Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:

When I talk to people about toxins, most assume that I’m referring to mysterious substances that are involved in manufacturing.

But the home is also a source of many toxins that can negatively impact a person’s liver.

Bromide is a compound made from an ion of bromine along with other elements. Bromine is in the same chemical family as iodine. Bromide is a very toxic substance.

In the periodic table of elements, both bromine and iodine are found in Group 7, a number of chemically similar elements called halogens. When halogens combine with other elements, they form compounds called halides.

The problem is that one halogen can competitively inhibit another. That means if a person is exposed to excess bromine, the body can accumulate that element at the expense of iodine.

Fluorine and chlorine are also halogens. Of these four, two are essential — chlorine (as chloride compounds) and iodine (iodides) — meaning that we can’t live without them. Fluorine and bromine (as fluorides and bromides) are nonessential.

There’s no known therapeutic function for bromine for the human body. In fact, the medical community has long understood that it is a goitrogen, which means that accumulation in the thyroid gland can cause a swelling, or goiter.

Researchers have also found elevated bromide levels in patients with thyroid cancer.

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., editor of the Natural Way to Health newsletter, is a board-certified family physician and one of the nation’s foremost practitioners of holistic medicine. In addition to his practice, Dr. Brownstein has lectured internationally to physicians and is the author of six very popular books.

I have pretty much stopped using social media.
Sure I still post the occasional picture of my kid to Instagram so family can share in (i.e. click the little heart button) the fun of my girls growing up but otherwise...
I even deleted Facebook of my phone!!
The whole reason is election year nonsense. Not nonsense in the "people disagree with me" sense, but in the "people are just being mean to each other" sense.
So, here is a graphical representation of my plans based on if Trump or Biden win the presidency:

Which Dairy-Milk Alternatives Digest the Best?

Everyone’s got an opinion on dairy, and the science is dense and often conflicting.

From the ubiquity of the “Got Milk?” campaign to the recent rise in cow milk-alternatives, our beliefs are often tied to something personal – your mother always brought you fresh whole milk to drink during dinner, or milk used to give you flu-like symptoms and constipation and you didn’t connect the dots for many years, or you’re personally sickened by the dairy farm industry and the treatment of cattle…

Arguably, the people who have the most complicated relationship to dairy milk are those with digestive issues – IBS, leaky gut, and other common disorders.

And one of the most cited reasons to cut dairy from your diet is lactose intolerance, often affecting or affected by a digestive disorder, which can manifest in cramps, loose stools, backed up bowels, and even eczema.

Around 30 million Americans are diagnosed as lactose intolerant, meaning they lack the lactase enzyme necessary to properly digest the sugar in milk, or lactose. The estimation of how much of the global population lacks that enzyme is breathtaking – 65%.

So does dairy cause inflammation?

Not necessarily on its own – but so many of us aren’t equipped to digest it, or have leaky gut syndrome without realizing it, that it does cause inflammation...

Which as we know, is at the heart of most of Western chronic diseases, ranging from depression to autoimmune disorders.​

It’s hard to know where to turn, especially in a health-food grocery store, when seeking a dairy milk replacement.

Some have been readily available for long enough that we know their pros and cons pretty well – like soy milk and almond milk. Others are newer, like oat milk.

Let’s break down how these dairy-milk alternatives can interact with your gut.

Goat’s Milk

During the age-old argument about whether or not humans should drink cow’s milk at all, or just in the first few years of life, or forever, goat’s milk often makes an appearance. It’s similar enough to cow’s milk that parents of young children recommend it to help make the transition from breast milk without leaning on cow’s milk.

Similarly to cow’s milk, it’s a complete protein – but it’s lower in lactose. Some studies have shown that even those who cannot metabolize lactose may still benefit from it, to the degree that when undigested lactose ferments in the gut, it feeds bifidobacteria!

So if you’re lactose intolerant, but still want to experience dairy benefits, switching to a milk variety with a lower lactose content might be the ticket.

Lactose-Free Milk

Lactose-free milk, like Lactaid, is just milk with the lactose removed.​

That means that you can still enjoy the benefits of milk without the disruption to your digestion. It’s also allowed on a low-FODMAP diet (FODMAP being fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols, which are short-chain carbohydrates that aren’t absorbed well by the small intestines.)

When repairing the gut, low-FODMAP diets are often recommended so that it can heal free of additional irritation.​
Hemp Milk

This type of milk – yes, from the same plant as marijuana (no, it doesn’t have that kind of effect) – mimics the texture and thickness of cow’s milk.

It’s also allowed in a low-FODMAP diet, and is packed full of anti-inflammatory Omega-3 fatty acids, protein, healthy fats, calcium, and iron. It is one of the fattier alternatives to cow’s milk available, but as they say…

It’s good fat. And healthy fats help to feed the good bacteria in our guts!

Kefir Milk

Fans of fermented foods out there will recognize kefir milk as one of the most beneficial things you can imbibe for your gut health.

It’s usually made from cow, sheep, or goat milk, but sometimes coconut, and less gut-friendly soy and rice milk. It’s thicker than milk, and a little tangy, so it might not be the best substitute for say, cookies and milk, but otherwise – have at it!

Kefir milk is more than not harmful. Because of its status as fermented, it’s full of probiotic bacteria and yeast that your beneficial gut bacteria loves.

Oat Milk

The latest craze in non-dairy milk, it has twice the dietary fiber of cow’s milk. That means that it supports digestive function twice as well!

This kind of milk is lactose-free, dairy-free, nut-free, soy-free, and usually gluten-free. It’s the hypoallergenic milk-replacement of your dreams.

However, be sure to check the back of the carton – if you see stabilizers such as gums, sugar alcohols, or artificial sweeteners (like xanthan gum or carrageenan), be wary. They can irritate the gut and cause gas or bloating.

Honorable Mention: Coconut Milk

Coconuts have wonderful full-body benefits, including for gut health. However, people find that substituting coconut milk for milk isn’t enough of a facsimile. It’s a lot thinner than regular milk, but if you can get past that…

It’s a good source of fiber and plenty of other vitamins. However, it may exacerbate IBS symptoms as some components of it can act as a laxative.

Whether you’re eliminating dairy for environmental, tolerance, or whole-body health reasons, there are a wealth of options to keep you and your digestive tract running optimally!

I'm a really active person, and will continue this lifestyle forever. That means I have had multiple injuries, sprains, strains, and even broken bones.

So, over the last 5 years I've increasingly used essential oils to help my bones heal faster. Obviously, essential oils will not heal a broken bone by themselves. (Always go to the doctor and make sure the bone is properly set and put in a cast or other immobilizing device.)

Once the acute injury or fracture has been addressed, essential oils can be used as an additional therapy to:
  • Help improve blood and lymph flow
  • Help repair the tissue around the fracture
  • Relieve the local swelling and inflammation
  • Relieve pain
  • Warm up the injured area to speed up the healing process

3) Peppermint helps relieve aches, pains,and inflammation as well as calm muscle spasms. That makes it an ideal natural therapy for pain associated with broken bones. Plus the menthol contained in Peppermint oil naturally warms the skin and
muscles to improve circulation in the area of injury.

Cooking With Whole Grains Offers Taste, Nutritional Value

When it comes to getting the best taste and the greatest nutritional value from grains, keep it whole grain.

Quinoa, oats, short-grain brown rice and wild rice, polenta (which is made from corn), and barley are most nutritious in their whole, unprocessed form. That's because the bran is still intact, and the bran is where most of the minerals, vitamins, and plenty of fiber reside.

But don't be fooled by the word "multi-grain" — that doesn’t mean whole grains were used.

Brown rice is high in magnesium and tryptophan, barley is high in selenium and tryptophan, and steel cut oats are high in manganese and zinc.

Quinoa is another excellent choice, high in iron and manganese, plus it's quicker to cook than the other grains.

Use cooked grains in any dish that calls for white rice or pasta. If you're eating them plain, you can still get creative with tasty "add-ins," like dried cranberries on breakfast oatmeal or barley, a drizzle of balsamic on brown rice, and a sprinkle of Parmesan on quinoa. Other great grains to use include:

  • Amaranth
  • Bulgur
  • Buckwheat
  • Kasha (toasted buckwheat)
  • Spelt
  • Farro

Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Valentine's Day... The celebration of sweets, food, and alcohol is commencing, and it will go on for the next several months.

Saturday was Halloween, it was a full moon - perfect for trick or treating. Paxton had a blast tricking and treating in our small close-knit neighborhood. Everyone was super creative about how they handed out treats this year; tables were set up in driveways, someone had a stick-garden of candy bars, and even one lady dressed as a witch handed out candy via a broomstick.

It was awesome, and all the kids went home with bags full of treats.

Way too many treats for their little bodies to consume....

Dr. Chauncey Crandall, M.D., writes:

Getting too little or too much sleep can affect stroke risk, depending on a man’s race, researchers say. Short sleep was defined as six hours or less; long sleep was nine or more hours.

The researchers looked at nearly 17,000 white and Black Americans, average age 64, with no history of stroke. During an average follow-up of six years, a total of 460 strokes occurred among 172 Blacks and 288 whites. Blacks accounted for 37% of the participants.

Special: Sleep Better With This Doctor's Natural Secret

Black men who slept less than six hours a night were 80% less likely to have a stroke than those who were average sleepers.

White men who slept nine or more hours a night had a 70% higher risk of stroke than those who were average sleepers.

Amount of sleep had no effect on stroke risk for Black or white women, according to the study. The results were published in the journal Neurology.

The researchers adjusted for other stroke risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, and heart disease. But the study didn’t prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship.

“More research is needed to determine the mechanisms behind these relationships,” said study author Virginia Howard from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “In the meantime, this emphasizes how important it is to better monitor and control cardiovascular risk factors in middle-age to older people who have long sleep periods.”

He is a Yale graduate and is chief of the Cardiac Transplant Program at the world-renowned Palm Beach Cardiovascular Clinic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
