"There Are Only Seven True Emotions" - Signed, Traditional Chinese Medicine

Onism: The name given to the feeling of realizing how little of the world we’ll each get to experience.

Anemoia: The name given to the feeling of being nostalgic for something you haven’t actually experienced.

Monachopsis: The name given to the feeling that you don’t belong where you are, that you’re not in the right place.

As granular as human beings have gotten through millennia of analysis…

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), all of these hyper focused feelings fall into one of only seven categories – the seven emotions.

Each of those emotions correlates to a specific organ. That means that bodily pain or unusual activity can be used to identify buried or unclear emotions.

In the Western medical model, these beliefs can’t, or rather haven’t been, proven. Joy doesn’t necessarily cause the heart to light up on an ECG, but you have probably felt a flutter, palpitation, or increased heart rate during euphoric moments.
image

TCM practitioners believe that any excess or recess of any of those emotions can cause organ irritation or inflammation, and that organ malfunction can cause an imbalance of its connected emotion – sort of the way that the vagus nerve allows the gut to affect the brain and the brain to affect the gut.

Let’s first identify the seven true emotions from which all other feelings spring, and which can affect each other (and their related organs):

The Seven Emotions

Per TCM, every emotion you ever feel is an iteration of one of these:

  1. Joy
  2. Anger
  3. Grief
  4. Worry
  5. Fear
  6. Shock
  7. Sorrow

The basic idea is that all of those feelings are perfectly natural – unavoidable, even. But should they assume control of our consciousness, should they push other feelings to the perimeters, should they overwhelm our senses…

We’ll be out of balance and in big trouble.

Here’s how…

  1. Joy affects the heart.
  2. Anger affects the liver.
  3. Grief affects the lungs.
  4. Worry affects the spleen.
  5. Fear affects the kidneys.
  6. Shock affects the heart, then kidneys.
  7. Sorrow affects the lungs.

Now, you may find yourself hard-pressed to tell the difference between shock and fear, fear and worry, grief and sorrow, etc.

The truth is that none of them exist in a vacuum and often are symbiotic with one another. Extrapolate what each emotion comes from and how it presents.

Grief relates to futility, to loss, to the intangible impermanence we all face. Sorrow can simply mean sadness, disappointment, emptiness and longing.

Shock relates more to panic and immediacy than fear, which is a chronic and persistent emotion.

Fear and worry aren’t the same either – fear may be irrational, while worry tends to indicate fixation, dwelling, solution-searching. Overthinking, in other words.

How Do They Manifest?

Let’s look at a few ways that disproportionate emotions can present throughout the body.

  1. Joy sounds like a good thing, right? Ancient Chinese practitioners believed in measure and balance. Excessive joy clouds judgment and vision, and because it is unsustainable, crashes into disillusionment at its logical end. It can cause heart palpitations, insomnia, mania, even heart attacks.
  2. Anger sends qi (energy) from the liver roiling upwards and out of control. Headaches, dizziness, high blood pressure, strokes, nosebleeds, burst vessels – all are possible due to excess anger.
  3. Grief, and if you’ve ever felt it you’ll probably recognize this, seems to strike at our very ability to breathe. In TCM, the lungs circulate qi. Grief can cause chest tightness, asthma, shortness of breath, crying, impaired circulation, loss of appetite, and more.
  4. Worry connects to the spleen and digestive system. Ever felt so trapped inside a worried thought, you couldn’t eat, felt constipated, or disrupted your menstrual cycle? Spleen problems are also linked to depression, feelings of physical weakness in the limbs, and bloating.
  5. Fear, when sustained, causes qi to sink. It’s related to the kidneys, and can cause trouble regulating bladder and bowels, back pains, sexual frustration, and more.
  6. Shock, or fright, or panic, first affects the heart, and then the kidneys. Think about a panic attack… those symptoms were identified long ago in TCM. Shock lowers blood flow to the kidneys and results in less oxygen.
  7. Sorrow affects the lungs similarly to the way grief does, and can be connected to bronchitis, shortness of breath, qi stagnation, insomnia, appetite suppression, and weakening of lung function.

Often, several emotions occur in tandem and wreak havoc throughout the organ systems of the body.

Understand that TCM is a complex and interconnected system of medicine, whereby natural elements of the world (air, water, fire, etc.) are also related to various organs and emotions.

We’ll get into those at a later date. In the meantime, consider paying closer attention to which emotions in your life tend to coincide with distinct physical discomforts.

Editor’s Note: If possible, when experiencing an emotion, notice where in your body you feel it. For example, is your chest tight? Are your shoulders up by your ears? Is your stomach in knots? Has your breathing changed? When you think about a situation, do you notice anything different in your body than before you started thinking about it? Understanding how your emotions can affect your physical body is a great step into your healing journey.

Intermittent Fasting: More Than Weight Loss

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

According to a recent review in the New England Journal of Medicine, intermittent fasting is not only a viable option for people looking to lose weight, it can also help stabilize blood sugar, improve memory, and may help fight cancer as well.

"The state of the science on intermittent fasting has evolved to the point that it now can be considered as one approach, with exercise and healthy food, to improving and maintaining health," said senior author Mark Mattson, a neuroscientist with Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore.

Special: Stubborn Belly Fat Can Be Fixed. Naturally.

That’s because when people are fasting, they are slowly burning through the glucose stored in their liver, which holds about 700 calories of glucose.

This process, called "metabolic switching," does not occur when people maintain a three-meals-a-day eating pattern. That means their bodies never run through their liver's energy stores and make the switch to fat-burning.

In the new paper, Mattson and colleagues summarized current scientific evidence that shows intermittent fasting can:

  • Stabilize blood sugar levels, increase resistance to stress, and suppress inflammation
  • Decrease blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and improve resting heart rate
  • Improve brain health and memory
"The reason is it's not completely cutting out any food group. It's not telling you don't eat carbs, or don't eat fat. It's just modulating when you're eating food," said Hannah Kittrell, a registered dietitian and manager of the Mount Sinai PhysioLab in New York City, a nutrition and exercise physiology clinic.

What Do Seaweed and Aloe Vera Have in Common?

Unless you live in a coastal region, it’s likely that sea vegetables and other tropical plants don’t factor heavily in your regular diet. And indeed, why would they?

In the past few years, you may have noticed these plants becoming trendy, popping in health-food stores, in pre-packaged snack varieties, in bottled drinks you can get at the gas station.

Maybe you looked the other way! Maybe you tried them. Maybe they forged a new place in the heralded corner of your heart you reserve for your favorite munchies.

But it’s likely that you didn’t realize these plant-based goodies all have something very important in common…

They can all have a positive and restorative effect on the functionality of your digestive system and the diversity of your gut’s microbiome.

Our Western diets largely don’t consist of gut-friendly foods – here, we’re wheat heavy, dairy heavy, mammalian byproduct heavy, and certainly processed-food heavy. We’re also less than 250 years old. We don’t have the same generational influence on traditional foods as countries with much longer histories.

In America, the focus isn’t on eating bioavailable foods. The focus is on manipulating the environment to produce the foods we want to sell and consume. (Otherwise, you’d think we’d see a lot more bison in our diets.)

For millennia, various cultures around the world have been using seawood, aloe vera, and algae for health purposes…

But for today’s inquiry, we’re going to focus on what they can do for your gut.

Seaweed and the Gut

Let’s consider a few things about seaweed…

First of all, it’s a form of algae. It grows on rocky shorelines and is most commonly eaten in Asian cuisine. However, you’ll notice that it’s not piled onto dishes the way we include kale, lettuce, and other greens here in the west.

That’s because it’s incredibly nutrient-dense. A little of it makes a huge difference. That’s why it’s often used to wrap sushi, in ramen, in smoothies, and as salad toppings.

Specifically as it relates to the gut, seawood’s dry weight is made up of 25-75% fiber. That’s much more than the average vegetable. In fact, 100 grams of seaweed (3.5 ounces) provides between 14 and 35% of your recommended daily intake of fiber.

We know that fiber is a powerful tool in regulating gut health. Since fiber cannot be broken down in the body, it serves to keep bowel movements operating with regularity as well as to feed beneficial bacteria in the gut.

But that’s not the only reason seaweed is a boon for gut health. Seaweed contains sulphated polysaccharides, which are a special kind of sugar.

These sugars help populations beneficial bacteria grow, while also aiding in the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that support the health of intestinal lining cells.

Finally, seaweed (nori, in particular) contains a carbohydrate called porphyran. For those unused to porphyran, it’s almost impossible to absorb – our microbiomes just don’t know how to. However, a new study from Stanford shows that simply including more porphyran-rich seaweed in our diets trains the microbiome to absorb and digest those nutrients.

And aloe vera? We’ve known for millennia how useful it can be.

Aloe Vera – Not Just for Sunburn

You’ve probably been using aloe vera your entire life to treat topical maladies like sunburn. Although its origins have been the source of some debate, recent research suggests it hails from the Arabian peninsula. Because it grew naturally along a popular trade route, it traveled widely and was used in traditional Ayurvedic medicinal practices in India.

But its recognition as a gut-healer is relatively new.

Because the properties in aloe vera juice help produce mucosal secretions, it’s credited with repairing tears in the intestinal membrane.

Its pulp, contained within the leathery leaves, has more than 200 biologically active compounds, many of which help to relieve spasms, act as natural laxatives, and soothe inflammation, offering relief to those suffering from IBS and other GI issues.

The biodiversity of this world is unfathomable.

And the truth is, most of what ails us can be treated with nutrient-dense plants all over the planet.

If your diet previously didn’t include seaweed or aloe vera, consider introducing them in the form of juices, smoothies, salads, soups, and culturally diverse dishes!

Your gut will certainly thank you for it.

How Incense Affects Brain Function: A Study

Maybe your first introduction to incense was that kid in your high school who never went anywhere without their guitar.

Maybe it’s always been a part of your religious or spiritual experience.

Maybe you found the smell and warmth calming, and could never quite put your finger on why.

From the Latin “to burn”, incense in one form or another has evolved along with humanity since time immemorial.

Or at least since about 5,500 years ago in India, or 4,000 years ago in China, or 3,500 years ago in Egypt.

Did these ancients know that the burning of incense had a distinct and traceable psychoactive effect on the brain? Probably not the way we can see it today.
image

For them, incense cleared away offending smells, was thought to cure asthma, connect with their deities, ward off evil demons, heal snakebites, kill insects, clear negative energies, and serve as medicine (in Ayurveda.)

The truth of those claims haven’t been confirmed by the Western medicinal model – but as functional medical practitioners – and anyone who’s ever been told by multiple doctors they have an undiagnosable condition only to have it diagnosed by a new one – that model isn’t exhaustive.

Incense is primarily made up of two materials: an aromatic oil and a combustible binding material.

Although today you can find incense in almost any scent you want, traditional scents were frankincense, cinnamon, sandalwood, patchouli, myrrh, and musk.

Binding materials were usually made from charcoal or wood powders.

Several years back, Johns Hopkins University and Hebrew University in Jerusalem sought to determine exactly how beneficial incense was on a neurological level.

What they found was fascinating.

Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid Channels

Ever heard of it?
image

Probably not. It’s a little understood ion channel that runs through the body – mainly through the skin, but also in the brain. In the skin, it’s primary function is to sense temperature. Without properly functioning ion TRPV channels, it’s difficult to notice elevations or reductions in temperature.

But its purpose in the brain hasn’t been understood very well scientifically.

A team of researchers administered doses of isolated incensole acetate from the resin of the Boswellia (Indian frankincense) plant to mice in a controlled setting.

They monitored the mice’s reactions and discovered no activation in the TRPV1, TRPV2, or TRPV4 channels.

However, the TRPV3 channel did experience activity.

So what does that mean?

Frankincense May Have Antidepressant Capabilities

Using standard mood-measurement exercises in the mice, the researchers determined that after ingesting the incensole acetate, the mice reacted with lower anxiety and depressive markers.

This occurred in conjunction with the activation of the TRPV3 ion channels.

Speaking plainly, frankincense incense has inherent antidepressant properties, lighting up a part of the brain we don’t know much about in modern medicine.

Additional studies have shown that this specific resin also has antinflammatory effects – and we know that inflammation is possibly the oldest indication of trouble in the human body.

These findings could:

  • Corroborate centuries of usage in holistic and foundational medicine as well as…

  • Help us dismantle the modern dependence on antidepressant and antianxiety medication being sold at exorbitant and uncapped pricing through the untouchable pharmacological machine.

More research is needed about how and why the TRPV3 ion channel is activated by constituents of frankincense resin to really harness its power…

But should you choose to use its essential oil in incense, you should know that some studies suggest incense can play a role in raising blood pressure or in triggering asthma.

Try keeping windows open for ventilation, or using low-smoke incense varieties!

Experiment to find what works best for you – and start with frankincense!

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:

In the journal FASEB, scientists reported on a study of the effects of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) — the major polyphenol in green tea — on insulin resistance and memory impairment.

The study was conducted on mice randomly divided into three groups: a control group; a high-fat, high-fructose diet group; and a high-fat, high-fructose diet group treated with EGCG. Memory loss was assessed by using a water maze test.

Special: The Hidden Cause of Fatigue & Low Energy

The EGCG group experienced a protective effect against the memory impairment that was seen in the high-fat, high fructose dietary group.

In addition, the researchers found EGCG was associated with protection against diet-induced neuronal damage. Markers of neural inflammation were also lower in the EGCG group.

Two-thirds of adults in the U.S. are overweight and one-third are obese. Obesity leads to an increase in inflammation in the body.

Inflammation in the brain can lead to an oxidative state where brain function can decline. Excess fat on the human body stimulates an increase in inflammatory disorders. EGCG is known to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cardioprotective effects.

Whether consumed in tea or taken in supplements, EGCG can help those who are suffering memory problems. But the first step for these patients is to eat a healthy diet free of refined sugar and refined carbohydrates and to exercise.

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., editor of the Natural Way to Health newsletter, is a board-certified family physician and one of the nation’s foremost practitioners of holistic medicine. In addition to his practice, Dr. Brownstein has lectured internationally to physicians and is the author of six very popular books.

Jimi,

Two-hundred and forty-four years ago, on July 4, 1776, the 13 colonies claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States.

That’s why we celebrate freedom and liberty on the 4th of July.

What does freedom mean to you? The right to free speech? The right to bear arms? The right to worship as you see fit? At its core, freedom means autonomy. The right to decide how you want to live your life. The right to make decisions for you and your family without interference from governments, armies, or corporate interests.

That includes the freedom of medical choice. Can you imagine a world in which the government told you what you could and couldn’t eat? What if there was a mandate telling you how much you needed to exercise or when you should go to bed? What if the government eventually requires all U.S. citizens to get a COVID-19 vaccine?

The government has absolutely NO BUSINESS meddling in our health and medical choices. Regardless, that hasn’t stopped them from sticking their proverbial nose where it doesn’t belong.

In the words of Dr. Benjamin Rush, signer of the Declaration of Independence:

“Unless we put Medical Freedom into the Constitution, the time will come when medicine will organize into an undercover dictatorship. To restrict the art of healing to one class of men and deny equal privileges to others will constitute the bastille of medical science. All such laws are un-American and despotic… The Constitution of the Republic should make special provisions for Medical Freedom as well as Religious Freedom.”

Whether you support medical interventions like vaccines and chemotherapy, we all share a common belief that American citizens should never be forced to undergo treatment against their will. But corrupt politicians – and the corporate interests that sponsor them – have been actively fighting to strip you of your fundamental rights.

From medical kidnapping to mandatory vaccinations and stay at home orders, our public servants have betrayed us. Those meant to serve the people have taken it upon themselves to strip us of the very freedoms that define us.

It’s time to fight back.

That’s why we created the United Medical Freedom Super PAC “UMFSP.” We believe that it’s time to end the totalitarian reign of fascist leaders and authoritarian mandates. It’s time that our government started working FOR the people instead of against them. And it’s time that the politicians in the pocket of Big Pharma are kicked out of office.

>> Learn More About the UMFSP here.

We will win this fight for health freedom. :)
Yours in health and liberty,

mail

P.S. Remember the words of Benjamin Franklin: “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

As long as we have a voice, we have a choice.
Make your voice heard today!
