My Fresno peppers are kickin' ass (loaded already and they are still small plants) So...
I may end up with many of them being harvested in a short time. What is a good way to keep them (of course a few will keep in the fridge)? Dried, frozen or otherwise?

Good question, if they are hot you can dry them or freeze them but in the freezer when you take them out to use them they are softer than fresh, or pickle them.
Sweet peppers you can freeze or pickle, we freeze for cookin later.
I take capsules of hot peppers every day, great for you body and circulation so I dry, grind, and cap up most of my hot peppers. Rabbits ate on those too. :(

Are you ready to take your irrigation to the next level?

Wicking beds are amazing. Many urban growers I know, as soon as they learn about wicking beds, they become so excited that they start building one right away.

So what exactly is it?

It’s a garden bed with lining to hold water at the bottom. Water is drawn upward to the surface like a wick. Wicking beds are a water-efficient, self-watering way to irrigate your crops.

They are ideal for people with limited strength or mobility because you don’t have to carry heavy water containers. Plus, you can build the be to be a comfortable height so you don’t have to stoop down. That’s a win in my book!

My good friend Ray wrote a series on his experience with wicking beds (plus how to build one). Check it out and prepare yourself to get seriously stoked on this idea.

Healthy Food Means Healthy Soil
Is healthy food truly healthy if the soil is depleted?

We’re losing quality soil.
Here’s what that means…
— Food that doesn’t taste as good
— An increase in diseases as our soil is stripped of vital nutrients
— Skyrocketing food prices
— And eventually, if we continue on this path, no food
But there is hope, and that’s exactly what the inspiring film, The Need To GROW, is about.
>> This week, for a very limited time, you can watch The Need To GROW for free.
This moving documentary has won over a dozen awards at film festivals, including Winner of the Best Documentary, Audience Favorite, and Best Environmental Film

Hi Jimi,

I'm sure you've noticed: Egg prices have risen about 40% because so many hens have been killed due to the avian flu outbreak ... and prices are expected to stay high for the foreseeable future.

Seems like a good time to be producing your own food, right?

That's why I wanted to let you know about my new f-r-e-e webinar, which teaches you how to take that next step on the path to self-reliance:

This is for people who want the fastest and easiest ways to produce healthy and delicious meat, eggs, and vegetables.

In this educational webinar, I cover:

  • The current status of the global food supply
  • How much land you need
  • The easiest and fastest foods to produce
  • A full plan to be able to produce all your own food
  • How to get started today

Hi Jim,

Some people call it "dirt." But the truth is, that soil is the foundation of life.

And because of modern industrialized farming practices, the world’s soils are in trouble.

So unless we do something now, some experts estimate that we’ll run out of healthy soil within a few short decades.

But there is hope, and that’s exactly what the film, The Need To GROW, is about…

And today, you can catch The Need To GROW at no cost.

This documentary has won over a dozen awards, including Winner of the Best Documentary in the Sonoma International Film Festival, Audience Favorite in the Philadelphia Environmental Film Festival, Best Environmental Film in the Sedona Film Festival, and more.

"No human being should miss this film." —Society of Voice Arts and Sciences
"Perhaps the best film on sustainability I have ever seen." —Terry Grouya, founding director of the American Documentary Film Festival
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by what’s going on with the environment and the status quo, The Need To GROW is a story of hope and solutions.

When you watch the film, you’ll discover how we can grow 100% organic food at warp speed using new technology that can do in 4 days what would take nature 400 years.

Narrated and produced by activist and actress Rosario Dawson (as seen in Wonder Woman, Rent, The Lego Batman Movie, and other blockbusters), this film will show you what you can do to save yourself, your loved ones, and your community from a world where food is literally impossible to grow.

This film rocked the independent film circuits when it came out, and this week you can stream it for free.

Go here to watch The Need To GROW.

We promise you’ll be so glad you watched. This film will make you laugh, cry, and leave you more than just hopeful — it’ll inspire you to be part of the solution.

To your health,

Hey Jimi,

If you’ve ever tried growing your own vegetables, you may have learned that it can involve a lot of trial and error.

What worked last year may not work this year, for a variety of reasons, leaving you dumbfounded about what went wrong.

So, here’s a few little-known, but tried and true veggie gardening tips from the experts…

  • When planning out your garden, grab some powdered milk to mark rows and planting spots. That’s because it also adds calcium to the soil which is a required micronutrient for many plants.
  • Growing cucumbers? Plant sunflowers with them as they make an excellent trellis for vining cukes.
  • Try plastic "mulch" or even some aluminum foil as it helps conserve water, warms the soil, deters pests, keeps away the weeds and lasts long! Just make sure to dispose of it properly when it needs to be replaced.
  • Have limited space? Make the most of it by "interplanting", which means sowing quick-growing veggies between slow-growing ones.
  • If you’re worried about pests and critters, grab some old rags or t-shirts and hang strips of fabric on a few posts. It’s usually enough to scare away bunnies and birds.
  • In the dry summer months, know when to water your plants. If the soil on top is dry at least an inch, make sure to give your plants the drink it needs as much as possible.
We’ll have more tips coming your way soon, so for now, enjoy using these in your garden and I’ll see you soon!

Here’s to a bountiful harvest this season,

As it stands, the legal system in the United States now recognizes, at least at the level of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, that Roundup and other glyphosate-containing herbicides and pesticides do, in fact, cause cancer

If there’s anyone out there who knows about water harvesting, it’s Brad Lancaster, author of the award-winning Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond and co-founder of DesertHarvesters.org.
If you’re been growing your own food for any length of time, it’s likely you’ve heard of him.
So for this issue of the Urban Grower’s Guide, it’s only natural that I include his water harvesting wisdom.

Did I miss @SnapDragon NY pics
No I haven't taken pics of my veggie and flower gardens yet- waiting for more daylilies to bloom, hopefully soon and full of buds. Deer like to eat them and hoping they don't eat them all like in the past few years.
Waiting for the veggie plants to grow bigger since I just planted them the end of May.
Soon there will be garden pics, I promise.
