Long COVID Poses Health, Heart Concerns

Although most people who have experienced COVID-19 get better within a few weeks, an estimated 10%-35% of the population has experienced prolonged post-COVID conditions — a condition of new, returning, or ongoing health problems that can last weeks, months, or years after the initial illness.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, long COVID is a serious illness that can result in chronic conditions that require comprehensive care and may cause disability.

Patients with long COVID can experience a wide variety of symptoms, with the most common being fatigue, shortness of breath, mental cloudiness (“brain fog”), and heartbeat irregularities, frequently felt as palpitations. People can be reinfected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus multiple times, and each time a person is infected, they have a risk of developing long COVID.

Long COVID is also associated with heart issues. Inflammation from the body's response to COVID-19 infection can lead to an increased risk of heart problems, even in individuals who experienced mild initial cases. These issues can manifest as heart attacks, heart failure, or other abnormalities, potentially indicating future cardiac and pulmonary diseases, according to the Mount Sinai Health System.

While rates of new cases of long COVID have decreased since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, it remains a serious public health concern, as millions of U.S. adults and children have been affected by long COVID.

There is currently no laboratory test that can determine if your symptoms or conditions are due to long COVID. There are also no proven treatments for long COVID, and current management of the condition focuses on ways to relieve symptoms or provide rehabilitation.

Of all the health complaints I field, brain fog is near the top of the list.

Today, let's discuss oxidative stress, free radicals, and, most notably, the implications of each on prostate cancer. When fighting against prostate cancer, the goal is to protect cells from damage that can cause unhealthy cell division. Therefore, protecting against oxidative stress is crucial in keeping the prostate healthy and discouraging the development of aberrant cells.



Why are prostate cancer patients particularly vulnerable to oxidative stress from free radicals?



Free radicals damage DNA and may be involved in prostate cancer initiation and promotion. It is possible that overproduction of free radicals results in tumor formation. Antioxidants can reduce the overproduction of such damaging chemicals, thereby reducing the likelihood of prostate cancer development and progression.



What are free radicals and oxidative stress, and how do they inflict damage?



Your cells have parts called atoms that like to be paired with two electrons on their outside shell. If a cell loses an electron, it would be unstable and attempt to steal (or donate) an electron from other healthy cells. This unpaired cell is called a free radical (or reactive oxygenated species (ROS) and, when overproduced, can cause a damaging process called oxidative stress.



Some free radicals we make naturally in our bodies, while external factors like radiation cause others. When ROS's are out of control, however, they scavenge your body to grab or donate electrons, damaging cells, proteins, and our genetic material (i.e., DNA).



What are antioxidants, and how do they combat free radicals?



As the name implies, "antioxidants" are substances capable of countering oxidation's damaging but normal physiological effects. Thus, antioxidants, which are found in food and dietary supplements, neutralize free radicals. But unfortunately, during the process of our body protecting us from oxidative damage, antioxidants get used up and stop working in protecting our healthy cells from further oxidation. That is why there is a constant need to replenish our antioxidant needs by consuming good food and properly using dietary supplements.



Antioxidants work better together than in isolation?



Antioxidant use in isolation is ineffective or can likely promote disease. For example, one study looking at either selenium consumed by itself or mixed with other antioxidants showed a 23% decrease in cardiovascular disease mortality and a 10% decrease in all-cause mortality in the selenium/antioxidant group compared to only selenium.



The same idea is the case with prostate cancer. Combining selenium with the full family subtypes of vitamin E works better than consuming just one type of vitamin E or selenium alone in protecting against prostate cancer.



What behaviors will help me in my fight against free radicals and prevent too much oxidative stress?

  1. Don’t smoke. Smoking produces numerous types of free radicals that contribute to heart disease and cancer.
  2. Moderate exercise has antioxidant value, while intense exercise can be pro-oxidative. Both forms of exercise are important for longevity, but consuming antioxidants from food and supplements can protect you from exercise-induced free radical production.
  3. Eat a diet rich in vegetables and fruits. To best defend yourself against free radicals, you should eat a diet high in all types of berries and vegetables – and yes, organic is best.
  4. Do not consume multivitamins with iron. Iron is a required element of human nutrition. However, an overabundant consumption of iron promotes free radicals that destroy healthy cells.
  5. Spice up your diet. Eating plenty of spices, including garlic, onions, rosemary, and turmeric, would be best. They all have powerful antioxidant properties.
  6. Don't eat crap. Consuming sugary foods and processed foods not only does not protect against free radicals but also promotes them.
What supplements will further help by boosting my anti-oxidant levels?
