For most of my adult life I treated energy the way most people do, as something to summon on demand. A second cup when the morning thinned out. Something sweet at three in the afternoon. I built a lot of work on borrowed energy before I understood that borrowing was exactly what I was doing, and that every loan carried interest my cells were quietly paying. There's a pattern that shows up often in people who begin paying closer attention to their health.
At first, things respond quickly. Even small changes in food or routine can create a noticeable shift.
Then, at some point, that momentum slows.
It's not because you gave up. In fact, you might be doing more, not less.

Jim, here is something worth sitting with for a moment…

I don't know about you, but as a kid, I got really excited when I got to have Lunchables…

I loved sliding that little tray out of the yellow box and stacking the crackers, meat, and cheese together. It was the most fun lunch ever!

But now I know there's a very deliberate, very nefarious reason why kids everywhere beg their parents for them.

A new study published in the American Journal of Public Health just exposed how Lunchables were engineered to be irresistible to children.

Lunchables were actually developed with Philip Morris – the tobacco giant behind Marlboro – who owned Kraft from 1988 to 2007.

They applied the same research they used to hook smokers to hook your children.

Here's exactly what they did:

  • Lunchables were engineered to feel like a toy. Philip Morris built 17 toy-like prototypes and watched children play with their food before they ate it. Their research found that kids wanted control, so they designed the compartments to let children build their own lunch. A child who plays with their food will beg for it again.

  • The box was designed to look like a present. Philip Morris put a gift-like band on the box specifically to make moms feel less guilty about choosing processed food for their kids.
  • Philip Morris ran a secret nicotine lab in Germany to hide their addiction research from tobacco regulators. Those same scientists were later used to develop chemical flavors for Low-Fat Lunchables, to make them taste better without the fat. Competitors called their strategy of making harmful products seem healthier "getting the guilt out of the product."


They aren’t the first corporation to use tobacco-industry tactics to engineer their products and addict our children so they can secure lifelong customers. This has happened all across the Big Food industry for decades.

And now look where we are as a country...skyrocketing sickness, outrageous rates of obesity, and a food system built to keep people hooked instead of healthy. It's disgusting, and people need to know the truth.

The best way to fight back is to share this information so everyone sees exactly how the food industry has been playing their cards against us. That's when they stop winning.

Tardigrade

The tardigrade, better known as the "water bear," is a microscopic animal that lives almost everywhere on Earth, from mountaintops to deep sea trenches to the moss on your roof. They’re barely half a millimeter long, with eight stubby legs and a slow, lumbering walk that earned them the nickname. Up close, they look like a tiny bear who decided to go swimming.​
What makes them remarkable is how much they can handle. When conditions turn harsh, they pulls in their legs, expel most of their water, and curl into a dried-out state called a tun, where their metabolism nearly stops. In that form they have survived being boiled, frozen near absolute zero, blasted with radiation, and even exposed to the vacuum of open space on a 2007 orbital experiment. Add water, and they swell back to life as if nothing happened.​

Vermont Bans Paraquat—Your State Should Be Next​

In May 2026, Vermont became the first U.S. state to ban paraquat. The U.S. still lags behind at least 74 other countries that have already stopped using the herbicide.

"We're the first in the nation, but the last in the world, so it's kind of a mixed feeling," said Vermont State Representative Esme Cole, who sponsored the bill.

Paraquat is the deadliest chemical in U.S. agriculture. The EPA's own warning is "one sip can kill," and the agency has documented deaths from accidental ingestion of tiny amounts. It has even deemed paraquat too toxic for golf courses, while continuing to allow it on the food we eat.

Farmers and farmworkers face the heaviest exposure. From 2013 to 2017, paraquat use doubled and Parkinson's diagnoses increased by 107%. Lawyers for paraquat-exposed victims say manufacturers Syngenta and Chevron knew for decades that paraquat destroyed the brain cells whose death causes Parkinson's.

Paraquat's damage reaches further than Parkinson's. It is linked to childhood acute myeloid leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, thyroid cancer, and birth defects. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 14. Paraquat is linked to at least one form of it. Seventy four countries banned it. Vermont just made it forty nine states to go.

Lab-Grown Chocolate Is Coming — But at What Cost?​

Some of the world’s biggest chocolate makers, including Mondelēz, Mars, and Barry Callebaut, are quietly moving toward lab-grown cocoa, with the first commercial products expected on U.S. shelves by late 2026. Chocolate grown in bioreactors, not on farms. They’re calling it a climate solution.

Cocoa farming supports 5 to 6 million smallholder families across West Africa, Latin America, and Asia, many already living in poverty. For these communities cocoa is their livelihood and their future. Lab-grown cocoa lets corporations walk away from that reality without ever being asked to do better.

There are also real questions about what this means for our health. These cell-cultured products enter the food supply through self-GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) safety pathways, a system that allows companies to essentially determine their own safety. Nobody really knows what regular consumption of these novel foods does to our bodies over time.

In the meantime, you can vote with your dollars. Equal Exchange sources organic, fair trade chocolate directly from small farmer cooperatives. This is chocolate that is actually grown on farms, not in labs, by farmers earning a fair wage.

Human Embryo Gene Editing Just Got More Precise​

New developments in human embryo gene editing are drawing sharp criticism from scientists and bioethicists. Researchers say they edited the DNA of early human embryos with greater precision than ever before, using a technique called base editing that makes more targeted changes to the genetic code than standard CRISPR. The work has been posted online but has not yet been peer-reviewed.

The lead scientist, Dieter Egli, says the technology is nowhere near ready for clinical use. In some embryos, the editing was incomplete, leaving a dangerous mix of edited and unedited cells. A previous attempt by the same team ended in what Egli described as “absolutely catastrophic consequences,” with entire chromosomes destroyed.

The scientific community is raising serious concerns, and for good reason. A Stanford biomedical ethicist warned that for a few million dollars, anyone could set up an IVF and gene editing lab and start doing this, with the result potentially being “really sick kids.”

That directive, offered by food politics scholar Marion Nestle during a press call ahead of the issue’s release, is accompanied by new polling that shows broad cross-partisan concerns over the health harms associated with ultra-processed foods.

The 17 articles in the special issue also include new research on topics including how tobacco giant Philip Morris Companies drew from its cigarette playbook to develop Lunchables in the 1980s and 1990s during the period when it owned Kraft General Foods, applying the flavor-enhancing technologies that had helped the company make lower-nicotine cigarettes to create more palatable fat-free cheeses and processed meats.”

This special issue of American Journal of Public Health lays out the case for government action over personal responsibility.

Regenerative Farms Lost Three Times Less Yield in France’s Droughts. Here’s Why.​

New data gathered on drought-hit French farmland reveals that the most promising solution could also be the greenest one.

In a study of more than 1,200 farms across the country, early findings show that highly regenerative farms recorded an eight per cent drop in crop yields compared with 22 per cent on their least regenerative counterparts following the 2023 droughts.”

Regenerative farming could save enough wheat during drought to produce 130 million baguettes according to this new French study.

“For decades, regulators viewed chlorpyrifos — a pesticide widely used in the U.S. and around the world — primarily as a neurotoxin that disrupts signaling in the brain and nervous system. But as the EPA reconsiders whether to continue to allow its use on foods like apples and soybeans, a new review indicates other insidious harms.

Published in April 2026 in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, the review synthesizes findings from nearly 300 studies worldwide published up to this year. These include laboratory experiments, animal studies, epidemiological research, regulatory documents, and risk assessments.

Growing evidence suggests chlorpyrifos may damage the brain, hormones, liver, gut microbiome, muscles, reproductive organs, and bones. Studies also link the pesticide to DNA damage and lasting changes in gene activity that may increase the risk of chronic disease.”

Together, the findings portray chlorpyrifos as what the reviewers call a “multi-system toxicant” that poses a more significant threat to public health than previously understood.

Here's something worth understanding about the breath.

When your nervous system shifts into stress, your breathing changes. It moves higher into the chest. It gets faster, shallower, smaller. You've felt this. It's the breath of bracing, of being on alert.

That part most people know. Stressed system, stressed breath.

Here's the part most people miss.

It runs both ways.

That fast, shallow, upper-chest breathing doesn't just reflect a stressed nervous system. It produces one. The body reads its own breathing as information. Shallow, quick breathing is the breathing of threat — so the nervous system, registering it, concludes there must be a threat, and stays braced to meet it.

The breath the stressed state created is now telling the body to stay stressed.

That's the loop. And once you see it, a lot of things make sense.

It's why you can be perfectly safe — nothing wrong in this moment, nothing actually happening — and still feel wound tight, unable to settle. Part of what's keeping you there is mechanical. You're breathing in a way that signals alarm, and your body is doing the sensible thing: believing the signal.

It's why "just relax" rarely works. The state isn't only in your thoughts. It's running in your breathing, breath after breath, holding itself in place.

And it's why the breath is such a precise place to intervene. The loop runs both directions — which means it can be interrupted from either side. You can't always think your way out of a stressed state. But you can change the breathing that's feeding it. Slower, lower, quieter breathing is the breathing of safety, and the body reads that as information too.

A Note from Just a Mom — DeeDee Hoover​

Being back on Pediatric Perspectives with Dr. Paul is always an honor — and this episode is one I’ve wanted to have for a long time.

We talked about something so many parents face and don’t talk about enough: what happens when you walk into a pediatrician’s office and feel pressured, manipulated, or flat-out bullied about vaccines.

I shared some of my own stories. Things I still remember like they were yesterday.

One of them happened when Ryder was about 16 months old. We had just moved to the Gardnerville, Nevada area, and a neighbor recommended a local pediatrician. I went in thinking I was interviewing the doctor — finding out if the practice would be a good fit for us. The doctor asked me to step outside for a moment while the nurse watched Ryder.

When we walked back in, I heard my son scream. The nurse had vaccinated him — the MMR, if I’m remembering right — without my consent.

I grabbed Ryder and headed for the door. The doctor called after me: “You didn’t pay for the visit.”

I turned around. I said some things I probably shouldn’t repeat here. And we left.

What I know now — and didn’t know then — is that you have every right to say no. Every right to walk out that door.

Dr. Paul said something in this episode I keep coming back to:

“If you are choosing not to vaccinate, you are standing on your God-given natural immune system that is powerful. In fact, it’s more powerful than an immune system that’s been hammered with a lot of vaccines. So you don’t need to live in fear. You can live in hope and faith.”
