Vitamin Deficiency Triggers Migraines

Almost 40 million people in the U.S. have been diagnosed and treated for migraine. That adds up to more than 160 million workdays lost every year — not to mention the severe pain and misery the headaches cause.
Migraine triggers vary from person to person. Stress, hormone shifts, irregular eating patterns, sleep disturbances, alcohol, smoking, and even pickled foods may set one off.

But a new study has identified a universal trigger that may come as a surprise: vitamin D deficiency.
It seems that a deficiency of vitamin D may allow increased inflammation, especially neurovascular inflammation in the brain that affects the way the endothelial cells lining blood vessels regulate blood flow.
And that’s not confined to any demographic. Vitamin D deficiency is related to migraine for all ages, genders, races, and incomes.
If you're a migraine sufferer, get a blood test to check your vitamin D level. If it’s low, take 1,000 IU of D3 daily, or more if recommended.
And focus on foods that contain vitamin D, such as mushrooms, salmon, sardines, and fortified tofu and cereals (with no added sugar).
Exposure to sunlight is also important.
In most of the U.S., spending 5-30 minutes in the midday sun — without sunscreen — between February and November three or more times per week is enough to maintain healthy levels among light-skinned people. For darker skin, it takes more time; one study recommends dark-skinned men opt for 90 minutes of sun exposure three times a week.

Did you know prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men and affects 3.6 million men in the United States? If a man lives long enough, they will almost certainly develop prostate cancer in their lifetime.



The normal cycle of healthy cells is to mature, divide, then die. About 30 trillion cells make up your body; some of them malfunction, but under normal circumstances, there are guardrails where your body rids itself of such aberrant cells.




How do cancer cells behave differently than normal cells?



Unlike normal cells, cancer cells divide uncontrollably and don’t die. Cancer cells ignore programmed cell death or apoptosis cues and continue to live and replicate. Many cancer cells divide more rapidly than normal cells, making it hard for them to be caught and eliminated by the body. Lastly, cancer cells spread and find a home in other tissues, unlike normal cells, which stay in place. For example, under normal circumstances, you would never find lung cells in the prostate or vice versa. Cancer cells can begin in one part of the body and spread far distant than its starting point.



What causes prostate cancer cells to form?



Certain factors increase the risk of developing prostate cancer, including inherited genes, particularly any paternal family history of prostate cancer. So does exposure to environmental chemicals found in plastics and byproducts from cooking meat from animals at high heat. In addition, excess body fat increases the risk of more severe prostate cancer by up to 40%.



How can you prevent prostate cancer development and progression?



You can’t choose your parents, or the genes handed off to you, but you can alter those genes and keep them well-behaved to avoid cancer cell development and progression. Can You Exercise AFib Away?

New research suggests exercise might ease the severity of atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common abnormal heart rhythm affecting millions of Americans where the upper chambers of the heart quiver in a fast, irregular heartbeat.

When people with AFIB participated in a six-month exercise program called ACTIVE-AF, they were able to maintain a normal heart rhythm and had less-severe symptoms than those who only received information about the benefits of exercise. The benefits lasted for at least one year.

Everyone in the study continued their usual AFib medications. After one year, the AFib recurrence rate was 60% in the exercise group, compared to 80% in the advice-only group. Recurrence was defined as having an AFib episode that lasted longer than 30 seconds, undergoing an ablation procedure, or requiring ongoing anti-arrhythmic drug therapy.

People in the exercise group also had fewer heart palpations and less shortness of breath and fatigue at one year compared to those folks in the advice-only group.

All of our lives, we've been conditioned to believe that our only option for chronic disease is conventional medicine.

And practically every other commercial on TV in the U.S. is a drug commercial with a long list of serious side effects, including "may increase your risk of certain types of cancer."

We've been brainwashed to blindly follow doctors' orders… with the assumption that conventional treatments are the best available and the only ones "proven by science."

This week’s Balanced Bite is a delicious way to enjoy kale and give your body the support it needs:

Grilled Zucchini and Kale Salad

Ingredients
  • 2 cups kale (leaves torn from the stems and chopped)
  • 1/2 small zucchini, sliced into thin ribbons
  • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 pinch coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 1/4 cup cashew halves, lightly toasted

Directions

  1. Heat an indoor or outdoor grill over medium-high and lightly coat with cooking spray.
  2. Grill the zucchini ribbons until slightly charred, about 1 minute. Set aside.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the kale with the dressing. Massage for 5 minutes until the kale softens.
  5. Add the grilled zucchini to the kale and toss gently.
  6. Transfer to a serving plate and sprinkle with toasted cashews.
Add your favorite protein to turn it into a complete meal!

Remember, small, simple choices like this can make a big difference for your hormones and your health.​
