I would think the smoke and smell would be bothersome...

Trade winds blowing all the vog south into Kau and Kona

I flew into Kona yesterday and it was icky on that side

The sky is amazing though - there is lightning coming off it periodically - I finally saw it a few minutes ago

Hi OPs. Just read through the last three pages or so of your posts. Got a couple of out-loud laughs, thank you for that.

@inspects I used to read off-the-grid type build-it-yourself house construction books, remember reading about the technique of building with dry-stacked cinder blocks with the "tunnels" in the block filled with poured concrete and rebar. Funny how that kind of thing hangs around until it's actually useful. Also using vegetable materials of various sorts as fillers for poured concrete isn't such a new idea. Seems like the examples I read years ago used sawdust to lighten and provide some insulating quality to concrete.

The technique that always caught my imagination was rammed earth, walls about 14" deep, something like a 14-hour heat exchange rate, slathered with adobe on the outside and built with overhang roofing to keep falling rain off the wall surfaces. I just liked the idea of those thick walls and windows/doors set into deep ledges, and the cool interiors that slow heat exchange would create in hot, dry climates. Would never work here - it's just too wet.

Now that I'm thinking about it, there were all kinds of alternative materials and techniques. Stacked straw bales secured with rebar and covered with adobe or sprayed cement; logs cut into 14" lengths, covered with narrower strips of insulation and set with mortar; sand or dirt packed into bags and held in place with short sections of rebar driven through the bags into the rows below. Where there is a need, someone will come up with a cheap way of getting a thing done. That's not to say though that it's always practical or even possible, considering construction codes and inspections and the like. I'm sure some of these techniques came from areas where building inspectors don't exist, or were used on non-dwelling structures.

Saw a Bob Vila show once where he and crew used old beams out of a barn to create a floor covering that looked amazingly like brick. Those beams had to have been about 3" thick and maybe 8" wide, so a "slice" about 5/8" thick was roughly the shape of a brick, and the thickness of brick veneer. He mixed polyurethane and sawdust to make a grout, laid those beam slices with the grout between, sanded and cleaned everything, then coated the whole floor with about four or five coats of poly. It was just gorgeous.

OPs hope you had a good night's rest, and are having a productive day. @JuicyLucy hope you and the Mr. are staying safe and that the real estate issue is resolved to your benefit.

Gee, folks, this is not VI or ECF, so you can say all those four-letter words here. Don't tell me that you don't want to, because it is demeaning. If you can type d*ck, you can type dick. If you can think and type c*nts, you can type cunts. If you can type f!?k, you can type fuck. Those words are all acceptable on VU. Are you afraid it makes you less by typing the correct spelling? No, because you thought and said the word anyway, no matter how you chose to misspell it. You are not a better person or a worse person one way or another. So you don't like dicks, cunts, assholes, or fuckheads. Gee, neither do I, so we're all in the same boat. :D

How was your day, Rich?
Glad you asked, because I just processed a few pictures of the day's work (and the last week). That little area of trees that we call "the orchard" is divided right down the middle by a row of very old and large Caragana, so I often refer to the east orchard and the west orchard, even though they really are just one group of trees. I have finished the pruning (and picking up storm damage) for the east side and two rows of the west, but the west won't get finished until I get some more important chores out of the way. I did manage to mow both sides today after the final cutting and removal of limbs.

Here's two pictures of the east side: You saw that row with a trailer in it a few days back.
100_0600.jpg

100_0601.jpg

Here's a shot of the west side, which needs some serious pruning and even removal of a couple dead trees.
100_0602.jpg

And here's the brush pile created by the removal of about 14 trailer loads of limbs:
100_0603.jpg

And, believe it or not, that is less than 5% of all the trees that need pruning here.

Now, you ready to hire me as your personal groundskeeper? :)

Looks really nice. I kinda like the trees in a row gig. You don't see that often with just regular non-fruit-nut bearing trees. Looks like a nice spot to have a BBQ and picnic table.

Damn near all the trees here (hundreds - really) were planted in neat row/column arrangements.

When I finally find enough extra cash to buy a new BBQ, I will invite all of you to bring your tents and camp out in the orchard for a few days. After we get Little John turned into a bunch of steaks (100% grass-fed Angus, no hormones, no drugs), even you non-meat-types will enjoy it. And I'll even build a couple picnic tables.

BTW, the farthermost east row in the orchard is wild plum, and the Caragana's other name is Chinese Pea (though we have never tried to eat them), and the far west row is lilacs, but there's two cherry trees embedded in that row, so maybe "orchard" isn't totally insane, :D

How far are you from Sturgis?

We have a hundred wild plums, two pie cherries, one Russian olive (yes, I do collude with it) and some other non-edible fruits (forgot their name). I have not seen an apple tree at any neighboring ranches (though I have heard it is possible) and no way in hell will peaches or any of those southern fruits survive the winter here.

Nice, beautiful location. I haven't been to Sturgis in decades. I'd bet that town has grown some through the years.
It's current population is still under 7,000 and they do their best to not have any large stores. What they mostly have is bars to satisfy the one million visitors to the annual bike week (mostly Harleys) each August.

Are they doing any oil sand mining in SD, or just north?
I believe that is all in the Bakken in western North Dakota, Some shale oil and coal in Wyoming. Eastern South Dakota seems balls-to-the-wall over corn for ethanol. Just ranching on my side of the state.

I hope we can get him done this summer. I am scrooging every penny to pay for that... and generator installation... and hay in the fall... and .... Sigh.

Hopefully you don't have an early winter, like the late summer. That would probably put a hurtin on many folks.

I got used to forums where those words were censored, even when there were no mods to do anything about it. Eventually, I got kicked off those sites. Feckless bastards didn't like a smartass female.

There was just one thread I followed, that was the squonk thread, lately it's dead, I suppose most of the folks moved on due to nat-zi style moderation.

About five years back, we had a nasty blizzard the first week of October. Killed 100,000 cattle and a few people. Some people had to go three months without electricity (luckily, they had generators).

There was a time when I thought vegetarians were just too chickenshit to eat meat. Then, they came out with vegans. Give it time, and they'll be banned in Texas for harming the exonomy.

I was reading on the news regarding the fire in Colorado, they were calling for possible snow down to 5500 feet....that is nuts for June.

Somehow, ecf appeared on my Tapatalk. Without even checking it out, I deleted it. From the sound of it, I made a smart decision by accident. WTF do they talk about anyways?

You would really need to read their forum....it reminds me of being in third of fourth grade, if you say something derogatory about anything, you may get your hand slapped with a wooden ruler.
