in this space for a while, you will know that I call myself a recovering people pleaser. I used to do a lot of things for other people, because I knew other people would prefer if I did and as a result of my fear of judgement from them. I spent a lot of time shaping my life based on preferences that were not my own. I lived on the surface of my life, ignoring the beautiful depths and unique corners that existed below.
When cancer intruded on my life, that life couldn’t help being shaken to its core. Something like cancer inherently changes basically everything, and those things that aren’t changed are still viewed through the new lens that cancer inserts overtop. Initially, this is terrifying and awful, and everything in you wants to reject it all.
There is so much that I wish we didn’t have to go through as part of this journey. Many of those changes are difficult and painful to reconcile and accept. Our physical bodies are not the same, we are altered forever mentally and emotionally, and even our relationships can be impacted. But eventually, some of those changes were welcome to me. As I moved through the complex, confusing, frustrating maze that is cancer, I realised that a lot of the maze that I was exploring was myself. I was finally diving beneath the surface and getting at those depths and those corners that I had spent too long ignoring.
Cancer and the other big challenges of life present us an invitation to explore ourselves. It made me question everything, but that meant I also started asking questions of myself, of my patterns up to that point, of my behaviours and ways of thinking. Slowly, I started to realise that I could take this as not only the end of one chapter of my life, but also as the beginning of another.
Exploring the nooks and crannies of my soul and my mind, of what makes me me and of what I want to add to that picture, is an ongoing process. Every time I make a choice, do something new, take a risk, it’s now from a much deeper place, and therefore a much stronger place. Those decisions are rooted much more firmly in who I am instead of who I thought others wanted me to be, and each step I take from that place allows me to affirm what I’m learning about myself. Instead of every move taking me further from my picture and closer to someone else’s picture of me, each one takes me deeper into my exploration.
A lot of cancer sucks, there is no denying that. Some days you will feel like shutting yourself down, hiding away, and denying any possibility of good. But some days, when it feels possible and doable, accept the invitation. Plumb the depths, explore the corners you thought were dead ends, examine the changes. Get to know this person. You may discover something in the post-diagnosis you that is worth keeping around for your next chapter.

Diet and Nutrition: Recipes​

Stir fries and similar dishes became a favourite after I changed my diet because they are a delicious way to get in a lot of veggies, an important component of any anticancer diet. Recipes like this one for "Thai Yellow Curry Vegetable Bowls with Crispy Sesame Tofu" pack in the veggies, and they’re pretty versatile too! You can change them up entirely in so many different ways by choosing different sauces, veggies, bases you put them on, or proteins you add.I love this particular recipe because it uses a lot of anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and heavy-metal-chelating ingredients like cilantro, ginger, turmeric, cumin, and garlic. Even soy, though hotly debated, is becoming more and more accepted as something that is beneficial for estrogen driven cancers instead of detrimental.
