Let’s Talk About Antioxidants

Our best strategy against prostate cancer is our vigilance, coupled with medical expertise, smart behavioral change, and precision supplementation. Our Roadmap involves detoxifying, reducing inflammation, strengthening our immune system, boosting our antioxidant levels, and encouraging anti-tumor activity.

Today, let’s turn our attention to antioxidants.

What are antioxidants and why do they matter?

Antioxidants combat free radicals, so let’s start with an explanation of free radicals.

Our cells have parts called atoms that like to be paired with two electrons. If a cell loses an electron, it becomes unstable and attempts to steal an electron from other healthy cells. Or failing that, to donate the remaining electron to a healthy cell that already has its normal pair. This unpaired or single-electron cell is called a free radical.

The presence of some free radicals is natural, but many others are due to exposure to external factors such as radiation. In modern life, we are constantly exposed to radiation; from microwaves to mobile phones to WiFi networks to air travel…there is no place to hide.

An abundance of free radicals in our body causes damage on a cellular level as they roam our body seeking to grab or donate electrons, thereby damaging cells, proteins, and DNA. This destructive process is called oxidative stress.

As the name suggests, antioxidants combat oxidative stress. Antioxidants are nutrients in the form of vitamins, minerals, or plant chemicals that neutralize free radicals. In doing so, the antioxidants sacrifice themselves, which is why we need to constantly replenish our antioxidant levels to combat the ongoing oxidative stress process.

Why are prostate cancer patients particularly vulnerable?

On a cellular level, free radicals damage our DNA, which in turn creates aberrant cells. Aberrant cell growth is a term that prostate cancer patients are unfortunately all too familiar with.

Scientific research has implicated free radicals and oxidative stress in both prostate cancer initiation and promotion. It is even possible that radiation therapy may encourage tumor formation to its by-product over-production of free radicals.

Knowing this, let's now discuss what you can start doing to boost your antioxidant levels thereby your body’s ability to combat this destructive, oxidative stress.

What can I do to boost my ability to combat oxidative stress?

As always, make smart choices. For example, here are 6 things you can start doing right now:

  • Don’t smoke. Beyond the obvious reasons, smoking produces numerous types of free radicals, which lead to aberrant cell growth and contribute to heart disease and cancer.

  • Stop eating crap. Processed foods frequently contain sugar, simple carbs, trans-fats, and additives that you would never choose to eat on their own. Processed foods which have been shown to promote free radical production.

  • Start eating smartly. Fresh, organic foods that are thoughtfully prepared. Lean protein, vegetables, and fruit (in particular berries) are the foundation to a healthy, antioxidant level boosting diet. And spice it up a bit: garlic, onions, rosemary, and turmeric all have powerful antioxidant properties.

  • Think before you drink. Do your best to avoid drinking anything that includes sugar. Green tea contains plenty of polyphenol antioxidants, including a catechin called EGCG. And enjoy a nice glass of red wine on occasion since it contains resveratrol, another powerful antioxidant.

  • Get moving. It is not just dogs and children that need exercise: the benefits to cancer patients from exercise are well known. That said, while moderate exercise will boost our levels of antioxidant values, overly intense exercise can have the opposite effect.

  • Avoid multivitamins containing iron. Although iron is a necessary mineral, its over consumption has been shown to promote free radical production.

What supplements will further boost my antioxidant levels?

All of our nutraceuticals are formulated to boost your levels of antioxidants, so this is one of the many benefits you will be gaining:

All great choices, and all backed by scientific research. Do not hesitate to contact Dr. Geo for specific recommendations.

What’s my takeaway here?

Let’s discourage any and all aberrant cell growth in our body because doing so will improve our health and our ability to combat disease. We can boost our antioxidant levels by making the smart dietary and lifestyle choices described above, and by adding one or more supplements. As always, it comes down to making smart choices and to committing yourself to doing what is necessary. You can do this! Let us know how we can help.

As always, thank you for choosing XY Wellness.

All the Best,
