Height Influences Disease Risk

If you're taller than average, your genes may affect your risk for a variety of diseases, a new study suggests.

These include a higher risk for the heart rhythm disorder atrial fibrillation and varicose veins, but a lower risk of coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

This study found new links between being tall and a higher risk for nerve damage leading to peripheral neuropathy, as well as skin and bone infections, such as leg and foot ulcers.

But just because you're tall doesn't mean that you're destined to develop one of these conditions, said lead researcher Sridharan Raghavan, M.D., assistant professor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Denver.

For the study, Raghavan's team collected data on more than 250,000 participants in the U.S. Veterans Affairs Million Veteran Program, looking at more than 1,000 traits and conditions among them. The data included more than 200,000 white adults and more than 50,000 Black adults.

"This is really a starting point for future work, first, for considering whether height can help identify individuals at risk for specific conditions and guide preventive measures targeting modifiable risk factors for those conditions, and second, for understanding the biological mechanisms tying height to clinical conditions," Raghavan said, noting that those mechanisms are likely to differ for various medical conditions and the new study may provide direction for future research.

Raghavan said most conditions arise from a combination of factors. And while people can't change their genetics, many studies have shown that healthy behaviors, which people can control and modify, can be protective.

Happy Saturday, my fellow healthy living maniac.

Even though it's the weekend, I need to get things done before leaving next Wednesday on Spring Break with my family for Florida:)

One of those 'things' is getting everything ready for my Spine + Posture Health Connection Summit which releases next Friday, March 24!

Speaking of the "spine," last week I mentioned using spinal remolding blocks for 15 to 20 minutes every night.

There were a plethora of people asking about these blocks, where to get them, and how to use 'em.

And I learned awhile ago that for every 1 person who asks, there's at least 7 more who are wondering, but don't ask.

In a nutshell, spinal molding blocks are recommended and prescribed based on a person's specific spinal structural needs.

The most accurate way to determine your needs are through standing full spine x-rays. (This is analogous to getting lab work done to determine your individual nutrient, mineral, or vitamin needs. And then prescribing nutrients, minerals, or vitamins based on the lab results.)

Here's the process using me as an example:
1) I have standing full spine x-rays taken.
2) My wife (who's also a corrective chiropractor) and I analyze the x-rays comparing my spine to normal/ideal.
3) Based on my spinal structure, we determine which blocks are needed and where to place them.

This is the same process we use for patients in our office.

Again, this is THE most accurate way to find out which specific spinal molding blocks you would need, and where to correctly place them for maximum health benefit.

Now, there are general spinal molding tools you can incorporate, such as rolled up towels.

For example, tightly roll a bath towel and place it under the base of your low back. Then, roll a smaller towel and place it under the top of your shoulders so your head/neck extends back.

You can start at as little as 3 minutes and work your way up to 15 to 20 minutes lying on the towels.

**Remember, I don't know your specific issues or spinal structure so these are GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS. If you have a chronic spinal condition especially osteoporosis, tread very carefully.

Thank you for caring there shouldn't be all those poisons. IMO I'd rather have a veggie or fruit with a bug bite than all that poison.

Odors and Nasal Sprays Directly Affect the Brain
Dr. Russell Blaylock, M.D., writes:

God gave human beings the ability to smell not just so that we could enjoy the fragrance of fresh flowers or the scent of freshly baked bread, but also as a warning system against harmful chemicals and fires, and the presence of decay.

Our knowledge of the neuroanatomy and physiology of smell has expanded greatly in recent years. It is now known that the smell (olfactory) nerves within the nasal cavity connect to neurons that can enter the brain at the site of memory generation, behavioral elaboration, and endocrine regulation (the hippocampus). From there, the neurons connect to critical areas in the prefrontal cortex that control higher brain functions such as thinking, social control, behavior, and executive brain function. These are the parts of the brain first affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

Normally, the brain protects itself from unwelcome substances in the bloodstream by means of a sort of filter called the blood-brain barrier. But this barrier is inadequate in the olfactory tracts, thus allowing things we smell to directly enter the brain.

Studies have shown that many substances can enter the brain by this route, including:

• Toxic metals
• Pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides
• Many pharmaceutical drugs
• Engine exhaust particles
• Aerosolized chemicals

The first changes we see in cases of Alzheimer’s occur at the entry point of the olfactory tract into the brain — which is called the entorhinal cortex. Mercury and aluminum can easily enter the brain by this route.

Studies have shown that the highest level of aluminum in a brain with Alzheimer’s occurs in this area. And aluminum is very toxic to the brain.

Because so many chemicals can enter the brain via this route, pharmaceutical companies have begun experimenting with developing nasal sprays that contain drugs used to treat brain disorders. For example, an insulin spray allows insulin direct access to the hippocampus. Studies on animal models of Alzheimer’s suggest that insulin nasal sprays can reverse many of the pathological and behavioral features of Alzheimer’s, including neuritic plaques and memory loss.

Spraying insulin into the nose can also prevent the severe drop in blood sugar that occurs when giving insulin by injection.

Because of this direct link between what we smell and the brain, people have to be very careful when breathing toxic compounds and working in enclosed areas with toxic fumes. You should also be cautious about medications delivered as nasal sprays, including nasal decongestants and anti-allergy sprays.

In addition, some saline sprays may contain harmful compounds. If you use a nasal saline spray, make sure it contains only saline.

Jogging, walking, or biking along the side of a roadway — especially if it is heavily traveled — is also hazardous. Studies have shown that inhaled micro- and nanoparticles from the exhaust fumes of automobiles can cause prolonged brain inflammation and lead to neurodegenerative damage.

I have also seen joggers and cyclists going through clouds of pesticides being sprayed by government authorities. This allows high concentrations of these brain-damaging chemicals to enter the most vulnerable parts of the brain.
High-resolution air filters are a good idea for the home. But you should avoid ionizers.

Think of inflammation as something that fills up a bucket. Yes, your body can neutralize some of it on its own but when there are too many inflammatory triggers, the bucket gets full and spills over. The spill is the allergic reaction you’re experiencing.​

Why not just take an antihistamine and go on with my life?
Here are a few reasons why I don’t recommend antihistamines on a regular, long-term basis:
🚫 Regular intake of antihistamines can lead to tolerance and dependence
🚫 Can cause side effects: drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, and dry mouth are common
🚫 Long-term use can affect the kidneys, liver, and heart
🚫 Overuse of antihistamines can lead to rebound effects, such as increased allergy symptoms when the medication wears off
🚫 It does not address the root cause of why your body is overproducing histamines​

Make it a point to reduce your allergies, starting this spring​

As we will soon be entering the allergy season, I thought it might be helpful to show you how inflammation can play a role in making your allergies worse - making your hormones even more vulnerable to going astray.​

The Inflammation - Liver - Allergies - Hormonal connection
The liver plays an important role in allergies because it is responsible for processing and filtering potentially allergenic substances from the bloodstream.
When you come into contact with an allergen, such as pollen or certain foods, your immune system reacts by producing antibodies that trigger the release of histamine and other chemicals. These chemicals cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as itching, swelling, and inflammation.
The liver helps to break down these allergenic substances and remove them from the body. However, if the liver is not functioning properly or is overburdened, it may not be able to process these substances efficiently, leading to an increase in allergic reactions.​

What can help (long-term and quick fixes)

There are several things you can do - some will take time to kick in (and create long-lasting results) and a few others can produce quick anti-allergenic results (without the side effects of antihistamines).

Takes time to reduce inflammation and allergies​

  • Diet - consider doing an anti-inflammatory diet and removing all the well-documented allergens (gluten, dairy, soy, corn, eggs, excessive sugar). Both of my cookbooks can be great starting points; Overcoming Estrogen Dominance and Cooking for Hormone Balance.
  • Liver health - we extensively covered liver health a month ago; the formula that can help the liver’s overburden is our Daily Liver Detox (contains NAC, milk thistle, ALA, and selenium).

Can produce quick results​

  • Curcumin (the active compound found in turmeric) is a well-documented root that can help lower inflammation and support liver function.
