I have kind of an embarrassing mixing question. By way of background I'll admit that even after months of doing this I still scribble and use a regular calculator to convert percentages rather than use a juice calculator. For this reason, the fewer calculations I have to do, the better. If I use a 10ml bottle, I fill it with 9mls of base; when I use a fifteen, I fill it with 12 or 14mls of base (depending on whether I'm using more or less concentrated flavors, to leave room for flavoring. But I generally measure and add flavor based on the bottle size rather than the actual mls in the bottle. My end result is a little less than the full number of mls the bottle is meant to hold in nearly every case, and I try to make up for the tendency to over-flavor with this method by being "scant" in my measurements.
My question is: do you guys do something similar, and if so, which amount do you flavor based on--the bottle-size amount or the actual number of mls in the bottle?
Or do you figure it all out exactly so that the flavor + base actually comes to exactly 10 or 15 (or whatever) mls?
(I don't know why I'm so resistant to the juice calculator, I just am.. and because I'm always making small batches, it has yet to be a big issue).
It seems to me that whatever method you use is your choice as long as it is repeatable. With your method it might be a little hard to pass the recipe on to others though. This applies to flavors only, not the nicotine.
I use an e-liquid calculator, add my flavors first and then add the base to make the exact amount I planned to.

btw, Vaping MamaJ's Cherry Pie for the first time RIGHT NOW and it is pure happiness...fluffy, fruity, tart and sweet...so beautifully balanced.
Thanks for reminding me. I bought a bottle of MamaJ's Cherry Pie and then got busy at work and forgot about it. I'll try it today.

Well I ordered some VT nic & a couple of HIC's wonderful recipes....now it's a waiting game....I really want to try out the new recipes but according to you expert mixologists, I won't get the vape heaven effect unless I mix it with the grand poobah of nicotine that is VT....so I'll wait.
dagnabit.
And now that I've read up on it, I can now taste a hint of dirty sock in my WL nicotine.
But that could just be all in my head.

Or the fact that I'm using dirty sock as a wick.
:D

So, when you top off the flavors with base into a 10ml bottle, you add whatever amount will end you up with total 10mls - an amount you've figured out using the calculator?
Yep. Figure out how much of each flavor in 10ml, measure and dump them in, then simply top off with pre-diluted base.

I've been playing with German Choc Cake (yikes, 9 flavors! ). With that one, I decided to follow HIC's tip of mixing a larger amount into a separate bottle (1%=1ml, 0.5%=0.5ml, ...) and using that as flavoring at 6% (total flavor = 6%). Measuring out 0.05ml to go into a 10ml mix would've been insane!

Whooo, hold up there a minute @HeadInClouds, wth? I heard the words, FDA, nicotine, stock up, HOARD! What's going on? Oh, and on a lighter note, of course us women prefer the pricier stuff, duh! That's why men only have one wife nowadays.
I think having two wifes is were certain sayings originated....oh like "caught between a rock and a hard place." or "out of the frying pan and into the fire." I could be wrong but it sounds about right. I have a hard enough time just staying ahead of my wife and keeping her happy :p

I wish my husband had two wives right now . . . he came home yesterday from having hip surgery and I'm already exhausted. The only thing that saved my sanity at the hospital was being able to stealth vape . . . a lot. It was like a gift from the vape gods to find they had really fruity air freshener in the restrooms :D

You know, it's worthwhile to mix a few recipes with your current nic as well as VT (or any new-to-you nic) - so you can compare the results and see if the nic is worth the additional cost to you. It didn't take me many experiments to decide, but I'm glad I took the time for the ones I did.

Are those rayon socks or sun-bleached organic cotton? <snicker>

Haha! I am laughing so hard imagining a line of men with tampons checking out at the store.
Yes I am going to use this excuse next time I am asked to go into the store to get feminine products, "I am just going to vape with this stuff". After seeing it in writing maybe I will just tell the truth or say nothing. I would not trust them for a source of wiching to big of chance of something else added that I do not want to inhale.

Nor would I, but the things I get out of posts and the thoughts that run through my head keeps me thoroughly entertained.

OK, so I'm getting ready to jump in to DIY REAL soon, and I'm curious as wo what "must have" flavors there are? Specifically tobaccos, but I'm also going to toy with some fruits, spices and herbal flavors. I know everyone's tastes are different, but I'm trying to get a general idea of what to get.

-Kingboomer

P.S. Now I've got one hell of a sweet tooth!

Oh, boy. Now everyone is different, but knowing what I do now, I'd pic these ten flavors.

FA:

Vienna Cream
Cookie
Vanilla Classic
Bilberry
Fuji Apple
Lemon Sicily
Cigar Passion
Maxx Blend
Cuban Supreme
Jamaican Rum

There are so many others that you will need. If you plan on really getting into it, perhaps you should talk to MamaJ's and see if you could get a deal on a purchase of the complete line of Flavour Arts that they offer in 5ml. I don't know if they do that, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

TFA: There are at least two flavors from TFA that are a must

Brown Sugar
RY4 Double.

That should get you up and running with a variety of tobacco vapes for around $30.

Have Fun.

I could easily do that with the tribeca clone I've fallen in love with. I keep a bottle steeping in the desk drawer while vaping another....lol!

RY4 Double was the flavor that convinced me that DIYing was even doable. With the flavors above, Kingboomer should be able to make a passable similar clone. He might also need Acetyl Pyrazine, depending on his tastes.

I asked that same question when I first started DIY, then ended up with a bunch of flavors I hardly ever used, while needing a bunch of others I didn't have. What worked for me was to initially pick some recipes and order stuff for those. From that, I started coming up with flavors that I never wanted to be out of, and I know that list won't match anybody else's, so won't even go there. :D

Oh dear, let's not go there....lol! My massive collection has stemmed from recipes "just to try" that still need to be made, tried and trues that are regularly made but I've overstocked, flavors that sounded "interesting", and have been arranged alphabetically, cross filed, categorized, etc.
I am obsessed. :D

My advice, for what it's worth, you ain't gonna know what you like till you try it. I'd buy small flavor samples to begin with. Wllmc has 3 ml. Samples for $1.50 of fa at mamajsjuice.com . You can pm him. He may sell you samples of other than fa that he has for you to try. $20 free shipping. No better way to try it out. As for other flavors...ah shit just pm Wllmc first...then maybe check out wizard labs/bull city/ecig express. Sold on vaporstek nicotine. Never tried any other, no need to, very satisfied. As for tobacco flavors @downInTn comes to my mind to ask.

^^What Daintanee just said about sample sizes and where to buy. 99% of my FA flavors are sample sizes, simply because I'm only mixing for myself and they last me a long time. How much juice you plan to mix and how fast you can vape it is definitely a consideration.

I agree with Cindy above! Look around the recipe thread, pick some out that sound good to you, go to mama'sjuice.com and but the samples. This will save you money and frustration ;) We all have different likes, taste things differently depending on how recovered our taste buds are. We want to keep you around!

What you say Smokachino is right. I essentially mix only for myself and I have a lot of 10ml bottles of flavoring that will begin to pass the 1 year mark in a couple of months. I hate to think about them going bad losing their oomph. I've recently cut back to sample sizes for most of my orders.

Oh, I almost forgot. wllmc's Cherry Pie is as delicious as you guys said it was. I highly recommend it.

Must have FA Tobaccos for me are Cuban Supreme, Burley, Virginia and Maxx Blend for starters. Then there is Dark Vapure, Cowboy, Perique and Desert Ship that I wouldn't be without.

My best advice is to go with small flavor amounts to start - that way you are not stuck with too much of a flavor that doesn't work for you. I learned the hard way with my AP aka acetyl pyrazine issue.:D

I don't know much about the FA tobaccos as I'm still using up other tobaccos before I purchase the FA ones.
However I'd say be careful with Latakia.
Find I have to use this in very low percentages and it needs to steep a lot.

Supporting flavours for tobacco I can help with though : caramel, vanilla classic (any could work though), oakwood, fuji and strawberry. Have also plaued around with nuts to some success in a tobacco mix.

Would dearly love to be able to mix Port Royal tobacco but don't think I'd get the rum and wine balance right.

Wow, thanks everyone for the input! Being a HUGE Turkish tobacco fan Desert Ship's definitely one I'm starting with, and most of the other tobaccos they offer look good too. I'm definitely gonna be picking up some creams and fruits as well to play around with. I'm ALSO (hehehe) looking at HIC's sore throat mix to have on hand, the plus being those flavors seem to play well with fruits. Looks like I've got some narrowing down to do :D

I have been playing around with FA flavorings, and have been reading alot of cautions on this thread that less is more...to use the flavorings sparingly in order to get them to pop. There seems to be some truth to this I've found.....but the subtlety of the flavor makes it seem as if these flavorings work much better in a genny than they would in a dtipper.

Wow that's a hard one....it's like saying which foods are a must have....for some people it's american,french,german....for other's it's Italian,Indian,ethiopian.......and then of course there are those two people who like english food.

as far as what to get.. depends on your budget.. I have all of the fa line..

They work in everything! You'll just adjust flavoring levels to your own tastes as usual. These are just more concentrated than, say, TFA or Capella, which is why you start at a lower percentage.

In addition to HIC's VG TH/reg nic review, after doing a side by side comparison with and without flavors, I think the TH VG nic is much smoother than the TH nic in PG.
