Cardiac Arrest Care Lagging for Women

Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart stops beating. The American Heart Association reports that over 350,000 people in the U.S. suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest annually, with nearly 90% of them fatal.

While these odds are alarming enough, a recent study from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City reports that when women survive, they are less likely to get aggressive, lifesaving care at the hospital.

Special: Heart Disease CAN Be Reversed . . . and I'm Living Proof

Women treated for cardiac arrest were 25% less likely to have an angiography, which is imaging to look for blocked heart arteries. Women were also 29% less likely to undergo angioplasty, a technique to open blocked arteries, the study found.

Though cardiac arrest was always considered to appear out of the blue, studies show that many of those who suffer it had warning signs, sometimes up to a month beforehand.

Never ignore symptoms that could indicate the presence of heart disease, which can spark an irregular heartbeat that could culminate in cardiac arrest. Studies also show that symptoms of impending trouble may occur up to a month before the arrest, and recur just prior to it.

Such symptoms may include one or more of the following: pain or burning in the chest, indigestion, shortness of breath, fainting, sweating, pain in the back, neck, or jaw, and anxiety or confusion.

Can you believe it? They're trying it again. Mask mandates, and even Covid jab mandates to attend school, are returning. Or, at least that's what they think...​

What is Tai Chi?



Tai Chi is both a martial art and a system of exercise that incorporates gentle, flowing movements patterned after the sort of movements found in nature. The movements are performed slowly when used for meditation or light exercise, or faster and with greater strength when used for martial arts and more vigorous exercise.



Most of the tai chi movements are performed standing, though there are variations that can be performed seated, too.



It has been called “moving meditation” and can offer a lot of benefits to both your mind and body (as you’ll see below).

What is Qi Gong?



Qi gong is a system of movement that focuses on repeating a specific movement or series of movements multiple times. Much of your body remains stationary during qi gong, with only certain body parts moving according to what aspect of your physicality you’re focusing on.

It relies heavily on mindfulness and intentionality to guide your qi (the life force believed to flow inside of all of us) to move more efficiently and thereby improve your overall physical health and wellbeing.

How are Tai Chi and Qi Gong Different?



While tai chi and qi gong utilize similar movements, there is one significant difference between the two: Tai chi utilizes your entire body, while qi gong is focused on a specific part of your body.



For example, with tai chi, you’ll move your entire body in order to increase circulation and muscular endurance. But with qi gong, you’ll only repeat a single exercise or breathing pattern that elevates your heart and enhances circulation without the muscular component.



Qi gong is often incorporated into tai chi lessons and practice. It’s used to focus on a single aspect of your mental, physical, and even spiritual health. Tai chi is a more generalized practice.

Best Ways to Lower Your Blood Pressure

A brisk walk, pumping iron, even a roll in the hay can make your systolic blood pressure rise — temporarily.

But if, like "Southland's" Regina King (svelte and athletic) or ex-quarterback Joe Montana (who'd think it?), you have chronic high blood pressure, you want to know it NOW.

New stats from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveal that 75 million Americans have HBP; only about half of them (54 percent) have their condition under control; and about 1 in 5 folks with HBP don't even know they have it.

So for everyone, whether you know if your BP is up or not, here's what to do:

Step No. 1: Get your BP tested; 85 percent of people with undiagnosed HBP have health insurance. So, no excuses — see your doc. No insurance? Most pharmacy chains do a blood pressure check for free. Just ask.

Your numbers? 120/80 is good; 115/76 is optimal (it slashes your risk for heart attacks and strokes in half). Dr. Mike's numbers are 115/75; Dr. Oz stays around 110/75.

Step No. 2: If your numbers are up, try the DASH diet — whole grains, vegetables, and fruit; 30 minutes of exercise daily (walking is our favorite); and if you have salt-sensitive HBP, limit salt intake to 1,500 milligrams a day. You'll slash your numbers by 8 to 14 points.

Step No. 3: Take everything down a notch. Stress leads to overeating, bad food choices, and lousy sleep habits — all risk factors for HBP. So make time for yourself, and try meditation to chill. No pressure, just a suggestion!
