Symptoms of Liver Disease

As with all diseases, early diagnosis and treatment of liver problems will give the best outcome. Unfortunately, many liver disorders do not present specific symptoms until the damage is rather advanced.

Yet the liver can be quite resilient against diseases, mostly because of its powerful detoxification systems and incredible regenerative ability. Most of us are familiar with the yellow tint of the skin and whites of the eyes of people with liver damage, known as jaundice. The yellow color indicates a buildup of the compound bilirubin in the skin and the sclera of eyes.

Special: Doctor Reveals Little-Known Immune Health Secret

In most cases, those are the first signs of liver problems. Early jaundice occurs commonly with viral hepatitis, chemical-induced hepatitis, obstruction of the bile ducts, and liver cancer.

Other signs and symptoms of liver disorders include:

• Pain in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen (just under the ribs)

• Sudden weight loss

• A swollen, protruding abdomen from fluid buildup (called ascites, this occurs later)

• Swelling of the legs and ankles, usually associated with ascites

• Itchy skin

• Dark urine due to high levels of bilirubin

• Chronic fatigue, extreme tiredness, and exhaustion

• Pale stool that may contain streaks of blood or be tar colored

• Nausea and vomiting

You may have heard a lot of chatter about frozen fruits and vegetables not being as nutritious as fresh fruits and vegetables. We’ll just come right out and say it, don’t believe everything you hear. The truth is, in some cases, fruits and vegetables you find in the freezer section can be healthier than their fresh counterparts. Here are a few reasons why.

Frozen Fruits and Veggies Are at Their Prime​

From the very moment that a fruit or vegetable is harvested, its nutrient content begins to decline. There are two factors which affect the nutritional value. One is how mature it is when it is picked. The other is how long after harvesting it is eaten. Typically, fruits and vegetables which are destined for the freezer are allowed to fully ripen before they are harvested, and they are frozen soon after they are picked. This means they are still rich in vitamins which are often under-consumed such as vitamins E, C, K, and folate and minerals like magnesium, zinc, and iron.

Frozen Fruits and Veggies Retain Nutrients​

In many cases, frozen fruits and veggies are just as nutrient-rich as fresh produce, if not more so. This is because fresh produce is often in transit for several days before it reaches the shelves. During transportation, beneficial nutrients such as antioxidants like lutein, polyphenols, and beta-carotene begin to deteriorate. These nutrients will continue to decline, even when produce is refrigerated. However, the freezing process does not destroy these nutrients; it protects them.

Frozen Fruits and Veggies are Additive-free​

Contrary to what many people believe, no unwanted substances are added to bags frozen produce, so all you’ll find on the ingredients list is the fruit or vegetable in the bag. If you want fruits and veggies that will last longer than fresh items, frozen items are always a better option than canned goods, as the latter contain additives and preservatives which have a negative impact on their nutritional value.

Frozen Fruits and Veggies are Super Versatile​

If you are a fan of seasonal fruits and vegetables, you may begin to miss strawberries and bell peppers during the winter months. But you will be able to find them in the freezer section year-round. You can keep your freezer stocked with your favorite fruits and veggies and use them whenever you wish to. Frozen produce also makes cooking very convenient because they cut out all the preparation time.

The Bottom Line​

Eating a diet that’s rich in fruits and vegetables can reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain forms of cancer. Fruits and vegetables also have a high fiber content, which can also reduce your risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Although freezing may slightly alter the flavor and composition of a particular fruit or vegetable, sometimes this can prove to be more beneficial. Hands down, there is no specific winner when it comes to fresh vs. frozen fruits and vegetables as it will depend on where you buy your produce and the process which is used to freeze them. It will also depend on the particular fruit or vegetable.
Choose fresh fruits and veggies which are locally grown so that you can be sure they are at their best. If you are buying frozen fruits and veggies, look for items which are labeled as “individually quick frozen” so you can be sure they are the highest quality.

Generally Recognized as Safe?​

Since the George H.W. Bush Administration, the FDA has treated genetically engineered synthetics the same as normal foods, allowing them to be approved without safety-testing or post-market monitoring through the “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) loophole.
President Donald Trump could change this. His new Health & Human Services Department, which includes the Food & Drug Administration, is expected to be very different from his last.
There are five GMOs Trump’s new FDA could take off the market (four his old FDA put on the market): Monsanto (now Eli Lilly)’s Posilac GMO growth hormone for dairy cows; AquaBounty’s AquAdvantage GMO salmon; Impossible Food’s synbio burger made with fake blood; Bored Cow’s “milk,” made with Perfect Day’s faux whey protein; and lab-grown chicken made by UPSIDE Foods and GOOD Meat.

Here are five GMOs Trump’s new team should take off the market (four are GMOs his old team put on the market):
1. POSILAC – The genetically engineered growth hormone (aka rbGH/rbST) that makes cows produce so much milk their udders painfully swell, causing ulcers that ooze pus into the milk that’s also contaminated with a growth factor (IGF-1) linked to cancer.
2. AQUADVANTAGE SALMON – Salmon that’s genetically engineered to grow unnaturally fast by producing growth hormones year-round. GMO salmon has increased levels of IGF-1, a hormone linked to cancer. It has less of the healthy omega-3 fats than normal salmon and it is more likely to trigger an allergy.
3. IMPOSSIBLE BURGER – Impossible Food’s “bleeding” veggie burger made with synthetic blood that’s spit out of genetically engineered yeast. Preliminary animal lab data submitted by Impossible Foods indicated potential health risks including blood clot issues, anemia, and kidney damage.
4. BORED COW – Perfect Day’s synthetic whey protein, made from genetically engineered microbes. It’s the single ingredient in Bored Cow’s “milk.” Trump’s FDA gave it GRAS status in 2020 even though the whey was contaminated with heavy metals and GMO fungal proteins that are similar to known allergens.
5. LAB-GROWN “CHICKEN” – The Biden Administration FDA made two approvals of what they call “Human Food Made with Cultured Animal Cells,” one in 2022 for UPSIDE Foods and the other in 2023 for GOOD Meat. No one’s eating it yet, because neither company can figure out a cost-effective way to grow the chicken without antimicrobials we shouldn’t eat.

Newly Identified Chemical in Drinking Water Is Most Likely Present in Many Homes and Could Be Toxic​

“About a third of U.S. residents have been receiving tap water containing a previously unidentified chemical byproduct, a new study has found. Some scientists are now concerned — and actively investigating — whether that chemical could be toxic.
The newly identified substance, named 'chloronitramide anion,' is produced when water is treated with chloramine, a chemical formed by mixing chlorine and ammonia. Chloramine is often used to kill viruses and bacteria in municipal water treatment systems.
Researchers said the existence of the byproduct was discovered about 40 years ago, but it was only identified now because analysis techniques have improved, which finally enabled scientists to determine the chemical’s structure.
The researchers reported their findings Thursday in the journal Science, in part to spur research to address safety concerns.”

Mexico Restricting Cultivation of GMO Corn Due to Health Risks​

“A new scientific analysis prepared by CONAHCYT, Mexico’s National Council for Humanities, Science and Technology, argues there are unacceptable health risks for Mexican people who consume genetically modified (GM) corn and glyphosate, the world’s most widely used herbicide.
The 200-page document with 1,200 references – posted here for the first time in English – underpins Mexico’s 2023 decree to restrict the use of GM corn in tortillas and other minimally processed corn products, and to phase out the use of glyphosate. The U.S. challenged those policies as unfair trade practice under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). A decision in that case is expected imminently.
Whatever the ruling, Mexico’s new President Claudia Sheinbaum has said her government will not allow the cultivation of GM corn. Sheinbaum also recently announced plans to try to place GM corn restrictions in Mexico’s constitution; ‘this is the best defense we have for biodiversity as well as for our health,’ she said.”

UN Plastic Treaty Talks End Without a Deal​

“United Nations members had meant to use this past week to work out how to end plastic pollution. Instead they return to their homes empty-handed from the coastal South Korean city of Busan.

Talks collapsed late Sunday after negotiators failed to resolve their differences and agree on a global plastic treaty. At the heart of the disagreement was a refusal by oil-rich nations led by Saudi Arabia to accept a deal that put limits on plastic production.

EU negotiator Hugo Schally expressed the ‘regret of many in the room this didn’t happen, despite the tireless efforts of so many of us including many stakeholders who worked until the morning hours in the hope of securing a successful result,’ in his address to the final plenary.”

Despite Critics, Organic Farming Thrives in Heart of U.S. Corn Country​

With just shy of 800 residents, West Bend, Iowa is barely a blip on a prairie landscape, but it has become home base for an uncommonly large expanse of organically grown crops- operations that have found success in challenging the popular convention that pesticides and other agricultural chemicals are needed to feed the world.
Towering grain bins are surrounded by close to 50,000 acres of corn, soybeans, oats and other crops grown without the use of synthetic chemicals. Farmers fertilize the land with chicken litter and hog manure and weed much of the land by hand, or with non-chemical tools, such as new laser weeders.”

Generally Recognized as Safe?​

Since the George H.W. Bush Administration, the FDA has treated genetically engineered synthetics the same as normal foods, allowing them to be approved without safety-testing or post-market monitoring through the “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) loophole.
President Donald Trump could change this. His new Health & Human Services Department, which includes the Food & Drug Administration, is expected to be very different from his last.
There are five GMOs Trump’s new FDA could take off the market (four his old FDA put on the market): Monsanto (now Eli Lilly)’s Posilac GMO growth hormone for dairy cows; AquaBounty’s AquAdvantage GMO salmon; Impossible Food’s synbio burger made with fake blood; Bored Cow’s “milk,” made with Perfect Day’s faux whey protein; and lab-grown chicken made by UPSIDE Foods and GOOD Meat.
Here are five GMOs Trump’s new team should take off the market (four are GMOs his old team put on the market):
1. POSILAC – The genetically engineered growth hormone (aka rbGH/rbST) that makes cows produce so much milk their udders painfully swell, causing ulcers that ooze pus into the milk that’s also contaminated with a growth factor (IGF-1) linked to cancer.
2. AQUADVANTAGE SALMON – Salmon that’s genetically engineered to grow unnaturally fast by producing growth hormones year-round. GMO salmon has increased levels of IGF-1, a hormone linked to cancer. It has less of the healthy omega-3 fats than normal salmon and it is more likely to trigger an allergy.
3. IMPOSSIBLE BURGER – Impossible Food’s “bleeding” veggie burger made with synthetic blood that’s spit out of genetically engineered yeast. Preliminary animal lab data submitted by Impossible Foods indicated potential health risks including blood clot issues, anemia, and kidney damage.
4. BORED COW – Perfect Day’s synthetic whey protein, made from genetically engineered microbes. It’s the single ingredient in Bored Cow’s “milk.” Trump’s FDA gave it GRAS status in 2020 even though the whey was contaminated with heavy metals and GMO fungal proteins that are similar to known allergens.
5. LAB-GROWN “CHICKEN” – The Biden Administration FDA made two approvals of what they call “Human Food Made with Cultured Animal Cells,” one in 2022 for UPSIDE Foods and the other in 2023 for GOOD Meat. No one’s eating it yet, because neither company can figure out a cost-effective way to grow the chicken without antimicrobials we shouldn’t eat.
