Hey Jimi, - the rise of gluten-free, organic, and delicious processed foods in the last 5 years has been historic.
It’s never been easier to eat processed foods, even if you have a food sensitivity to gluten, dairy, egg, or just want Non-GMO only foods.

Today's diagram comes from a recent 2022 study called “Rethinking healthy eating in light of the gut microbiome.” (full paper here)
In this study, researchers compared the effects of whole-plant foods and processed foods on the gut microbiome and implications for host physiology, immunology, metabolism, and disease risk.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. Crazy right?

This impossibly intelligent life-suit wraps around your entire body, allowing you to feel and interface with the outside world.

If you take good care of it, you'll look and feel young. But neglect it, and age will unfortunately begin to set in.

As usual, mother nature has our backs here. There are a number of powerful skin-nourishing herbs in the forest, but our favorite is a flower known as calendula!

Calendula is the crown jewel of herbal skincare because it is soothing for a range of problems. From rashes to burns to bug bites and even scarring -- calendula is a "heal-all." And it's totally safe for babies, the elderly, and everyone in between.

Plus, it's easy to find in any health food store.

You can bring calendula's healing properties into your everyday life and soothe your skin after each wash by making this incredibly simple herb-infused lotion.

Calendula Lotion:

Calendula lotion is a magical mixture of calendula-infused oil and calendula tea!

Start by preparing the calendula-infused oil with these ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup dried calendula flowers
  • 1/2 cup sunflower oil
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup shea butter
Here's how to make it:

  1. Melt the coconut oil and shea butter in a medium-sized sauce pan, on low heat
  2. Add in the sunflower oil
  3. Sprinkle in the calendula flowers and stir the mixture
  4. Simmer for at least 30 minutes
  5. Strain out the petals
  6. Pour the oil into a glass bowl. Then place the bowl in the freezer and allow it to harden
Then make a strong calendula tea with these ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup dried calendula flowers
  • 2 cups of water
Here's how to make it:

  1. Add the calendula flowers and water to a small sauce pan and stir
  2. Warm over medium-low heat for at least 30 minutes
  3. Strain out the petals
Then the magic happens!

  1. Spoon the hardened calendula-infused oil into a blender
  2. Turn the blender on high
  3. Slowly add in the calendula tea
  4. Blend on the highest setting until the tea water and oil coagulate
  5. Bottle the mixture and keep it in the fridge
Easy peasy, right? Enjoy!

Sugary Drinks Linked to Cancer

In the 2005 movie "Thank You for Smoking," Aaron Eckhart plays Nick Naylor, a spokesman for big tobacco whose job is to convince people that smoking is safe.

When he goes to speak to his son's class, a child comments, "My mommy says smoking kills."

"Is your mommy a doctor?" Nick asks snidely.

"No."

"A scientific researcher of some kind?"

"No."

"Well, then she's hardly a credible expert, is she?" Nick concludes smugly.

In truth, even tobacco companies know about the overwhelming evidence that links cigarettes to cancer.

But there's another crop of cancer-promoting substances that may be just as much of a threat to anyone who indulges in them: sugary drinks.

Sugar-bomb beverages already have been connected to an increased risk of obesity, and we know that obesity increases the risk for liver, kidney, colon, stomach, uterus, ovarian, prostate, and stomach cancers.

Australian researchers have published a study in “Public Health Nutrition” that found that the more sugary drinks people consume, the more likely they are to develop those cancers — and the link remained regardless of a person's size and weight.

So if you were rationalizing that your soda (or sweetened juice or energy drink) habit was okay because you weren't gaining weight, think again.

We suggest that you make water or sparkling water with a spritz of lime or lemon, along with coffee and tea, your beverages of choice.

You'll likely reduce your cancer risk while reducing your risk of Type 2 diabetes and boosting your heart health and brainpower.

QUICK TIP Jimi!!

Dr. Joel Fuhrman was the guest on our Going Integrative Plus member call last week, and someone asked him about low fat diets.

His answer was SUPER wide ranging and comprehensive, and way more balanced than I’d imagine some people would expect from a big plant-based advocate…

but the part that really stuck out to me was when he started going in depth on nuts and seeds.

He said that in every population that had been studied on the topic, no matter if they were vegan, vegetarian, omnivore, heavy meat eaters, etc…

When those populations REMOVED nuts and seeds from their diets, they got MORE cancer, autoimmune and heart problems, and died earlier.

When those populations added MORE nuts and seeds to their diets, they got LESS cancer, autoimmune and heart disease, and lived longer.

So it sounds like a good idea to include some nuts and seeds with your meals and/or as snacks. :)

He then went further to say that of your total nuts and seeds, make sure at least half of them are omega 3 dominant

Which would be walnuts on the nut side, and chia, flax & hemp on the seed side.

So if he’s making a recipe calling for cashews for instance, he swaps half the amount for walnuts and/or one of those seeds.

And I’d go further to say that WE make sure to soak all of our nuts and seeds for optimum nutrient absorption!

Whenever we get a new bag we’ll usually just soak and then dehydrate the whole thing to make it easy. :)

Anyway… like I said that just jumped out at me, hope it was something quick and easy for you to “digest” and take action on. :)

The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying.


Happy Friday, my fellow fulfilled life seeker.

Typically, Friday is my "next week prep" day so that's why you may not receive an email on these days.

But, it didn't feel right to disconnect from you today, especially when I was reminded of the following yesterday.

I was listening to a radio show and the host mentioned the passing of actor, James Caan.

That got me thinking about an article from an Australian nurse who worked with the dying. She listed the top 5 things that people regret on their deathbed.

Here they are:

1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

2. I wish I didn’t work so hard.

3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.

4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.


Makes you think, doesn't it?

Well, it sure makes me think and feel about how I want to live my life, to take care of myself and be fulfilled with my friends and family.

I don't want to add anything to the list, except to say this.

Maybe it'll help us to break us out of our daily grind.

To help direct us to the things we truly value and are important in our lives.

To set us on the path to make things right in our lives.

And, that's why I wanted to share it with you today.

*- Many young adults have misconceptions of health risks of sun exposure -*

You might think everyone knows by now to protect against the sun's rays, but many Gen Zers apparently haven't gotten the message.

In a recent survey of 1,000 U.S. adults by the American Academy of Dermatology, many of these 18- to 25-year-olds were unaware of the risks from tanning.

About 60% of Gen Z respondents said they got a tan in 2021. About 27% said they thought having a base tan decreased the risk of developing skin cancer (it doesn't). Another 38% said tanning was safe as long as they didn't burn -- another fallacy.

"It's frustrating that people still think a tan looks healthy and that a base tan is going to protect you," said Dr. Brittany Craiglow, associate professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine. "Just because you're not burning doesn't mean your skin isn't getting damaged."

In fact, it only takes one blistering sunburn during childhood or adolescence to nearly double a person's odds of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, the academy said. Tanning of any kind, whether from the sun, tanning beds or sun lamps, increases your skin cancer risk.

"All that UV damage is cumulative so what you're doing now will affect you in your future," Craiglow said in an academy news release.

The survey showed some other key misconceptions about sun protection among Gen Zers: 54% thought an SPF 30 offers twice as much protection as SPF 15; 39% say high SPF can be applied less often, and 23% were unaware that sunscreen should be reapplied at least every two hours when outdoors.

In addition, almost half didn't know you can get sunburned on a cloudy day. About 37% were unaware that the sun's UV rays can penetrate clothing, and almost 3 in 10 didn't know that shade protects against UV rays.

Craiglow offered her own cautionary tale. She said she didn't think much about the multiple sunburns she had as a child until she was diagnosed with skin cancer in her mid-20s.

"When I was in medical school, I went to a dermatologist for a non-healing spot on my back," she said. "My dermatologist performed a biopsy, and I was diagnosed with basal cell skin cancer. Since then, I have had regular skin exams."

Once she became a dermatologist, Craiglow knew the signs of skin cancer to look for. Over the years, she has had multiple basal cell skin cancers and then, a year ago, she was diagnosed with melanoma.

More than half of Gen Z survey respondents said they wished they had done more to protect themselves when they were younger. About 22% said they already see signs of sun damage. About 28% were unaware that sun exposure would age their skin.

"Not many people want wrinkles and age spots on their skin," Craiglow said. "But the 4-inch scar on my arm from my melanoma surgery is even scarier than these signs of premature aging."

If you notice a spot on your skin that is different from others or that changes, itches or bleeds, you should see a dermatologist, Craiglow said.

In the meantime, seek shade when you can, especially when the sun's rays are strongest, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Wear sun-protective clothing, such as a lightweight and long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection, when possible. Select clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) number on the label.

Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to all skin not covered by clothing. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
