Hi Jimi,
Proponents tell us that soy can fight heart disease, hormone-related cancers, and osteoporosis — and that it’s a great plant-based source of protein.
But critics tell us that soy is a driver of breast cancer, thyroid problems, dementia, and deforestation.
So what’s the truth?
Here’s what you need to know about soy.
Yours for replacing confusion with clarity,
Ocean Robbins
P.S. Is soy good for you? And what are the health and environmental consequences of consuming it? Get the whole soy story here.

Follow Rx on Cardiac Drugs to the Letter

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

After a heart attack, patients are often shocked to discover that they must take multiple cardiac drugs.

While patients may want to get off these drugs as soon as possible, such a course is not always realistic. The reason so many people now survive their heart attacks is, in part, because we have better medications than ever before.

Special: Coronary Heart Disease: 5 Tips to Reduce Your Risk

Patients must take these drugs exactly as prescribed, and never make changes on their own without discussing them with their doctor first.

Here are five types of medications heart attack survivors might expect to be prescribed:

1. Antithrombotic Drugs. Most heart attacks are caused by blood clots. Antithrombotic drugs prevent that. (Thrombosis is the medical term for a blood clot.) There are two types of antithrombotics: antiplatelet agents, which prevent blood clots, and anticoagulants, which reduce the blood’s ability to clot.

2. Statins. These cholesterol-lowering drugs have proven to be a game-changer in heart attack treatment and prevention. While many people prefer not to take them, they are generally necessary after a heart attack.

3. Beta-blockers. This class of medication relaxes blood vessels, decreasing the heart’s workload. They also treat high blood pressure and irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias) and can help the heart remodel in a positive way.

4. ACE inhibitors/Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). In addition to lowering blood pressure, these drugs improve heart function and can aid in healthy remodeling. And research has shown that they increase survival after a major heart attack.

5. Calcium channel blockers. By reducing blood pressure and controlling the amount of calcium that enters the heart and arteries, these medications allow blood vessels to relax, decreasing the workload of the heart.

The 12 DIRTIEST Foods You're Currently Eating (and it's killing you)

By Kevin DiDonato MS, CES--Level 1 Certified Precision Nutrition and Cerfified Personal Trainer

frustrated-women-scale_sm.jpg
What is the number ONE thing that strikes fear into your heart?

Could it be spiders? Or poor health? Not fitting into your skinny jeans? Or dying a premature death?

Now, everyone has different fears – and they are all valid – that may cause your knees to buckle or for a mild to severe panic attack.

But when it comes to your health, what causes you the most fear?

Weight gain? Developing cancer? Having a heart attack?

Most of these fears are very common. And, each one of these health scares may be preventable.

You see, the foods you eat can dramatically change how your cells go from happy, healthy ones to unhealthy cells.

And, those foods – as healthy as you might think they are – could actually fall under the “dirty” category.

Not as in cleanliness or sugary or high fat.

But, dirty in a more sinister way…

The Dirtiest Foods

You have heard the term “clean” when it comes to eating.
fruit_veg_combo.jpg

This type of plan eliminates processed and refined foods, high sugar foods, or basically unhealthy foods, and focuses more on having foods that are closest to their natural source.

But, when we refer to “dirty” foods, we are referring to natural foods that have been exposed to high levels of pesticides, herbicides, or other harmful chemical agents.

And, these chemicals may lead to many changes in your body.

For example, some pesticides have been linked to cancer and other changes to your healthy cells.

So when you are buying foods – namely fruits and vegetables - you may be getting more than what you bargained for.

That’s where the “dirty” comes from.

Guess what? Some of your favorites may be “dirty”…

Here is a short list of some of the more common dirty foods:

apples_peanutbutter_200.jpg
Apples
– since apples are commonly exposed to external threats (fungus, insects, etc.), they are often treated with pesticides and herbicides in order to keep them fresh.

Strawberries – strawberries are routinely swarmed by both insects and fungus alike. They are commonly sprayed with both pesticides and herbicides, which could linger on the berries long after they get to the market – and to your house.

Cherry Tomato – these tiny veggies have been shown to contain a lot of pesticide residue – which makes them a very dirty food product. Simple tip to avoid the pesticide: grow your own or look for a local organic farmer or organic section in your favorite grocery store.

Cucumbers – another favorite topper for salad (with cherry tomatoes). Cucumbers may have trace amounts of many different pesticides. Peeling the skin may remove most of the pesticides (but who remembers to peel the skin from cucumbers?) and may reduce your pesticide exposure.

Coffee Beans – although not something typically eaten, coffee beans may contain high amounts of pesticides and other chemicals. There are many varieties of coffee beans that are not grown in this country, which could leave the possibility of your favorite bean being exposed to pesticides or other harmful chemicals.

Cherries--as great as cherries are for your health, they routinely make the list of one of the dirtiest foods. When tested, cherries contain 42 different pesticides of which, 5 were known carcinogens and 20 were considered hormone disruptors.

Spinach--the USDA Pesticide Data Program found a whopping 54 different pesticide residues, 7 of which are considered carcinogens. Even though they may be washed and cut before you get them, it's still a good idea to thorough wash your spinach treat with vinegar.

Celery--one of my favorite snacks to munch on is celery and peanut butter. That was until I discovered how may pesticides are found in celery. 64 different pesticide residues were found on celery, with 10 of them being carcinogens and 12 of them being known neurotoxins.

Sweet Bell Peppers--anothe popular salad topper, sweet bell peppers also rank pretty high on the list of pesticide-laden foods. After testing sweet bell peppers, they were found to contain up to 53 different pesticides with 3 of them being carcinogens and the rest a mix of hormone-disruptors and neurotoxins.

Potatoes--even though potatoes grow in the ground, doens't mean they aren't covered in chemicals or pesticides. Even though the numbers may be lower, 35 pesticides were detected on potatoes.
roasted%20potatoes.jpg

Peaches
--yes, they grow on trees which puts them at risk for different bugs and worms from devouring them. This would explain why the residue of 62 different pesticides was found on the peaches.

Blueberries--I love a good blueberry, but that may change knowing just how many different pesticides may be present in these tiny berries. There have been 52 different pesticides detected on blueberries, which could post a significant risk to your health.

*** Also noted, most of the pesticides and toxins found on these dirty foods also have a environmental impact attached to them. Most of these chemicals and pesticides may harm the honeybee populatiion.***

The Solution

In order to reduce your exposure to many pesticides and chemicals, you should thoroughly wash all your fruits and vegetables.

This may cut your exposure down significantly, however, not totally.

Your best bet for reducing your exposure is to shop for more organic produce that may have less exposure to chemicals and pesticides.

Foods like watermelon, cabbage, sweet potatoes, bananas, and Brussels sprouts (to name a few) may contain less chemical and pesticide residue, therefore making them better options.

For better health, take the necessary steps to reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals and pesticides by growing your own, or shopping organically.

Are Root Canals Dangerous? with Dr. Rouzita Rashtian, DDS

Root canals have become ubiquitous—almost 60 million are performed each year in the United States. “You need a root canal‟ is now almost as common as hearing “you need a filling.” It is the only treatment protocol available to retain a tooth that is diseased. Yet, just how safe are root canals? And, what is the science behind there being a non-toxic alternative to tooth extractions?

This week on The Broken Brain Podcast, Dhru dives deep into the topic of root canals with his own holistic dentist, Dr. Rouzita Rashtian. After personally experiencing the negative effects of mercury poisoning and a root canal, I’ve become increasingly fascinated by a more natural approach to dental care.

Dr. Rashtian believes that every individual deserves the highest quality in dental care. She practices utilizing modern health as a platform in helping patients understand the relationship between their mouth and overall health, in her Los Angeles dental office. Her focus is on holistic and biological dentistry; the philosophy recognizing the teeth and associated structures as part of the whole body. Because of this important relationship, she offers a plethora of healthy treatment options, stressing the use of non-toxic materials focusing on the impact that toxins and hidden bacteria can have on cumulative health. She uses minimally invasive techniques to preserve healthy tooth structure and incorporates laser technology and ozone therapy. She holds a SMART certification license through the prestigious International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. She is also a member of the Holistic Dental Association and the International Association of Mercury-Safe Dentists and Biomimetic Dentistry.

Throughout their talk, Dhru and Dr. Rashtian discuss what a root canal treatment involves, why you might end up needing one, and alternative treatment options. They also talk about why root canals can be problematic, what you should look out for if you've had one, and the four factors to avoid having a root canal in the first place.

Dr. Rashtian shares a few case studies from her practice where a root canal was the underlying cause of a patient’s health issue, and how she worked with them to restore their health.

Dr. Rashtian is extremely knowledgeable in all facets of dental care and helps us to understand how conventional dental practices can impact our health and what kinds of safer options we can pursue instead.

I hope you’ll tune in.

Wishing you health and happiness,
Mark Hyman, MD

Dr. Russell Blaylock, M.D., writes:

Most people are familiar with silver compounds as a powerful antibacterial agent. But few know that copper compounds and copper as a metal are equally, if not a more powerful, antibacterial agent.

In fact, in ancient times Roman soldiers used to save the filings when they sharpened their bronze spears (bronze is a copper and tin compound) to prevent wound infection. Copper kills all bacteria and viruses on contact.

While I don’t recommend using copper on open wounds (because it produces high levels of free radicals), it can be used to prevent the transfer of infections from surfaces.

Special: Top Doctors Say: Your Immune Function Now More Important Than Ever

For example, it has been shown that copper doorknobs, countertops, and bed railings do not transfer infections, and kill all bacteria and viruses on contact.

This prevents not only the spread of bacterial infections, but more importantly, the spread of viruses such as the flu.

Copper doorknobs and countertops, and copper coverings on other surfaces can reduce the transfer of infections. Stainless steel can’t be adequately sterilized, as it contains numerous microcracks and holes that contain bacteria that antiseptics cannot reach.

Another place bacterial infections are transferred from person to person is mattresses and pillows.

For example, studies have shown that hospital mattresses, no matter how well cleaned, still contain dangerous organisms that can be transferred between patients (nosocomial infections).

This is especially true for the bacteria Clostridium difficile, which can cause severe antibiotic-resistant infections.

You can purchase copper-impregnated mattresses, pillowcases, and mattress covers to prevent such infections. The covers and pillows would be especially important to use in hotels, where you are sleeping on mattresses that come in contact with hundreds of people, and are rarely cleaned.

Dr. Russell Blaylock, M.D., is editor of The Blaylock Wellness Report and a nationally recognized board-certified neurosurgeon, health practitioner, author, and lecturer.

Vitamin B3 Helps Protect Against Skin Cancer

AUSTRALIA—A recent study conducted at the Dermatology University of Sydney found that vitamin B3 could help prevent skin cancer.

It is noted that over two million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer every year.

The study included about 400 participants who were already diagnosed with skin cancer. They were either given vitamin B3 or a placebo daily for a full year.

The team found that one year later, those who consumed vitamin B3 were 23 percent less likely to have another skin cancer diagnosis.

According to the study leader,

“This is the first clear evidence that we can reduce skin cancers using a simple vitamin, together with sensible sun protection. We hope that these findings can be immediately translated into clinical practice.”

It is also noted that vitamin B3 can naturally be found in the following foods:
· Fish (tuna, salmon)
· Turkey
· Peanuts
· Mushrooms
· Green Peas
· Avocados

If you are interested in preventing skin cancer, you might want to consider adding foods rich in vitamin B3 to your daily diet.

Have a healthy day,

Home Blood Pressure Monitors Unreliable

By Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Mike Roizen, MDs

Bill Murray's rumored to have said: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me 350,000 times — you're a weatherman."

That's a lack of accuracy we often joke about, but for some things, being that far off the mark is more disturbing.

Special: Heart Surgeon's Secret to Healthy Blood Pressure

According to a recent Canadian study from the University of Alberta, home blood pressure monitors are 100 percent accurate only about 30 percent of the time.

That's not good, the researchers point out, because high blood pressure is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the world.

In the small but revealing study of 85 people with high blood pressure, researchers identified what causes the problems with the readings.

Occasionally, it's a person's inability to run the device properly. It also can be the one-size-fits-all design; the same cuff is used for both men and women, but in the study men's readings were more accurate. Arm shape and size can make the difference.

Nonetheless, if you have high blood pressure, it's important to keep track of how it's doing.

So how can you check the accuracy of your device?

First, bring your at-home monitor with you to your next doctor's visit and check it against the doc's machine.

Second, have your pharmacist instruct you in proper usage, and then try it out right there and compare its reading to the pharmacy's in-store blood pressure monitor. Almost all pharmacies now have stations where you can check your blood pressure.

#1 Healthy Fudge Brownie Recipe (stay guilt-free!)

I’ll be the first one to admit it:

I’ve developed a crazy baking obsession.

Ever since this #stayathome thing happened, I’ve poured all my energy into trying new recipes and perfecting my skills in the kitchen.

A great muffin, pie, or brownie can do a lot to bring people together and provide comfort in tough times…

And I love being the one to put a smile on people’s faces when they can enjoy a moment of joy and relaxation even after a long, stressful day.

Having said that, a baking habit can be a very dangerous thing.

No one wants to emerge from quarantine with an extra 20 pounds hanging off their tushie.

That’s why I’m so obsessed with creating healthier treats that can be enjoyed guilt-free.

After all, when your raspberry fudge brownies contain hidden superfoodslike:
  • Flaxseed: a cholesterol-fighting source of fiber and omega-3’s
  • Raw cacao: a rich source of mood-boosting magnesium and antioxidants
  • Almond butter: a delicious ingredient packed with heart-healthy fats and vitamin E
  • Coconut oil: an energy-boosting, blood-sugar regulating healthy fat
They are practically health food on a plate.

What’s not to love??

Being stuck at home isn’t so bad when you can make, bake, and enjoy yummy treats together.

Plus, there’s nothing like the promise of a warm, gooey brownie to get the hubby or kids to do what you asked of them, just that little bit more efficiently!

Hi Jim,

Glyphosate is a real problem.

We talked about it a bit in our film The Need To GROW, but it deserves more focus.

This herbicide, though a great shortcut for farmers and gardeners to kill weeds quickly, brings harm to much of the surrounding wildlife — including important pollinators!

Bees, butterflies, and other insects can get sick and even die from exposure to glyphosate. What’s more, glyphosate is shown to be a carcinogen harming people, too.

Though a lot of gardeners and even large farm operations use it, glyphosate (the active ingredient in Monstanto-Bayer's RoundUp) is getting a bad reputation all over the world. And for good reason. It’s rapidly being banned in more and more places — even here where I live in the US.

Thanks to the activists who’ve been shouting from the rooftops about this poison for years... certain areas are taking things into their hands locally to protect the environment and our health.

Although places have put up bans against glyphosate, people still don’t understand its harms, and they still insist on using it in secret.

For example: here in LA where I live, and where glyphosate is banned for city use, I happened to notice a city landscaper in my area spraying the chemical while on the job.

After contacting the city about this incident, they thankfully enforced the chemical ban even harder…and I was able to personally prevent further spread of this poison directly in my own neighborhood!

Maybe if all of us spoke up a little bit more, there would be more places that would eventually ban glyphosate. For now, here are a few examples of places that ban the herbicide, to hopefully inspire you to support initiatives and campaigns to do the same in your region.

  • CALIFORNIA.
Many places here in California have been cutting edge when it comes to certain environmental policies. Cities like Los Angeles and Oakland have strong restrictions of bans on glyphosate!

A growing list of counties and cities in California deem this chemical unacceptable for home and commercial use, especially since its health effects show possible harms to both people and wildlife.

  • KANSAS.
It may be surprising that in the Midwest— a sea of conventional farming and corn, where lots of the chemical is used— there are efforts to ban glyphosate underway!

Both the cities of Lawrence and Wichita in Kansas are aiming to cut down or completely eliminate glyphosate’s use. It’s a great thing considering so much of it is used in midwestern agriculture.

  • ALASKA.
Even in the far north, Alaska places a great importance on its natural beauty, wildlife, and the health of Alaskans, and enough to ban glyphosate.

Anchorage, Alaska put its best foot forward by banning glyphosate in all public parks and natural areas, especially when knowledge of glyphosate containing carcinogens came to light.

  • MANY OTHER COUNTRIES.
Though banning glyphosate is picking up speed in the US, many other countries around the world have already made sweeping efforts to block use of the herbicide on a national level.

Some of these countries include Thailand, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and European countries like Belgium, Italy, France, and the Netherlands.

The United States has yet still to impose a nationwide ban on glyphosate, and with so many politicians in the pockets of lobbyists, and Big Ag, it doesn't seem likely any time soon. Even though many cities, counties, and states are making their own efforts, our country still has a long way to go to fully protecting both nature and the public from the greed of big industry.

Want to get involved? We recommend getting connected with excellent glyphosate-fighting groups like Non-Toxic Communities, Moms Across America, and Herbicide Free Campus to know better what you can do, and how you can do it. (I consider myself a lucky man to say I am personal friends with the brilliant women behind each of these three organizations: Kathleen Hallal, Zen Honeycutt, and Mackenzie Feldman, respectively.)

And don’t forget: you can do your part by avoiding glyphosate products in your own garden or lawn, and even by eating only organic foods, which sidestep most agricultural chemicals entirely!

To a healing future,

Dear Jim,
During these turbulent times, we are thrilled to let you know a piece of good news! Yesterday, a federal court ruled in favor of Center for Food Safety’s lawsuit that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) violated core federal laws when it approved the first-ever genetically engineered (GE) animal: a GE salmon! This decision is a huge victory for wild salmon, the environment, and our fishing communities.
This work was only possible with your support – thank you!
The court ruled that FDA failed to analyze the serious risks to endangered salmon and other environmental impacts of this novel GE fish. The court declared FDA’s failures violated both the National Environmental Policy Act and the Endangered Species Act. Genetically engineered animals create unique risks and regulators must rigorously analyze them using sound science, not stick their head in the sand as the officials did here. In reality, this engineered fish offers nothing but unstudied risks. The absolute last thing our planet needs right now is another human-created crisis like escaped genetically engineered fish running amok.
The most important part of the court’s decision yesterday was its resounding rejection of FDA’s far-reaching argument that the agency had no duty to protect against the environmental impacts of the GE salmon, or any future GE animal. Thanks to our lawsuit, FDA has to make a new GE salmon decision that accounts for and protects against those dangers. And it has to do the same for any future GE animals.
Yesterday’s victory was the result of over 4 years of hard-fought litigation: In 2016, Center for Food Safety (CFS) and Earthjustice — representing a broad client coalition of environmental, consumer, commercial, and recreational fishing organizations — sued the FDA for approving the first-ever commercial genetically engineered animal, an Atlantic salmon engineered to grow twice as fast as its wild counterpart. The genetically engineered salmon was produced by AquaBounty Technologies Inc. with DNA from Atlantic salmon, Pacific king salmon, and Arctic Ocean eelpout. This marks the first time any government in the world has approved a commercially genetically engineered animal as food.
Studies have shown that there is a high risk for genetically engineered organisms to escape into the natural environment, and that genetically engineered salmon can crossbreed with native fish. “Transgenic contamination” — where genetically engineered crops cross-pollinate or establish themselves in nearby fields or the wild — has become common. These contamination episodes have cost U.S. farmers billions of dollars over the past decade. In wild organisms like fish, the damage would be even severe.
Currently there are no genetically engineered fish being sold in the U.S., and if any fish were to be sold, it would be required to be labeled as genetically engineered. And thanks to pressure from CFS members like you, dozens of retailers such as Kroger have already pledged to NOT sell GE salmon!
Lawsuits such as these take many years and thousands of hours of our legal team’s time, and all our work is done pro bono, without charge. Thank you for helping make this victory possible!

The General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) theory, developed by Hungarian-Canadian endocrinologist Hans Selye, explains why adhering to the same fitness regime for long periods of time can actually work against us. In a nutshell, you start a new workout routine - a daily walk, working out your favorite muscle group at the gym, tap class, a bike ride, etc. Once you’ve done this for awhile, your body starts to adapt. What was hard, is now easier. Then, you notice your body has stalled - your no longer sore, no longer losing weight, and no longer feeling like this workout is doing anything for you.

Here are some frequently asked questions about how to take on this challenge and apply it to your routine:

Q: How often should I change my fitness routine?

A: For general fitness, every 4-6 weeks is ideal; however, if you have a longer term plan, like training for a marathon, about every 12 - 16 weeks is best.

Q: How should I change my routine?

A: The answer to this is really up to you. You can make some small changes to your normal routine, or change the routine altogether. Small changes you can make would include changing the route on your daily walk, adding sets, changing the weight, increasing the intensity, changing the number of days you workout, etc. If you’re interested in changing up your whole routine we’d recommend trying out something you’ve always wanted to! Love your daily walk? Try the same route on a bike! Crazy about Zumba? Try a new type of dance like salsa or tap!

Q: It’s taken me so long to find something I actually like. I don’t want to give that up. What can I do?

A: We totally get that. The heart wants what it wants. So if you absolutely cannot live without your daily walk or run, your trip to the gym and the workout routine you’ve developed for yourself - no problem. Try adding something small to your routine to help your body move just a tad differently than before. Try lifting weights while sitting on an exercise ball. Try some ankle weights on your next walk or run. Add in a new, quick warm-up or cool down routine.

Remember that all of these — frequency, weights, reps, sets and method of training — are related. Changing one facet of your training may require you to change others to make it work. Keep things simple - change one component and allow your body to respond to that. Over time, you'll learn more about your body, which will allow you to make changes more easily.

In health,

Jen and your friends at FITera

Does looking at the picture below make you
feel dizzy or "uneasy?"

If so, this could be a simple way to see if your cerebellum is able to coordinate the information coming in from your eyes and ear canals. When our eyes have trouble 'locking' onto a target our brain begins to wonder if that target is moving, or if we are moving and the cerebellum has to integrate all that information coming in to calculate what to do as far as where to move our eyes and coordinate our muscles to move our body correctly as well.

If it gets overloaded then your cerebellum can have trouble inhibiting the sense of movement and/or nausea. For a lot of my patients, this is a good litmus test of how well we are getting different areas to coordinate.

Gut/Brain Axis:
How To Improve Your Brain/Body Balance And
Improve Your Health While You’re At It!

One of the most well-known lines of communication between the brain and a system is the digestive tract. The concept of a leaky gut has been demonstrated over and over in the research.

It is the epitome of a two-way street. One of the most known routes is the vagus nerve. This nerve goes to organs like the gut to sample what is going on in the bowels. It then relays this information up to the brain so the brain can help determine what is the best course of action to keep this massive system working well.

It isn’t just the food a person eats, or having bad bacteria, worms, parasites, or yeasts, but also the good bacterial byproducts that help heal the gut lining, balance the immune system, help with mood, as well as properly develop the brain and keep it working well as a person ages. Diseases like Parkinson’s have been shown to start in the gut and the toxins work their way up the vagal nerve and start degrading certain parts of the brain. When the immune system gets stimulated in the GI tract, the stress response gets activated in the brain to deal with this form of stress.

The vagus nerve controls aspects of gut health like bowel motility, digestive enzyme production and secretion, how aggressively the immune system responds, as well as blood flow to the gut to help acquire the nutrients just broken down to feed the brain. It can be a catch-22 in the sense if the brain isn’t working well, then the GI tract isn’t working well, which makes it harder and harder for the brain to do its job and the cycle continues.

It has been shown that something like a traumatic brain injury can cause the GI tract to start leaking within a few hours if a person hits their head hard enough. Consequently, vagal nerve stimulation has been shown to help mitigate the damage to the GI tract after a head injury.

When we think of inflammation, toxins, and stress, the GI tract can be a very large source of all of these since most people learn to deal with the symptoms and accept them as normal.

Jimi,
There are a variety of ways to prepare for the cold & flu season.

Eating a healthy balanced diet, exercising regularly and getting a good night's sleep included.

Dusting, scrubbing and sanitizing are also beneficial, but toxic cleaning supplies?

Nope.

In fact, a growing number of studies identify so-called "harmless" cleaning sprays, wipes, and foam as enormous health hazards. Especially when it comes to your skin and respiratory tract.

Even some so-called "green" cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that can harm your health.

But what about effectiveness? This is not a time to skimp on disinfectant.

The fact is -- cleaning and sanitizing products don’t have to be toxic or expensive to really WORK.

Dr. Pompa's Health Secret of the Week

The FDA is in charge of regulating what goes into your personal care products and cosmetics.

The only problem?

They’re not very good at it.

Since 2009, 595 manufacturers have reported using 88 chemicals that are linked to cancer or reproductive harm...

Some of the most dangerous chemicals don’t even have to be disclosed on the packaging due to federal labeling exemptions.

So, it’s no surprise that the FDA just released a list of toxic ingredients found in hand sanitizers, resulting in the recall of over 150 hand sanitizer brands on the market.

With this year’s focus on germs and viruses, many of us have ignored the possible repercussions of slathering our hands with toxins every day!

But don’t worry… there are easy (and cheap) ways to stay germ-free naturally.

>> [ARTICLE] Learn how to keep viruses at bay without toxin exposure, plus how to make non-toxic hand sanitizer at home [NEW DIY].

Dr. Gary Small, MD, writes:

Working memory is very short-term memory that holds information in your mind just long enough to use it.

Games that train working memory may actually make you smarter. Research indicates that when you train your working memory, it can translate into an improvement in what’s called “fluid intelligence” — the capacity to think logically and solve problems.

Other research shows that some computer games can improve multitasking skills.

Neuroscientists at the University of California, San Francisco, studied the game NeuroRacer, which involves steering an animated race car along a winding road while informative and distracting street signs pop up.

The researchers found that older adults who played the game for four weeks improved their multitasking skills to the point where they performed at the same level as untrained 20-year-olds.

Dr. Gary Small, M.D., author of The Mind Health Report newsletter, is a professor of psychiatry and aging, and director of the UCLA Longevity Center. One of the nation’s top brain health experts, he frequently appears on The Today Show, Good Morning America, and The Dr. Oz Show. He is coauthor with wife Gigi Vorgan of many bestsellers, including The Memory Bible and 2 Weeks to a Younger Brain.

EMPATHY

I think I know what's on most people's minds this weekend, and of course that's the election in the US. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, every election anywhere in the world is going to create at least two groups of very different people: those who are happy about the results and those who are not. During events and times like this that produce such a divide, I often marvel thinking about the population and how interesting it is that some are feeling overwhelming joy and hope and excitement while others are feeling anger and upset and rebellion brewing. The human psyche is a complex place, so it's no wonder that we struggle to understand each other at times.

It's a similar story on the emotional front, I have learned, when it comes to cancer or just facing challenges in general in our lives. We hear all the time to "stay positive", and we see others doing it seemingly effortlessly, even when that emotional state seems so incredibly far away for us. It might spark some resentment or frustration or anger even because we can't understand why they feel so differently than us, or perhaps we can't understand why they should.

I have seen this story play out over and over in my own life when I come up against someone who doesn't believe in the integrative treatment route I took. I have sensed anger there, as if my choosing a different path somehow took something away from their choice, negated it in some way. And I have seen this same story in the vast spectrum of emotions and attitudes that surround a cancer diagnosis or any challenge really. Some meet the challenge with anger and fight, others with curiosity and quiet determination, and still others with any combination of both positive and negative emotions. And despite the wide range of emotions we may personally experience, we find it difficult to understand when someone else feels something entirely different. Like I said, the human psyche is a complicated place.

But that's the most important part, HUMAN psyche; we are all human, and that should preclude anything else. I saw a meme recently that said, "Empathy is more rebellious than a middle finger", and I have to agree. We have become so used to pushing back that it's the norm to refuse to try and understand where others are coming from, why they are feeling the way that they are, this way that is so different than how we are. It's so much easier to say there is something wrong with them or that they are incorrect or that they would feel differently if they could only see things for how they really are or that, or that, or that, instead of figuring out how they got there in the first place. Excuses are easier than empathy.

But it's empathy that is going to give us the most. It's empathy that will allow us to understand a different perspective, and it's that understanding that may just help us to make a change, in ourselves, in our social circle, in the world around us. There may be something in understanding another that allows you to understand yourself more and meet that challenge more effectively. It's not about everyone agreeing, it's about everyone understanding and recognizing that we're all in this together, and that it's going to take all of us, all of our perspectives and ideas and emotions, to get through this crazy thing called life.

So, spread empathy instead of middle fingers.
Happy Healing ❤️

Mental Health Monday

For this MHM, I'm continuing my discussion of how we can deal with it when people don't agree with our treatment decisions. Usually it's loved ones who are operating from a place of fear and have only the best of intentions, but it can be scary, frustrating, and confusing to have them trying to push you in one direction, away from what may feel absolutely right to you. There is just so much chaos, both internal and external, following a cancer diagnosis, and this is definitely something that adds to that chaos. So, how do we deal with it when those that are meant to be supporting us don't agree with our treatment decisions and feel as though they are indeed doing their job of supporting by, as they see it, guiding us away from a "mistake"?
Today's MHM vlog is part two in a series on how we deal with just that.

Part one was all about the steps you can take to factually backup and then explain your gut instincts, both to yourself and to other people, and you can find that here.

Part two is about what to do once those decisions are made. May it bring you a little clarity in the chaos!

My Star Supplements: Turkey Tail Mushroom

Also called Yun Zhi and coriolus versicolor, turkey tail mushroom’s use in medicine originates in China, though you can find it all over the Northern hemisphere in Asia, Europe, and North America. It also grows pretty much all year, making it quite an accessible mushroom. You have likely come across it while hiking! This mushroom is an immune-boosting superhero, has anticancer and antioxidant effects, and it has even been shown to reduce the side effects of chemo and radiation.

Lessons Cancer Taught Me: Year 3

In my first year after diagnosis, I started to have realizations about different things I was learning from cancer: ways I was changing, positive growth I was experiencing, and how my perspective on life was shifting. I started writing them down, and it is something that I continue today. I have started to share my lessons from year three in the Facebook group, so if you have missed any of them, visit the link below to see the most recent one, and then meander through the posts on the group wall to see the others. I will keep posting until I share them all. I hope they speak to you and help you find some pockets of light in your own darkness.
