Chronic inflammation may be the root cause of many diseases. Here are some common diseases caused by inflammation and how you can put out the fire:

Heart disease. According to research, people who consume five or more servings of nuts per week have lower levels of certain inflammation markers. The best choices to reduce your risk of heart disease are almonds, pistachios, walnuts, cashews, Brazil nuts, and hazelnuts.
Alzheimer’s. Inflammation can be seen in the brains of people prone to Alzheimer’s disease as early as 20 years before the onset. Protect your brain with healthy fatty foods like salmon, rich in omega-3 fatty acids. You can also take fat-soluble vitamins such as A, C, E, and K.
Cancer. Insufficient vitamin D has been associated with many diseases, but research shows that taking this vitamin along with losing weight reduces the risk of inflammation dramatically in women with breast cancer.

FORWARD​

It’s a new year and a fresh start. But sometimes at this time of year, it’s easy to feel the opposite. We think about the year that has passed and all that we didn’t accomplish, and we feel a sense of regret. And then a wave of foreboding washes over us…will this year be the same? Will I be here next year feeling the same way about this year?
But what we think is the best route, is the best timeline, are the right steps, may not be. I never could have imagined or planned the steps and choices and events that had to happen to get me here. We’re afraid things won’t work out as we’ve planned, but often, that’s a good thing. I’ve seen over and again in my life that things end up being even better or more interesting than we could have hoped for, or they make us grow more than we would have on the path we thought we should have been on, or they transform us in ways we didn’t even know we wanted or needed to be transformed.
This can be hard for a planner like me. I like order, I like organisation…let’s be honest, I like control. I know this stems from the tumult of a few events in my childhood, but most impactful was my father’s death. The reverberations of that loss had a few different effects on me that would shape the person I became in many ways, some of which I’m now trying to release, repair, or recreate. One of those ways was an anxiety over control and giving it up. I don’t like to give it up.
This can be good sometimes. It makes me very organised, it keeps me focused, and it certainly motivates me; it served me well in many ways on my healing journey. However, it also means I take on too much, I don’t delegate enough, and I don’t ask for help as much as I should. It means stress, it means being hard on myself, and it means regret when I don’t accomplish the things I’ve set for myself in the time I gave myself, because that feels like I’ve failed to control the outcome effectively.
But now, on the other side of cancer - a situation that forces you to look at life and realise that there are some things you simply can’t control - I recognise that that regret or upset or guilt is absolutely not something I should place on myself, and I’m working to do so less and less often.
Don’t lament the time that has passed and the things that you didn’t do, the choices that you made or had to make. What is meant for you will not pass you by. What happened, and didn’t happen, is exactly what got you to this point right now, and it’s the point you’re meant to be at.
Start the year by looking forward, not looking back. Instead of the cement blocks of disappointment, dissatisfaction, and remorse that shackle you to the past, tether yourself instead to excitement, curiosity, and hope. Enter the new year with an open mind and an open heart. Give up that control, just a little bit.

Pumpkin Spice Chocolate Banana Bread! Ooo this is one of my absolute favourites, and I haven’t made it in forever, so this has been a good reminder. This cake is soft, fluffy, chocolatey, and full of warm, holiday spices. And it’s totally grain, dairy, and refined sugar free! You also can use green bananas instead and adjust the maple syrup/sweetener level if you are watching your natural sugars too. It’s a wonderful addition to any dessert table that even people not on special diets will love!

Resources: Advanced Alternative Therapies​

You may have read my blog above on mistletoe, and if you are now interested in learning more about it, I have another of my own resources to share with you and one from Dr. Lori. Resources: Support Organizations​

Registration for First Descents 2023 programs opens this month! If you haven't heard me mention them before, First Descents is a non-profit organization that offers outdoor adventure programs to young adults ages 18-45 who have been impacted by cancer and multiple sclerosis, their caregivers, and to healthcare workers.

I participated in an unreal rock climbing trip with FD in 2018, and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I spent a week in Estes Park, Colorado with a group of other young adults who knew exactly what I had gone through, healing and growing and adventuring together with some of the most incredible volunteers who include a professional photographer (so you can be present and enjoy and not be worried about taking your own pics), a nurse, and two professional chefs.

And did I mention that it's FREE? You have to get yourself there, but they offer travel bursaries. I think I paid about $100 total towards my plane ticket. Visit their website here to learn more and to sign up for their newsletter so you will be notified once registration officially opens.

In my first year after diagnosis, I started to have realizations about different things I was learning from cancer: ways I was changing, positive growth I was experiencing, and how my perspective on life was shifting. I started writing them down, and it is something that I continue today. Protecting Your Eyes as You Age

In 2012, actress Dame Judi Dench told the press that her eyesight was failing, and she was unable to read her scripts. The solution? Her daughter and her agent would help her learn lines.
Now in her late 80s, Dame Judi had been diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a common eye disorder that can cause blindness.

By 2050, it’s estimated that nearly 22 million older Americans will have to contend with some form of this condition.
But AMD isn’t the only vision problem that can develop as you get older. The most common are glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts.
More than 6 million Americans over age 65 have some type of vision problem. That’s why it’s important to take steps at every age to protect your eyes. Here are a few good ones:
• Eat eye-friendly foods that are rich in nutrients such as beta carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, omega-3 fatty acids, and zinc. That means plenty of orange vegetables such as sweet potatoes, carrots, and squash, as well as cooked tomatoes. Choose dark leafy greens, berries, nuts and seeds, brown rice, and citrus, which also are high in vitamins A, C, D, and E. And enjoy fatty fish like ocean trout and salmon.
• Quit smoking or never start. It’s linked to an increased risk of AMD, cataracts, and optic nerve damage.
• Use sunglasses. Find ones that block out 99%-100% of UVA and UVB radiation.
• Don’t do digital damage. Break up computer and screen time. Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds.
