Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:

For years, we have been fed a narrative that a high level of LDL cholesterol is responsible for causing heart disease, and therefore lowering LDL cholesterol to the lowest level possible is a good thing.

The current recommendations are to reduce that number to less than 70 mg/dL. For a report that appeared in the journal Neurology, researchers studied the association between LDL cholesterol and brain bleeding risk. More than 96,000 subjects who had never had a stroke, heart attack, or cancer were studied.

Special: Dr. Crandall Reveals the Secret to Normal Cholesterol

Averages of LDL cholesterol were correlated to the development of heart disease. Subjects with LDL cholesterol levels of 70 mg/dL to 99 mg/dL had a similar risk of heart disease as those with levels greater than 100 mg/dL.

Those with LDL levels less than 70 mg/dL had a significantly higher risk for developing heart disease than those with LDL levels of 70 mg/dL to 90 mg/dL.

For those with LDL levels of 50 mg/dL to 69 mg/dL, there was a 65% higher risk, and there was a 169% higher risk for those with LDL levels below 50 mg/dL.

I’ve been saying this for years: Using toxic medications to lower cholesterol levels as much as possible does not make sense. This study found a significantly higher risk of brain bleeds when LDL levels are lowered to the recommended ranges.

Statin drugs help about 1% of people who take them. Now we have new cholesterol-lowering medications that target LDL cholesterol receptors. They poison a crucial enzyme which results in a drastically lower LDL cholesterol.

But the side effects of doing this include serious, life-threatening infections, cancer, and now brain bleeds.

As I wrote in my book, “The Statin Disaster,” both statins and LDL-lowering medications are fraught with side effects and have poor efficacy.

If your cholesterol levels are too high, it is best to search for a reason why this is occurring and avoid taking toxic medications that simply fail most who take them.

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., editor of the Natural Way to Health newsletter, is a board-certified family physician and one of the nation’s foremost practitioners of holistic medicine. In addition to his practice, Dr. Brownstein has lectured internationally to physicians and is the author of six very popular books.

Hi Jimi

Fear of cancer recurrence is considered one of the most prominent concerns for patients following a cancer diagnosis.

Living with uncertainty is never easy. It’s important to recognize that fear and anxiety are normal parts of the cancer journey. This worry usually gets better over time, and there are even ways we can reduce it.

Here are some actionable ways to reduce the fear of cancer recurrence.

Diet: Maintaining a healthy diet is crucial to life after cancer because you have to care for your body after treatment. Many of our patients thrive on a low sugar, nutrient-dense eating plan. This includes grass-fed protein, seasonal vegetables, and healthy fats.

Exercise: The body was meant to move. Exercise powerfully boosts immune function. It does this by improving the circulation of immune cells throughout the body so that they can more easily get to their destination, which is the cancer cells. Not only that but cancer recurrence is much higher in obese patients.

Comprehensive blood work: Know your numbers! Correct deficiencies and know what's going on in your body. This includes inflammation levels, sugar levels, vitamin D, and so much more.

Continue regular doctor visits: One goal of follow-up care is to check for a recurrence of cancer. Utilize mammograms, ultrasounds, thermography, and CT scans to monitor the state of your body. This will give you peace of mind from the fear of cancer reoccurrence.

Check for circulating tumor cells (CTCs): We check for circulating tumor cells through the RGCC liquid biopsy. This test measures the level of circulating tumor cells in your body. CTC's are responsible for 95 percent of metastasis. A test like this can individualize your care and is only offered at a few clinics around the world.

Reduce stress: Finding ways to manage stress will help lower your overall level of anxiety. Try different ways of reducing stress to find out what works best for you. This could include:
  • Spending time with family and friends
  • Focusing on hobbies and other activities you enjoy
  • Taking a walk, meditating, or enjoying a bath
  • Exercising regularly
  • Reading a funny book or watching a funny movie
Don’t live in fear. Talk to your health care provider who can help you identify ways to manage the fear and other accompanying emotions.

We tell ourselves that we would be happier if things worked out differently. We yearn for things and experiences we want instead of focusing on things we do have. Constantly worrying about what could have been keeps you trapped in misery. Maybe it could have been different. There were so many possibilities. But one played out. And now you have the choice to make the most of it. Don't miss the happiness that's right in front of you.

Study: Tofu Lowers Heart Disease Risk

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

According to a new study, eating tofu and other foods with high levels of isoflavones — plant-based “phytoestrogens” — could lower people’s risk of heart disease, especially in women.

Researchers tracked data on more than 200,000 Americans enrolled in long-term health and nutrition studies. All of them were free of cancer and heart disease when the studies began.

Special: Coffee — Good for Your Heart, Brain, Weight and More

After accounting for other factors associated with heart disease, the researchers concluded that eating tofu more than once a week was associated with an 18% lower risk of heart disease, compared to people who ate tofu less than once a month, who had an average 12% reduction in heart risk.

The reduced heart disease risk associated with regular tofu consumption was seen primarily in women before menopause or postmenopausal women who weren’t taking hormones, according to the study published in the journal Circulation.

Thanks for that. I think she has said it about 10 times already and expect about the same again. She had that Quad one. 4 strains.
I had it but am fine. I only had it because if I dont then I cant go into the hospital to visit patients. Odd because when I said I wasn't get the covid one they said "thats ok its not compulsory, you can still come in." So I cant go in without a flu vac but can go in without a covid vac!?
This might be my last year doing it as much as I love it as im not sure ill get the flu vac again.

It was quite a few years back my mom got the flu shot and she didn't feel well for a month if not longer. Mainly tired and weak, with headache, muscle pain, and off n on fever.
I usually go with her to the doctor appointments, but at this time she didn't tell nor ask me. It sounded like the doctor pushed (talked) her into getting the shot. So far she has stuck by her words and hasn't gotten one, thank goodness! And, she hasn't had the flu or been sick since. Just a flare of sinuses now and then from seasonal allergies.
That is odd about the flu shot and the jab. If you don't get the flu shot again, it will be hard to fill that part of your life, if at all. Doing that leaves a mark on the heart and nearly impossible to fill it with the same kind of love.

Stop seeing failure as something to be ashamed of. Failure doesn't mean you're weak. If anything, it shows that you have the courage and determination to go after what you want, and take risks. You're trying and learning along the way. Strength is achieved through being able to navigate life despite the numerous challenges in the way. Don't let shame make you believe that failure is a dead end. It is not. You can always move forward.

FEATURED CALL TO ACTION
ACT NOW: Tell your governor and local legislators that COVID-19 vaccines MUST BE VOLUNTARY!
In May, the New York State Bar Association issued an 83-page report calling for mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for all Americans; the only exception, the association said, would be doctor-ordered medical reasons. The association — one of the nation’s largest state bar groups — joins a growing number of organizations, government leaders and corporations voicing support for mandating a COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available. Even large entertainment companies like Ticketmaster have announced future plans to require patrons to show proof of vaccination before they’re permitted to attend music, sporting and other events.
However, there is a growing divide among Americans over whether they will get a COVID-19 vaccine. In the latest poll from the Pew Research Center, which surveyed more than 10,000 U.S. adults in September, about half of respondents (51%) said they would definitely or probably get a COVID-19 vaccine if it were available today. When Pew conducted the same poll this past spring, 72% said they would get a COVID-19 vaccine when it became available. The share who would definitely get a coronavirus vaccine now stands at 21%, half of what it was just months ago. The sharp decline comes amidst widespread concerns over aspects of the vaccine development process, concern about side effects and uncertainty over safety.

It surprises many women that allergies and hormones are intimately connected. Do you suffer from allergies, with congestion, scratchy throat, or itchy eyes? Do you also happen to have symptoms of estrogen dominance? These often go hand-in-hand. Excess estrogen can be highly inflammatory and drive up your histamine intolerance.
Quercetin and nettles, two powerful antioxidants, may help address both conditions.
In Eastern European countries, nettles are used to reduce arthritic pain—they would beat a patient with a bunch of nettles (probably due to its anti-inflammatory properties).
Nettles also lower histamine—excess histamine is what causes the immune system to react to androgens such as pollen, dog or cat fur, and dust. Interestingly, lower histamine also leads to lower estrogen dominance.
Here are a few more ways nettles impact your hormone health:
  • High in vitamin C, leads to progesterone production
  • Anti-inflammatory, meaning more sensitive hormone receptors
  • Uterine tonic (gently supports the uterus)
  • Blood sugar-balancing (decreases stress hormones)
Here are a few more great facts about nettles:
It’s not just nettles that lower histamine levels. The bioflavonoid quercetin is an amazing antioxidant that can help alleviate allergies, support a healthy inflammatory response in the body, and reduce histamine. As I mentioned, lower histamine means lowered instances of estrogen dominance.

REACH

When we’re diagnosed, it can make us shut down. It’s true of many traumas and challenges.

A lot of resentment can flare in the wake, along with a ton of other complex emotions, and it can feel like no one will understand. That combination of feelings, of resentment and of isolation, can be killer. It can make us say things like, “Why should I bother sharing where I’m at? No one will get it anyway.” Or maybe, “It’s just going to upset people, and I don’t want to be a burden.” Or even, “If I don’t talk about it, it won’t feel as real."

It can come from a place of self preservation initially, and it can be what we need for a time while we start to process all of those emotions. But, if we tell ourselves for too long that we shouldn't or that we can't share how we're feeling, we will come to believe it and the shutdown will become a habit.

I was reminded recently that as much as we shove down or try to ignore or reason away difficult and challenging emotions, they will still be there. Perhaps we will succeed in making them a little quieter for a while, but eventually, the volume will get turned back up and they'll be blocking our path once again. And if it has become our habit not to share them and work through them, we can get stuck in a very painful and stressful cycle of flare ups, pushing away, pressing on, and then flaring again.

It can be terrifying to take that first step towards opening ourselves up. What if I'm the only one who feels this way? What if people get tired of hearing me talk about myself? I should be strong enough to deal with this on my own. I don't want any pity. But I am here to tell you that, whatever you are going through, especially when it comes to cancer, you are not alone in how you are feeling and what you are going through. There are others out there in the same club you've unwillingly had to join, and they are just waiting to help you through membership.

I wouldn't have gotten through cancer nearly as well as I did without the support of my family, absolutely, but it would have been incredibly more confusing, difficult, scary, and painful without the amazing support group I joined a few months after being diagnosed. Those women...ooomph, I just can't say enough about how important and meaningful their support was. Crazy emotions I can barely understand let alone explain to my loved ones? They understood without an explanation and let me know they felt them too. Difficult decisions that could mean life or death? We could learn from each others' experiences and be guided towards the right answer for each of us. The tears we sometimes couldn't shed anywhere else? Man, did we let loose in that room. And when we lost one of our own and the fear and the sadness and the anger felt like it might swallow us? We could reach out and find a dozen other hands waiting to pull us through.

Finding your people is everything, and so worth that terrifying first step towards them.

Cancer is a team sport. It takes a team of healthcare professionals, of loved ones, of social workers and therapists, of charity organisations and the kindness of strangers, and absolutely of teammates who are training for the same Olympics you are. Feelings of isolation breed so many other negative emotions and can send us to the darkest of places. Sharing with those who understand exactly where you are coming from and where you are going to is one of the best ways I know of to resolve those feelings and start the journey back to the light.

There will likely be side tracks you get pulled down, pitted roads that take you off course and throw you for a loop, but your team will always be there, cheering you on and providing a sound for you to follow back to the path forward. So, don't let fear or discomfort stop you; take that first step and reach out your hand.

Happy Healing ❤️

Mental Health Monday

I have something a little different for you for MHM this week. Instead of just talking to my camera, I talked to someone else! I had the absolute pleasure being a guest on Open up and Speak with Andrea Veasey, and the full episode is out just in time for MHM! In this heartfelt discussion, we talk about how I ended up on my integrative treatment path and the profound effect choosing this path has had on my healing and my life. I also talk about cancer PTSD and how it affects my life, which is an area of mental health after a cancer diagnosis that definitely needs more awareness brought to it and more tools and advice for dealing with it made available! You can listen to the full episode at the link below, or you can find it anywhere you listen to your podcasts. I hope that you find it both entertaining and supportive!

Diet and Anticancer Nutrition: Recipes

For the first year and a half after my diagnosis, I avoided tofu and most soy products. There was a ton of conflicting info and debate surrounding the safety of soy for people who had a hormone-driven cancer like my breast cancer was, and so I thought it better safe than sorry and avoided it most of the time. Then, I started hearing more and more about the benefits of soy for hormone-driven cancers, and so I dug back into the research about a year ago. I go into all that I found out in my Great Soy Debate blog post. I started adding soy products into the rotation a lot more, trying for a moderate amount of 1-1.5 cups a day (of course, not always reaching that

) of things like tofu, tempeh, soy milk, edamame, miso, etc. This week, I shared a delicious recipe for stir-fry with crispy baked tofu in nut butter sauce that makes it easy to get in a couple of your servings of vegetables as well as your soy.

Dr. Russell Blaylock, M.D., writes:

What we have learned over the past several decades is that the microorganisms within the colon (which include bacteria, fungi, and certain viruses — called collectively microbiota), play a major role in virtually every aspect of physiology and ongoing development.

Other functions these organisms perform in the human body include:

  • Reducing inflammation
  • Inhibiting cancer
  • Maintaining immune health
  • Producing important nutrients
  • Playing a role in the manufacture of bile
  • Secreting a number of neurotransmitters
  • Playing a major role in stress adaptation
  • Playing a crucial role in brain health and development
Special: This Gut Health Secret Is Key to Your Body's Immune Challenge

The human gut contains trillions of microorganisms, more than 100 times the number of genes as are found in our cells.

In fact, there are thousands of different bacterial species within the colon alone. Recent studies have shown that these microbiota are part of a complex network called the microbiota-gutbrain axis, which also involves the nerves in the walls of the gastrointestinal tract, the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic systems), the neuroendocrine system (special hormones), and the immune system.

Basically, this axis amounts to a two-way communication link between the brain and the intestines.

The gut bacteria (microbiota) talk to the brain by special chemical messages, and the brain talks back to the gut via the vagus nerve and spinal nerves. There is compelling evidence that the development of the brain is dependent on a healthy assortment of gut microorganisms that colonize a baby’s intestines very soon after birth.

The main sources of these highly beneficial bacteria are in the mother’s birth canal during natural childbirth and by ingesting mother’s milk during breastfeeding.

Babies born by C-section and those that are bottle-fed have a different assortment of gut microbiota. This can affect their development and future health, especially behavioral health.

Another important factor during this early stage of development is exposure of the baby (and later the young child) to antibiotics, which can kill or severely alter these vital organisms.

It appears that after a person’s microbiota is established, the organisms remain fairly stable throughout life.

Dr. Russell Blaylock, M.D., is editor of The Blaylock Wellness Report and a nationally recognized board-certified neurosurgeon, health practitioner, author, and lecturer.
