I love fig newtons! I haven't had any in years. Might have to look for some next shopping trip.

And any kind of Sears catalogue was great. The Christmas one was "redder" and had more glitz, but man, I could spend hours, browsing through a fat Sears catalogue. I remember they used to sell engines. I looked up a Chrysler 426 hemi one time (I think it was that one, or it might have been a 440 Magnum). Anyway, it was $725.00! That was SO much money back then, but wowza, you could order a brand new engine for your race car from Sears. How cool was that?

The last time I ordered from a Sears catalog was in the late 90s. It was a wooden tobbagen (sled). Since I intended to use it on snow, since I lived where it snowed at the time, I treated the wood with a sealer. That actually caused the wood to splinter and peel apart where it was curved. They gave me a full refund for their faulty product.

I still have one of those double-ended can openers in my silverware drawer. One end being pointed, to open a can with no pull tab (which don't even EXIST anymore) and one end rounded, to pull up a canning lid from a Mason jar. I actually do use that one a lot, but alas, never the pointy end.

I have fond memories of visiting my Nana way back when, and she knew how much I loved pineapple juice, so she always bought a big can of it (remember those big cans of juice?) when I was coming to visit, and I used one of the pointy can openers to open those.

I have a couple of the double ended can openers with magnets. I epoxied a magnet to one of them. I keep them on the fridge, so I know where they are. The P98 types are still available on Amazon in both stainless and carbon steel. I have both types, since I ordered the high carbon type after my stainless one went missing. A couple months later, I found it.

I'm not good at finding pictures of old things, but last night I was remembering pimiento cheese spread. Does anyone remember that? I LOVED that stuff. I know now that it's cream cheese mixed with pimientos, but back then it was just this pink stuff that came in a little 4-oz jelly glass with a metal snap-on top (I think it was metal). Anyway, I loved sandwiches made with that when I was a kid. My mom bought it all the time, and when we finished (mostly *I* finished) the cheese in the glass, she'd wash the glass and it stayed on for milk glass duty. We had tons of those little 4-oz glasses.

I prefer making my own usually with Biquinho peppers and mine has no cream cheese in it.
Please note this recipe requires a lot of mixing but it is truly worth it!
  • 2 cups Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • ½ cups Mayonnaise (you can add more for a creamier texture)
  • 2 Tablespoons diced Biquinho Peppers, drained
  • ¼ teaspoon Paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon Onion Powder
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
Mix cheese and Mayo till creamy then add in the peppers mix again add spices mix again then add S&P mix again. Let set in fridge for about an hour to let flavors marry.

You can still get that. It's shelf stable for a few months, good prepper item. I like it too.

I saw that when I searched for it. I was trying to find a picture of the old kind, in the glass jar with the metal top. Everything is plastic now. I need to find some pimiento pepper seeds and grow some, then make my own.

I saw lots of recipes online for shredded cheddar and mayo, but it wouldn't be the same. The good stuff is in cream cheese. :)

love you like a brother but nope.

(You can tell Paula Deen I said cream cheese doesn’t belong in pimento cheese!)

It's so sad that all the pictures Jimi posts disappear after a short time. All there are are boxes with an X in them. It would be nice to go back once in a while and reminisce.
I agree, the ones from facebook do that but the ones from Pinetress always stay
