It’s hard to believe, but I just turned 61.

Most people approach a new decade of life with a certain attitude of discontent or fear. But not me—I am thrilled to be diving into my 60’s head first.

In fact, this year I’ve already gone on a horseback riding trip with my daughter through Utah and cross-country skiing around the beautiful Berkshire mountains. And I have so much more planned.

Right now everyone is focused on COVID-19. Testing, masking, vaccines, and preventing the spread of the virus. So, anytime anyone feels the slightest bit ill, COVID-19 is the first thing on everyone's minds.



Our laser focus on the "Covid Pandemic" may seem like the right thing to do, but unfortunately, when Physicians have a single focus on a single virus it can hurt many people.



Recently, someone close to me experienced a fever, along with pain in his back. The first thing he was instructed to do was get a COVID-19 test - even his close friends had discussed it amongst themselves and decided that he "better get a test". While awaiting the results, his fever passed and he started experiencing chest and neck pain. He was then told that it might be pneumonia. That's when the COVID test came back negative - his wife and friends were overjoyed, and the next day he thought he'd try to get some work done.



He didn't have COVID, so everyone started to let their guard down, including his doctor.



A couple days later he was in the hospital with Pericarditis, which is a pretty scary heart condition. Luckily, after some treatment and two nights in the hospital, he was back home recovering. And he was lucky, and smart enough to go to the hospital when something didn't feel right.



Stroke, heart disease, cancer, and lung diseases — the leading causes of death in the U.S. — have not gone away just because Covid-19 has emerged. It concerns me that patients and doctors are potentially missing or ignoring worrisome symptoms unrelated to Covid-19 and not addressing them, since this interruption of care for patients with chronic conditions can lead to disastrous outcomes.



Part of the problem is seeing everything through a coronavirus lens. There are catastrophic risks when doctors and patients wear Covid-19 blinders.



There are widespread reports of fewer visits in emergency departments and doctors’ offices for strokes, heart attacks, and routine medical care. And this means less early detection and more fatal outcomes.



My friend was smart to go to the ER based on his instincts of just not feeling right. And he was lucky that his condition was not yet severe. For many others, this is not the case. They are told to stay home and wait for the symptoms to progress.



This is unacceptable under any circumstance, and it not only wrong, but in many cases can be fatal.



I will encourage my friend to do some additional testing to determine what the cause of the inflammation was that triggered the pericarditis, so we can prevent it from happening again.



Conventional medicine will often prescribe medication, monitor your condition, and recommend procedures, but they do little to investigate the root cause and restore function to the body.



If you are experiencing symptoms that are more than a common cold and your COVID test comes back negative, keep searching for answers regarding why you are experiencing symptoms. Even if those symptoms have been with you for a while (Especially if they have!)



It is now more important than ever to understand your symptoms and what they mean for your body. Having the foundational knowledge of how your body works and being able to decode the signs of dysfunction is one of the most valuable tools you can have in this day and age.



Not only does it improve your overall wellness, reducing inflammation and restoring function to the body and protecting you from viruses and other pathogens, lowering the severity of your illness should you become infected.....

Elderly Cardiac Patients Should Receive Aggressive Treatment

People over the age of 80 who suffer a heart attack could benefit from the more aggressive treatments they may not be offered because of their age.

A Norwegian study focused on how older people who suffer a certain type of heart attack, known as NSTEMI, are treated. This is a type of heart attack which appears mild at first, but actually causes more deaths over time.

Special: More Than 50% of Older Americans Fail to Get Enough Magnesium

The researchers randomly assigned 458 patients into two groups. Half of the patients were treated conservatively with drugs, while the others received more aggressive testing.

If the results warranted, they underwent stenting, heart bypass surgery, or were given medication.

The results showed that those people who received the aggressive treatment were 47% less likely to suffer a subsequent heart attack, require emergency cardiac treatment, suffer a stroke, or die, according to the researchers.

Epsom Salt Baths

You can help restore balance to your largest organ – your skin – as well as to your internal organs by soaking in an Epsom salts bath.

Epsom salts contain magnesium, and many of us are magnesium-deficient without realizing it. Lack of magnesium can lead to increased pain, constipation, anxiety and insomnia.

The sulfur in Epsom salts is needed for your liver's function. And it couldn’t be easier to prepare a soothing and nourishing bath.

Pour two cups of Epsom salts (you can buy at most drugstores and health food stores) into the water while the faucet is running comfortably warm water.

If you’d like, you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to aid in your relaxation and detoxification and help promote sleep before bedtime.

Question: I am 75 years old and have painful arthritis in my right knee. My doctor said I need a knee replacement. Are there supplements I can take to heal my arthritis without surgery?
Unfortunately, arthritis of the joints is very common these days, particularly in the elderly. One of the major causes is eating a poor diet full of refined sugar, flour, and salt, and not drinking enough water.
It is important to eat a diet with whole foods, and avoid refined food products. Furthermore, it is vitally important to drink adequate amounts of water to prevent dehydration. Take your weight in pounds, divide by two and drink that amount of water in ounces per day.

One supplement that can help with arthritis is called methylsulfonylmethane, or MSM, which supplies a readily available form of sulfur. The cartilage in the joints needs adequate amounts of sulfur to maintain proper function.
Other supplements that help with arthritis include glucosamine and turmeric, as well as bromelain and EGCG from green tea. Limbex is a supplement that I have formulated to help combat arthritis.
Keep in mind that if the arthritis is severe, especially when there is “bone on bone” in the X-rays with severely decreased range of motion, surgery may be indicated. At this point, joint replacement may be the best option.

The New Mind-Blowing Science of Breathing with James Nestor

It can be all too easy to take the body for granted, especially those functions that we don’t absolutely have to think about in order to survive. Breathing is one of those things, but it deserves more attention than most of us give it.

How well our body takes in oxygen impacts our health on every level. From how well we sleep to our stress response and even our metabolism, breath is an incredible tool for optimizing health. Today on The Broken Brain Podcast, Dhru talks to James Nestor about the forgotten power of breathing and how we can tap into it to dramatically improve how we feel.



James Nestor is an author and journalist who has written for Scientific American, Outside, The New York Times, and more. Breath explores how the human species has lost the ability to breathe properly—and how to get it back.

Nothing really matters if we’re not breathing the right way. James and Dhru jump into why breath is the anchor for all the systems in the body. Breathing predominantly through the nose has a much different impact on our health than mainly breathing through the mouth; we get 25% more oxygen by breathing in through the nose. We learn why that is and how evolution has changed the structure of our jaws and airways, relating to the epidemic of crooked teeth we see in modern cultures.

James shares how he enlisted in a Stanford University experiment to have his nasal cavities plugged, and was forced to breathe only through his mouth for 10 days in an effort to test how the pathways through which we breathe affect our health. He saw immediate changes to his blood pressure, sleep, and other functions, which reversed when he could begin predominant nasal breathing again.

James and Dhru also talk about stress. Breathing is one of our most powerful resources for reducing stress and regulating the parasympathetic nervous system. James shares one of the easiest variations of breathwork we can all do throughout the day to slow down and feel better.

2000 years ago it was pretty weird too.

A young couple, a cold night, a stable, and the birth of Jesus.

Whether you see that as a rich belief in your spiritual heritage or a rich story of culture that warms your heart or a confrontational message that makes you want to shut down...

there is a profound message hiding within for us all:

That in the midst of less than ideal circumstances, when you feel less than equipped, in an atmosphere that is less than comfortable, something of beauty, light, and love can be born.

I know it may be easier to focus right now on the darkness, the weirdness, the lost-ness of it all...
