Just run a BSD distro if you really wish to be secure... ;)

Hear that, might toss net BSD unto the laptop wife is giving me. Possibly dual boot with a Haiku system. Not sure at the moment. Though I'm sure I want try something aside from Debian. Debian is nice and all but it lags a bit to upgrade in general. Then, with NASA using it figure that in part is why.

Nice though down the street today. An old guy actually came up to me as I went into a shop and said "hi how are you going mate" What a good moment. I said "yeah great mate, gonna get hot though this week, you take care" Him, "yeah heard it is, you too". That exchange used to be very very common before covid here in the bush.
Anyone passing another, 7 out of 10 would nod or say hi or g'day. A year on its a welcome exchange and rare. :(
Times are changing huh!

With so much roadway in WV the state runs a Courtesy Patrol. These folks run in a UTE styled pickup truck, white. You break down they come along and help out best they can.

They help fix flats, carry extra Jerry cans of fuel, oil. They carry phones, cb radio. Will offer a lift to a mechanic's shop, fuel station and back. They even been known to get people to a motel/hotel and a meal.

A lot of these folks are volunteers. They don't get anything aside from being helpful out of it. Overall the courtesy patrol leaves WVians generally more open socially. There's times people pay on someone else's grocery bill for example. People stop one another in stores, on the road, just chat away.

Agree though it has been becoming less and less. Hopefully it needn't be much darker before the coming dawn. :)

Really you guys have that there!? Here it was in the bush till about say 8 yrs ago if someone broke down on a road someone stopped within 10 minutes to render assistance some way. Or say a person hitch hiking got a lift within 10 to 20.
I stop and ask if I see a break down and often the person is surprised at it. They might say its ok they have assistance coming like RACV tow help service or a friend but often are thankful or surprised, so its no secret not too many others have offered. I pick up the occasional hiker, iv been around and dont stop for some, you can tell the dodgy types. Now n then you pass and second guess yourself and your judgment just to see them in the rear vision giving you the bird (finger) and obviously cursing you with an agro face. Just cements your first call judgement really.
Have turned back on the odd occasion to be honest. To date I think my judgment calls have all been ok. Will never do it with a passenger though in my car ever unless I know them. Do know a few society drop outs that live in the bush in our area and will always help them out. Bushies we call them. Mostly poor broken souls just wanting to live a peaceful lone life.
But otherwise many others here have gone hard. When I used to pick them up Id say "how long you been walkin mate?" They may have said 15 to 20 minutes, from town to get some things. Now I pick them up much further out of town seeing them walking and the answer is "about an hour".
Id say the general vibe in our town over the past year has got very much darker than it used to be. My misses used to love going down into town on her own every week. About a 25 minute walk from our home on the outskirts. She doesn't want to do so anymore these days. I can't recall the last time she did to be honest.

Morning.
Didn't sleep well, going to be a lazy day. We're supposed to get some snow later today! Don't want it, moved here 26 years ago to get away from that kind of stuff. Anyway, staying home, maybe do some laundry. Jessie likes to burrow into the warm stuff, get fur on the clean stuff.
Stay safe and healthy

Aye we do. And yes, usually in ten minutes, or so a white pickup rolls up on someone broke down. They don't allow hikers on the state Interstate roads. But there's a park n ride stop for car pool folks, hikers to get picked up just off the ramp.

Police run hikers off the on ramps. Hikers though can go on the county roads, get picked up anywhere on them, just not the Interstate roads.

We see folks a lot to and fro. Like you we can spot the dodgy sort. I would be afeared to pick much of anyone up nowadays. If we knew them sure. Maybe during the day for a stranger. Wife will not pick anyone up at night, me in the car or not.

The boss Lady yesterday gave me today's plan.

"Imma stay in bed all day, do nuttin', " she told me.

Asked her what she would do if I asked what I thought. She said I'll be stuck all day because she's not answering. So reckon that'll be today for us. At most she may want to watch some Midsomer Murders on Tubi.

I'll go up feed the cats & fetch down the laundry we did yesterday. Did not have the mods I got ordered come in Friday. She had a lot of parcels from stuff her and her mom ordered for Christmas.

I have to chuckle at her spending money. There was a joke some years back about how guys ought to meanly give a gal $10, turn her lose in a dollar store.

Hell my Lady would come out with $100 worth of good usable stuff giving her $5. It's no offense to her to shop a dollar store, no, it's like giant mall for her.

So yes, I chuckle at her spending money. She's as bad as my little brother code named Grasshopper. You can't get him to stand up off a nickle. He don't spend a cent unless he needs.

But yes, we can at times seem to over spend. We try keeping moderation. Sometimes though it is nice to reward yourself. When we can neither of us feels any real shame in our little treats. As I've said before we don't worry over money.

If you ain't got it, no point worry over what you can't spend. If you do got it no point worry over what cannot be saved, good as gone as soon as got. It's only money to us and to us money isn't exactly life's highest priority, nor are all the "toys". More important to us is being together and enjoying life best we can no matter what.

Not killed one another yet. Figure because we learn each others plans too easily. Eventually I'm building a cone of silence to keep her from learning my plots. Until then reckon I have to keep loving her. :)

Only got about an inch of snow so far. May have gotten lucky! Jessie did enjoy the warm laundry, she tunneled in and snuggled. I put it back in the dryer long enough to get the hairs off. No, she's not spoiled, lol.

Google weather is offering 34°C, which is the best I have seen. Other places are in the 36 or 37 range. And they can shove it.

Dank days...dark, chilly, and rainy. Not abnormal weather...for April...lol...

Did make it out to get a few supplies though for decent prices:

I'd originally bought the same D3 drops from AMZ, then I found out my Rite-Aid carries 'em for $8 and no shipping required. Bought the Vit C, got the D3 for free.

Got the GOOD T.P. too, 12 dbl rolls for $7.

Those bog rolls would be closer to $15 aud here. Good deal

Hopefully quieter than beach

And I will go just prior to dawn. So should be reasonably peaceful. And I might see some critters

Uh huh. Your flirkin is just lulling you into a false sense of security by doing that. Eventually, you'll be made to bow down and feed it anything it desires, treat it respectfully, be at its beck and call. ... Oh wait, never mind. :)

Where as me on the other hand has a little dog. I have to seemingly abuse him for him to hang around. Recall one morning I swung my legs to get out of bed. In so doing I wound up slinging him into a wall. He just got right back in bed, completely loving and trusting.

My wife started to fuss at me but saw my face and realized I felt bad enough. Poor old dog. Then, I also cuddle with him in bed. He curls up like a squirrel and nestles in beside me. We pile the covers on and stay warm. I wake, see him out from under them.

He & my wife make living worth it at times. Though I know I ultimately do that for myself too. Them being in life helps. :)

Nah, that's just the original contract. ;)

I figure , she put up with my using a mini version (but fully loud) of a leaf blower to blow cat detritus and dust out of two computers, plus spending a day working on said computers installing new RAM and etc. And she wasn't allowed anywhere near the exposed entrails of said computers. Which intrigued her to no end...lol...it was a day.

Before..good laird...
Even with AC filters over every inch of all the intake fans, still things get through eventually...dern furballz.

After...

We did alright. Good as new. Now with twice the RAM on the old beast. :)

Chilly day but warm for the season, the wind is howling and it's raining. In January. o_O

Made some nice pour-over coffee...

memes_08-1.jpg

Waiting on some batteries to arrive, and at some point when I'm awake I'll dig in to setting up my new-to-me router. Picked it up in pristine condition for half of retail price. Very excited about that, it's beautiful. ?

It's like something from Star Wars...hehe.

asus_rtac1900p_product.jpg

Mine does have all the blinding blue function LEDs on the front, but has a switch to turn them off entirely. You'd be amazed how bright those damn things can be at night... 0_o

Well, did the carpet sweeper routine on the living room, hall and kitchen, did a LOT of reading up on this router model, then got things organized to do initial setup and testing of the router...and Milly ain't gonna let me.

All of the Cat5 Cables, the antennas, various devices and a laptop laying around are just too much for her to resist. I'll do it when she's asleep. :p

Wanted to walk to the dollar tree for a couple of things, but it's icky out and will be dark in an hour. Hmm.

I ended up going anyways, need to get outa the Apt or I get stir crazy, then Milly gets crazy in general. :giggle:

Went for three things, one they were out of...ended up browsing and finding some things for the cupboard and general nomz. LOVE that Pepperjack cheese.

$22 in foodstuffs + a few bucks for non-foods. :)

TwNPgbd.jpg

I accidentally dropped my dang martini glass in the sink.
So I got another..made in the USA too. :)

Milly got a new backup food plate so I don't have to wash/scrub/chisel hers every morning before feeding her.

Yeah, the food looks gross, it's good for kitties though. ;)

Milly is losing her mind....sounds like a jet plane is outside with lots of thudding noises, but it's the wind.
We got like 35-40mph steady winds with gusts up to at least 50 maybe more.

IMG_20210113_063320.jpg

Pretty much everything is blowing around and it's shaking the building. I don't mind it that much, there are winds up to 70mph over in Idaho...and with flood warnings from meltoff too.

Lots of falling trees and power cables already this morning...oh well...I got lots of mods, the roof on this building is new, and the phone and lappy are charged up. At least it's above freezing.

Glad I went to the store yesterday though.... ;)

Update: still blowing here, one person dead so far from a huge tree falling on her car.

There's huge trees all over the city, both pines and regular. Fortunately the one that hangs over this street's powerline is deciduous and has no leaf mass to blow on since it's 'winter'. Plus, they put up a brand new bigger power pole recently and raised the wires so the tree can't hit them..hopefully.

It's gonna be a long day...

Nothing going on here. No appointments, no plans. Might do some laundry if I get motivated. Jessie is on the deck, guarding Hubby who is in the shop. She'll let me know if he gets into trouble, lol. Good watch-cat.

Nothing much going on here either. Hubbs is picking up a Walmart order later today.

Covid is making itself felt among my coworkers - there are about 10 peripheral cases affecting either employees or their family members, and we lost one of our people a few weeks back.

I am working from home, still, and for the foreseeable future. No word yet on any vaccines that may become available in my area, but even when they are ready, I'm not sure how I will manage the logistics of it. I cannot go stand in line for a vaccine - it's a physical impossibility.

I hope everyone here is staying safe and well.

Seems to have quieted down a bit finally, whew!

I did find out something doing prep for possible power outages though: I don't have a dang cap/cup for my Stanley 2-qt thermos. Ack!!

Turns out, finding one that doesn't cost as much as an entire new thermos is crazy-making. eBay and Amz both want ridiculous prices and the company that makes them now don't have that crucial part for replacement.

But, I found one from a small distributor in PA for a decent price. :)

Chuck picked up a large order Monday and a large one today. Damn, they were out of 17 items for today's order. I wish they kept their online inventory up to date or at least tell you within 2hrs if they're out of stock. Do you know when they typically restock?

Hi, did you try contacting them at Stanley? I lost the seal on mine last year. I couldnt find one so contacted them. They arranged for the distributor here to send me a new seal with even an etire new top section for free. I thought that was amazing service seeing as it was a 10 yr old thermos.

That is the question of the decade.

I have ordered items online, been told they were out of stock, and had my husband go into the store and SEE the item on the shelf. I've decided they just give us what they want us to have.

I see Walmart trucks in town at all different times. They have distribution centers everywhere, so I think they restock whenever a truck rolls up to a door. The store here probably processes 10 or 12 trucks a week at a minimum, and as Walmarts go, it's a small one.

They do such a shitty job at replenishment - people must be stealing them blind. That's normally the main cause of automated inventory getting out of kilter.

I thought about signing up for Walmart+ for $98 a year. Free food delivery and gas perks. But for as often we I order stuff and backup food I'm thinking I may just do that. With that said, I think perhaps they fill orders for paying members first. Even so like you said, there is stuff on the shelf so maybe they divy up stock for walk-ins, pickups and delivery.

They will be implementing "Smart Freezers or Smart Boxes" to place in front of grocery shoppers homes. It has a section for freezer food, another for fridge food and another for pantry items at no charge. Test will be done wherever their corporate office is. I wonder how that will go over with homeowners that really don't want a large freezer sitting by their front door.

I'm sorry to hear about your co-workers. I'm glad you & hubs are home and safe!

The thing is, I got this one at the discount store for like $15, it's the new Stanley. Made in China now. <bleh>
The pre-2002 is a different beasty.

I don't like that much, but for the price...it works well. I haven't been in the woods or used one on a job in about 30yrs, I just want to keep coffee warm and it does. :)

Note to self: never buy a new router ever again...lolz....

Nah, it's wasn't really THAT bad to upgrade, but compared to my old one this fucker is like the Space Shuttle: sooooo many thingamabobs and WTH_Does_That_Do things going on. o_O

Spent like an hour just turning default shit off or editing stuff...but it's humming along now.
It's faaast though and passed every GRC test once configured, so I'm ok with that for now.

Sites like VU, ESPN, etc. actually are loading better now, streaming loads instantly (ditching Adobe Flash permanently helps too), and my ping went down to 6ms. I'm happy.

This router is more powerful than the old living room PC was...how sick is THAT? Muahahaha.

And, the 5ghz Wi-Fi band for my phone finally works right. It used to fallback to 2.4ghz half the time before.
A huge difference for LAN file transfers. ;)

This baby is literally twice the router the olde one was....w00t!

Damn, must not have a loss prevention budget worth a damn then.

Their HQ would be in AZ. Figure stupidity like this is where the loss prevention budget goes. How are they going to secure paying customers food they deliver to these "smart boxes"?

Don't they figure that will further promote theft? Ah, right well that's on the customer, hey?

*chuckling* "Push all the buttonz!" :)

My day. As read, it was kind of one of those days you think "living is killing me". Not depressed atm, but feeling like I took a shotgun blast to the chest. Still numb.

Wife had me choose healthier supper this evening. Had a turkey style sandwich. That was healthier than my normal three pack of sliders. Might return to a navy style diet of protein and good fats. Of course, I'll have all the veggies I can stuff in too. Lots of salads I'm sure. You can get protein from plants. Will still have some leaner/cleaner meats though.

Got up and walked in place for about fifteen minutes today. I was looking at some AC/DC videos and just keeping pace. Nothing fancy, low impact get the heart pumping. Will keep at it and keep adding time. Need to get myself back to right. Would love to drop 100lbs, will settle for 10 currently. After that keep taking it off as it comes off.

Stay that course until I get back to right. Keep on it because I see now what happens if I don't. "No, wheedle boy don't trust wheedle girl when she say here eat this. She trying to make you too big."

Was a nice day here. Was supoosed to be 27c which is nice but with 35kph winds.
Only got to 24c and 15kph winds. Went and saw a friend I have not seen in 5 yrs. Was a 240 kilometres round trip but was great to catch up. With no doubt the best honest person I've ever known. After visiting me and the misses hoped to have a fish at the big lake not far from him. But it was pretty low water wise and everywhere we went to fish people were swimming of canoeing or jet skiing. But its holiday time and many I guess were enjoying the get away from our Aussie Victoria lockdown from Covid so we just sat and looked having a snack and drink.
As you see the lake is way down. Think just 40%. Called Lake Eppalock.
Those little scraggly sapplings near that Y shaped branch.....thats where the proper water level would be at 100%. And those shrubs way beyond show how long its been since it was properly full.
Still was a great day. 20210114_121442(1).jpg

I was born in the tropical beach state of Florida. Have lived in the wooded mountain states of Virginia, West Virginia most of my life. Love the lush green I live in even despite all the allergens from trees, weeds.

Have to say, y'all have some pretty country. The starkness of it highlights all contrasts. Easy to see how you come over so many gone missing. Likely people go out to amble round, fall in love and forget the way back.

Know that happens round these parts a fair bit as well.

Hi yes it happens often. We do have some beautiful places. The landscape can look so different within an hour or two drive where I live. Plains, ranges, valleys. But to be honest, those of us who live here know that you can walk within a few hours, noting the sun, and end up with help. Its the city people who have no sense of direction that get lost in my state. And even then, why not just carry as I do in case I have a mishap and cannot walk, a walkers whistle. The one I have, never used and hope never to, is so loud you have to put something in your ears when you blow it. Its mad loud and can be heard for miles/ks easy. But so often on the news I hear "walker lost, nearly died, very experienced but was just saved and the rescue crew found them within 5ks of where they went missing!"
Guess what! The so called experienced bush mountain trecker/walker is never reported as being found by a walker emergency whistle.
Mmmmm......experienced hey......years of bush craft.....BS!
To me they are idiots with zero bush craft experience and just dimwits going to places with no idea and wasting the time of emergency services.
Fair enough novice walkers, but dont tell me they are experienced going with 1 litre of water and no whistle and no tiny fold up in your pocket space blanket and reflective mirror. I have all those all the time just detecting!
They are ....... ........ ....... utter Dimwits!
That's being kind too.

*chuckles* Reminds me of an Uncle Oscar joke. These are jokes our high school football coach would tell. If you got in school suspension you could get "Naggy" to crack 'em off all day.

One day city slicking nephew came to visit Uncle Oscar. He had in mind going hunting with Uncle Oscar to earn some respect.

Uncle Oscar told him they could go out through the pasture to stir up some rabbit. They get to walking along, "Ya see that?!" The nephew hadn't seen a thing. "You missed two rabbits humping," Uncle Oscar told him.

On the way again, Uncle Oscar hollers out "See it!?" Poor nephew thought he saw something but realized he didn't. "You missed a rabbit stopped out in front of us," says Uncle Oscar.

By now nephew is getting frustrated being hollered at. He takes it in his mind he's gonna say he did see it. Directly, Uncle Oscar hollers "Hey, you see it?"

"Yes, I saw it," nephew hollers back.

Uncle Oscar shakes his head "why did you step in bullsh*t then?"

Knowing myself, would probably take the kit you suggest. I would probably though wind up finding someone indigenous. I'm sure they would get a crazy fool back to crazy fool land, but I might at least enjoy some good eats first. :)

:giggle: I. Think I would like your Uncle Oscar. That's a good one.

Years back I went camping and shooting, with a couple of friends. Roo and Fox shooting.
In the 70's. We were young. Stayed in the bush for a couple of weeks on school holidays.
Shot stuff and ate it, as well as stuff we took. One friend, no idea as he was bush dumb, said to me and my mate Danny when we had been hunting and walking for a few hours "this is the way back to camp!" Me and Danny laughed and said "yeah ok, walk in the opposite direction idiot". He did. Me and Danny knew how stupid he was and knew he would probably realise then backtrack and come back on the Roo track, Kangaroo track, leading back from where he left us. We waited 2 hrs. Then we saw him looking all lost coming towards us. Ok, we were young and dumb but we did unload our guns in the opposite direction into the ground. About, between us 10 rounds. Danny his 12 g shotgun with solid slugs and me an Ex Mil rifle, 6.5.
Our mate screamed like a girl. Seriously, high pitch, like a little girl! Me and Danny were in hysterics for ages. Ok, ill admit now it was a bad joke. But then.......:giggle:
He never went hunting with us again.

I'm sure they have plenty of loss prevention money. Also sure that you can't be everywhere at once, and that some people are very, very sly.

Walmart's headquarters has always been in Arkansas, Bentonville, to be precise.

Figures that they would try to move quickly, expanding into Smart Boxes and such before they even get good at filling online orders. They are on the "bleeding edge," no doubt about it.

Ah, goober me always get AR & AZ mixed up. No idea why either, not meant as an offense to either. I just confuse them. Unlike NM & LA.

Agree with you on people being sly. I once walked into a dept store's security guy w/ a half dozen items. Asked to see if his cameras or security caught me. They had not. I was working there at the time. He immediately told me, "you're extra eyes" Watched a few try getting by. There were a couple we let walk, the police dealt with those.

Morning.
It's going to be a slow day. Finish off the laundry, maybe dust & vac. Catch up on my book.
Jessie is waiting for the deck to warm up a bit more so she can go patrol. Gotta watch out for those dangerous bugs and flying critters, lol.
Stay safe and healthy

We're fine here, didn't lose power like about 30,000 other people. SSDD basically.

VU is just too slow to even use recently. And it seem Imgur pics are getting gobbled up by the proxy system here and I don't have the patience to deal with it.

Built a VICE RDA I've never used before, testing out my new Molicel 18650s in my old Kamagong wood beast mod, and suffering with only sub-top-25 NCAAB to watch: Marshall vs Western Kentucky.

Then...I got Wanda-Vision. :D

Seen a few previews for that. Debating, ...

It will be one of the first, if not first wholly created mostly by Disney "Marvel" shows. Yes, I know Disney had a hand in Agents of Shield. AOS though was still mostly Marvel itself with back end creative control. So, that's my debate. I do and don't want to see it.

As far as I'm aware Marvel never really touched upon "home" life with Wanda & Vision. It was glossed over they were married, lived together. It was never expounded on further iircc. Then, Mystique being mother to Nightcrawler wasn't really expounded on much either. Nor was Mystique being foster mother to Rouge with Mystique's partner Destiny.

Marvel would skirt such issues and let readers fill in the blanks. It left many readers feeling empowered because Marvel "trusted" us to remember Stan the Man's motto, "with great power comes great responsibility". Marvel saw the writing on the wall that LGBQT was going to become mainstream. It didn't encourage or discourage yet didn't shy away either.

In that manner, Marvel set a very clear tone culturally, socially. Their artists were given reign to voice a broad view of humanity so long as it was kept real. Granted there were/are a few times it seemed Marvel carried a "party line". These cases though also then later explored themselves, didn't take themselves too seriously.

My concern is Disney will quash all that creative freedom.
