Hi Jimi,

Imagine having fresh greens ready in just days—right on your kitchen counter!

(Yep, even in the winter.)

Microgreens are tiny, flavorful greens that grow fast, so you can enjoy fresh, homegrown greens in as little as 7-14 days! Whether you’re looking to add a pop of flavor to meals or just love the idea of harvesting your own food, microgreens make it easy to bring the farm to your kitchen. 🥗

If you’ve wanted to try growing some, our friends over at Grow Your Own Vegetables are holding a LIVE microgreen event Dec. 10-12. Led by commercial microgreen grower Crystal Meserole, the event will include free microgreen training and Q&As—and you’re invited!

Why grow microgreens?

🌿 Super fast growth — from seed to plate in a week or two!

🌿 Incredibly fresh — you can snip and enjoy them at peak flavor.

🌿 Grow indoors — so you can enjoy greens year-round!

You literally can’t get any fresher than the greens you grow in your own house!

Jimi, did life get in the way of catching all the sessions during The Magic of Microgreens this week? You’re not alone! We’ve received so many messages asking for access to the replays. And we have great news—your chance to dive back in is here!

Magic of MIcrogreens ENCORE Weekend

For this weekend only, all three days of event recordings are available for you to watch—whether you missed a session or want to revisit your favorite tips and insights. It’s the perfect companion to your cozy weekend vibes (maybe alongside some holiday movies?).

>>> Access the full Magic of Microgreens Encore Replay

You can watch from now until 11:59pm Pacific on Sunday, December 15th.

We answered dozens of microgreen questions during the event but there are still several more and we want to do our best to cover enough information to equip you with confidence to get started.

So, we decided to do one more Q&A session this Monday, December 16th, at 10am PT / 1pm ET to get through more of your questions. 👏

We hope you join us … you never know, we may have some fun surprises up our sleeves!

>>> See Q&A details, submit your questions & more!

We’ve reviewed 100’s of takeaways from The Magic of Microgreens attendees and there are so many people who are excited to start growing!

Here’s what attendees are saying about the event:
📝 “Love this course. Sooooo much information. Great question and answer periods!” Amy
🌱 ““Yes! I learned so much and feel very empowered to go forth and grow.” Alva
💡 “I love the expertise that Crystal brings to the table in this event/mini-course.” Larisa

One recurring theme? The information is invaluable no matter your skill level—whether you’re just getting started or already a seasoned gardener. Even a CPA in the chat was amazed by Crystal’s cost comparison of growing your own microgreens versus buying them at the store!

Don’t miss this opportunity to soak in the wisdom and inspiration before it’s gone. And we’d love for you to join us for the live Q&A on Monday—you might even catch a surprise or two!

Enjoy the encore, and we hope to see you Monday!

Some 10,000 years ago, as humans shifted from hunter-gatherer societies to permanent settlements, the cultivation and modification of crops began. Plants were crossbred to enhance their best traits, and this process gradually improved the taste, size, and yield of their fruit. Today, our modern produce tells the story of the coevolution between humans and the plants we eat.

Proposed farm bill poses threat to farmers.

@Jimi, I was hearing on a podcast that, due to atmospheric spraying (chemtrails), soils are so full of aluminum that farmers and gardeners are finding it kills their heirloom and conventional seeds, so that only GMO seeds will grow. It turns out the fulvic acid, which you can get online or in garden centers, in powder by the pound, takes up the aluminum and restores your soil.

I think those heavy metals might be the problem with some landscape shrub I planted 2-3 years ago that are not growing. They're still alive though.

Can I share something? I’ve made a lot of gardening mistakes. From planting in the wrong spots to overwatering (RIP, my first herb garden), I’ve been through it.

Here’s a tip I wish I knew earlier:

Always plant with spacing in mind. Overcrowding can lead to competition for sunlight, water, and nutrients, resulting in stunted plants or no harvest at all.

These are the kinds of lessons I’ve learned, and why I’m so excited about the Gardening & Homesteading Bundle. It’s packed with tools that have turned my gardening “fails” into wins.

Here are a few standouts:

  • Ultimate Guide to Growing and Preserving Tomatoes: This saved me from tomato heartbreak (and gave me a freezer full of sauce!).
  • Perfect Plant Guild Framework: I finally learned how to plant combinations that support each other and thrive.
  • Indoor Container Gardening: For Food and Fun: Because sometimes the best gardens are the ones on your windowsill.

Every gardener has their challenges, but you don’t have to tackle them alone.

Your urban farming hack for this week is how to grow perfect tomatoes.

If you’ve already grown tomatoes or tried sun-ripened tomatoes fresh from the vine, you know how superior homegrown tomatoes are to those bought at the store.

To be honest… I can hardly stand the taste of store bought tomatoes now that I know how juicy and delicious homegrown tomatoes are.

Check out this article from Jason Johns on Growing Tomatoes from side shoots.

And while you're preparing to plant your tomatoes, bookmark this oven roasted tomato soup recipe for your harvest!

Tomatoes are the perfect crop to grow at home because they also do well in containers. Ready, set, grow!

MILLIONS AGAINST MONSANTO

February 7: Get the Military-Pharmaceutical-Industrial Complex Out of Food & Farming

The same companies that make toxic pesticides and genetically-engineered Frankenfoods make chemical and biological weapons–and have colonial interests that involve them in U.S. war-making. These are also the companies peddling the pharmaceuticals that, by some estimates, are the leading cause of death in the U.S.
The secret military history of Bayer and Monsanto goes back to World War I when an invention that would win the Nobel Prize for its use in agriculture was tested on the battlefield, killing thousands with poison gas. During the Holocaust, Bayer ran medical research laboratories and massive factories out of the concentration camps where its Zyklon B was used in the gas chambers. Monsanto was instrumental in developing the bombs that needlessly murdered hundreds of thousands of people in Japan and remained a nuclear weapons contractor until its plants became superfund sites in the 1990s. Today, Bayer and Monsanto, which merged in 2018, are the monopoly Pentagon supplier of the white phosphorus weapons Israel is using in Gaza and Lebanon.
Alexis Baden-Mayer, political director of Organic Consumers Association, is giving a talk on this subject at the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker House in Washington, DC, on Friday, February 7 at 7:30 pm. You’re welcome to join in person if you’re in town. Otherwise, please watch online on OCA’s Rokfin or Rumble channels.

Hey there,

Gardening can feel expensive—soil, seeds, tools—but the truth is, it doesn't have to be.

Here's a budget-friendly tip:
Save seeds from this year's harvest. Dry and store seeds from your favorite plants, so you don't have to purchase them again next year. It's free and sustainable!

One of the things I love about the Gardening & Homesteading Bundle is how many budget-friendly ideas it includes:

  • Quick and Easy Freezer Preserving: Save money by preserving your garden's bounty instead of letting it go to waste.
  • Jump Start Your Urban Homestead with Goats: Learn sustainable practices that make every dollar count.
Big dreams don't have to come with big costs.
Cheers,

Hey Jimi,

Last year we tried growing a new crop in half-barrel containers filled with old potting soil mix.

They were honestly some of the weirdest-looking tubers I’ve ever seen. Just look at these little guys!

chinese artichokes

These are Chinese artichokes, also known as crosnes (pronounced crones). Despite their unappetizing appearance, they are highly nutritious—and extremely low maintenance, considering how they thrived in our half-barrels!

Originally cultivated in China and Japan, these tubers made their way to France in the late 1800s, where they became a delicacy and were named after the town of Crosne. While still rare in U.S. gardens, they are slowly becoming more sought-after, especially among chefs who love their crisp texture and versatility.

Are they worth growing?

Chinese artichokes have a crisp texture and mild, slightly sweet flavor, perfect for fresh eating, stir-fries, and salads. They are also high in fiber and antioxidants, and low in calories, offering a healthy alternative to traditional root crops.

Will they sell at your local farmers market? Depending on your market, they may fly or just sit there! You may have to educate your customers on how to use them in the kitchen.

But these crunchy, nutty tubers are gaining popularity in high-end restaurants, where chefs use them fresh, pickled, roasted, or even as a delicate garnish.

Growing tips:

Although we’re still getting the hang of growing these odd tubers, we’ve found they thrive in containers, raised beds, or loose, well-aerated soil with high organic matter.

Loose soil is the key. If your soil is too compact, the tubers may not grow well and will be difficult to harvest. If you have heavy soil, Jerusalem artichokes might be a better fit, as they have a similar taste to Chinese artichokes.

  • Zones 7-9: Chinese artichokes are resilient perennials, and will grow aggressively in warm areas—to the point where you might need to keep them from spreading too much!
  • Zones 4-6: They die back in winter in colder zones but return in spring. A heavy mulch layer will help protect them overwinter.
  • Zone 4 & colder: You can still grow them as an annual or overwinter them indoors in containers.
If you're looking to grow something unique that chefs are excited about, without taking up a lot of your time, Chinese artichokes (crosnes) are worth a try.

Cheers,

It’s always a good idea to know how to grow some of your own food, so here are some cool gardening resources I found:

  1. Growing Food On A Balcony. A lot of you don’t have a yard, so here’s a simple video on how to have a sizable vegetable garden on a very small balcony. It’s easier than you think.
  2. Growing a Medicinal Herb Garden. I’ve realized its not just food we can grow, but also natural supplements. Especially supplements that boost immunity. Here’s a quick guide on the top 20 herbal remedies to have in your garden. And the best part? Most of them are actually flowering plants, so you can beautify your space and have healing herbs at the same time.
  3. Tower Gardens. I had one of these for years before my kids came along and just didn’t have the time to tend to it (plus the kids thought it was super fun to make a gigantic mess out of it). I wish I still had it. They are pretty easy and grow quite a lot of greens in an extremely small space.
