Don't Gum Up the Works: What Does Oil Pulling Do?


Taking care of yourself in a world that hopes you won’t is radical. Right?


But it doesn’t always look the way we think it will… It doesn’t always look like self-soothing. It doesn’t always look like saying “yes” to our momentary flashes of whims that we believe will stave off discomfort. It doesn’t always look like abdicating our responsibilities when we don’t believe there’s any more gas in the tank.


Caring for your gums isn’t exactly sexy work – it definitely doesn’t feel as luxurious and decadent as wine, cheese, and a bubble bath.


Except when you consider all the favors you’re doing future-you when you care for them. Improper gum care, and downright neglect of the oral microbiome, cracks the door ajar for chronic diseases down the line.


And you know who makes the best patients? The chronically diseased.



Remember when we said taking care of yourself was radical? That’s why.


The problem is, most people are criminally undereducated about the microbiomes inside the human body in general, let alone how to support them.


3,000 years ago, before we had dentists, private health insurance, oral surgery, and crippling medical debt, we had oil pulling.


Or rather, Ayurvedic medicine had oil pulling.


What Exactly Is It?


Oil pulling may sound mysterious, but it’s actually pretty straight-forward – you’re pulling gunk (made of harmful bacteria that doesn’t belong in your mouth) out of your gums by swishing with oil.


Also called kavala and gundusha, you typically use coconut oil for its antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties (plus, it’s got vitamin E. More on that later.)


You can also use olive, sesame, sunflower, or any other kind of oil you want! But since it’s going to be in your mouth for 20 minutes, you probably want to use oil that tastes nice and does the best job.


Put simply?




  • Take a tablespoon of oil into your mouth.

  • Gently swish it around for 20 minutes without swallowing any of it. Swish gently – you don’t want your jaw to lock up! Not as roughly as with mouthwash, but consistent.

  • Spit it into the trash when you’re through.

The reason oil pulling gained so much traction is that by primarily solving one problem – ridding the body of toxins and bad bacteria – dozens of ancillary problems get solved as well.


Think about how many ailments stem from an overgrowth of harmful flora in the oral microbiome…


Gingivitis. Periodontitis. Chronic headaches. Halitosis. Cavities. Blood infections. Tooth decay. Much more.


Without the bacteria build-up, you reduce the population that’s causing all of those problems.


How Does It Work?


The problem is, there is very little formal research done into oil pulling. Most of the evidence in favor of it is enthusiastic, anecdotal, and holistic.


S. mutans, one of the worst bacterial offenders in plaque (the film that builds up on your teeth and under your gums when you don’t make dental care a priority), gets swept away and trapped within the viscous oil as you’re swishing. When you spit it out, you spit the harmful bacteria, fungi, and microbes out with it.


It’s recommended that you do it for 20 minutes per day, but if you’ve got to start out smaller, that’s quite alright!


But swishing 20 minutes per day has been shown to reduce harmful bacteria quantities in as little as two weeks. The vitamin E in the coconut oil also supports gum regrowth and health.


Now, there’s also a bevy of benefits uncorroborated by rigorous, peer review studies.


A lot of people report whiter teeth. Some say it cures hangovers. Others insist it’ll get rid of a headache.


What it certainly does is remove plague and junk while also using the lauric acid and monolaurin in coconut oil to kill pathogens.


Because gum disease is so destructive, difficult, and expensive to treat, trying oil pulling makes a lot of sense.


When you think about how you can pamper your body, mind, and soul, think about how you can be proactive in preventing problems for yourself. 20 minutes every morning may go a long way!

I’ve been getting one that’s kale, celery, parsnip, fennel and lemon juice. It’s so yummy! But I can drink two a day, since I like it that much. But it’s got 6 servings of veggies in it! It tastes like it, too.

Happy Sunday, everyone. Hope you're doing well.

Today's email will be a little different. Here are some health, fitness, and food tips along with some random thoughts I've been batting around inside my head for a while. They don't quite belong in a blog or a book. This is the best place I could think of to put them.

1. Go around back behind the restaurant. Don't check the yelp score. Don't read reviews. The best thing you can do is to see if the restaurant has those big boxes of soybean oil out back.

2. Get comfortable with being weird. Pull-ups on traffic light poles as you wait for the crosswalk light to turn. Pushups or squats while pumping gas. Going barefoot to pick up the kid from school. Climb a tree, just because. Don't do anything illegal. Just don't be afraid to disrupt the norms.

3. Add collagen to store-bought watery broth.

4. Always sit at the sushi bar and order something interesting or odd. Oftentimes the chef will take a liking to you and give you stuff for free.

5. Time is not linear in dreams—a half hour dream can contain a year-long narrative. What does this mean for our sense of time in normal life?

6. For some reason, I want an alpaca to carry my pack on long backpacking trips. Anyone do this?

7. Oven brisket can be just as good as smoked brisket.

8. You should get your hands on black garlic. Incredible in marinades and sauces (or just eaten whole).

9. Peanut butter is the best (tasting) nut butter. No contest. Macadamia nuts are the best nut but the butter isn't as good. Go figure.

10. Every night should end around a fire.

11. A cold pilsner after a hard workout is worth it.

12. One of my earliest memories is the sound of deer hooves on the roof. Might not be real.

13. Archery is really fun. So is throwing a javelin.

14. Everyone should follow Timothy Williams on Instagram.

EMPATHY
It's undeniable that there's a lot going on in the world right now, and much of it is fuelled by hatred, which is fuelled by fear, which is fuelled by a lack of understanding. It stands to reason then, that much good could be accomplished, much healing, by focusing more of our attention on cultivating and practicing a higher degree of empathy in our lives.

I believe that no one is inherently better than anyone else. Those who are different from us are still human, and if we can open our minds and find a way to relate, to start to understand, to empathize, we increase our capacity for healing, within ourselves and in the world around us.

To get through treatment well, with our sanity and our health in tact, we need a great deal of empathy from those around us. Not just sympathy, their interpretation of what it might feel like for us, but real attempts to understand what we're going through. Understanding and kindness from people are so important throughout a cancer journey, both in the throws of treatment and afterwards when we are recovering mentally, emotionally, and physically. We need our bosses to understand why we aren't back at work yet; we need our friends to bring us meals or groceries or spend time supporting us, keeping us company and taking us to appointments; and we need our family to understand that we will all need to adjust to a new normal moving forward. Without these things and more, the path ahead of us is so much more difficult.

So, when we are through the worst of it, I feel like it is our responsibility to give empathy back out in the same amounts we received it, because we know first hand what a difference it can make in someone’s life. Whether it's understanding and being there for a friend or loved going through their own challenge next, or whether it's taking that first step towards understanding and reaching a friendly hand out to someone different from ourselves, empathy needs to be a foundational block in all of our lives. Without it, we can end up perpetuating isolation, loneliness, fear, misunderstanding, anger, and a whole lot of other negativities, within ourselves and also out into the world and those around us.

What we put out, we attract back. So, why not make it love, kindness, and EMPATHY?

My Star Supplements
This week I shared another of my star immunity boosting supplements, and it's one that was new for me a few months ago when I started taking it. It’s called lomatium, and it’s been used for a very long time by First Nations peoples in western North America to treat and prevent a wide array of illnesses. Studies have found lomatium to be effective against multiple viruses, including the rotavirus (the most common cause of diarrhea in infants and children worldwide, resulting in over 215,000 deaths annually), herpesvirus type 1, and even HIV.

It also works very well as a preventative, so it makes a great addition now during COVID and also during other high-risk times like cold and flu season.

Mental Health Monday
After sharing Dr. Neff’s resource about self-compassion on Friday, I wanted to talk a little bit about what self-compassion means to mean, how it has started to contribute to my healing (and how it can contribute to yours), and how it ties in with all of the learning and growth I have experienced post-cancer.

I hope that today’s video inspires you to show yourself a little more love and kindness and motivates you to take that first step towards more self-compassion, no matter how small.

New Research
This week, I shared some new and exciting research that has just come out on the Phase 1 trial of a new drug called berzosertib. Berzosertib works by blocking a protein that is vital for cancer cells to repair their DNA, making it impossible for them to repair cell damage and ultimately causing cell death.

Additionally, the side effects of this drug were quite minimal, especially compared to chemo and radiation. The future of conventional cancer treatment HAS to be targeted treatments that only go after cancer cells and cause no or minimal and reversible damage to healthy cells. That's why it's always so exciting to me when I hear about new targeted treatments being researched and seeing results.

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:

Celiac disease is characterized by antibodies against proteins in gluten. Those antibodies can damage the lining of the small intestine, resulting in an inability to properly digest and absorb nutrients from food.

The condition leads to severe diarrhea and malnourishment. If it continues, celiac disease can cause neurological disorders, cancer, and even death.

More than 3 million Americans are reported to have celiac disease — but it is vastly underdiagnosed. Celiac disease can only be identified with a biopsy of the small intestine.

I have many patients who suffer with gluten sensitivity, which can be diagnosed clinically. Both gluten sensitivity and celiac disease are treated the same way — by avoiding foods that contain gluten.

Common symptoms of gluten sensitivity include diarrhea, upset stomach, and bloating after eating products that contain gluten.

It can also be diagnosed with a blood test for antibodies to the protein gliadin, which is a component of gluten.

Should You Drink OJ Every Day?

The Houston Astros play baseball in Minute Maid Park. The Tampa Bay Rays are at home in Tropicana Field.

That’s great publicity for the orange juice industry. But is orange juice really good or bad for you? It turns out, it can be a little of both.

Pulp-free orange juice is filled with natural sugar (21 grams in 8 ounces). That means a lot of calories (112 per) and a big jolt to your blood sugar.

That's why we say, if you want the flavor of an orange, just have an orange. The healthiest way to get your flavonoids, polyphenols (antioxidants), and fiber is from the fruit itself.

On the other hand, a study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that men who drank a small glass (4-6 ounces) of orange juice daily were 47 percent less likely to suffer cognitive decline and dementia.

Want more good news? Men who consumed six daily servings of vegetables were 34 percent less likely to develop cognitive decline than men who consumed only two daily servings.

So while we still recommend getting your nutrients from whole fruits and vegetables, when that's not possible, have a little OJ. Just make sure it comes with fiber-rich pulp.

And add it to a glass of seltzer to help keep the serving to 4 ounces. Also, try adding vegetable juices to the OJ. Kale, beet, or spinach juice deliver super-nutrients with less sugar.
