How Not to Die From a Heart Attack

Heart attack prevention and treatment have dramatically improved heart health for millions of Americans for over 30 years, with statistics showing that both the rate of hospitalizations and the death rate are at all-time lows.
These gains didn’t come about by accident — they clearly show that national efforts to prevent heart attacks and improve care for those who suffer them are paying off.

But despite this good news, heart disease remains the number one cause of death in the United States, killing about 375,000 people each year. Heart attacks will strike about 605,000, and 200,000 heart attack survivors will suffer a recurrent, and possibly fatal, attack.
In addition, the fact that more people are surviving heart attacks that used to be fatal has left greater numbers with serious heart conditions, such as serious heartbeat arrhythmias and congestive heart failure, both of which are also potentially fatal.
In light of the continuing risks, it’s necessary for everyone to have a heart attack prevention plan in place. A five-step strategy to avoid becoming another grave statistic includes exercise, eating a Mediterranean or plant-based diet, taking care of dental health, addressing sleep apnea if applicable, and getting help if you experience symptoms that could be a heart attack.

Dietary fiber versus forever chemicals​

Could your morning bowl of oatmeal help combat one of our most persistent environmental threats today? New research suggests increasing fiber intake might help flush harmful PFAS a.k.a. "forever chemicals" from your body.

Scientists studied 72 men with high cholesterol who consumed either a fiber-rich oat beverage or a low-fiber rice drink daily for four weeks. Blood samples were analyzed for 17 different PFAS compounds before and after the intervention.

While PFAS levels decreased in both groups, the fiber-rich intervention group showed significant reductions in long-chain PFAS, specifically PFOA and PFOS (two concerning compounds linked to serious health problems).

Researchers believe dietary fiber forms a gel in the gut that binds to PFAS compounds, preventing absorption and enhancing elimination. This mechanism mirrors how fiber reduces cholesterol by binding to bile acids.

While we need larger studies to confirm these findings, adding more fiber-rich foods to your diet might be an easy, affordable way to reduce your toxin burden while enjoying all the other health benefits fiber already provides.

  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • ⅓ cup date paste (8-10 pitted Medjool dates blended with ¼ cup warm water)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or avocado oil
  • 1 large egg (or flax egg for vegan option)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups mixed berries (fresh or frozen)
  • ½ cup sliced almonds, divided
  • Optional toppings: additional berries, sliced banana, or a drizzle of almond butter
Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x9-inch baking dish with a small amount of olive oil.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the rolled oats, ground flaxseeds, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the almond milk, date paste, oil, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
