They do a lot better with every other major version.

Here is a pretty decent article with some of the differences.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/opinions/windows-10-vs-windows-8-1

Basically they fixed and improved things from 8.1 and gave us back a UI that is a lot closer to win 7.

MS will be focusing most/all efforts on Win 10 these days. They really want one platform across all devices, which is a smart thing to try to do.

I bought a new Win-10 laptop a few weeks ago, with the SS drive the thing is the fastest machine I've ever owned. Win-10 was simply to figure out after using 7 for several years.... skipped 8, thank god.

I hope they get this right. A LOT of business didn't, or couldn't because of legacy software, get away from XP. Vista was total trash, and 7 was better but took a LONG time to be fully supported by CUSTOMERS, which is cash for feature development, bug repair, updates..

Backward compatibility with legacy software AND hardware is really going to be critical if they want to get people to be interested in migrating to future OS's quickly.

I don't know a real lot about actually using *nix; I've gotten accustomed to some of its quirks just because of running my websites on *nix (actually some flavor of Linux.. FreeBSD maybe) hosting, but never any command-line access. I might get into it one day, if I'm feeling in need of a new thing to learn -- DOS was fun! Batch files were funner! :D Mostest fun was when config.sys loaded all the device drivers into the Ram between 640-1024, and you could move some of those around in there, with switches. I used to get $50 a pop for doing that for folks. Then they went and changed everything... *sigh*

This made me curious enough to go looking info my host's config... it's actually Apache! The FreeBSD must have been the last host I used before this one.

I did the same. Heard the horror stories about 8 and rode it out with 7 until my friend wrecked my computer beyond repair. Now using 10.

Yup.

It will be years before most businesses think about going from win 7 to anything else. XP is dead and it took MS not giving any more security updates for that to happen. Win 7 is not going anywhere for a while, and Win 8 will never see most business customers, Win 10 might, depending on how things play out.

Basic rule of thumb with any OS, if it works well enough and you are happy with it, don't mess with it until you are forced to or you have a need for something offered by a newer one.

My laptop came with 8, I hated it and ran 3rd party software (Classic Shell I think it was) to be able to use it without wanting to hurt people. 8.1 was an improvement to it. I got 10 on my laptop as soon as I could and never looked back. I upgraded from Win 7 Ultimate on my desktop to win 10. Also no regrets there. I always upgrade my laptop first to try things out, if I like it, it goes on my other pc.

I had a server emulation running on my PC for awhile, but I'm kinda old-school... do something with code... upload... refresh site... ad infinitum until it looks right. Even though I run Joomla, I constantly tweak the CSS and sometimes the PHP for design, so the old school way works fine. FileZilla is excellent, and my 125mbps DL and 25mbps upload makes it pretty painless.

With apache server, I'm running joomla right on my desktop machine. When everything is good, I ftp the entire website up to the host site.

I still drop to that screen a lot... to flush the DNS cache, or check the tracking when my website is doing something weird... or not doing anything at all. Or, strangely enough, if you want to rename a whole directory of files using * or ?, you can still do that in the command prompt screen... try doing that, Windows. Because you can't. :D

Andria

Ever mess around with powershell? you can do some amazing things with it. Kind of like the command prompt jacked up on steroids.

I'm just having the worst few weeks. My friend's 19 year old son, who is like my nephew, has terminal cancer. That has been devastating, and I just don't know how to even begin dealing with it.

Everything else is just minor aggravations. Broken fridge, tablet going haywire, broken dvr (which has 4 parrots screaming because they want to watch TV, and don't understand why they can't).
Parrots are poor on electronics.

I'm supposed to be making my chore list for the day but am instead squonking my brains out and playing on VU. I NEED MOTIVATION, lol.
After finishing my morning coffee (the unexpected mocha) I got dressed and went and umpired a youth baseball game. Seven innings, 1:45 start to finish. Came home, changed into the grubbies and finished splitting the wood that's been piled in the driveway, and soft-stacked it until I can build a new rack to store it in. Ran the blower on the driveway after cleaning up the firewood detritius, then helped the boy with doing the yard. Showered then had dinner, and just sitting down here to catch up on a the GFY'ing that has transpired since this morning. :D

They certainly can be, which is another good reason to have a tablet. No dancing on the keyboard, or ripping the keys off :) Merlin can play crossword puzzles, and Oobie can scroll and make pics bigĝer or smaller to her heart's content.

I live in an all Apple world as my wife is a photographer. I have an iPhone but I was ok with Windoze. Fast forward to a few months ago and my box died. Wife and all the kidz are on me to get an iMac. Nope. I know everything. So another Windoze box with Windoze10.

Last ever MS product. What a steaming pile of shit. I hate this computer so much I'd like to...................well at any rate I'll get by.

But for a fact I'm going Apple moving forward.
Go with Linux - either Ubuntu or Mint. For basic stuff like Web and email, they're good OS's and they run on hardware that you can pick up on the very cheap. I have two Linux servers running here at home (both Ubuntu) and usually have a machine running the desktop flavor for general use (hardware failure killed the one I was using). But other than those, I'm an Apple guy as is the rest of the family. Windows makes me crazy.

Friends don't let friends do Windows.:tantrum:
