Blue Light
Are your eyes feeling strained? Are you trying to wind down in the evening but just can't relax? You may be getting too much blue light.

What is blue light?

"Blue light has the most power among the spectrum of visible lights to affect your internal sleep-wake body clock called circadian rhythm.
Both natural and artificial blue light can boost your alertness and mental sharpness. But too much of it may keep you awake when your body needs to wind down." WebMD

With the rise in screen time, our exposure to blue light is at an all-time high. From mobile devises to TV, our over exposure in the evenings may be causing some unintended health consequences. Exposure to blue light suppresses the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that influences circadian rhythms. This is great when you take in the rays of from the sun upon waking up in the morning but, not when you are looking to get a good night's sleep.

Reducing our exposure to blue light in the evening can help our bodies to relax and have a deeper more restful sleep. As we have discussed before sleep is very important to healing. Also, many of us may be looking at computer screens all day long and this may also cause more stress on the eyes.

How can we reduce blue light exposure?

If you are looking to reduce your exposure to blue light later in the day, try these simple tricks.
  • See if your cell phone has a blue light reduction setting. Many have filters that can dramatically reduce the blue light emitted by your phone.
  • Check your computer monitor as well. Many newer ones have a blue light adjustment.
  • Try using red lights for night lights in your home. Red lights are much less likely to shift circadian rhythm and suppress melatonin.
  • Avoid screen time in the evening.
  • Look into blue blocking glasses. There are many brands on the market with high quality lenses such as Warby Parker and Felix Gray. Many report that they experience less eye stress with these glasses.
  • Get plenty of bright light, preferably from the sun, during the day, this can boost your ability to sleep well at night.
By making a few simple adjustments to your light exposure, you may experience better sleep and less eye strain and better sleep can mean better health.

Until next time. Make good choices and stay healthy! ?

Today was a sad day.

My wife ripped out pretty much our entire garden :-(

Everything was dying and probably rapidly becoming not safe to eat anyways.

I live in Oregon and the fires have made the outside toxic. It is like something out of a horror movie like the Mist.

Gardening, my kids playing outside... It's all dangerous and I shudder to think what the long term ramifications are going to be for people living through this.

We are praying for rain. Hopefully it helps control the fires and cleans out the air.

While the smoke is slowly spreading everywhere hopefully you are someone who has not been affected.

If you can plant a fall garden plant an extra vegetable for me :)

Get your certified organic seeds for 15% off here:

Keep grow'n,

PS - This has made me realize just how important indoor gardening is these days. More to come soon on microgreens and my hydroponics tests. Watch for those, but for now if you are lucky enough to have space and clean air grab some seeds on discount - https://www.amazon.com/gp/mpc/A3154HS9CTGJ2M

Jimi,
Intermittent fasting continues to be a popular health trend in 2020. Enthusiasts boast of losing weight and boosting metabolism, seeing clearer skin and feeling more mentally focused.
I am one of those enthusiasts who has been intermittent fasting for years, and I will personally attest to the dramatic difference it has made in my life.
Have you thought about trying intermittent fasting but think you will feel hungry or worry that your metabolism will stall? Or perhaps you have tried it but found it too hard.
If so, please keep reading because I have great news to share with you today.
IT’S NOT STARVATION… IT’S LIFE PRESERVATION
I had the pleasure of interviewing Jason Fung, MD, a world-renowned expert on intermittent fasting. And as a kidney specialist, he also knows firsthand the damaging effects of insulin resistance.
Dr. Fung explains how humans instinctively fast during times of illness or food scarcity.
If you feel like you’re “starving” because you skipped breakfast… rest assured you’re not. It’s merely your cravings for sugar and salt trying to overrule biology.
Remarkably, intermittent fasting is one of the best ways to “slow” the pace of aging… and eating for the sake of eating is a sure way to accelerate aging!
To reap the rewards, you must fast for at least 10-12 hours regularly to fully deplete stored calories—16 hours is ideal for a metabolic shift.
As research points out, periods of fasting naturally contribute to a restriction of calories over time. And calorie restriction has been shown to support heart health, metabolic function and healthy insulin levels.*
Some studies reveal calorie restriction may even activate sirtuins—proteins that contribute to longevity.*

My husband, Sayer Ji, and I had the pleasure of watching the world-changing documentary, Thrive, not too long ago… and it shot to the top of our "watch this to learn what's up" movie recommendation list. ?
So, you can imagine my excitement when we were invited to be interviewed for the sequel, Thrive II: This Is What It Takes. ?
Sometimes you meet people who not only "get it," but inspire growth, and filmmakers, Kimberly and Foster Gamble, are this in spades.
At long last, Thrive II is available September 26, 2020, and the timing couldn't be better. The information in this film, the energy behind its creation, and its message of empowerment will whisk the collective forward, like some magical carpet of enlightenment, into the next chapter of reclamation.
Sayer and I both feel that truth held with love is what awakens us to our nature… and that's exactly what this film promises. ?

Check out the trailer today and get ready to watch on September 26th.

*-- Tackle Those Fall Allergies --*
First things first, check your weather daily. There are so many resources to check the weather. From watching the news, to instantly checking a weather app any way you choose will tell you the pollen count for your area based on your zip code.

If it's really high, make sure to restrict what you're doing outside. If you want to go out, try to do it in the middle of the day when the pollen levels are at their lowest. If you have to go out at other times of the day, when you get home, make sure to put your clothes in the washer and take a shower to make sure that any pollen attached to you won't spread in your home.

Make sure to vacuum your floors regularly. This will help remove any allergens that may be trapped inside your home. If possible, get a vacuum with a double-sealed HEPA filter. This will prevent the dirt and allergens from being blown back out into your environment if they get trapped into the vacuum.

Make sure to change your furnace and air conditioning filters every 3 months (or as directed by the brand you're using). Take the time to clean the furnace and air conditioner at the end of each season as well if possible. HEPA filters are great, they can remove at least 99% of pollen from the air in your home. HEPA filters are not cheap, but depending on what you need for your home, there are some alternatives for less expensive prices. Check with your local hardware store for best comparisons.

It may seem like a lot of this is "Stay Indoors" but honestly, that's not the case. Below are some facts that can help you to determine the best time to be out and about during this season!

- Rain washes pollen away, but remember that pollen counts can soar after a rainfall, so watch the counts, but enjoy the wash away while it lasts!

- On a day with no wind, airborne allergens are grounded so breathing is easier for you!

- Ragweed pollen, a huge culprit of allergies, as well as tree and grass pollen thrive during cool nights and warm days. So remember that if the temperature stays cool the next day, allergies are going to be easier to deal with!

- Sometimes bonfires, or even fireplaces, can cause allergies due to the pollen being attached to the wood. However if you stay out of the direct smoke from the fire and in the opposite direction of the wind, you should be able to enjoy a bonfire during the fall months!

Hi Jimi,

If your liver shuts down, you’ll only have a day or two to survive.

This organ is so vital that it’s responsible for at least 500 functions in the body.

And yet, we don’t hear about our liver often… or enough.

In fact, when was the last time you heard about fatty liver disease?

1 in 3 people have this condition and it's the precursor to almost all chronic diseases.

That includes heart disease, cancer, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, thyroid issues, and many more.
So today, I want to share with you what my friend Jonathan Landsman is going to tell the world about it in his upcoming Fatty Liver Docu-Class.
Jonathan has been a leader in the natural health field for over 30 years now — and known for being controversial.

You do not want to miss this life-changing event especially if…

  • You've been diagnosed with Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
  • You have chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, etc
  • You're overweight or obese
  • You have Hepatitis (A, B, or C)
  • You have cirrhosis
  • You're on the liver transplant list
And here’s a little surprising fact:

One of the other 23 experts Jonathan interviewed said that most people are walking around with just 10% to 20% liver function!

No wonder so many people are so sick these days!

So register here and learn more about taking care of the largest solid organ in your body.

To your health,

Sarah Otto

P.S. I came across a new study from the UK — they revealed that your risk of being hospitalised with coronavirus doubles if your liver contains over 10% fat. Save your seat in this class so you can love your liver a little better.

  • Victory! Stopped a Monsanto pesticide: We made history this year! We had one of the most important legal victories ever against pesticides and GMO crops. As a result of our lawsuit, a federal court overturned the approval of Monsanto's toxic pesticide dicamba. The Court cited “enormous and unprecedented damage” caused by dicamba in the last few years. This is a huge victory for farmers, wildlife, and the environment!
  • Huge win for the bees: Last year our legal team scored a groundbreaking legal victory when a federal court concluded that the EPA approval of dozens of neonicotinoid pesticides was illegal. As a result of our lawsuit, a dozen of these bee-killing pesticides were taken off the market! And we’re currently part of many more legal actions and legislative campaigns to further protect bees and Monarch butterflies.
  • Protecting our children from toxic pesticides: After studies found that the pesticide chlorpyrifos harms children's brain development, we wrote, lobbied, and passed a bill that banned it in Hawaii, and secured similar bans in California and New York. Now we're working hard to replicate these wins in other states and to pass a bill at the federal level.
  • New lawsuit to stop glyphosate: In March 2020, CFS filed a legal challenge to stop the toxic pesticide glyphosate (the main chemical used in Roundup). CFS is representing front-line farmworkers who are disproportionately harmed by exposure to glyphosate. We’ll be up against the government and major corporations as the case continues in the coming year.
mail

  • New lawsuit to save GMO food labeling: In August 2020, CFS filed another groundbreaking lawsuit against USDA challenging the GMO labeling regulations. The new regulations do not mandate on-package labeling, and instead allow for digital “QR” codes that must be scanned with a smartphone. Our lawsuit argues that this discriminates against tens of millions of Americans without smartphones and that all have the right to know how our food is produced.
  • Stopping GMO salmon: CFS was in court again last month against the FDA and the world’s largest GMO salmon company with the goal of overturning the approval of this first-ever GMO animal. If GMO salmon gets onto our shelves, it will start a domino effect that could be the end of our natural, wild fisheries. So we're challenging every aspect of the FDA approval and won’t stop until we can declare victory.
mail

  • Victory! Exposing factory farms: CFS and allies barred Iowa, North Carolina, and Kansas from enforcing new laws that criminalize investigations at factory farms, slaughterhouses and in even some puppy mills, nursing homes, and daycare centers! These are victories for all those who support humane treatment of farm animals and safe food!
  • Shutting down mega-CAFO dairies: CFS has shut down polluting factory farms in Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington – and we’re pushing every day to shut down even more!
  • Pressuring Tillamook Creamery: We got more than 50,000 people to demand that Tillamook Creamery support local family farms and not source from polluting factory farms. We’re currently advancing the next stage of this campaign. They’re feeling the pressure — your letters make a difference!
mail

  • Win for our oceans: CFS is one of the only organizations fighting industrial fish farms, also known as aquaculture facilities, and we scored a landmark victory protecting our oceans and fishing communities. In August 2020, the court held illegal new regulations that would have allowed large-scale industrial aquaculture operations offshore in U.S. federal waters. Another victory!
  • Stopping shellfish aquaculture: CFS won a case to stop polluting commercial shellfish aquaculture operations in Washington State, a huge win for the environment and iconic species like salmon and orcas.

Organic? Check? Organ Health? Check? Organelle Health? Wait…

Fatigue is such a broad umbrella, getting to the bottom of it sometimes involves your doctor giving you the third degree.

But that’s because generalized fatigue can be caused by any number of colluding or omitting factors. Not enough of this, too much of that, too much this without enough of that to balance it out…

Do we all have to be doctors ourselves in order to manage our own health?

Well, no. But we should have a basic understanding of how our bodies work and which areas to service in order to cause a ripple effect of whole body health.

Some of the choices before us are pretty intrinsic – or at least should be obvious given the state of American health and the public exposure of processed food chemicals – like choosing to eat organic, whole foods over junk food.

Some of our choices are influenced by the information we seek out ourselves. We learn that we need to nourish and support our liver, for example, because we need it to be working at top capacity in order to filter toxins out of our system.

If we don’t do those things, we know that our energy will suffer. Eating a burger meal from a fast food joint makes us tired, but eating a well-rounded meal packed with nutrition does not. Feeling hungover when we drink too much and our livers are overloaded with the job of flushing those toxins out means we never regain full energy that day.

But sometimes, we have to get even more granular. Cellular, even. Or smaller.

Like right down to the mitochondria, the organelle in our cells that’s responsible for empowering each individual cell with energy so that it can travel throughout our body, lending energy to our human functions.

Mitochondria are little energy manufacturers that convert everything from the food you eat to the air you breathe into energy.

When we find ourselves in the midst of an exhaustion epidemic, and we’re eating well and paying attention to our organ health, we might have to think smaller.

Let’s examine some of the ways we can support our mitochondrial health…

Eat Good Fat

If you’ve ever tried to do the keto or paleo diets, you know exactly how good fat can be for you! Trans fats are the real problem – but fat from nuts? Chicken fat? Avocado fat? Olive oil fat?

Your body likes it! Your mitochondria mainly eats fatty acids and carbohydrates, but converting fat into energy creates fewer free radical byproducts (reactive molecules containing one or more unpaired electrons that increase oxidative stress in the body).

Try to focus more on including fat from whole foods and carbs from vegetables (like crucifers) to keep your mitochondria well fed.

Try Intermittent Fasting

Not only does intermittent fasting help suppress the production of more free radicals, but it encourages autophagy, the process by which your cells assess the state they’re in, borrow components from each other, flush damaged cells, and reconstruct themselves.

During the autophagy process, mitophagy also occurs. This is the process by which the body determines which mitochondria are damaged beyond repair, and disposes of them, allowing fresh new mitochondria to continue working.

Do High Interval Intensity Training

Your mitochondria get bigger and stronger when you exercise, but especially when you do HIIT.

As you build more muscle, your body will create more and bigger mitochondria to power those muscles. This type of exercise specifically helps cells produce more protein for mitochondria, and benefits their health and longevity as it benefits your health and longevity.

Add Antioxidants to the Mix

We talked about how sometimes, mitochondrial byproducts can be free radicals, and that free radicals can lead to oxidative stress.

Life so often comes full circle, because oxidative stress can then damage mitochondria.

Keep your diet full of antioxidants to help prevent oxidative stress! Eat plenty of colorful foods – pumpkin, eggplant, berries, red wine, leeks, mangoes, apricots, spinach, seafood, and more.

Don’t Let the Toxins Get Them

Mitochondria are especially sensitive to toxins… so when you’re thinking about another reason not to smoke cigarettes, or overindulge in alcohol, or pop NSAIDs when you’ve got a mild headache, here’s a big one.

You want your liver to be able to shove toxins towards the exit, so it needs to be functioning uncompromised. Plus, you want to limit the exposure your mitochondria have to toxins in the first place.

Mitochondrial health is deeply complex, as are the rest of your energy-making, storing, and using systems.

Dr. Shojai and Nick Polizzi, who just released their “Exhausted!” docu-series exploring how we even let exhaustion become the epidemic it is today, recognized that there’s simply too much to learn without a streamlined and dedicated way to learn it…

So they created The 7-Week Energy Reset Masterclass.

In 7 weeks and a total of 7 hours, the brightest experts in the functional health industry with the most up-to-date science explain not only how your body produces and stores energy, but what can go wrong and how to prevent it.

7 weeks might feel like a commitment you’re not ready for, but the truth is, it’ll pass regardless of whether or not you spend it learning how to get your energy back.

If you want to take control of your fatigue and get out in front of your exhaustion, click here and see what the class is all about.

Heart Calculators Too Pessimistic

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

Most of the “risk calculators” that doctors use to gauge their patients’ chances of suffering a heart attack appear to significantly overestimate the result, and could lead to overtreatment, such as the overuse of statin drugs, research shows.

Clinicians commonly use standardized risk assessment systems, or algorithms, to decide whether someone needs to take daily aspirin and cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Special: You May Have Heart Attack Risk Factors . . . And Not Know It.

To check the accuracy of each one of five risk calculators, investigators compared the number of predicted versus the number of actual heart attacks and strokes for more than 4,200 people, ages 50 to 74. All of the subjects were heart disease-free at the beginning of the 10-year study.

The researchers discovered that the risk score predictors had overestimated risk by 37% to 154% for the men, and 8% to 67% in women. Among these misleading calculators was the one used by the American Heart Association.

While these automatic tools can work for some people, those who fall into the “borderline” category are too likely to be prescribed statin drugs or other treatments.

This study, published in Annals of Internal Medicine, provides proof that no computer program can equal an experienced cardiologist’s evaluation.

Hi Jim,

One of our friends struggled with inexplicable weight gain for 16 years…

She ate super clean foods and exercised up to 6 times per week…

Yet, it was impossible for her to get rid of her belly fat, "solid" figure and overall puffiness.

Feeling hopeless and frustrated, she started to suspect there’s something more happening in her body…

With the help of our experts, she found out the truth that set her free:

You see, a lot of the foods and products she was using at that time contained dangerous doses of fat-causing toxins…

This hijacked her adrenals and made her store every single bit of food she ate…

And predisposed her to serious diseases in the future.

After she removed some of the toxin sources from her everyday foods and products, she was finally able to lose fat fast, after 16 years of struggle.

Sarah is not alone. My belief is that almost every American is affected by the same fat-causing toxins…

And the "obesity epidemic" is nothing more than a "toxin epidemic".

Our experts agree that you should avoid these toxins if you want to experience easy & rapid weight loss:

The food causing “silent damage” to your gut…
You’ve probably heard of Celiac Disease. It is the most serious — and often life-threatening — sensitivity to grains that contain gluten.

But the media and medical profession are obsessed with celiac disease, as if it were the only issue with bread. It is not: BREAD IS NOT THE STAFF OF LIFE, IT’S THE WORST FOOD WE EAT.

I’ve been bringing up this surprise message for nearly 40 years!

Many who suffer this condition cannot consume even the slightest speck of wheat without severe digestive pain... and other embarrassing symptoms. This leads many people to believe as long as you can eat bread without belly problems — then you must be in the clear... no harm done!

Do not be fooled by this dangerous myth! We’re talking WHEAT ALLERGY, not just gluten sensitivity.

Wheat allergy is very common indeed and we should all be looking for suitable alternatives. When I started out in the 1970s, there wasn’t much: rice and tapioca “bread” and the like! That was about it.

And unfortunately, most “gluten-free” bread alternatives could be even MORE HARMFUL than the real thing!

BUT TODAY THERE ARE MANY GOOD ALTERNATIVE BREADS. You can make your own, quickly, cheaply and easily. That’s why nutrition expert Kelley Herring has put in years of hard work to resolve this dietary dilemma. WE HAVE HER ALTERNATIVE-BREADS BOOK IN OUR KITCHEN and Viv makes keto-bread almost every week, using all kinds of seeds and flours. And Kelley’s recipes are tasty too!

Today, I share the fruits of her hard work with YOU!

Discover how easy it is to enjoy the breads you love… AND be well, too!

To Your Good Health,

Cruciferous Vegetables' Life-Saving Power

By Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, MDs

The English language is full of eccentric words that start with the letter C: cahoots (conspiring together secretly) and callipygian (a well-shaped backside) are just two examples.

But in our book, "cruciferous" tops the list. This word, used for a group of nutrition-packed vegetables, comes from a Latin term that describes their cross-shaped flowers — but provides no clue about which veggies fall into the category.

Special: Are You Eating Too Much Protein?

Now, a study in the British Journal of Nutrition adds to the evidence that what's in this hard-to-pronounce and harder-to-spell category can save your life.

First the list (we bet there are some surprises), then the benefits.

Cruciferous vegetables include: arugula, bok choy, broccoli, broccoli rabe, broccoli Romanesco, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, Chinese broccoli, Chinese cabbage, collard greens, daikon, garden cress, horseradish, kale, kohlrabi, komatsuna, land cress, mizuna, mustard seeds and leaves, radishes, rutabaga, tatsoi, turnips roots and greens, wasabi, and watercress.

The researchers found that older women (median age 74) who've been eating the equivalent of 10.5 ounces of cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, or broccoli weekly (2.5 ounces more than one serving) have a 46% lower risk of abdominal aortic calcification compared to women who ate only 3.5 ounces of those veggies weekly.

Abdominal aortic calcification is an indicator of blood flow to your lower extremities and a predictor of serious coronary events like heart attack and peripheral artery disease.

Now that you know which veggies pack this powerful benefit, you can make sure to get your weekly servings.

Hi Jimi,
I don’t like to make waves. Heck, I was raised in a small town in Minnesota. So I’m not into drama. But when I discovered new information while researching my latest book, I couldn’t stay silent any longer.
That’s why I worked with my team to film a documentary about a hidden chemical that is all around us. This single chemical impacts your thyroid and may be to blame for your symptoms.
This was information so important I couldn’t wait to share it. You’re invited to watch the world premiere of the series. It airs on Sepember 24th. Click here to reserve your spot now.
Videos are a fun and entertaining way to reach a lot of people. It’s my aim to give you new ways to gain better thyroid function, and to do so in a way that’s fun to watch. The research is based on newly revealed scientific data plus 100,000+ patient visits. Up to 70% or more of people who get the right guidance & dietary strategies can feel better and regain thyroid function. You can regain your full vibrant health!
In fact, here’s what you’ll discover in 7 episodes. Think of these as 7 excellent reasons to RSVP now.
1. What exactly is the invisible ingredient? Why might it be a problem for you?
2. Beauty Products - What if your beauty products are making your thyroid medication not work properly? There are hidden ingredients you should look out for. Don’t worry, you can still look beautiful and use products that are safe.
3. Salt. Why does it make us sick? Don’t we need salt to live?
Why not all salts are created equal. How to choose salts that are safe for your thyroid.
4. Supplements. Finding supplements without the hidden chemical can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Shocking amounts found in multivitamins! How to safely shop for the safest blends.
5. Seafood. So many people are told to eat sea vegetables for their thyroid health, and it drives me nuts because it’s causing serious harm. This doesn’t mean you have to give up seafood. You just have to know which ones are safe to eat.
6. Dairy and eggs. You’ve probably heard they are bad for you. But what if eggs and dairy aren’t the ‘bad’ guys? The answer may shock you as much as it did me.
7. Gluten. You’ve heard for years that bread is ‘bad’ for you. Discover how to sort fact from fiction when it comes to the evils of gluten. And how you can enjoy bread guilt-free.
I know that you’ll walk away learning so much from this series. I can’t wait to share it with you. Please click here and reserve your spot now.
To vibrant health,

Dr. Alan Christianson

The Aging Gut: A Lifelong Profile of Your Microbiome

As Robert Frost so eloquently put it many years ago, “nothing gold can stay.”

True as it was in Frost’s poem – ”So Eden sank to grief, so dawn goes down to day” – the sentiment holds up against our experiences within the natural world all around us, as well as the natural world inside of us.

During the height of the pandemic, we were advised that our most vulnerable citizens would be the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.

That’s because as you age, the systems in your body naturally wear down, and the accumulation of years of toxins and damage makes your immune system less viable and more vulnerable.

Knowing what we know about the immune system’s relationship with the gut, we could theorize that the gut’s microbial composition evolves in such a way that its immense power is diluted and not helpful for maintaining immune system efficacy.

Fortunately, we don’t have to theorize.

Through diligent and focused research, scientists have learned that typically, the microbiome goes through several cycles during the lifespan of a human being.
image

Although there are plenty of things we can do to alter and repair damaged intestinal joints, increase stomach acid production, and rebalance dysbiosis in the bacterial composition of our guts…

That work requires consistency, determination, testing, and cooperation with a specialist.

For the most part, if you’re not doing the work, the gut goes through several solid stages of development.

Let’s take a look…

Life in the Womb

This is the time when your body begins forming your gut’s microbiome, and it’s entirely based on the behavior of your mother.

There is still a hardy debate about just how much the gut flora is affected by individual health decisions made by your mother, but we do know that they all have some affect.

For example, antibiotic use, a processed diet rather than a whole foods diet, and lifestyle choices of the mother all feed her (and baby’s) internal systems and create bacterial colonies.
image
For a long time, it was decided in popular science that the womb was a sterile environment.

However, recently there have been studies identifying bacterial communities in the placenta, amniotic fluid, and meconium.

Although more research is certainly required, it would appear that decisions made during pregnancy do affect the future composition of an infant’s microbiome.

Post Birth

It’s fairly well known among functional medical practitioners that a baby’s first few years of life can have a critical effect on the gut’s microbiome.

From the method of birth – vaginal or c-section – to the choice to breastfeed or use formula, and even whether or not the baby was born full-term or preterm, all play into the microbial make-up of their little, tiny guts.

When babies are born vaginally, they’re swabbed by the bacterial colonies in the vaginal canal and are thus exposed to the bacteria they need to form healthy and diverse gut flora. (Even born via c-section, some doctors are beginning to swab the baby’s face with vaginal canal bacteria to keep them exposed.)

Breastfeeding has a similar effect on formulating the composition of the microbiome.

And being born full-term obviously gives a baby the full benefit of the longest exposure to the mother’s bacterial colonies as possible.

During the first two to three years of life, babies’ gut microbiomes are high in Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. These bacterial families are ideal for helping the baby build strong defenses and gain weight.

Adult Life

After the incredibly formative first three years of life, fluctuations in the microbiome generally stabilize.

Your medication use, intake of processed foods, level of physical activity, quality and variety of whole foods eaten, and lifestyle all contribute to your baseline microbial composition.

That baseline is pretty tough to change – that’s why when we talk about healing the gut, we talk about doing work and making serious (if incremental) changes.

Building strong habits, and keeping them for a long time, and getting rid of unhelpful ones as fast as possible are crucial to maintaining the “default setting” of your gut microbiome.

Old Age

As you advance in years, the microbial integrity of your digestive tract weakens. The microbial population becomes less diverse, and resultant issues become likelier – like leaky gut syndrome, for example, or the overpopulation of harmful bacteria at the expense of beneficial bacteria.

Older people also tend to take more medication than younger, which tends to indiscriminately kill bacteria in the gut, whether good or bad.

Lifestyle, exercise, and diet considerations should carry extra weight as we advance in years.

Since a lot of the research regarding the microbiome is fairly new, or rather, only made its way into popular discourse in the last few decades, there’s not too much we can do about the way we were raised or what affected our biome growth.

But as always, today is a new day, and a new chance to feed our gut what it really wants!

Hi Jimi,

Today, I've got an aromatic and revitalizing tea recipe to share with you. You can whip it up in minutes, and all the ingredients are readily available at most grocery stores.

The star of this herbal tea is holy basil.

In Ayurvedic medicine, holy basil is classified as a Rasayana, or an herb that promotes overall health and boosts one's longevity. For three thousand years, tea from this herb has been prepared daily and is believed to help balance the chakras, or energy centers in the body.

Now, as it turns out, holy basil happens to be amazing for your hormones - what can I say, hormones are front and center on my mind right now :) As you might have already heard, we're hosting a worldwide webinar tonight on Holistic Hormone Secrets with Dr. Afrouz Demeri... and we've been working around the clock to make this a truly amazing event.

(If you haven't signed up yet, please make sure not to miss this. Every adult from 20 to 100 needs to know this vital information - I think tonight's talk is going to surprise you big time... sign up for the webinar here.)

Ok, back to the recipe!

Known as tulsi in India, holy basil is referred to as the "elixir of life" and can be found growing around the most revered Hindu shrines and temples. Energizing and delicious, this fix-all has found its way into many surrounding cultures, including those of Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

The herb has withstood the scrutiny of science as well. Holy basil is rich in antioxidants, is extremely detoxifying, regulates the adrenal system making it an effective anti-stress tonic, and possesses unusually high levels of the essential fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid, which is a proven anti-inflammatory.

Long story short, holy basil is good for you!

Holy Basil Tea Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1/4 tsp cumin
  • 1/4 tsp cloves
  • 1/3 tsp green cardamom, crushed
  • 1-2 tsp of tulsi (holy basil)
  • Wild honey to taste
Preparation

  • Put all ingredients in a small pot and simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Strain into a mug or cup and enjoy.
This tea can be enjoyed hot or iced, so you can harness the healing power of holy basil all year round!

A little secret: in our house, we love adding a little oat milk or almond milk to this brew, after the tea has steeped. It's so good!
