Insufficient REM Sleep Can Shorten Your Life
Dr. Chauncey Crandall, M.D., writes:

Sleep is essential for good health, and too little of it may shorten your life, according to one study. REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is when dreams occur and the body repairs itself. For every 5% reduction in REM sleep, mortality rates increase 13% to 17% among older and middle-aged adults.
Special: The Simple Secret to Really Good Sleep
The study followed more than 2,600 men, average age 76, for a median of 12 years. Researchers also collected data on nearly 1,400 men and women, average age 52, who were part of another study and were followed for a median of 21 years.
In both groups, poor REM sleep was tied to early death from any cause as well as death from cardiovascular and other diseases. This shows that it’s not just total sleep time that’s important, but the right balance of the different stages of sleep.

Ever heat up leftovers in a plastic container?
You might want to rethink that.
A recent study found something that should make all of us pause.
Out of roughly 14,000 chemicals used in food packaging, researchers detected more than 3,600 of them inside human bodies. Not in factories or labs. In real people.
They showed up in blood. In breast milk. Even in hair samples.
These aren’t harmless compounds either.
We’re talking about chemicals like PFAS, phthalates, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Substances known for interfering with hormones, metabolism, and long-term health.
Here’s the part most people don’t realize.
Heat and fat dramatically increase how fast these chemicals move out of packaging and into food.
That means reheating leftovers, microwaving takeout, or pouring hot, oily food into plastic is basically the worst-case scenario.
Microwaving takeout in the original container? Big mistake.
And cardboard isn’t the safe alternative people assume it is.
Many paper and recycled paper packages are treated with coatings, residues, or grease-resistant chemicals that also migrate into food when hot.
Before this turns into a “burn everything you own” situation, know this...
Cold storage in plastic is far less concerning than heating. Occasional exposure isn’t the same as daily habits. You don’t need to throw out your kitchen today.

When food is hot, use glass, stainless steel, or ceramic. Reheat on the stove, in the oven, or a toaster oven instead of the microwave. Avoid putting hot or fatty foods into plastic whenever you can.
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about lowering your daily load.
Chemical exposure today isn’t about one dramatic event. It’s about small amounts, over and over, for years. And while the body is remarkably good at detoxifying, it works best when it’s not being overwhelmed nonstop.

What if the new “transparent” food labels weren’t designed to inform you…but to mislead you just enough to keep ultra-processed products flying off the shelves?

The FDA’s new 2025 front-of-package label proposal promises clarity with simple “low/medium/high” categories for sugar, sodium, and saturated fat. Sounds like progress—until you look closer. With loophole-friendly thresholds, voluntary timelines, and no mention of additives or processing, it becomes what it truly is: transparency theater.

A cereal loaded with emulsifiers, gums, dyes, and ultra-processed starches could still earn a comforting “low sugar” badge. It’s the illusion of health without the substance.

Behind the scenes, Big Food continues to deploy its most effective tactics—hiding dangerous ingredients in plain sight. Oversimplified sugar labels mask reality: “39 grams” means nothing to most people, but “10 teaspoons” makes it easy for people to imagine and is more likely to lead to behavior change. Ingredient lists read like chemistry textbooks, buried in microscopic fonts designed to be unreadable.​
And then there’s sugar splitting—the trick of using several different sugars in smaller amounts so none of them shows up high on the ingredient list, even though together they add up to a lot of sugar. Even “natural flavors” function as a black box for additives, solvents, and synthetic compounds that never show up explicitly on the label.

Here’s just a taste of the labeling maneuvers engineered to confuse, not clarify:
  • Sugar-splitting to push sweeteners lower on ingredient lists
  • Microscopic fonts that discourage even trying to read labels
  • Undisclosed additives and emulsifiers under vague umbrella terms
  • Health-washing claims (“whole grain,” “heart healthy,” “high protein”) on ultra-processed junk
  • GMO disclosure buried behind QR codes most consumers never scan
And this isn’t new. The GMO labeling battle revealed the industry’s real playbook: delay, obscure, distract, and overwhelm. Through lobbying, dark-money groups, astroturf “grassroots” campaigns, and deceptive advertising, Big Food successfully replaced clear labeling with loophole-laden rules no ordinary shopper can navigate.​
The result? A system that pretends to inform the public while keeping them in the dark.

What is Sudden Cardiac Death?

Sudden cardiac death is the largest cause of natural death in the U.S. This cardiac event typically occurs when blockages in blood vessels — often caused by a blood clot inside one of the arteries of the heart — stop blood flow, which can lead to cardiac arrest, usually within an hour of symptoms.

An estimated 365,000 sudden cardiac deaths, or nearly 1,000 per day, occur annually outside of hospital settings, and nearly 90 percent are fatal. Of these sudden deaths, 70 percent happen in people’s homes, 18 percent in public places, and the remainder in nursing homes.

Though most people use the terms “sudden cardiac arrest” and “heart attack” interchangeably, the two events are different. A heart attack occurs when a blocked artery prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching a section of the heart. If the blocked artery is not reopened quickly, the part of the heart normally nourished by that artery begins to die.

The longer a person goes without treatment, the greater the damage. The symptoms of a heart attack may be immediate and intense. But more often, symptoms start slowly and persist for hours, days, or even weeks before a heart attack occurs. And unlike sudden cardiac arrest, the heart usually does not stop beating during a heart attack.

On the other hand, sudden cardiac arrest often occurs without warning. It is triggered by an electrical malfunction in the heart, leading to an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). With its pumping action disrupted, the heart can’t get blood to the brain, lungs, and other organs. Within a matter of seconds, a person loses consciousness and has no pulse. If untreated, death occurs within minutes.

Is walking a good enough exercise for adults to stay fit? And if it is, what, exactly, is that magic number of steps needed to maintain our health?
It’s a question I’m sure we all think about as we age: Can something as simple as walking really improve your health as you get older? The short answer: Yes, and often more than you’d expect. Let’s unpack what the science says in a practical, no-nonsense way, as explored in a recent study from Educational Gerontology.
But you might ask yourself, why do researchers even ask this question. Everybody walks, right? Walking is the world’s most common form of physical activity. It’s:
  • Accessible (no gym membership needed).
  • Low-impact (gentle on joints and safe for most people).
  • Flexible (you can do it indoors, outdoors, short or long).
Because older adults often face barriers to exercise, from arthritis to balance issues to busy schedules, scientists want to know whether walking by itself can deliver meaningful health benefits. Hence the research.
Here’s what the science found in simple terms. Big picture: yes, walking does help! Multiple studies and reviews show that regular walking is linked with improvements in physical health, mental health, and quality of life for older adults. In fact, walking is often recommended as a cornerstone of healthy aging by public health guidelines.
Your heart loves it, too. Walking strengthens the heart and blood vessels. People who walk regularly have:
  • Lower blood pressure.
  • Better cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
  • Lower risk of heart disease and stroke.
Those benefits make walking a powerful tool for preventing and managing cardiovascular disease, one of the major causes of disability and death in older adults.
And a stroll isn’t just good for heart health. Walking is a way to sharpen the brain and appears to help in two important ways:
  • Mental health: Regular walking is linked with lower symptoms of depression and anxiety, likely because it releases endorphins and breaks up sedentary time.
  • Cognition: Some research suggests walking, especially at a brisk pace, may support memory and thinking skills, potentially lowering dementia risk.
Walking aids balance, mobility, and everyday function, too. Health isn’t just about how you feel, it’s about how you move. Walking:
  • Improves balance and gait.
  • Helps preserve leg strength.
  • Reduces risk factors for falls.
That matters because falls are a major health threat for older adults.
And then there’s quality of life to think about, as well as life span. People who walk more tend to report better overall quality of life, boasting more energy, better sleep, and greater independence. Plus, walking is linked with lower mortality risk in multiple long-term studies.
So, is walking enough? Well… Yes, it’s useful but while walking alone does promote health benefits in older adults and evidence shows it can improve endurance, quality of life, mood, heart health, and functional ability, walking isn’t a “magic bullet.” It’s most powerful when it’s part of a broader active lifestyle. That’s the honest part scientists are careful to say. Why? Because other types of activity, like strength training, balance work, or even light resistance exercises, builds muscle and bone strength in ways walking alone doesn’t fully address. So walking is enough to help you, but you’ll get even better results when you combine it with other activities.
But what about the number of steps per day? Forget the old myth of needing 10,000 steps a day, that number was never a science-based target. Recent research suggests:
  • 4,000–7,000 steps a day can significantly reduce disease risk compared to very low activity.
  • Even small increases, like adding 1,000 extra steps, are linked with measurable health improvements.
  • The exact number isn’t as important as being consistent.
So, what can you do? Well, here’s how to make walking work for your health without overthinking it:
  • Start where you are. If you do almost no walking, begin with 10–15 minutes daily. If you already walk, aim for 30–45 minutes most days.
  • Keep it real. Break walks into chunks. Even short bouts count toward health benefits. Pick routes you enjoy. Nature and good company make movement stick.
  • Add strength & balance. Try simple exercises (like sit-to-stands, heel raises, or gentle yoga) 2 to 3 times a week. These help preserve muscle and reduce fall risk.
  • Track, but don’t obsess. A step counter helps but movement quality matters too (brisk walking is great).
Walking is enough to offer meaningful health benefits for older adults. It’s safe, doable, and powerful. But the biggest wins come when you think of walking as part of an active lifestyle, one that includes strength, balance, and joyful movement. Start small. Stay consistent. Keep going. Your body and brain will thank you.​

SCOTUS conferenced on the Monsanto v. Durnell case last Friday. We did not know what they would decide, but the Court relisted the case to be conferenced this Friday. This means they are scheduled to discuss the case on Friday January 16th, and we will be watching the orders of the Court on Friday afternoon for any sign of what they are going to do with the case.

  • Iowa: SF 394 (in session January 12 - April 21, 2026) - Passed Senate; First Reading in House
  • Missouri: HB 2712, SB 1005, SB 1180 (in session January 7 - May 15, 2026) – both introduced
  • Florida: SB 518, HB 443 (in session January 13 - March 13, 2026) - Both bills introduced and referred to committee
These bills will carry over in the following states when their legislatures begin:

  • Oklahoma: SB 1078, HB 1755 (session begins February 2 - May 29, 2026) - SB 1078 title amended, out of committee; HB 1755 referred to Rules Committee
  • North Carolina: Amendment to Farm Bill (S401, S639) (session begins April 21 - August 31, 2026) - S401 in conference committee; S639 referred to House committee
Modern Ag Alliance indicated they would be running bills in 8 to 10 states. We are tracking potential legislation in the following states based on Modern Ag Alliance activity:

  • Idaho: Filed in 2024, died on Senate floor; filed in 2025, died in committee (in session January 12 - April 10, 2026)
  • Wyoming: Filed in 2025, died in committee (in session February 9 - March 6, 2026)
Tennessee is the first state that I expect to act on the bill. SB 527 has already passed and HB 809 is in its last committee before it would go to the House floor. The Tennessee House Judiciary Committee will have HB 809 on its agenda on the second calendared meeting. We will see the calendar tomorrow, and know the exact date then.

Finally, on November 28, 2025, a scientific journal formally retracted the most influential and foundational studies on glyphosate safety after Monsanto company documents—revealed through litigation—proved that Monsanto secretly wrote the paper and paid outside scientists to put their names on it. Monsanto’s government affairs team called it "the" reference on Roundup and glyphosate safety. The plan was “to utilize it both in the defense of Roundup and Roundup Ready crops worldwideto be utilized by the next tier of third party scientists for continued Roundup [Freedom to Operate].” The fraudulent study was cited over 800 times (top 0.1% of glyphosate research), including by EPA, and it shaped regulatory decisions worldwide for 25 years. Hundreds of thousands of farmers and other users developed cancer; many have died because they were lied to.
