The Benefits of Fasting

Fasting means going voluntarily without food for a period of time. The practice dates back centuries, and has often been performed as a religious or cultural ritual. However, it is also an excellent way to control your weight and promote heart health.

For many years I have used single-day fasts, as well as fasts lasting up to 14 days, as a way to benefit my health and the health of my patients.

Special: Stubborn Belly Fat Can Be Fixed. Naturally.

In terms of weight loss, fasting is obviously beneficial simply because going without food for even a day reduces the amount of calories you’ll be taking in over the longer term. So you’re already giving your diet a head start.

But there’s more to it than just saving calories. Being in a state of semi-starvation puts your body on alert; it starts using stored fat for energy. As a result, cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood begin to disappear.

Fasting also cleanses the body and gives your organs a break from constantly metabolizing food. As a result, immune response appears to improve, blood pressure goes down, and people report feeling more clear-headed when they are on a fast.

If you’re doing a multiple-day fast, you’ll get hungry for the first few days, and probably want to go to bed earlier than usual to avoid eating. I find the third day is the worst. After that, your body becomes accustomed to it.

During a fast, I drink water or juice. Also, for fasts lasting longer than a few days, consult your doctor, of course, and this is also true if you have certain medical conditions, such as diabetes.

One of the most common things I hear people struggling with digestive symptoms say is "I'm taking probiotics, glutamine and drinking bone broth but my digestion is still not working right".

Here's the thing, your digestion is actually far more complex than just slapping probiotics and bone broth on it and calling it a day.

It's important to assess brain function, the entire metabolism from top to bottom and microbiome diversity/dysbiosis to optimize digestion.

One of the biggest thing I see overlooked in individuals suffering AND practitioners supporting them is the hidden reason behind digestion problems.....hormones.

Hormonal balance and gut health have a symbiotic relationship.

One thing we know for sure about 5G is that we don’t know ANYTHING about 5G. It’s never been tested for safety or, if it has, the findings were suppressed, which is ominous in itself.

I doubt there is any way to stop 5G coming. Heck, it’s not just about crooked telecommunications companies riding roughshod over safety concerns and public protest. It’s also about dopey, ignorant people who WANT this technology. They are dreamily unconcerned about safety. I just want faster wi-fi, faster gaming, more connectivity. Nothing can hurt me mentality. It’s stupid but it’s out there in spades.

WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO IS THIS: 5G is bad news, it’s never been tested and it is scientifically known to be more harmful than anything that has gone before. You don’t need to “test” it when it’s known to be a more biological damaging form of radiation.



YOU NEED PROTECTION, STARTING NOW. I know which is the best 5G protector device on the market and… guess what? THIS COMPANY HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN ALREADY BY THE TELECOMS COMPANIES. It’s started up again (Holland).

But how long will you be able to get this equipment? Be in no doubt: they were shut down because their equipment works. Hundreds of other wannabes just shout and make claims. But telecoms giants are not concerned about THEM.

They want this effective equipment GONE.

PAIN & HEALING
When we imagine a cancer patient, we envision the physical side effects of treatment, the weight gain or loss, the hair loss, the gaunt expressions we see in movies. Everyone is so focused on the physical pain of treatment, what we’re all afraid of and picture when we think of treatment, that medical professionals don't think to mention the other types of pain we may experience and we don't think to ask. I don't believe we are prepared well for the mental and emotional pain of treatment nor for the management of this type of pain. We have pills for physical pain and tricks like Claritin to soothe the discomfort of bone pain; we know exactly where to go and what to do if we are in physical pain, but mental and emotional pain? We do not like to face those kinds of pain, or perhaps think we shouldn't be feeling this way at all, and so we often have no idea where to even start in beginning to heal them.

Acknowledging these feelings as valid and important is a great starting place. Operating from this place of acceptance of yourself and your feelings, you will be more likely able to figure out what exactly they are and follow them back to discover where they are coming from. You can't start healing those roots until you know where they lie and where they lead.

This healing may require asking or granting forgiveness; it may require learning to love yourself unconditionally; it may require building and recognizing your own self worth; it may require the expulsion of some pent up rage and frustration and resentment and then countering those emotions by refocusing on the good, on the positive, on what you have to be grateful for no matter how small it may be. I can't tell you exactly what those emotions may be for you, where their roots lie or what will heal them, but the one thing I know for sure is that there is only one way to reach the true healing of any pain.

I’m reminded here of a picture book and song I loved as a child called "Going on a Bear Hunt". A family goes on a hike to try and catch a bear, and they keep meeting these obstacles like tall grass and a huge, squelchy mud puddle. They try to go under them, they try to go over them, and what they eventually come to on every one of those obstacles is this: “We can’t go over it. We can’t go under it. Oh no! We've got to go THROUGH IT!”.

And I think I understand now what that book was actually trying to teach kids: that you will inevitably come up against obstacles in your life, and the only way to get to the other side is by facing them head on and going through them. The same is true of pain. To get to where you can reach true healing and move on into the rest of your life free of that pain, you've got to go through it, face it, wade in and see what you find.

So, take a deep breath, open your eyes, and take that first step forward, into the thick of it.

"Survivor Stories: Tips for the Journey and Advice on Thriving After Cancer"

This was one of my favourite episodes to host! As a cancer survivor myself, I believe that Thrivers, like Sarika and Dhara, have so much insight and hope to share with those who are coming up the difficult path behind them. I had such a great time leading a roundtable discussion with them where we all shared about our experiences with cancer, how we got through the toughest challenges, and how we are finding the positives in life after cancer. We also discussed some of the ways that we made it through treatment and the mental and emotional challenges of cancer; anyone who has treatment coming up or who is struggling after their diagnosis will be able to take a lot away from this part of the discussion. We truly hope that you find it helpful and hopeful, and that you enjoy hearing about our journeys as much as we enjoyed sharing them.

Mental Health Monday
When someone we know has a recurrence, that can be so incredibly scary for us because, 1) they are your friend and the possible outcomes of this are terrifying, and 2) it triggers fear and anxiety that the same thing will happen to you, particularly if they had/have the same type of cancer as you.
In this week's MHM vlog, I'm talking about the things that I do when I'm triggered in this way to turn the dial back down on that fear and anxiety so that I can step out of the tornado of unhelpful emotion and focus on supporting the person. I hope you find it both helpful and relatable.
