Short Exercise Bursts Cut Heart Attack Risk

Mixing short bursts of vigorous physical activity into everyday life can halve a woman’s risk of a heart attack, research shows. An average of four daily minutes of this sort of activity appears to protect the heart health of women who don’t otherwise exercise, according to a report in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Specifically, women were 51 percent less likely to have a heart attack and 67 percent less likely to develop heart failure if they engaged in these short bursts of activity, compared to women who were completely sedentary.

For the study, researchers analyzed data on nearly 22,400 adults ages 40 to 79, 58 percent of whom were women, participating in the long-term U.K. Biobank health research project. All the participants said they did not engage in regular structured exercise, but they wore physical activity trackers for a week so researchers could gauge the bits of exercise they might get in their regular daily lives.

Results showed the more these tiny bursts of activity stacked up in a woman’s life, the lower her risk of a major heart-related health emergency. Women who got an average 3.4 minutes daily were 45 percent less likely to experience any type of heart health problem such as heart attack, stroke, or heart failure. Even a minimum of 1.2 to 1.5 minutes a day was associated with a 33 percent lower risk of heart attack and 40 percent lower risk of heart failure.

However, men didn’t get the same benefit from short bursts of activity. Men who averaged 5.6 minutes daily were only 16 percent less likely to experience heart-related health problems, and a minimum of 2.3 minutes produced just an 11 percent reduction in risk.

Hey ,

There’s no other way to say it. The modern world creates chronic illness.

There are different ways people describe the same experience.

We change our sheets every week. We flip the pillows. We buy organic everything.

Then we sleep on the same mattress for 8 years and never once ask what's inside it.

Here are 7 reasons you might want to.

  1. Formaldehyde is in there. The same chemical used in funeral homes works as a cheap adhesive in conventional mattresses. No label required, so most people have no idea they're breathing it all night.
  2. The VOCs don't stop off-gassing. One memory foam mattress, independently tested, came back emitting 61 different VOCs. Benzene and naphthalene included. Both known carcinogens.
  3. Fiberglass is hiding under the cover. Actual glass fibers, used as a flame barrier. If the cover ever comes off, they can spread through your entire bedroom.
  4. You spend a third of your life on it. 8 hours a night, breathing whatever's in there. I'm careful about what goes in my body during the day. Ignoring the other third made no sense.
  5. Flame retardants are standard. Toxic chemicals sprayed on so the mattress passes flammability rules. They're on the MadeSafe Restricted List of 6,500+ banned ingredients, which most mattresses couldn't pass.
  6. The industry isn't regulated. Walter Bader, who had conventional mattresses tested for his book Sleep Safe in a Toxic World, compared it to cigarettes in the 1930s: completely unregulated, and everyone assumes they're safe.
  7. There's a clean version that costs less than you'd think. That's the one that actually got me to replace mine.

Most people try to fix brain symptoms by working on the brain.
