What Does 'Autoimmune' Mean?
Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:

Two of the white blood cells the immune system produces to monitor what is happening in the body are called B-cells (which mature in bone marrow) and T-cells (which mature in the thymus gland).

T-cells stimulate the immune system when foreign invaders enter the body. Some T-cells (CD8) can destroy viruses or tumors that infect normal cells. Natural killer T-cells can also destroy tumor cells as well as the body’s own cells when they are infected with viruses.

Special: Doctor Reveals Little-Known Immune Health Secret

B-cells are part of the body’s humoral immunity, so named because it includes materials found in the humors, or bodily fluids. B-cells produce antibodies when they come in contact with foreign invaders.

The human immune system is always working. When we eat, the immune system determines if food particles are safe to enter the bloodstream. If the immune system senses a food particle is dangerous, it will produce an antibody against it.

I test every patient who comes to my office for food allergies. Dairy testing is a crucial part of that. More than 80% of people I’ve tested were producing antibodies against casein, a protein found in most dairy products. A patient who produces antibodies to casein will cause his or her immune system to go into a reactive mode when casein enters the body, through drinking a glass of cow’s milk or eating a piece of pizza with cheese made from milk.

The immune system is recognizing casein as a foreign substance that should not be in the body, and is trying to eliminate it with antibodies produced by B-cells. Those antibodies tag the casein protein for removal by other white blood cells.

When a person who is sensitive to casein continually ingests it, the immune system reacts by repeatedly producing antibodies. That leads to an overactive immune system that can inadvertently start overproducing other inflammatory molecules, resulting in overwhelming inflammation.

As the cells of the body become more stressed, the immune system can mistakenly begin to produce antibodies against its own cells.

I have seen such an immune overreaction occur many times. For example, Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune condition of the thyroid gland. In cases of Hashimoto’s, the body produces antibodies against the thyroid gland itself. I have treated many Hashimoto’s patients simply by finding out what food is causing the immune system to become overwhelmed, and removing it from the diet.

Sensitivity to gluten — a composite of proteins found in wheat, rye, and barley — is one of the most common causes of Hashimoto’s disease. Researchers have shown one of the proteins, gliadin, has a similar structure to thyroid molecules. In fact, people with Hashimoto’s are more likely to develop gluten sensitivity (also called gluten intolerance), and those with celiac disease are more likely to develop thyroid problems, including Hashimoto’s.

Though it’s not noted as frequently in medical literature as gluten sensitivity, I have seen many patients with Hashimoto’s improve or even cure their condition altogether by avoiding dairy products.

But keep in mind that I don’t try just one therapy with these patients. For such patients, avoiding dairy and/or gluten is advised along with a holistic treatment plan that includes balancing the hormonal system and correcting nutrient imbalances.

"Healing is Voltage" - Part 3​

In the past two newsletter emails I've described "voltage" as extremely important to the healing process.
The role of voltage was dramatically evident in experiments by Robert O. Becker, MD revealing that salamanders could regenerate entire arms, ears, legs, up to 1/3 of its brain, up to 1/2 of its heart, and almost all of its digestive tract if these were surgically removed.
Yet frogs did not typically demonstrate regeneration like this.
In a salamander the voltage in the damaged area reaches -30 millivolts of "electron donor" during the recovery process while a frog typically does not make this voltage leap and does not regenerate the body part.
But when voltage from a battery was applied to the stump of a frog's removed limb, it regenerated a replacement limb instead of a scarred stump.
As described in the previous two newsletter emails, the body's ability to store and deliver voltage where it is needed in the body can be disrupted by scars, dental infections, toxicities (including those produced by infections, oxidation, etc), emotional baggage, and low thyroid function (or other causes of low energy production).
So identifying voltage disruptions and restoring normal voltage can essential to healing.
But as much as "healing is voltage" makes for a powerful and almost-unifying theory of health and healing, it does not cover everything we need to know.
For example, genetics and bio-individual biochemistry not only affect voltage but also drive phenomena having nothing to do with voltage.
An example of a genetic issue that can affect voltage is genetic variation in the genes for superoxide dismutase (SOD), one of our key antioxidant enzymes.
When a person has a chronic infection that causes the body to produce a lot of superoxide to fight an infection, if a deficient or defenctive superoxide dismutase enzyme cannot control superoxide, oxidation escalates into oxidative stress.
The oxidative stress "steals" electrons from unintended targets (our cells), reduces voltage, increases acidity, and reduces oxygenation.
When not controlled, superoxide can combine with nitric oxide (which is also produced to fight infection) to form peroxynitrite, a very destructive oxidant.
This phenomenon of superoxide and nitric acid combining to form peroxynitrite is referred to as the "NO/ONOO cycle" or "NO/ONOO syndrome", where NO stands for nitric oxide, and ONOO stands for peroxynitrite.
This is a characteristic feature of chronic fatigue and has been identified as a potential cause of heart failure, tinnitus. headaches, and migraines.
As an oxidant and "electron stealer", peroxiynitrite reduces voltage, but it has other effects that may even more important, such as altering cell signaling, damaging DNA, and causing cell death.
So the NO/ONOO syndrome is an example of genetics playing into voltage, but its other effects could be more important.
By the way, the NO/ONOO syndrome can be driven by other factors, such as EMFs, ionizing radiation, dysfunctional methylation, and altered function of the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzyme.
An example of genetics causing a problem that probably has nothing to do with voltage is chronic calcium oxalate kidney stones due to primary hyperoxaluria.
This is a genetically-driven deficiency of enzymes that break down certain amino acids, resulting in an accumulation of oxalate, a byproduct of the incomplete breakdown of the amino acids.
Searching for a loss of voltage as a cause of kidney stones would probably be a dead end in cases where they are caused by primary oxaluria.
So a disruption in voltage is not the explanation for everything, and there is still more to include in a unified theory of health and healing.

Hello ,

Chasteberry aka vitex has been a revered and feared herb.
In the Middle Ages, the monks used to give it in high doses to women whose husbands left for the crusades, to contain their desires (and extramarital adventures). In lower doses, it is one of the classical herbs to raise desire (yes, the dosage can have the opposite effect), mood, and support the body’s native way to produce progesterone.

Too often, we go through our days feeling overwhelmed with thoughts about what could or should happen, losing sight of things that bring us joy.

Happy Monday, my fellow health fanatic.

It's my youngest daughter's last day of (home)school, so I'm at my customary local library waiting for her to finish up.

Since this is her last day, that means I'll find a new Monday email writing spot to blow your health-seeking mind.

So let's finish with a bang.

Yesterday, we were at my niece's graduation party.

Yep, graduation party season has begun!!

Among other things, graduation parties mean FOOD.

And, more accurately, food which I didn't buy or prepare.

So, we can't be certain if, what, or how many toxins we're exposed to (like pesticides, herbicides, biotoxins, mold, BPA, phthalates, etc).

My family and I do our best to prepare BEFORE we go to graduation parties or other events.

But the fact is... we all encounter toxins every day.

We eat, drink and breathe them.

We absorb them through our skin.

Even if you’re doing "everything right" regarding your health - filtering your air, drinking clean water, eating organic - you really can’t avoid exposure to them.

This includes my family and I.

Now, I want to put my brain and body in the best possible position to handle family parties and events.

I don't want to miss out on life events.

And I don't think you do either.

What Causes High Blood Pressure?

Much of the time, doctors don’t know why some people develop high blood pressure and others do not. Hypertension that occurs for no known reason is called “essential hypertension,” and it accounts for 90% of the cases (although genetics, obesity, poor diet, and lack of exercise probably play a role).

Special: More Than 50% of Older Americans Fail to Get Enough Magnesium

The other 10% of cases are known as “secondary” hypertension, caused by an underlying medical condition, such as:

• Cushing’s syndrome, in which the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone cortisol

• Coarctation of the aorta, a congenital birth defect that results in a too-narrow aorta (the heart’s main artery)

• Kidney disease

• Aldosteronism, which is a tumor on the adrenal gland

• Thyroid problems

• Sleep apnea, a common sleep disorder

The good news is that when the cause of secondary high blood pressure is found and treated, blood pressure often returns to normal.
