MANDATE UPDATE:

For much of the year, as the “shot” campaign gained steam, many argued for employers to add pressure to those on the fence by making it a requirement.

There’s been lots of questions about ethics and legalities.

But that is not stopping some from jumping on board.

Just announced... Delta Air Lines is requiring all NEW employees to get the shot, becoming one of the first U.S. companies to enforce a mandate.

“Delta will require all new hires in the U.S. to be v@ccinated against COVID-19, unless they qualify for an accommodation,” the company said in a statement.

According to the company, the requirement will protect Delta’s employees and customers, ensuring the airline can safely operate as the number of fliers increases.

What’s most interesting is this...

“I’m not going to mandate and force people if they have some specific reason why they don’t want to get vaccinated, but I’m going to strongly encourage them and make sure they understand the risks to not getting vaccinated,” CEO Ed Bastian told CNN in a recent interview.

“One caveat to that, though. Any person joining Delta in the future—future employees—we’re going to mandate they be vaccinated before they can sign up with the company.”

But Bastian said it wouldn’t be fair to current employees to make vaccination a requirement to stay in their job, “if there’s some philosophical issue they have.”

For current employees that choose not to receive the v@ccine, they will likely be required to get tested weekly and be ineligible for international flights.

No such luck for new hires moving forward.

We give meaning to life’s events to make sense of things happening to us. The meaning you give your experiences will affect how you feel. If you define something as negative, you will end up in a negative emotional state.

Your happiness lies in re-framing events. Don’t get too caught up with circumstances beyond your control. Sure, these circumstances do have an impact on us, but you have to make sure you don't give away your power to such circumstances.

Protecting Your Brain as You Age

Those athletes know how important it is to push yourself. That’s a surefire way to protect your brainpower as you age as well.

A 2017 Lancet commission on dementia found that 35% of cases were preventable if people managed high blood pressure, obesity, hearing loss, depression, diabetes, inactivity, and isolation in later life.

But missing from that equation was the influence of emotional health in midlife — a critical period for dementia-related brain changes and psychosocial crises — on the development of cognitive problems later on.

Using decades of data, researchers found that a sense of personal growth and a continuing drive to pursue improved health and happiness at age 52 set you up for better cognition at 69. In other words, look for new experiences and aim for self-improvement.

Here are six things you can do to protect your brain as you age:

1. Expand your circle of friends and acquaintances by helping others.

2. Learn new skills and pursue whatever you're curious about.

4. Avoid exposure to toxins from smoking/vaping.

5. Manage your stress response.

DAWDLE​

We put a lot of pressure on ourselves these days. I know I do at least. I often feel as though everything has to get done NOW, and while there are certain things that have a deadline, not everything does. Today’s society prizes pushing and working and not slowing down, and we are made to feel like we are somehow failing if we aren’t constantly hustling. And while there is a benefit to working hard and challenging ourselves, there is a detriment in working too hard, in pushing ourselves beyond the point that we should. The pressure to go, go, go makes it very difficult to enjoy what we’re doing in this moment when we’re rushing ourselves through it to get to the next thing on our to-do list. And then the cycle repeats. We’re perennially stressing about moving on to the upcoming task instead of trusting we will get to it when the time is right and enjoying the task we are currently involved in.
This feeling is intensified after a cancer diagnosis because we are more acutely aware of the clock and that it’s counting down; we can almost feel time slipping through our fingers because we are confronted with the fact that this life is finite. And while this feeling often pushes us to speed up, we should actually do the opposite. There is a personal sanctity almost in slowing down and recognising it doesn’t all need to get done NOW. You are declaring your love for yourself and acknowledging that you are worthy of your own care and time and attention.
I’m writing this while sitting beside the most gorgeous river, surrounded by lush greenness; it’s that beautiful tipping point between spring and summer, when the early flowers are still in full bloom but the vibrant green of summer is emerging. It reminds me that nature doesn’t rush, it doesn’t try to control, it doesn’t pressure itself. Plants and animals go about their lives, innately trusting that spring will come, that they will wake from hibernation, that life will go on as it’s meant to. They don’t set unattainable standards for themselves based on what they think others expect of them. In fact, they don’t worry at all about what anyone or anything thinks of them. They just live. It is when I am surrounded by nature that I am reminded of how important it is to take a lesson from it, to slow down, to surrender our timeline, to trust that things are happening as and when they are meant to.
This is HARD for me. I am a recovering people pleaser with perfectionist tendencies and an unshakeable focus when I’m really honed in. Because of the many times my life has already been turned upside down by loss and trauma and things outside of my control, my natural reflex is to try to control as much as I can in my life. When we do this though, it blocks us off from the other limitless possibilities, possibilities that have the potential to be far better than anything we could imagine ourselves. We think we know better, but usually we don’t.
When we rush and push and strain and control, we tighten and close. But, when we can slow down and be present, we open to the potential and abundance that surrounds us. Things that seemed impossible, now seem totally doable. Anxiety, fear, and stress are transformed into hope, joy, and anticipation. And chaos is replaced with peace.
The more you do this, the more this practice will spread to encompass a greater part of your life and your activity. So, as another holiday weekend graces us with its presence (in Canada at least!), I encourage you to find your moment of undemanding ease, to slow your pace and enjoy the moment you are in instead of rushing through it so that you can rush through the next.
Let go, be present, and dawdle, just a bit.

Mental Health Monday​

This week, I shared part one of a series on my absolute favourite mantra, Courage Over Comfort. The meaning this mantra has for me has gone through three distinct phases that match with the phases of my healing. The first phase was an initial, more practical meaning, and then the second was a reaffirmation of the integrative route I chose, both of which I am discussing today in part one of this series.
In part two, I will share about the final deeper and more spiritual meaning that Courage Over Comfort has come to represent and how I use this particular mantra in a way that is different to the more traditional way I have used other mantras.
