Plant-Based Diet Cuts Diabetes, Heart Attack Risk

Maintaining a diet that consists solely of plant-based foods (or as close as possible) is the best way to prevent dying from heart attack. One reason this is true is because a plant-based diet reduces the risk of diabetes by 23%, according to a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Diabetes is a major risk factor for heart disease. Studies find that it doubles heart attack risk for men and quadruples it for women.

But it isn’t only people with diabetes who can benefit from a plant-based diet. Another study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that people who ate a healthy plant-based diet (as opposed to those who avoided meat, but consumed things like sweetened beverages, white bread, and potatoes) significantly decreased their risk of heart disease.

People who eat healthy plant-based diets usually qualify for the “150 Club,” a phrase coined by Dr. William Castelli, head of the famous Framingham Heart Study, to describe people whose total cholesterol level is less than 150. Total cholesterol includes a person’s levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.

Castelli said he had never known anyone in the “150 Club” to die of a heart attack. As studies are showing, a healthy vegetarian diet is more than avoiding meat. It’s also avoiding other foods and beverages that affect the human body negatively.

Ditch genetically modified soy sauce
Hey Jimi,



I use coconut aminos in a lot of my recipes, and today I want to share why!

Coconut aminos is a sub for soy sauce, made from coconut palm sap instead of soybeans. While it’s more expensive than soy sauce, there are a few reasons why we don’t keep soy sauce in our house anymore:

👉 The vast majority of soy in the US is genetically modified.

👉 Soy is an endocrine disruptor and mimics estrogen in the body.

👉 Studies have found that people with diets high in soybean products suffer a higher risk of diabetes and other metabolic issues, whereas a coconut-rich diet reduces that risk.



That’s enough to get me to ditch the soy!

Midwestern field trials suggest overuse of GMO corn reduces farmers’ profits, shows short-sighted approach of GMO crops

Corn genetically engineered to resist corn rootworm pests has become increasingly less effective, leading to economic losses for farmers, according to a new study. An analysis of data covering 12 years and 10 U.S. Corn Belt states reveals that farmers suffer economic loss from the overuse of genetically engineered corn designed to combat rootworm pests. The findings underscore the shortsighted approach of genetically engineered crops.

Christian Krupke, a Dean’s Fellow and professor of entomology at Purdue University, and 19 co-authors from 12 other universities in the U.S., China, and Canada reported their results in the most recent issue of the journal Science. The retrospective study demonstrated that the pest landscape has fundamentally changed in many key corn-growing areas of the U.S. since 2004, the initial year of broad adoption of transgenic corn hybrids targeting corn rootworms. While that is easier said than done during our nonstop, hectic days, it is important because prolonged stress wreaks havoc on our bodies.

"The body likes predictability. It likes things to run smoothly," explains Dr. Chauncey Crandall, world-renowned cardiologist and director of preventive medicine at the Palm Beach Cardiovascular Clinic in Florida.
Prolonged stress impacts the body in many different ways. "Our blood pressure goes up, our stress hormones go up," Crandall tells Newsmax's "Newsline."

According to the American Heart Association, when we are faced with a stressful situation, our bodies go into what is known as the "fight-or-flight" response, releasing stress hormones, including cortisol, into the blood. The hormones cause the heart to beat faster and constrict blood vessels, which results in an increase in blood pressure.
Stress also impacts our kidneys, increases fats in the blood and can affect blood sugar levels, according to Crandall. A six-year Ohio State University College of Medicine study found that participants who had higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their blood that did not decrease over the course of the day had larger increases in blood glucose levels. High blood sugar, especially in people with diabetes, can significantly increase the risk of heart disease.

"So stress is not good for the long term. Short bursts are OK. But chronic stress day in and day out can really impact the body and cause bad health," says Crandall, editor of the popular newsletter Dr. Crandall's Heart Health Report.
One of the best ways to live a calm, predictable life and boost health is to be on a regular sleep schedule, says Crandall.

"Go to bed at a decent time. Eight hours of sleep is recommended, so most people need to go to bed around 10:00 at night, and get up at an appropriate time in the morning, 7:00 or 8:00 or earlier," urges Crandall.
"A predictable life is going to bed at the same time every day. Waking up at the same time every day. Set your biorhythm in order, and the whole body starts working correctly," says Crandall.

Medications Containing Acetaminophen Crush Your Immune System Silently​

“Daily usage of a popular over-the-counter medication may compromise immune function while offering temporary pain relief, recent findings indicate.

Neutrophils, the most abundant white blood cells in circulation, form the first line of defense against bacterial infections. These cells respond quickly to invading microorganisms, traveling to infection sites where they engulf and destroy pathogens. This process, called phagocytosis, requires energy and coordinated cellular signals to operate effectively.

Common pain medications containing acetaminophen interfere with neutrophil function by disrupting the oxidative burst needed to kill ingested bacteria. Research indicates neutrophils exposed to therapeutic levels of acetaminophen show reduced ability to eliminate pathogens, with effectiveness decreasing by 22-38% depending on dosage. This impairment occurs even at recommended doses, with effects lasting up to 24 hours after taking the medication.”

Schools in Spain Required To Serve Fruit, Vegetables and Fish in Fight Against Obesity​

“All schools in Spain will be legally obliged to serve fruit and vegetables as part of their lunches and fish at least once a week under new rules aimed at reducing the amount of fried and fatty food served to children.

Hailed by the government as a key plank of the fight against childhood obesity, the rules brought in by royal decree this week will also compel schools to offer vegetarian and vegan meals.

Although Spain is famous for its Mediterranean diet, more than 40% of Spanish children aged six to nine were found by a 2019 study to be over the recommended weight, and 17.3% were classed as obese.”

Should You Toss Your Plastic Kitchen Tools for Health Reasons? Here’s the Scoop​

“Bonneau decided to “break up” with plastics in 2011 over concerns about pollution but also came to recognize the potential health benefits of avoiding the synthetic in the kitchen.

Instead of using a plastic cutting board, she uses wooden ones. One recent study called plastic cutting boards a “potentially significant source of microplastics in human food” and found that a polyethylene chopping board could shed between 7.4 and 50.7 grams of microplastics per person per year.

Bonneau stores food in glass or metal containers and saves all her jars to reuse later. Heating plastic containers can cause millions of microplastics and billions of nanoplastic particles to be released, one study found. (Microplastics have turned up in takeout food containers, plastic water bottles, paper coffee cups and more.)”

• Balsamic vinegar
• Salt + pepper

Directions:

  1. Roast radishes at 425°F for 15–20 minutes with olive oil.
  2. Sauté onion + garlic in remaining oil, add greens, and wilt.
  3. Add roasted radishes, season, and finish with a splash of balsamic.

✨ This dish is a great way to enjoy the whole vegetable, bulbs and greens and it pairs perfectly with your favorite protein for a complete, hormone-supportive meal.
