Gut Bacteria and Hypertension

JINAN, CHINA - A study in the journal Microbiome evaluated the gut bacteria of participants to determine if there might be a relationship between a lack of diversity of gut bacteria and hypertension (high blood pressure. ) The study had 41 people with ideal blood pressure levels, 99 individuals with hypertension, and 56 people with prehypertension.

The scientists determined that in the participants with prehypertension or hypertension, there was a reduction in the diversity of gut bacteria. In particular bacteria such Prevotella and Klebsilla which tended to be overgrown.

Since having a healthy level of varied gut bacteria has been indicated to beneficial to many other aspects of healthy, you might want to consider trying to maintain healthy levels.

Below are recommendations to maintaining healthy levels of gut bacteria:

Eat Lots of Vegetables, Legumes, Beans and Fruit, Fermented Foods and Whole Grains

Have a healthy day,

Jimi,
My teenage kids are notorious for trying to get out of eating their greens at dinnertime. At home, I’ve thwarted many clever attempts to bury, hide and feed kale and broccoli to our golden retriever.

Because they’re young, they live in the moment, blissfully unaware that eating the leafiest and darkest of greens will one day help protect their hearts, preserve their memory and help them age well.

The importance of eating your greens is more than a mom-ism—it’s irrefutable science shouting for our attention… and the connection between green, chlorophyll-rich plant foods and the rate of aging is now too strong to ignore.*

Think back to early science class when you learned about chlorophyll and photosynthesis—the life-giving transformation of sunlight into cellular energy in plants.

Chlorophyll is the bright green plant pigment that results from the process. It’s the lifeline that carries oxygen throughout the plant, just as red blood cells carry oxygen in humans. In fact, plant chlorophyll and human red blood cells are nearly identical.

In humans, this green molecule can be the difference between aging, and aging well. So, now that you’ve matured, it’s more important than ever that you make greens part of your daily menu.
Eat your greens—why it’s not too late to reap the benefits
Chlorophyll is brimming with powerful, age-fighting vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that can improve your health in a variety of powerful ways no matter how old you are:
  • Boost brain function – A study published in Neurology revealed that seniors who had daily helpings of leafy green veggies showed a decrease in cognitive decline compared to participants who did not eat greens or ate them infrequently.*
  • Detox the body – Research suggests the green therapeutic properties can help cleanse cells, blood and the liver of impurities by promoting the body’s natural purification process. It supports production of enzymes that bind to and flush out toxins, including heavy metals. ***
  • Neutralize cell-ravaging free radicals – The Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University reports that chlorophyllin—the supplement form of chlorophyll—has shown the ability to decrease oxidative damage and help protect cell DNA.*
If you think it’s too late to start getting more greens into your diet, it’s not!

Nobody Ever (N)SAID You Weren’t Warned

In almost every medicine cabinet all over the States, you’re likely to find a mondo-bottle of NSAIDs, or Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs.

You might know them by their street names – ibuprofen, aspirin, aleve, etc. They’re our little modern miracles that we pop when there’s a headache on the horizon, as a preventive hangover measure, after working out to ease muscle soreness, to calm a fever, if you’ve got an arthritis flare up…

And given the side effects of harsher drugs and the ways in which we poison ourselves with toxins all day long, you probably hadn’t even considered what something as seemingly harmless as Motrin might be doing to your body.

Because we know that inflammation lies at the heart of most of the modern world’s chronic illness, from mental health conditions to digestive issues, NSAIDs are used as a broad solution to so many of our problems.

NSAIDs work by prohibiting the production of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation. Although warning labels on bottles and doctor’s recommendations always stress not to use them for long periods of time (usually no more than 10 days in a row), people tend to disregard this advice, or worse, take them every third day or so for years on end.

In addition to some of the well-known risks of concentrated and consistent NSAID use, like heightened risk of cardiovascular disorders and bleeding problems, scientists and researchers are exploring the effect they have on the rest of our bodily systems – particularly our gut microbiomes.

Because the irony of taking anti-inflammatory pills is that if you take them too often, you actually worsen inflammation.
image

Let’s examine what an unchecked NSAID habit can do to your gut...

How You Risk Your Gut When You Solve a Problem with NSAIDs

Anything that you swallow affects the composition of your microbiome – that ought to go without saying.

NSAIDs have been studied and shown to disproportionately feed certain bacterial populations in the microbiome – like Acidaminococcaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Propionibacteriaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Puniceicoccaceae, and Rikenellaceae – leading to dysbiosis and a waterfall of consequences. And some of these bacteria, like Enterobacteriaceae, house a whole host of disease-causing bacteria (like E. Coli and salmonella.)

And not all NSAIDs are created equally – ibuprofen will affect your gut bacterial profile differently than, say, aspirin.

But they share an important function in common: as we hinted at earlier, they block body chemical production that causes inflammation, specifically prostaglandins. These chemicals are messengers that travel around the body noting places to inflame.

They also protect the stomach lining from being eaten away from stomach acid and serve to maintain a natural order of things in the digestive system.
image

NSAIDs don’t allow an enzyme called Cox-1 to produce prostaglandins, which ultimately can lead to ulcers and stomach bleeding.

If that disruption of chemical production doesn’t lead to ulcers, it’s at the very least the culprit behind gastrointestinal distress experienced after ingesting NSAIDs. Gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea are all commonly reported side effects that are a result of the stomach lining being damaged.
And while we’re talking about stomach and intestinal lining damage… what else could come up but heartburn, caused by over- or under-present levels of stomach acid and an irritated esophagus?

Fortunately, we aren’t helpless, and we don’t have to flush our aspirin and ibuprofen down the drain – NSAIDs can be effective solutions for temporary discomfort…

As long as we don’t rely on their magical powers for every twinge of pain.

For example…

Ayurvedic Medicine Alternatives to NSAIDs

Among longer-term solutions to fight inflammation – like healing your leaky gut and eliminating fast foods and processed foods – there are some short-term solutions you could try looking into.

For example, there are a few natural solutions in the Ayurvedic tradition that serve to restore the imbalance in Pitta, the element of fire. Ayurvedic doctors use, most often, four spices to combat inflammation:

  • Curcumin (or turmeric): Turmeric has been shown to modulate inflammation pathways and reduce inflammatory markers in the body.
  • Boswellia (frankincense): As an adaptogen, this herb has many balancing benefits as well as anti-inflammatory properties. It’s been known to reduce pain, improve function, and ease arthritic-type maladies.
  • Ginger: The complex phytochemistry of ginger is what gives it its special powers. Among so many other things, ginger soothes digestion and irritated inflammation channels.
  • Black Pepper: Black pepper can reduce the presence of high-sensitivity proteins that ease inflammation and its effects over time, as well as aiding in the absorption of the above herbs.

And beyond the idea of alternative solutions, sometimes the pain we’re experiencing can be managed mentally and sometimes it can be managed topically – an ice pack on a sore back rather than a pill. A break from noise and light for softening a headache. A hot shower, hot mug of tea with a little whiskey, a warm blanket, and an extended night’s sleep for knocking out a fever.

But no matter what, always err on the side of LESS NSAIDs whenever you can! Give your gut a chance to heal.

High CRP Level Threatens Sight

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

Doctors have known for some time that an elevated level of C-reactive protein (CRP) indicates increased risk for heart disease, but research suggests that this measure threatens your eyesight as well.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that causes loss of vision in the eye’s center field (the macula), which is caused by damage to the retina. AMD is the main cause of visual impairment in people over the age of 60.

Special: New Aging Research Reveals Key to Long, Healthy Life

Although this condition generally does not cause total blindness, it is devastating to daily life because people who suffer from AMD cannot read, drive, watch television, play cards, or enjoy many other activities.

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health evaluated data from 2,147 people, matching the CRP blood levels of 647 people with AMD with those without it.

They found that those with high CRP levels had a 50% higher risk of age-related macular degeneration.

They also found that risk of neovascular macular degeneration, which is an early stage of the disease, was nearly doubled, according to the study published in JAMA Ophthalmology. The number of people affected by AMD is expected to reach 11 million in 2020.

Following a heart-healthy lifestyle can lower your CRP level. This includes losing weight, exercising, quitting smoking, reducing stress, and getting enough sleep. This will not only help you conquer heart disease, but also protect your sight as well.

It's hard to vibe with "saving the soil" when you don't have much :-/
Live in an apartment, condo, or even most houses and you probably don't have much in the way of land to grow plants on.
But this is what we do here at Rebel Gardens :)
We figure out how we can grow food where we are.
We get involved in saving the soil using whatever we have.

This has been the theme this week and last. I have shared 2 resources with you and I want to make sure you saw them and have access to them:
Edible Backyard Summit - This amazing sounding free how-to series starts this coming Tuesday. If you sign up for the free showings you also get a great "preview" in the form of an ebook called Grow Where ever You Go. Check it out!
The NEED To Grow - This documentary tells the disturbing truth about our soil but also tells the optimistic solutions. I can't praise this documentary high enough, check it out and get ready to save the world.
Check out 1 or check out both but don't just do nothing. The reality is that you don't have to do big amazing things to be part of the solution. You just need to be one of a lot of people doing small things consistently. These are both great resources to help you do just that.
Save the soil, save the world.
Keep grow'n,
Jason
PS - Seeds keep coming in and most are back in stock in some capacity. Next week I'll do another special sale but have a lot more options available, so keep your eyes peeled :)

*-- Health Help with a Hearty Glass of Wine --*
First things first, a proper glass of wine is a 5-ounce pour. So when I say "moderate drinking", that means what is clinically considered to be healthy. For women, it's one glass a day and for men it's two.

Wine contains antioxidants that attack free radicals. White wine is going to be your go-to if you're looking for one that is high in antioxidants.

As we get older, our bones get more brittle. You can always increase your calcium intake by drinking milk...but that's not nearly as enjoyable as sipping on a glass of red wine. The silicon in red wine is great for your bone density and it also reduces your risk of osteoporosis.

Moderate consumption of wine - and alcohol in general - can prevent blood clotting. Wine acts as a natural blood thinner, breaking up any blood clots that could lead to a stroke. This lower risk of blood clotting is more beneficial to females than males. HOWEVER, light to moderate consumption may be good in preventing a stroke, heavy drinkers are more likely to have the opposite effect, resulting in a higher risk of heart attacks, not a lower risk.

Jimi,

For thousands of parents with vaccine-injured children, the '1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act' (NCVIA) conjures up sadness, betrayal of trust, disappointment and anger.

But what does the rest of the public think?

Most people don’t even realize the NCVIA exists! They are still under the rosy misconception that vaccines are “safe and effective” and that our legislators and public health officials would never do anything that would knowingly hurt America’s children.

We need to educate them.

And that’s why we are so excited to announce that 1986: The Act is OUT NOW! This is a new documentary by our good friend, Andy Wakefield, director of Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrope.

Watch the trailer here.

1986: The Act is a story of how the powerful force of a mother's intuition leads down the “rabbit hole” of lies and corruption surrounding the NCVIA. 1986: The Act forges head on into the important conversation and controversy surrounding this one-sided health policy that gave vaccine makers a multi-billion-dollar gift (so far) and immunity from prosecution.

Viewers will learn how “The Act” turned fairness and the US court system on its head. Touted at the time as a helpful, non-adversarial alternative to long, protracted court battles, it actually turned into anything but; where the vaccine- injured linger without help, parents rack up medical bills and wait years for monetary relief which seldom comes, and government lawyers take home fat paychecks for their efforts against families. This corrupt system ensures that consumers pay the tab and vaccine manufacturers laugh all the way to the bank.
  • If you are vaccine-injured, share the film with your friends and family.
  • If you have a vaccine-injured child, share it with other young parents who don’t know the dire, unintended consequences of vaccination.
  • If you care about humanity and justice, share it with your local, state and federal representatives, many of whom, incredibly enough, don’t know about “The Act” either and will be shocked to find out!
As advocates, we find ourselves at a crucial time for health freedom. We must use all the tools we have to educate others in our communities, including our lawmakers. The change starts with us.

1986: The Act is now available for rent, DVD, digital download & digital download/DVD combo!

Short on time? The film is now available in a series format for those who want to view chapter by chapter!

Please share this email far and wide!

To Your Health & Liberty,

Mediterranean Diet May Reduce PAD

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

About one in three people with coronary artery disease also develops peripheral artery disease (PAD), a narrowing of the body’s blood vessels that causes numbness and pain in the legs when walking.

Because the Mediterranean diet — which is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and healthy monounsaturated fats (like olive oil) — helps prevent heart disease, researchers wanted to find out if eating these foods would help treat PAD as well.

Special: Doctors Using Magnesium to Reverse Diabetes

The Spanish researchers followed 7,447 men and women, average age 67, for seven years. One group was given the Mediterranean diet along with extra-virgin olive oil; the second group also followed the Mediterranean diet, only with extra nuts; and the third group did not follow it, but they did receive counseling on a low-fat diet.

The study, published in JAMA, showed that the Mediterranean diet did lower risk for PAD and was the first study to show these results.

The information underscores the heart-healthy Mediterranean diet not only lowers heart disease and stroke risk, but also helps protect the rest of the body’s blood vessels.

Get Health Benefits From Sardines

By Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, MDs

"Life is like a box of sardines," declared English playwright Alan Bennett, author of "The History Boys," "and we are all looking for the key."

Well, if you’ve never managed to twist open the lid on a can of these little swimmers, maybe news of their many virtues will convince you.

ConsumerLab.com tested three popular brands of sardines and found they served up around 1,600 mg to 1,850 mg of the omega-3s DHA and EPA in every 3-ounce serving. That’s more than in a comparable serving of canned tuna.

In addition, sardines are very low in mercury; albacore "white" tuna contains 10 to 20 times higher levels.

Special: Get the ‘Master Key’ to Unlock Your Brain’s Potential and Tackle Cognitive Decline!

Sardines are also protein-rich. The brands tested contained 12-22 grams in each 3-ounce serving.

The health benefits are wide-ranging. DHA and EPA reduce inflammation, protect your heart and brain, and help joints move more easily.

The one caveat — which also applies to canned tuna — is that the arsenic levels in sardines, while safe, mean you should stick to one serving a day.

If you want to try out these tasty fish, you're in luck! Check out Dr. Mike's book "The What to Eat When Cookbook." You can substitute sardines for salmon in various recipes, such as the one for wild sockeye salmon en papillote, or add them to pasta dishes such as pasta with harissa-roasted cherry tomatoes and spinach.

Hi Jimi,

MIT and Harvard researchers have recently confirmed that chronic inflammation is not only linked to cancer but “...as many as one in five cancers are believed to be caused or promoted by inflammation.” (1)

Breaking this down further…

In 2019 alone, 606,880 people in the US lost their battle with cancer and 121,376 of those deaths were directly caused by chronic inflammation. (2)

It’s the greatest threat that virtually no one is talking about…

That is, until today…

My friend Dr. Elena Villanueva has committed her entire life to gathering the most cutting edge data to help support those suffering with the most challenging inflammation-related issues… believe me, she’s doing something most have never considered.

Sitting Raises Risk of Dying

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

Sitting for too long and being inactive has been known for some time to raise heart disease risk. But now research is finding that it also hikes the risk of heart failure — even in active men.

Special: Doctor Warns: Hospitals Aren’t as Safe as You May Think . . .

Researchers followed a racially diverse group of 84,170 men ages 45 to 69 who did not suffer from heart failure at the beginning of the study. After eight years, they reported the following data in the journal Circulation: Heart Failure:

  • Men with low levels of physical activity were 52% more likely to develop heart failure than very active men.
  • Men who spent five or more hours sitting (outside of work) were 34% more likely to develop heart failure than men who spent no more than two hours a day sitting, no matter how much they exercised.
  • Sitting at least five hours a day doubled heart failure risk in inactive men.
Although no women were included in the study, Cornell University researchers found that older women who sat for 11 hours a day were 12% more likely to die than their peers who spent four hours sitting or less.

This study also found the women were 27% more likely to die from coronary heart disease, 21% more likely to develop cancer, and 13% more likely to get cardiovascular disease, even if the women were physically active.
