Could Long Naps Shorten Your Life?

A frequent need to nap could be a red flag for future heart problems and a higher risk of early death, a new analysis concludes.

Long naps lasting more than an hour are associated with a 34% greater risk of heart disease and a 30% greater risk of death, according to the combined results of 20 studies.

Overall, naps of any length were associated with a 19% increased risk of premature death, a Chinese research team found.

"Our study indicates it's safest to keep [naps] under an hour," lead researcher Zhe Pan of Guangzhou Medical University said in a news release. "For those of us not in the habit of a daytime slumber, there is no convincing evidence to start."

Interestingly, long naps were linked with an increased risk of death in people who sleep more than six hours a night. Poor sleep also has been linked to high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and obesity, all of which increase the risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.

Good sleep habits, according to the CDC, include:

Sticking to a regular sleep schedule.
Getting enough natural light during the day, to positively influence brain chemicals related to sleep.
Exercising regularly, but not within a few hours of bedtime.
Avoiding artificial light near bedtime.
Keeping your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.

The difference between brown rice and white rice could be the difference between healthy blood pressure and hypertension. New research reveals how simple grain choices impact your cardiovascular health.

Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of nine major studies spanning over 182,000 participants, to examine the relationship between whole grain consumption and blood pressure outcomes. The study included diverse populations from the United States, Europe, and Asia.

Results showed that people who ate the most whole grains were 26% less likely to develop hypertension compared to those who ate the least. The protection also followed a clear pattern. Every 90 grams of whole grains consumed daily—equivalent to either three slices of whole-grain bread or one bowl of whole-grain cereal—reduced risk by 14%. When consumption goes up to 200 grams daily, whole grain provides a 22% risk reduction. Meanwhile, refined grains offered no clear protection.

With 1.28 billion people worldwide battling hypertension, these findings offer a remarkably simple solution. Stock your pantry with brown rice, quinoa, steel-cut oats, whole wheat pasta, and barley. Mushroom magic: Single dose shows lasting depression relief for cancer patients​

In a recent study from the world of psychedelic medicine, scientists have discovered that just one dose of psilocybin—the naturally occurring compound found in certain mushrooms—can provide lasting relief from depression and anxiety in cancer patients.

Here's what happened: 28 cancer patients battling major depression received just one 25mg dose of psilocybin combined with therapeutic support before, during, and after taking the dosage.

This creamy quinoa vegetable risotto transforms the nutrient-dense whole grain quinoa into a satisfying, risotto-style dish packed with colorful vegetables and aromatic herbs. Research shows that regular whole grain consumption like quinoa significantly reduces hypertension risks while providing complete protein and gut-supporting fiber for optimal health.​

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup (185g/6.5oz) quinoa
  • 2 cups (480ml/16oz) vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion (about 150g/5.3oz), finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup (70g/2.5oz) sliced mushrooms
  • 1 cup (120g/4.2oz) diced zucchini
  • 1 cup (150g/5.3oz) diced bell peppers
  • 1 cup (150g/5.3oz) cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1/2 cup (40g/1.4oz) nutritional yeast
  • 1/4 cup (10g/0.35oz) chopped fresh basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
  1. Rinse the quinoa under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a saucepan, bring the vegetable broth to a simmer over medium heat.
  3. In a separate large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add the sliced mushrooms, diced zucchini, and diced bell peppers to the skillet. Cook for another 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.
  5. Add the rinsed quinoa to the skillet and stir to combine with the vegetables.
  6. Ladle in a spoonful of the simmering vegetable broth into the skillet with the quinoa mixture. Stir continuously until the broth is absorbed.
  7. Continue adding the vegetable broth, one ladleful at a time, stirring frequently until the quinoa is cooked through and has a creamy consistency, about 15-20 minutes.
  8. Stir in the halved cherry tomatoes, nutritional yeast, and chopped fresh basil.
  9. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, until the tomatoes are heated through and the flavors are well combined.
  10. Remove from heat and serve the quinoa risotto immediately, garnished with additional fresh basil if desired.

Creatine for cognitive & muscular aging
It turns out creatine isn’t just for gym-bros!

In recent years, creatine has been getting a lot of attention (and rightly so) for its muscle-building and performance-enhancing benefits.

Creatine “plays a critical role in cellular metabolism, particularly during metabolically stressed states”, and “increasing availability of creatine in tissue may enhance cellular metabolism and thereby lessen the severity of injury and/or disease conditions, particularly when oxygen availability is compromised (anabolic workouts like weightlifting).”

Creatine can speed up your metabolism, increase your muscles’ ability to store glycogen to release glucose during training, and accelerate post-workout muscle recovery.

But according to the science, it may also do wonders to improve cognitive function and facilitate healthy aging.

Data from nearly 700 studies with more than 13,400 participants showed that a daily dose of creatine was very unlikely to have negative side effects, but incredibly likely to provide a whole lot of very real benefits.

You see, creatine combines with phosphate (naturally produced by the body) to form creatine phosphate, which is crucial for the production of energy in your cells. While this definitely helps improve athletic performance, there is also the ancillary benefit of boosted brain function.

Research shows that creatine “may improve short-term memory and intelligence/reasoning”, though its effects on other cognitive domains, including “long-term memory, spatial memory, memory scanning, attention, executive function, response inhibition, word fluency, reaction time and mental fatigue” proved conflicting.

In one study, participants were subjected to a battery of cognitive multiple-choice tests to analyze their brain function both before and after creatine consumption. No surprise, creatine consumption not only led to improvements in cognition, but actually alleviated the negative changes caused by sleep deprivation.

A study from early 2025 concluded that “creatine monohydrate supplementation may confer beneficial effects on cognitive function in adults, particularly in the domains of memory, attention time, and information processing speed.”

But the anti-aging, longevity-boosting effects of creatine don’t stop there.

One study found that creatine improved bone health by increasing bone mineral density and accelerated bone formation. It also discovered that the anti-inflammatory effects of creatine led to faster recovery times following the metabolic stress of exercise.

Most important of all, the data showed that creatine could combat age-related muscle wasting and sarcopenia, even without resistance training. Granted, the results were greatly improved when combining creatine supplementation and weightlifting. But just knowing that creatine alone can slow muscle wasting is an absolute game-changer!

The human body naturally produces around 1 gram of creatine per day. Experts (including the director of the Exercise & Sport Nutrition Lab at Texas A&M University believe that around 2 to 4 grams of creatine per day is the recommended dose.

Unfortunately, the main sources of creatine are red meat and fish, so those who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet need to find alternative sources. Pumpkin seeds and spinach contain certain amino acids that your body can use to produce creatine, but the only way to get creatine on a plant-based diet is to take a supplement.

Doses of up to 25 grams are believed safe, but such high doses are typically only taken by bodybuilders and professional athletes attempting to pack on significant quantities of muscle.

For the average person who is just taking creatine to get or stay fit, improve athletic performance, and protect their cognitive function and muscle mass as they age, a smaller dose (anywhere from 2 to 5 grams per day) will more than suffice.

But as the research above shows clearly, adding this one supplement to your life can do wonders to help you age gracefully!​
