Sorry guys busy day catching up on yard work. Time for bonfire with the kiddos and some marshmallows. Apologies in advance for possibly drunk posts later tonight
I'll be looking forward to them! Since I quit drinking one of my simple pleasures is to watch others get faded for the entertainment value! LOL:shades:

We are still dealing with FEMA.

If you ever get a chance to dance with FEMA (3 years now) just bash your head into a wall until you smarten up.

If I ever get done dealing with them I swear from that day forward I'll never complain again.
goodluck with that, 11 years post katrina and we still have to deal those assclowns.

My major resistance to win10 is that it's 10, not 10.1... I've learned since Dos4 to wait till it's a .1 or at least a .01 release, to avoid some of the worst of being MS's beta testers.

But this inquiring mind would love to know... what exactly makes 10 better than 8.1? If they ever release a 10.1, I might be interested, if I know exactly why it's better.

Andria
You are actually misunderstanding how Microsoft does versions these days. Here is an example. Windows Vista was garbage. Windows 7 was significantly better, and could have been considered Vista version 2. Windows 8 was likewise garbage, Windows 10 is much better and is really more like version 2 of Windows 8.

So how does it differ from 8.1? Since I've heard that 8 had a lot of problems, but I've seen VERY few issues with 8.1.

8.1 is what finally drove me over the edge to jump to Mac. I had to put a wrap on it to make it act like 7, but thought it still sucked.

I don't have any major problems with it -- as I said, in 13 months of constant use, it's only done the solid-freeze thing twice. I did download a program to give me back my standard desktop and Start btn; is that what you're referring to? Because I agree, the screen with all the lil blocks is pretty but rather useless.

A lot of it is under the hood type improvements so it runs faster and better. The most visible difference is that the Start menu has been improved from 8.1, and the "Charms Bar" has been eliminated. They have added Virtual desktops, though for the average user this isn't important. Notifications are handled better.

Well, getting rid of that damn charms bar really WOULD be a huge improvement -- every time I need to scroll up to hit the Alert button, that stupid charms thing gets activated so I have to mouse away and then hit the scroll bar more precisely. :gaah:

I've heard there's a way to disable the charms, but haven't been motivated (yet) to go hunting for it. I did have to go hunting for some of the things I use, like the command prompt screen, the task mgr, and I think a couple others.

I did manage to deactivate the damn on-screen keyboard the very first week I had the stupid thing. It's a laptop, not a fucking tablet, even if it is a touchscreen! I don't use the laptop's keyboard though; I use my old regular keyboard, because the keyboard drawer is at the correct height for typing! -- one item I bought when I got the laptop was a USB dongle, with 3 USB3 and 4 USB2 ports, so I could plug in all my normal I/O devices -- the touchpad is clearly directly from hell.

Relatively painless, but I'm still astounded that after moving the OS to Disk1, I actually had to drop to the CMD line and use Diskpart to remove the boot partitions on the HDD Disk0. Really? Win 8.1 and I have to use DOS?

No, I was too late. I never win anything either.
It's not to late to enter. You still have 18 days counting today to KEEP entering.

I have similar spells. Tire goes flat, put the spare on then find out it's flat. Get that taken care of, finally get home, find out the power is out for who knows what reason, pull the blinds up, they decide they want to fall completely from the window. I have plenty of these days. Had the DVR box replaced twice 2 days ago.

I had Vista, got used to it and really, had no problems with it. 9 years later, that computer bites the dust, I end up with 8.1. Couple weeks ago, I wake up and have Win10. Wanted to scream, because I tried it out a while back and IT SUCKED. This go 'round, I'm actually not having issues, except where to find things again, but I got used to Vista, I guess I can do this, too. You just really have to comb the settings to be sure every tiny little thing is set how YOU want it.

I'm 19 years sober but I still know how wonderful a drink would be until the cops get here.

What the hell do parrots watch? My boy kidden (who went sleeping in sept. 18yo:() used to watch anything Animal Planet whenever it was on!

Pete likes monsters and serial killers. Rowdy likes Judge Judy, game shows and soap operas. Merlin likes Ohio State football. Oobie likes everything.

11 years post katrina

We drove down to Biloxi after it happened. Our friend lived in D'Iberville, and his house was the only one left standing on the street.

I take that back. The only other house had floated inland and settled down on his driveway. Nothing was salvageable but a few bottles of booze. Black mud everywhere, inside and out.

We saw a lot that weekend, and it fucked us up pretty bad. Overwhelming. Can't imagine what NO was like. Probably one of the most important road trips we ever took. No way you can comprehend that much devastation through a TV screen or photos.

Now that I've bummed everyone out, allow me to shove a unicorn up my ass and I'll vomit some rainbows for the group. Pics incoming.

I still drop to that screen a lot... to flush the DNS cache, or check the tracking when my website is doing something weird... or not doing anything at all. Or, strangely enough, if you want to rename a whole directory of files using * or ?, you can still do that in the command prompt screen... try doing that, Windows. Because you can't. :D

HILARIOUS, and true! I still have a bunch of Unix utilities that were ported to Dos. Things windows can't do. But I renamed rm to nukeit, just so I can't POSSIBLY make an rm -r mistake again. Repairbot, spelling matters. U N I X

I don't know a real lot about actually using *nix; I've gotten accustomed to some of its quirks just because of running my websites on *nix (actually some flavor of Linux.. FreeBSD maybe) hosting, but never any command-line access. I might get into it one day, if I'm feeling in need of a new thing to learn -- DOS was fun! Batch files were funner! :D Mostest fun was when config.sys loaded all the device drivers into the Ram between 640-1024, and you could move some of those around in there, with switches. I used to get $50 a pop for doing that for folks. Then they went and changed everything... *sigh*

Lol.. had a customer once. Nicest, most innocent seeming guy ever. He used to ask me to come by a LOT, and "fix" his computer. It was always system changes made by malware, so first I had to Orkin his machine, THEN i could set it all straight again. One day I got to thinking, Hey, they HAVE an IT guy, why does he keep calling ME up and asking me to clean up his.. oh hellz. I laughed my azz off. He was laying down with dogs, and getting up with fleas at work. Didn't want the owner knowing..

They do a lot better with every other major version.

Here is a pretty decent article with some of the differences.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/opinions/windows-10-vs-windows-8-1

Basically they fixed and improved things from 8.1 and gave us back a UI that is a lot closer to win 7.

MS will be focusing most/all efforts on Win 10 these days. They really want one platform across all devices, which is a smart thing to try to do.
