Vitamin C Helps Enhance Heart Health

COLORADO—A recent study conducted at the University of Colorado and presented at the American Physiological Society’s International Conference in Georgia found that vitamin C helps boost heart health, especially for those who are overweight.

The study included about 50 participants who were told to consume vitamin C daily or participate in aerobic exercise (walking) daily for 3 months. The researchers compared the effects of consuming vitamin C and exercise had heart health.

The team found that adding vitamin C to your daily diet was just as beneficial as daily exercise in boosting your heart health. Specifically, vitamin C helps reduce the proteins that constrict small vessels ability to receive blood flow, which increases the risk of heart disease.

According to Health.com, the following foods are rich in vitamin C:
  • Peppers (red and green bell peppers)
  • Kale
  • Broccoli and cauliflower
  • Fruit (oranges, strawberries, pineapple, kiwi, and mangos)

If you are interested in boosting your heart health, you might want to consider adding vitamin C to your daily diet.

Best and worst alcohol + no-hangovers wine for the holidays

Let me be clear and upfront: I am not encouraging you to drink alcohol if you haven’t been doing so already. But, if you plan to have a drink here and there over the holiday period, I thought I would let you know what the best and worst options are. In the health space, we categorize alcohol from best to worst by gauging the amount of:
  • histamine release, and
  • impurities it contains.
In regards to impurities, the “smoother” the alcohol tastes, the better it is made. Remember the tequila shots we used to do in college? We had to get it down quickly to get over the awful taste. That was the “college” tequila—cheap and poorly made (but affordable).
You can enjoy and sip a top-shelf tequila—it contains less impurities which will make it easier on your liver, thus I would call it a “healthier” choice with less chances for a hangover.
Histamine release will also contribute to how you feel; headaches, itching, rashes, ringing in the ears and flashing are signs of histamine release which would also make you feel sick.
I’ve put this list for you here to give you an idea what might be best for you when you go shopping.

I don’t have brand recommendations for liquor brands, but I have come across great wine that our Hormones Balance community has given a seal of approval in the past. We’ve partnered up with Dry Farm Wines for truly biodynamic, low histamine and no-sugar (yes, this is correct, they ferment it until there is no sugar) wine selections of whites, reds and roses.
Not all wine is made equal. Who here has suffered from a rash, hives, headaches, or major hangovers after a couple glasses of wine? Or maybe you’ve said at a dinner party: “I can’t drink like I used to.”
The problem is how conventional wines are made. They’re rife with preservatives, clarifying agents, colorants, antioxidants, acidifiers and de-acidifiers, and stabilizers. They undergo intense processing, making the wine unrecognizable from the grapes it came from.
Fortunately, there are wines out there that minimize processing, with no extra ingredients. These bottles of “natural wine” are low in sugar, contain no preservatives, and minimize the risk for nasty hangovers. Let me tell you a story about my experience with natural wines in Sicily.
How I learned about natural wines
Two summers ago, I went to an olive oil farm in Sicily. The farmer was also a winemaker.
He invited me to dinner, and as much as I was looking forward to it, I remember thinking I needed to work the next day, so I couldn’t indulge in too much wine. I couldn’t risk the hangover.
At dinner, I found myself in such good company; neighboring winemakers and farmers brought their own goods, and they were so passionate about their craft. I was charmed, and it was too hard to say no to each new glass of wine. I probably drank a complete bottle over the course of the night. Walking back to my house, a little tipsy, I thought I would be paying the price for this the next morning.
I awoke the next day, waiting for that nasty hangover to strike. But, I felt almost nothing.
The next day effects were no worse than if I had just sipped on a single glass of wine.
I joined my host the next morning for breakfast. I asked, “how do you make that wine?” I couldn’t believe how good I felt.

“Does organic food really help prevent cancer?”

Whether you are hoping to avoid cancer or treat it successfully…

As you may know, the food you eat plays a significant role in your treatment plan.

When it comes to cancer and food choices, most people know that you’re better off avoiding super-processed and “junk” foods as much as possible.

That includes packaged foods with long lists of ingredients that you can’t pronounce and the fatty, sugary treats that come in most fast foods.

When people try to improve their diet, they often try to eat more “fresh food.” Most times, this means eating more produce.

But then that raises a question:

Do I need to buy organic or not?

You may wonder if organic fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meat products are that much better for you.

Or if it’s worth the investment.

Do organic foods actually help to prevent cancer in any way?

Well, actually, yes.

There is more and more evidence that eating organic foods helps to decrease the risk of cancer. Even further, foods that aren’t organic can increase the potential for cancer.

Just two years ago, a study was put out by a group of French researchers that reviewed more than 70,000 people over the course of 5 years.

The study was powerful because of the large pool of people pulled from, and extensive time over which data was collected.
They found that people who ate mostly organic foods had 25% fewer diagnoses of cancer. People who did not eat organic had a higher risk.

These researchers reported that breast cancer and lymphoma incidents were especially low, though they do not yet understand why.
Though continued research is essential, when you consider the ways organic foods forbid the use of harsh chemicals like pesticides and herbicides, it begins to make sense.
Within the same study, researchers noted:

“A recent review concluded that the role of pesticides for the risk of cancer could not be doubted given the growing body of evidence linking cancer development to pesticide exposure.”
In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer acknowledged that pesticides are carcinogenic (cancer-causing) for humans.

Pesticides and herbicides are harmful not just as toxins your body has to deal with and attempt to flush out…

But also due to the damage, they do to your cells and even your DNA. These chemicals affect how your cells form and, ultimately, how they perform.

Additionally, they can act as a switch that turns on and off genetic triggers that may be in your genes (epigenetic consequences).

Suppose specific genes are turned off or on.

In that case, you could become more susceptible to certain diseases that otherwise wouldn’t have been triggered.

In the same way, it could make you less able to overcome something because your immune system (or any other system in your body) becomes too weak.

Every day we learn more about how frequently we are exposed to pesticides and herbicides through water, air, and the food chain.

A 2018 European Food Safety Authority report stated:
“44% of conventionally produced food samples contained 1 or more quantifiable residues [of pesticides].”
And food in Europe is known for standards that are much better quality than the US.

In fact, according to a 2018 report from the US Food and Drug Agency (FDA),
“Over 99 percent of the products sampled through PDP (Pesticide Data Program) had residues”.
Experts have found pesticides in the urine of people from all ways of life around the globe… And even in newborn babies!

And yet, pesticides are only half of the problem.

Herbicides are also a major concern and banned in organic foods, which are chemicals used to kill plants.

Commercially, herbicides are usually used to prevent weeds from over-growing and affecting a crop.

The most famous of these plant-killing chemicals is glyphosate--the main ingredient in RoundUp.

There have been thousands of lawsuits against the makers of RoundUp, concerning glyphosate causing cancer.

There is no question about how widespread pesticides and herbicides are and the damage they can do.

The bottom line seems to be that if you want to do all you can to avoid cancer, you will include organic foods wherever possible.

BUT…

There is even more to the study held by the researchers in France. Their results showed that just eating more organic food wasn’t enough.

They saw that cancer risks are higher if your main diet still contains mainly low-quality or even medium-quality foods...

It wasn’t enough to eat a few organic items sometimes and eat a diet full of sugars, fats, unhealthy calories, and chemicals the rest of the time.

These people in the study had just as high a risk of all cancers as those that never ate organic.

The GMO Debate

One distinction of truly organic foods is that they cannot be grown from genetically modified seeds, which would make them genetically modified organisms, GMOs...

Foods that have been modified in such a way that when you spray them with toxic pesticides and herbicides, they will not die.

The weeds and pests die, the plant does not.

So if you eat GMO foods, you are definitely consuming toxic chemicals, too.

Similarly, certain pesticides are used to ripen or protect crops after harvest. GMO crops are often heavily sprayed to speed up ripening.

Such treatments can also prevent early rot or other decay that can happen during processing and transport.

Right now there isn’t enough evidence to say that GMOs increase cancer risks. However, knowing that the risks of cancer are lowered by up to 25% by eating organic — foods that are NOT GMOs—you have to wonder.

It might be a case of safer than sorry if nothing else.

And, of course, by choosing organic you know you won’t be consuming so many toxic chemicals, like glyphosate!

Practical Takeaways

Considering all the above, it really is a shame that organic foods are usually so much more expensive than non-organic.

Luckily this is changing in some parts of North America.

These days you can often find a bunch of organic bananas for the same price or even lower than non-organic bananas.

As people shift to make organic a priority in their lifestyle, more and more producers are popping up, helping bring the cost down.

Whatever the case may be where you live, the question of whether it’s worth the investment comes down to you.

While your budget may be a very real consideration, when in doubt, it may help to think about this:
Is it in my best interest to spend more on this now (and less on something else) or possibly pay far more in healthcare and medications later?
The answer will be unique to you, but we have a few tips to help get you started:
  1. Think beyond produce. It’s not just fruit and veggies you need to consider. It’s meat, tofu, spices, herbs, and even supplements. Choose organic products whenever you can.
  2. Avoid the “Dirty Dozen.” These are 12 foods that absorb and contain high amounts of pesticides when not organic:

    1. Strawberries
    2. Spinach
    3. Kale
    4. Nectarines
    5. Apples
    6. Grapes
    7. Peaches
    8. Cherries
    9. Pears
    10. Tomatoes
    11. Celery
    12. Potatoes

    These are foods that you should always try to buy in certified organic form.
  3. Focus on the “Clean 15”. The following fruits and veggies do not seem to absorb pesticides in the same way as those above:

    1. Avocados
    2. Sweet corn*
    3. Pineapple
    4. Onions
    5. Papaya
    6. Sweet peas (frozen)
    7. Eggplants
    8. Asparagus
    9. Cauliflower
    10. Cantaloupes
    11. Broccoli
    12. Mushrooms
    13. Cabbage
    14. Honeydew melon
    15. Kiwifruit

    If you have a lean budget, choosing from this list is helpful. However…

    *It’s important to note that this list above includes corn. Unfortunately, corn is one of the most common foods grown from GMO seeds.

    So, even though it may not absorb as many chemicals as other plants, if you are trying to avoid GMOs, you may want to curb your corn cravings.
  4. Know your GMOs. Corn, cotton (for oil), soybeans, canola (for oil), squash, zucchini, and papaya are popular GMOs.
  5. Choose grass-finished meat. Grass-fed meat does not mean it’s organic. Grass-fed can mean that for some portion of an animal’s life it was fed grass.

    The length of time is not determined. Normally at the end of their lives, grass-fed animals are fattened up on regular, GMO-filled feed. Grass for a time. GMO-feed for a time.

    On the other hand, grass-finished are animals that are ONLY fed grass. This is the best type of animal protein to look for.
  6. Choose certified glyphosate free. Some companies are so dedicated to the cleanliness of their products that they are having them third-party tested to prove that they are free of one of the most common (and deadly) herbicides - glyphosate.

    “Glyphosate free” is a great option if you want to have the cleanest foods and products, possible.
The bottom line:

YES! Organic foods can make a difference in preventing cancer. Do your best when choosing foods, seasonings, and even supplements you are going to consume…

And remember that it’s important to have an all-around healthy diet to really take full advantage of the benefits that organic products can offer.

New Artificial Heart Valve Can Grow With Kids, Eliminate Surgeries

An expandable artificial heart valve could save children with congenital heart disease from repeated open heart surgeries as they grow up, researchers report.

Current artificial heart valves are fixed in size, meaning children need to get larger ones as they grow. Children who receive their first artificial valve before age 2 will require up to five open-heart operations before they become adults.

This new design means children could keep the same artificial heart valve until adulthood, and it could also benefit adults with heart valve defects, according to a Boston Children's Hospital team.

Current artificial heart valves have three leaflets — tiny flaps that provide a one-way inlet or outlet for blood to keep it flowing in the right direction. This new valve has two leaflets, and as a patient grows it can be expanded through a minimally invasive balloon catheter procedure.

Lab tests, computer simulations, and extensive testing in animals show that the new artificial valve works across a wide range of sizes, and remains functional when expanded, according to a study published online in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

A human clinical trial could begin within one or two years, according to the researchers.

Each year, more than 330,000 children worldwide are born with a heart valve defect, and millions of others develop rheumatic heart disease requiring valve replacement.

Moms Can Help Kids Stay Heart-Healthy

Actress Meg Tilly ("The Big Chill") opted to get out of the limelight while raising her children. As she told People magazine, she wanted to "make sure they had a hot breakfast every morning."

• Healthy LDL cholesterol level

• Healthy glucose level

If you’ve reached zero to two of those goals, your grown offspring are at high risk for early heart disease.

Three to four puts your adult children at intermediate risk.

Hit four or five? You're what the researchers call ideal — and so are the chances for your children's long-term heart health.

If you aren’t motivated to upgrade your lifestyle for your own well-being, do it for your growing children.

The Penumbral Lunar Eclipse And Our Spiritual Hygiene

There are four to seven eclipses of several varieties every year, and while each has their own meaning, they all share a sentiment in common…

They herald change.

Monday evening marked the beginning of a period from November 30th to December 14th during which two eclipses will come to pass.

The more we’ve retreated inwards, the less connected we’ve become to the cycles and events of the galaxy, the sky, and the great energy field that’s all around us.

Being able to connect to the expansive openness and huge, lumbering, and interconnected movements of the universe is like a muscle – and most of us are busy with practical matters, exercising our retirement-account-muscles and our meal-planning-with-three-children strength.

But let’s use this unique cascade of happenings, in what is certainly a year like no other, as a chance to reconnect with the world that houses us all and understand its cosmic rumblings.

Because it’s certainly trying to tell us something, and in a year as fraught with pain, miscommunication, and outright villainy, it’s our absolute responsibility to maintain our own spiritual hygiene.

Starting with what happened on Monday night…

The Penumbral Lunar Eclipse in Gemini

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun and the Moon are on exactly opposite sides of the Earth. The shadow of the Earth falls across the Moon, blocking illumination.

A penumbral lunar eclipse, which is harder to see than a partial or total lunar eclipse, means that it’s the outer rather than inner shadow of the Earth that’s blocking the Moon.
There are a few significant astrological moments involved in such a lunar eclipse…

The first is that all eclipses must occur during a full moon. A full moon marks the end of the lunar cycle, the rising action that culminates in climax, and the beginning of a new cycle. Although popular literature and cultural references tend to cast the full moon as a harbinger of all kinds of creepy goings-on, it is true that it’s connected to our spiritual cycles.​
A full moon is a chance to reflect on who you were and how you showed up during the last cycle, and make a decision about what you’ll carry with you into the next lunar cycle.

We know that there is a full moon every 29.5 days. Just about once a month, our emotional journeys crescendo and are reborn.

When coupled with the resonance of change brought on by a penumbral lunar eclipse, which occurs with unmeasured infrequency at somewhere between 0 and 9 times ever 100 years, a sense of completion reverberates from this astrological event.

What kind of completion? Where are we looking to trim the fat off of our lives?

Well, that depends on which axis is being activated…
November 2020 - December 2020 Gemini-Sagittarius Axis

Lunar Nodes are places where the Moon crosses the Sun’s path. On May 5th of this year, the North Node moved into Gemini while the South Node moved into Sagittarius, and we’ll stay traveling on this axis until January of 2022.

This lunar eclipse is in Gemini – in two weeks, the solar eclipse will be in Sagittarius.
Think about the themes that Gemini and Sagittarius have in common – travel, education, wisdom, communication, language, adventure. When we moved into this axis in May, recall how many of those themes mutated and showed up differently than they had.

We became isolated, unable to travel, forced to revolutionize our learning systems, and we had to find new and efficient ways to communicate with people we’d never had to consider before – our bosses, coworkers, family members, distanced friends.

Because the moon governs the subconscious, and our subconscious is teeming with changes related to Gemini and Sagittarius threads, these two eclipses will close one loop and open another.

Around and after the lunar eclipse, you’ll likely find yourself beset by information. That the lunar eclipse is in Gemini suggests there will be finer details coming to light that you’ll have to choose how to handle.

This lunar eclipse will be about three times more charged with energy than the average, and so will require our careful deliberation about how we communicate and to what end.

Especially as regards letting go of things that have stymied us since the last lunar eclipse…

The Solar Eclipse in Sagittarius

In the same way that lunar eclipses can only occur on a full moon, solar eclipses can only occur on a new moon.

On December 14th, there will be a solar eclipse on the new moon in Sagittarius.

That means you’ve got spiritual homework.

Between now and the solar eclipse, you’ll have to do some work in your life garden. What have you allowed to bloom this year? What have you fed? What’s withering? Where are your weeds cropping up?

What needs to be pulled out and trashed so that as the lunar eclipse harkens an ending, the solar eclipse beckons a beginning?

The New Year is upon us (somehow), and this is the perfect time to work on your spiritual hygiene.​

Diet Drinks Hike Stroke Risk

Artificially sweetened sodas were developed in the 1960s as a way to lose weight. But several years ago, studies began showing that people who consumed diet drinks didn’t lose weight.

In fact, research eventually began to demonstrate that those who drank diet drinks actually ended up fatter than those who didn’t. And the evidence against diet soda has continued to mount, with a new study published in the journal Stroke pointing to stroke risk.

Special: Brain Doctor: Simple Way to Stay Mentally Sharp

Researchers looked at more than 81,000 women in the large, population-based Women’s Health Initiative, and found that those who drank more diet drinks had a higher risk of stroke and heart disease, as well as a higher risk of dying early from any cause.

After a follow up of nearly 12 years, the researchers discovered that those who drank two or more artificially sweetened drinks per day (either soda or juice) had a 23% higher risk of having any type of stroke, and a 31% higher risk of clotting in brain blood vessels, compared to women who drank just one diet beverage a week.

Of particular concern was the fact that most of these strokes occurred in the smaller blood vessels of the brain, a factor that has been linked to higher risk for dementia.

Don’t fall for the ad campaigns. Stay away from both sugary and artificially flavored drinks. Pour yourself a cool glass of water, and infuse it with lemon, lime, or cucumber for a refreshing drink.

Cancer rates are rising around the world.

It used to be that 1 in 3 people would be affected. The latest information from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates that 40% of people will get cancer at some point in their lives.

Naturally, you may wonder:

Is there anything I can do to prevent cancer?

If you listen to the newspapers or the natural health gurus, it’s easy to become confused by all the advice.

One day a particular food is right for you… the next day it’s terrible.

Well, we did the research for you, from Harvard University to the National Cancer Institute, to help you successfully avoid and fight cancer.

These are the top issues to think about and take action on...

The Top 5 Tips to Avoid Cancer

1. Eat a Healthy Diet

According to a 2018 report by a panel of twenty-one well-regarded scientists from top institutions and universities worldwide (representing a 5-year review of over 7,000 studies), the only thing you should be super-sizing is your salad.

These distinguished cancer experts recommend that you eat at least 5 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables a day.

The idea is to center your meal around plants and make other additions to the “side dish.”

Your main goal is to eat a wide variety of produce to get a wide range of vitamins and minerals.

A diverse range of fresh produce will give you valuable micronutrients, and most are chock full of antioxidants.

Antioxidants are essential because they get rid of free radicals in the body.

These molecules cause tissue damage, excessive inflammation, cardiovascular concerns, and more. Inflammation is considered the root of most diseases, especially cancer.

Whenever possible, choose organic.

As discussed in our last Cancer Answer, research shows that eating a healthy diet based on mostly organic foods reduces cancer risk by up to 25%.

Just as there are foods to emphasize in a healthy diet, there are also foods to avoid...

This list includes just what you would expect: sugary drinks, junk foods, most processed, refined, packaged foods, and excess alcohol.

Another recommendation is to eat less meat, especially grilled.

That’s because when cooking meat at high temperatures, it produces two carcinogenic (cancer-causing) byproducts — HCAs (heterocyclic amines) and PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons).

This mainly occurs when you “char” it.

This extensive report mentioned above recommends eating as little red meat and processed meats as possible.

Instead, you can choose fish or poultry, but make sure not to char your animal protein when you cook it.

2. Exercise

A study from researchers at the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society shows that regular exercise lowers the risk for 13 types of cancer, including breast, colorectal, and lung cancer (in both current and former smokers).

We all know that exercise is good for you across the board.

Further, experts believe that physical activity helps prevent cancer by helping keep weight balanced, reducing inflammation, and boosting the immune system.

It’s also beneficial for stabilizing blood sugars, which also contribute to weight management.

In an interview with the LA Times, Professor James Levine of the Mayo Clinic said,
"Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV, and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death. The chair is out to kill us."
The lesson from that vivid wording is we need to MOVE more.

Whatever your setbacks, it’s possible to get creative and find ways to move more. Any activity is better than none, and there are many exercises you can do on a chair or even in bed.

Even a daily walk is beneficial. The key is to do something to move as often as possible. There’s no downside and plenty of upside for your health while working towards avoiding cancer.

3. Get Regular Medical Care

It was once common to get a yearly check-up from your doctor.

These days, you may be one of the many people who only seek medical care after you have symptoms of some sort.

It turns out that regular screening and checkups can help your doctor spot potential issues earlier.

In turn, this could go a long way toward preventing cancer.

At worst, routine medical care can increase the odds of finding cancer far earlier, when the chances of beating it are even stronger.

If you’re in between checkups, there are specific symptoms you should always get checked out by your doctor, just in case.

The American Cancer Society developed this list:
  • C: Change in bowel or bladder habits
  • A: A sore that does not heal
  • U: Unusual bleeding or discharge
  • T: Thickening or lump in the breast or elsewhere
  • I: Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing
  • O: Obvious change in a wart or mole
  • N: Nagging cough or hoarseness

4. Avoid Tobacco

This recommendation is pretty simple: avoid tobacco in all its forms, including second-hand smoke.

According to the American Cancer Society,
“Smoking causes about 20% of all cancers and about 30% of all cancer deaths in the United States. About 80% of lung cancers, as well as about 80% of all lung cancer deaths, are due to smoking. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women.”
However, smoking and tobacco also increase your risk of other cancers. These include:
  • Liver
  • Bladder
  • Pancreatic
  • Cervical
  • Stomach
  • Colo-rectal
  • Kidney
  • Mouth
  • Larynx and Pharynx

5. Protect Your Skin

Skin cancer is not only one of the most common types of cancer in the USA. It’s also one of the most preventable.

All it takes is protection.

But it’s not just people living in the sunnier states that need to be cautious about sun exposure.

It’s all about the UV rays, which includes tanning beds. In all cases, it’s important to start protecting your skin as early as possible.

When it comes to tanning beds, research shows that youth who begin tanning before 18 have an 85% higher risk of developing melanoma. Starting between 18-24 years old increases this risk even more, to 91%.

It’s also important to remember that every skin color can develop skin cancer. That said, if you have light-colored eyes, fair skin, freckles, and red or blond hair, your risk is higher.

In all cases, regular screening and protecting your skin can save your life.

6. Bonus Tip: Watch Your Weight

Sure, we all want to look and feel our best, but a healthy weight is also significant for cancer prevention.

What if we told you that some experts estimate that every pound of extra weight increases your risk for cancer?

Some estimates put that risk as high as 300% of an increased risk for just 25lbs of excess weight!

Experts across the board agree, staying lean helps towards avoiding cancer. In contrast, obesity creates more risk.

One of the reasons excess fat is so harmful is because of the inflammation it creates.

Not only this, fat cells produce hormones and other chemical reactions that influence your immune system and other vital processes.

Even just losing 5-10% of your excess weight can make a big difference, help reduce inflammation and lower your cancer risk.

  • Skin cancer is preventable.
  • Get regular screenings.
  • Avoid over or direct exposure to the sun. Tanning beds are also damaging.
  • Anyone can get skin cancer, but lighter skin is more vulnerable.
6. Lose Weight:
  • Excess weight creates inflammation and affects hormone balance. Several cancers are affected by hormones. Inflammation is a leading cause of cancer.
  • All weight loss efforts will work toward cancer prevention. The closer you can get to a healthy weight and BMI, the better protected you will be.
  • A healthy diet and exercise can help!
It’s never too late to start working to prevent cancer.

Even if you just take one step, you’re bettering your odds. Of course, nothing is guaranteed, but experts agree that your best hope for avoiding cancer is to make all these tips a lifestyle.
