Ward Off Inflammation Before Heart Disease Strikes

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

Your body can be exposed to inflammation in many ways that are under your control. If you have belly fat, gum or autoimmune disease, a poor diet, or a smoking habit, these are all sources of inflammation and you are at increased risk for a heart attack.

What’s more, heart disease can develop without any obvious symptoms, so you have to make sure that your doctor is aware of your risk factors and will monitor you carefully.

Special: Disease-Fighting Antioxidants — Tea's Healing Powers Are Remarkable!

Even if you don’t have one of these conditions, chronic, low-level inflammation is not healthy. Here are some steps to reduce it:

  • Practice good dental care.
  • Lose weight. Getting rid of belly fat helps reduce inflammation.
  • Take vitamin C daily; recommended dosage is 2,000 mg per day.
  • Daily low-dose aspirin therapy. The same daily low-dose aspirin (81mg) you may already be taking also helps lower inflammation, reducing heart disease and colon cancer risk.
  • Mediterranean diet. High in fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish, and “healthy oils” like olive oil, this diet lowers inflammation and has been shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks.
  • Fish oil. A daily dose of 2,000 mg of fish oil helps reduce inflammation. Be sure to buy your fish oil supplements from a trusted source because poor-quality and counterfeit products are a problem.
  • Eat cherries. Fresh fruit is a very good way to lower inflammation, and research shows that cherries are particularly effective. This inflammation-reducing property also makes them a pain reliever. Drink a small glass of organic unsweetened cherry juice or eat a handful of cherries daily.
  • Juicing. Combining healthful vegetables into a juicer creates inflammation-reducing beverages.

Your mental health can significantly affect cancer outcomes.

Studies show that people with untreated depression and anxiety may have worse cancer outcomes due to a weakened immune response, poor adherence to treatment, and unhealthy lifestyle behaviors.

Comprehensive care for cancer patients should include mental health support to improve both physical and emotional wellness.

Another core memory might be when you felt a breast lump.

You remember the moment like it was yesterday: the place, the mood, your own feelings around the event.

I can certainly remember when I found my first lump; it was on the left breast and I was just 30.

Is it cancer? How do I get it diagnosed? Is it from all the drinking and smoking in college?

The shame, the fear, the overwhelm.

As I’m 51 now, I wish I knew what I know now - and that is to take care of my breasts (aka "sisters") before lumps of any kind start manifesting.

Yet, it is such a common condition that we assume it’s normal. Lumps and cysts are never normal or OK.

Do NOT fall into the "it’s so common, it must be normal” trap. It’s not normal and it won’t serve you well to think that.

Breast lumps/cysts, ER+ BC, fibrocystic breasts, and painful, enlarged breasts are your sisters’ way of saying three things:

1. We’re not clearing estrogen very well (due to Estrogen Dominance)
2. Our lymphatic system is stagnant
3. We’re inflamed

Just like any other symptom, your "sisters" are telling you what help they need.

In today’s article, we cover an array of topics from foods, iodine, and magnesium, all the way to bra choices and movement - all to help your sisters feel good again.

Your sisters’ suffering is optional. There are solutions.

Making Breast Health Your Daily Routine

You brush your teeth twice a day?
You daily apply facial cream?
You regularly move your body?

What about doing something regularly for your breasts?

The breasts and the underarms are some of the most lymphatically active areas of your body. This is also where stagnation happens.

A quick daily breast massage can go a long way.

You can use regular oil (like jojoba, coconut oil etc) and if you want a quick-absorbing

So if you’ve been losing your keys, forgetting phone numbers, or struggling with brain fog…

You could be experiencing the early signs of cognitive decline.

And I know firsthand how SCARY it can be.

Hi Jimi,
You’ve likely heard the terms “Alzheimer’s” and “dementia” used interchangeably, but they aren’t the same thing. Understanding the difference is key to providing the right care.

Dementia is a broad term that describes a decline in cognitive abilities, including memory, reasoning, and decision-making. It encompasses several types of cognitive impairment, such as vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and mixed dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, but it is a distinct condition with its own specific characteristics.
Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurodegenerative disease marked by the build-up of beta-amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain. These changes disrupt normal brain function, leading to memory loss, confusion, and personality changes. However, it’s important to know that Alzheimer’s is not an inevitable part of aging, even if you carry genetic risk factors like APOE-ε4. Many lifestyle choices, including nutrition, exercise, quality sleep, and stress management, can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and even slow or reverse early cognitive decline.

The distinction between Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia is critical in guiding treatment and care strategies. If you or someone you love is noticing early signs of cognitive decline, getting the right diagnosis can make all the difference in finding effective solutions.

In my work, I focus on preventing—and in some cases, reversing—Alzheimer’s by addressing its root causes. There are concrete steps you can take today to safeguard your brain health and improve your quality of life as you age.

If you’re interested in learning more, I invite you to join one of my upcoming talks or explore my book, Reversing Alzheimer’s: The New Toolkit to Improve Cognition and Protect Brain Health, where I share the latest research and practical strategies. Signed copies are available here.

Let’s work together to protect your cognitive health and build a brighter future.

Warmly,
Dr. Heather Sandison, ND

P.S. I recently joined Dr. Gillian on her podcast to discuss Alzheimer’s prevention and holistic approaches to cognitive health. We covered strategies like brain training, lifestyle changes, and actionable steps you can take to lower your risk of cognitive decline. I encourage you to listen if you’re looking for tips on staying sharp at any age.

8-Week Vegan Diet May Help to Slow Biological Aging

While many people are aware that a vegan diet can improve heart health and reduce chronic disease risk, a recent study published in BMC Medicine suggests that following a vegan diet for just eight weeks might also help slow down biological aging.

Researchers conducted a parallel study of 21 pairs of identical twins, comparing the effects of an 8-week calorie-restricted vegan diet with an omnivorous diet. They assessed various aging markers, including inflammation, heart health, hormone levels, liver function, and metabolism, while also analyzing changes in DNA-related health markers.

What the study found is that those who followed a vegan diet experienced a notable reduction in their epigenetic age, which reflects biological age based on DNA markers rather than chronological age. Additionally, they experienced improvements in the metabolic age of multiple bodily systems, such as the heart and liver—benefits not observed in those following an omnivorous diet. The vegan group also lost more weight, which may have contributed to these outcomes.

Your Walking Speed May Predict Your Future Health

Your gait speed—how fast you walk—is an important indicator of mental and physical decline in older adults. Plus, research shows that changes in gait speed in midlife may provide early warnings about future health issues, giving you a chance to make improvements.

In one study, researchers examined data from 904 45-year-old participants in New Zealand. Participants’ gait speed was measured using three walking conditions: usual gait speed (walking normally), dual task (walking while saying the alphabet out loud), and maximum gait speeds (walking as fast as possible).

The study found that slower gait was linked to more physical limitations, weaker grip strength, poorer balance, and lower visual-motor coordination. It was also associated with signs of accelerated aging, such as an older facial appearance and changes in brain structure. This research underscores that gait speed is not just about mobility—it's a comprehensive measure of health that can signal the need for early interventions to prevent future health problems.

Thinking So Hard That It Hurts? You’re Not Imagining It
If you’ve ever worked through something that’s mentally grueling and felt like “my brain hurts,” you’re not the only one. Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 170 different studies on a variety of populations, using the NASA Task Load Index to measure how effortful and unpleasant tasks felt. What they found is that high-effort tasks are often experienced as unpleasant by the brain. Balancing those tasks with rewards can make the gain outweigh the pain. (More)
10 Ways to Keep Your Hair Strong & Thick as You Age
Aging can cause more than gray hair. As we get older, our hair can lose its shape and thickness, even falling out and thinning. That’s because hair diameter begins to decrease as we age, while some hair follicles can stop producing new hairs altogether. To keep your hair looking its best, avoid products that contain sulfates, parabens, silicon, and phthalates—as well as over (or under) washing. (More)
High Diastolic Blood Pressure May Raise Migraine Risk for Women
While researchers have long known there’s a link between cardiovascular events and migraines, they didn’t know the reason for the connection. These findings underscore the importance of maintaining healthy blood pressure levels, not only for heart health but to help prevent migraines. (More)

The fairies the children see in the garden are really there. The adults tell them they're not real, just figments of the imagination, so the children give up, and don't see those sweet lovely fairies anymore.

The adults help children narrow their minds, but the adults can't help it. It was done to them when they were children.

i know what we will do jimi, if food upsets us, then we can sit down eat everything in sight, then chuck it up!

I'll tell ya Walton, I tried that a couple of times in college. When you're a binge-diet-binge person with an unhealthy preoccupation with weight, you'll try almost anything. I am certainly way beyond that now, and thankful to be, but this is what I found out: It is HARD to make yourself barf your meal, and it ruins any pleasure you had from the meal. The acids in vomit can ruin your teeth if you don't run and rinse your mouth, then brush and floss immediately. Lots of young women do it, and they end up with ruined physical and mental health.
