[eGuide] 5 Keys to Invite Beneficials into Your Garden

Face it, gardening has its ups and downs.

Some days, we float through the garden harvesting armfuls of beautiful produce. Our plants have grown since yesterday. New blossoms promise an abundant future. The bees hum a good morning tune, crickets chirp along in harmony, and cute little birds land on our shoulders to sing us a song of encouragement.

mail

Other days, we trudge through the garden doing the dirty, sweaty manual labor. There are holes in the kale and worms in the tomatoes. The zucchini that was so lush last week lays limp on the ground. The only song to be heard is the mosquitos as they swarm our ankles.

When your plants get eaten up by pests, all of your garden work starts feeling like…well, work.

We can all use a partner in the garden–someone who really knows what they’re doing.

Who are you going to call??

Call on Mother Nature! Team up with her, and she’ll do the work for you.

When you partner with nature, incredible things can happen. You can…

❤️ Manage pests with less work by inviting beneficial insects into your garden
💛 Save money on pesticides, herbicides, and amendments
💚 Set up your garden for long-term success and pest protection
💙 Spend less time fighting and more time winning big (big harvests, that is)
💜 Create sustainable garden systems that do the work for you

Creating a sustainable garden starts by partnering with Mother Nature…including her creepy crawlies 🦗

And as your partnership deepens, you’ll find that she’s happy to do a lot of the pest management for you. All you have to do is set up your garden ecosystem to be an inviting home for beneficial insects.

That’s why Crystal Meserole created a FREE guide to inviting beneficial insects into your garden!

>>> Download 5 Keys to Invite Beneficials into Your Garden here!

Inside, you’ll learn how to:

🕷️ Adopt a pest management mindset of sustainability and balance
🐛 Use “trap crops” to draw pests away from your garden
🐜 Introduce beneficial insects into your garden–and keep them there!
🐝 Include flowers and perennial herbs in your garden plan for natural pest protection
🐞 Protect and support your beneficial insect populations

Even on those not-so-great garden days, take a moment to stop and look around. Your garden is absolutely full of life! You might just find a new friends you never knew you had 🐞

Thank you so much for the link (Fantastic Fungi) I'm half way through it and loving it. I knew much of this already but the fantastic visuals (both time lapse and CGI) will get people's attention and get them thinking.
It reminds me of the old book I read years ago: Rodale, Let It Rot! Paul Stamets is an amazing guy and no surprise to see him in this video.

“It feels like turning on a ‘light switch’ in your brain.”

That’s how one of our students described the guided visualization in Stage 1 of Spirit Gardening.

Is your world feeling small, lonely, confusing, and full of challenges? You can use this visualization exercise to flip your mental “light switch” too! In just a few minutes, you can shift your mindset to find the possibilities, connection, ease, and solutions that are already all around you.

It’s all about opening yourself up to abundance.

How?

Trade your garden worries for garden wonder by getting curious!

Stage 1 of Spirit Gardening is all about wonder.

The first stage of Spirit Gardening is all about wonder. Wonder is the first step to gaining more joy, hope, and energy in your garden, and you can access it by tapping into your childlike curiosity.

When your mind is in a curious state, it’s almost impossible not to find wonder… because Mother Nature is so freaking cool and mysterious!

mail

Cultivating curiosity and wonder is simple. All you have to do is think like a three year old and start asking “Why?”

You can tap into your curiosity anytime, anywhere. Just say to yourself…

“I wonder why ________ ?”

Try this short version of Stacey’s guided visualization from Stage 1 of Spirit Gardening:

1️⃣ Take your curiosity to your garden, and try this short version of Stacey’s guided visualization from Stage 1 of Spirit Gardening:

2️⃣ Take a notebook and go out to your garden, or sit in a comfy chair nearby. Close your eyes, and breathe deeply. You can set a timer for 5 minutes or count 50 breaths.

3️⃣ Tune into the sounds and sensations you’re experiencing. While your eyes are closed, ask Nature to show you her abundance.

When you’re ready, open your eyes and take a moment to really notice your garden. In your notebook, start writing down “I wonder why _______?” questions–as many as you can think of, no matter how silly.

If you have trouble figuring out where to start, notice…

🌷 Are there plants around you that you didn’t notice before you sat down?
🌱 Has anything new sprouted or grown?
🍃 Do leaves or flowers stand out to you that didn’t before? Why do they stand out?
🐦 How about any insects or birds? What are they up to?

Just sitting in your garden wondering can open a whole new world for you! Wondering connects you to the excitement and joy of Nature all around you.

Stacey discovered the power of this exercise one day when she was feeling down. She felt like she was watching other gardeners find success with plants she had struggled with for years. She couldn't help but feel a little broken.

The voice in her head was asking...

“Why does it seem like there are things that I can’t get for myself?”

She decided to sit down and meditate on this question in her garden. In her meditation, she asked nature to show her that life is full of abundance. And that she CAN have beautiful things for herself in her garden.

When Stacey opened her eyes, a WONDERful surprise greeted her!

All around her, she saw tiny asparagus plants popping up through the soil. It was September, and these asparagus plants shouldn’t have been there at all! Asparagus shoots up in early summer, so by September, they should’ve been tiny, dried up nubs.

But here they were… right in front of her! 😊🙌🌿✨

Nature was showing Stacey abundance. And it had been there all along! The only difference was that now her mind was open to see it.

That mindset of abundance is what we want for YOU in Stage 1 of your Spirit Gardening journey!

Try the short “I wonder…” exercise, and bring what you learned to our special Q&A session on Spirit Gardening with Stacey Murphy.

>>> Click here to save your spot for the How to Practice Spirit Gardening Q&A on August 7th

Stacey will be live to help you answer your gardening mindset questions.

Tomorrow, we’ll talk more about Stage 2 of Spirit Gardening… which will take a lot of the STRESS out of your garden! You’ll find out how to have ease on demand in your garden.

Until then, happy wondering!

Have you ever had a job where it felt like your boss might’ve been looking over your shoulder?

Like they were “just checking in” to make sure you’re working?

When you have a boss like that, it’s easy to pick out work that makes you look busy...even when you don’t have any real work to do.

Do you feel like you need to “look busy” for your garden? .

Many gardeners we’ve met treat their garden like a job. They have to stay busy, or they feel like they won’t get their payday of a harvest at the end!

And they put a lot of pressure on themselves for not doing enough.

But keeping busy isn’t always the most efficient or productive way to get things done. Doing extra work without seeing extra results is a one-way ticket to overwhelm and burnout. And burnout is one of the main reasons people give up gardening.

Do you want to love gardening for years to come?

Create a sustainable relationship with your garden by learning to take it easy.

That’s what today’s stage of Spirit Gardening is all about: Ease.

mail

But how do you “do ease?” Here’s a helpful question to ask yourself...

When do you feel the most at ease? 😌

Think about going to your favorite coffee shop to meet your best friend. You feel relaxed and comfortable. You can tell your friend anything and not feel judged. You can even just sit in silence observing the goings-on around you and feel at peace.

That is “doing ease!” And you can create that kind of relationship with your garden starting today.

Your garden shouldn’t feel like a bad boss. It should feel like visiting with your best friend.

Breathe, relax, and enjoy being among your plants.

When you’re at ease, you’re most observant of the world around you. You can take in the little things in nature and, most importantly, listen to what your plants are telling you!

You’ll learn more about your garden needs just sitting among your plants for a few minutes than from an hour of rushing around “keeping busy.” .

Being at ease is also a state of being with yourself. You’re trusting your intuition and what you feel is right for your garden.

Your goal for Stage 2 of Spirit Gardening is to sit in your garden and be at peace instead of “doing” your next project.

Want to learn more about creating ease in your garden routine?

Stacey is hosting a live Q&A on August 7th answering your questions about Spirit Gardening and how ease can help you get more joy and abundance from your garden. Submit your questions here!

>>> CLICK HERE to save your spot for the Live Spirit Gardening Q&A

We hope to see you there!

To more EASE in your garden,
🌱 The Grow Your Own Vegetables Team 🌱

P.S. — We’ll be back tomorrow to show you how to have more FUN in your garden while growing more than ever before!

Have you ever seen children playing house? (Or remember doing it yourself!)

Pretending to be adults going about their everyday life. Going to work, making dinner, going shopping. They turn things that we adults often find dull and boring into play.

And they have a blast doing it!!

Numerous studies have shown that imaginative play is how children develop their social, emotional, and language skills.

It turns out that play is learning.

There are reasons that so many math games, reading games, and science games exist. You are designed to learn more when you having fun!

That's why the 3rd stage of Spirit Gardening is Play.

Gardening is the best way to get the freshest, healthiest food.

But what if we told you that gardening does a lot to keep your MIND healthy too?

Studies have shown that gardening provides incredible health benefits for your brain, including:

🧘 Less stress and anxiety, more peace and contentment
💪 Self-esteem when your hard work pays off with a bountiful harvest
🤓 Improved attention span and concentration
💞 Social bonding when you garden with others or share your harvests in your community.

And when you apply Spirit Gardening, it takes these health benefits and amplifies them. Stage 4 of Spirit Gardening is all about your evolution.

mail

You’ll take what you’ve learned from the previous three stages and decide how to grow and evolve from it.

Here’s how...

Stage 1: You fostered a mindset of wonder and curiosity.
Stage 2: You listened to your plants and noticed things about them and your garden.
Stage 3: You took playful, inspired action based on your observations
Stage 4: Now your garden has responded to what you did, and you’ll choose how you respond to your garden.

Your garden’s response may or may not be what you expected. Maybe you wanted bigger zucchini and a more abundant harvest. But instead, you got similar-sized zucchini to last year and less of them.

Your opportunity to evolve and grow lies right here.

No matter what the outcomes are, you get to choose the story about what happens!

Many people react to not getting the result they wanted with guilt, anger, or shame. They feel like failures.

Your garden is an amazing place to connect with and work through these darker emotions. It’s okay and totally normal to feel that guilt, anger, and shame! But when you Spirit Garden, you learn to release those emotions. You realize these feelings are just teachers to help you get closer to your goals next season.

You always win! Because you either got what you want or you gained a lesson.

What happens in your garden is not your fault. But how you choose to respond to what happens is your responsibility.

As you grow and evolve in this stage, you’ll realize that your garden does so much more than nourish and rejuvenate your body. It nourishes and rejuvenates your mind as well.

You’re going to feel more successful, and we promise that you will see positive results with time.

Gardening for this kind of growth is therapy.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg!Which is why we want to invite you to join Stacey LIVE this Sunday, August 7th for her “How to Practice Spirit Gardening Q&A”.

What if we told you that you could have SO much abundance in your garden that you’ll start to RIP OUT plants to make room?

It may sound far-fetched. But it’s totally possible when you live in the 5th stage of Spirit Gardening… AWE!

mail

This stage is so powerful, it can make all other stages feel like a warm up to true Spirit Gardening. We’ll explain how in a bit…

First, let’s talk about how we get to awe.

If you’ve noticed a theme so far, kids know how to do this stage a lot better than adults. The whole world leaves kids in awe!

Remember thinking that your dad was the strongest man in the world?
Or that your mom made the best mac and cheese EVER?

That’s because you were living in a state of awe. Everything was new and exciting! And there were all these people around you who had more experience at this “life” stuff.

You felt like these people had magic at their fingertips.

🚨Spoiler Alert 🚨 They probably didn’t use magic, but what they gave you is much more powerful…

… LOVE!

And here’s a not-so-surprising surprise… Love works for your garden too!

Ikea did a study with two plants that Stacey shared recently. They experimented with “loving” one plant and “bullying” the other one. The result?

The loved plant thrived, and the bullied plant wilted:

mail

The same lesson works in your garden. If you focus on what is thriving and love it, you will help it thrive even more!

To be honest, we don’t know exactly how it all works. But we’ve seen it work for our students too many times to think this isn’t real.

When you focus your love on something, it thrives!

It wants to grow even more for you and make even more delicious herbs and vegetables!

And if something doesn’t respond to your love, guess what?

You can actually PULL it from your garden. Yes, that’s right. You can take plants out of your garden at any time.

Because here’s the counter-intuitive truth…the thriving parts of your garden will be more than happy to take up the space! This may seem totally crazy, but it works.

And if the plant you’re pulling out is one you really want to harvest this year…don’t worry!

Sometimes, just pulling out one plant that is doing so-so and replacing it with a fresh starter is enough. Eventually (and with enough love), you will get to harvest all the vegetables and herbs you want. All plants respond to love.

But you don’t need to go crazy loving on your plants, either (you can if you want to, though!). Sometimes, just having your morning coffee with your plants and telling them what good things might be happening in your day is enough.

If you want MORE examples on how gardeners like you love on their plants, come to the live Q&A session tomorrow, August 7th:

>>> CLICK HERE to save your spot for the Spirit Gardening LIVE Q&A

Stacey will be sharing some of her favorite techniques for living in Stage 5 of Spirit Gardening, Awe.

It’s really a magical stage to be in once you practice for a while!

You don’t have to go through the other stages to get to Awe, either. You’ll see how to reach stage 5 of Spirit Gardening even if you haven’t practiced the other 4 stages yet. Just come to the free, LIVE Spirit Gardening Q&A session.

We’d LOVE to see you there. 🙂

Container Gardening: Pick the Perfect Potting Mix
mail
When you imagine a thriving garden, what do you see? A sprawling country landscape, complete with chickens? Acres of vegetables? A cottage surrounded with herbs and flowers?

Gardens are so beautiful and exciting that our imaginations want to go big. But sometimes, thinking big can make gardening feel overwhelming and out of reach.

Since she founded Grow Your Own Vegetables, Stacey has taught tens of thousands of people about dozens of gardening topics. She got started with just two trays of greens on a bookshelf in a studio apartment in Brooklyn, and everything grew from there.

Big garden dreams often start small.

Growing a container garden is a simple step that can lead to big things, no matter how much garden space or experience you have. Containers give you the flexibility to grow indoors or outdoors. For beginners, container growing offers a chance to learn gardening basics without having to first invest a lot of time and money. For more experienced growers, incorporating containers into your garden routine can increase your garden space and extend your growing season.

Just a few considerations can get your container garden growing quickly and easily.

Plants grown in containers are not connected to the earth’s soil, biology, or nutritional resources. They rely on the fertility available in the container to thrive. That’s why one of the most important elements to get right for container gardening is the growing medium!

Download Your Free Copy of Container Growing Medium here!

If you’ve ever shopped for growing medium at a garden center, you know how confusing it can be. Are you looking for soil? Garden soil? Potting soil? Potting mix? Seed starting mix? What’s the difference? Oh, and should it be natural? Organic? OMRI listed? Should it have fertilizers included? Ahhh!

There are so many options available. So how do you choose what’s right for you?

We’re here to help! In this video and free download, you’ll find helpful tips on selecting your container growing medium:

🌿 Why to use potting mix instead of soil in your containers
🌿 Terminology tips to demystify potting mix packaging, so you can shop smart
🌿 Key ingredients to look for that give your plants all the nutrition the need…naturally!
🌿 Chemical additives and fertilizers to avoid
🌿 Labels to look for to ensure your mix is made from natural sources

Once you know how potting mix ingredients work together to provide fertility to your plants, you are empowered to make great choices.

Download Your Free Copy of Container Growing Medium here!

Gardens don’t have to be big to give you delicious, nutrient-dense food that saves you money, boosts your health, and brings you joy. A thriving garden can happen anywhere!

Just a few small, simple steps, and you can get started growing your container garden TODAY.

Get started! See what grows!

Here's last night's potatoes and today's take
P1460489.JPG

P1460490.JPG

These potatoes went in a week earlier than my others did and you can see the difference in the harvests from the two different plots. The first plot posted weeks ago actually was grown in better dirt than these but these are bigger. Potatoes are so easy to grow and good potatoes (organic ones) are getting outrageous in price, $7.99 for 3 pounds at my Walmart and the non-organic are so full of GMOs they aren't fit for consumption.

P1460493.JPG

Here's the whole take, a couple hot peppers, box of cukes, two boxes of tomatoes plus the three I ate while pickin them (that always happens) and the taders from last night all washed

The book "The Botany of Desire" by Michael Pollan was eye opening. I've never wanted non-organic potatoes since reading it. He talked about how the potatoes are sprayed with pesticide on a schedule, I think he said four times during the growing season, and potatoes are thin skinned. The poison goes into the soil and soaks into the plant roots. And GMO, I think we have no idea what it is doing to all organisms from garden microbes to humans, in the long run. The author speculated that the plant could, at some point, simply refuse to grow in a domesticated form for us anymore, in protest. The full title was "The Botany of Desire, a Plant's Eye View of the World", so he looked at farming in terms of a cooperation between the plant and the human. Cooperating with us, the potato ensures its own proliferation by letting itself be farmed, but Pollan, in a very non-woo approach, indicated that plants have their own imperatives for healthy survival.

Have you heard about this, an Amish organic farm that sells privately to its food club membership, under siege by the US government:

and more on it:

It's the world we live in. These government parasites won't be happy until we're all dying from an unhealthy diet.

Michael Pollan and I would get along great, he is so right, the non-organic potatoes in the stores are GMO potatoes and deadly poison to humans. (also very high on the dirty dozen list, none of the dirty dozen veggies that are not organic are not fit for human consumption. GMO's have been proven to cause cancer just by touch so just think about what it does when you eat it o_O:crazy:
Thank you, I'll haveta check that book out, I am sure I would like it cause that's just how I grow, in harmony with the plant.

Yes I had heard about the Amish farm but never seen much on it yet, thank you for the links

How very true, them and some of the very wealthy (Bill Gates for one) say there's too many people in the world for the food produced.
