How perfectionism, self-criticism, or "type A" behavior can block your detox |
Do you feel an unrelenting internal pressure to perform, catch up, get things done, get ahead, get better, or do better? Are you perfectionistic and/or self-critical? Has anybody ever told you that you have a "type A" personality (even if you don't agree)? If so, there's a chance that your nervous system is not often able to relax enough to fully support detoxification processes. The limbic brain and the polyvagal system are parts of your nervous system that constantly monitor and respond to signs of danger. If these parts of the nervous system sense danger, they direct the body to avoid the danger via responses that can range from "fight, flight, or freeze" responses of the Sympathetic nervous system to polyvagal "shutdown". By the way, polyvagal shutdown is often referred to as a "freeze" state, but there is also a Sympathetic system "freeze" state, so it probably makes more sense to use "shutdown" for the polyvagal system version of freeze. All of these situations deactivate processes in the body that are not essential to avoiding the danger, including detoxification. These danger-monitoring parts of the nervous system can be hypervigilant and therefore easily and repeatedly triggered. Or these parts of the nervous system can be perpetually stuck in a perception of imminent danger. Past "big T" psychological trauma is often the cause of these situations. But other factors can also trigger similar nervous system responses. For example, frequent self-criticism and the internal self-attack that often goes along with it can be experienced by the nervous system as a threat to survival that initiates a Sympathetic or polyvagal system response that shuts down "peace time" physiological processes like detoxification. Feeling inadequate or worthless and/or needing to prove or redeem yourself can cause the same kind of nervous system responses. It can also promote a constant drive to engage in "getting things done" activity even when you're exhausted and should rest. One way this shows up is trying to complete tasks late at night when it would be far more efficient to just go to bed early and start fresh early the next morning. All of this blocks your detox. So an important part of preparing yourself for effective detoxification is becoming aware of patterns like these. Once you become aware, you can employ short-term methods to counteract these threat-mimicking, danger-signaling behaviors until you heal the underlying psychological drivers and create new psychological habits. Many methods can help you shift away from perfectionism, self-criticism, and type A behavior toward more self-acceptance, self-love, and internal peace. If you attended the recent "Unblock Your Healing Process" challenge, then you learned about using the QCI vial to clear mental blocks. The QCI vial can also be used to shift perfectionism, self-criticism, and type A behavior by creating "alignment statements" with which you use the QCI vial. For example: "I love and accept myself as I am." "It is safe to complete tasks at a pace and time that are healthy for me." |
