There's no better time than now to give your heart and mind a little extra nourishment.

I want to share a Sanskrit poem by Kalidasa, an Indian playwright and poet who was active during the 4th and 5th centuries AD. It inspires me to make the most of each day, and I hope it will do the same for you.

Many folks silently starve themselves of the peace and contentedness that is waiting in every moment, convinced that it can only be experienced once a group of external pieces falls into place.

Why can't we be fully alive and activated right NOW?

Without further ado...

Look to this day,

for it is life, the very breath of life.

In its brief course lie

all the realities of your existence;

the bliss of growth,

Johnson & Johnson announced on Friday that its one-dose coronavirus vaccine provided strong protection against Covid-19, potentially offering the United States a third powerful tool in a desperate race against a worldwide rise in virus mutations.
But the results came with a significant cautionary note: The vaccine’s efficacy rate dropped from 72 percent in the United States to 57 percent in South Africa, where a highly contagious variant is driving most cases. Studies suggest that this variant also blunts the effectiveness of Covid vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Novavax. The variant has spread to at least 31 countries, including the United States, where two cases were documented this week.
Johnson & Johnson said that it planned to apply for emergency authorization of the vaccine from the Food and Drug Administration as soon as next week, putting it on track to receive clearance later in February.
“This is the pandemic vaccine that can make a difference with a single dose,” said Dr. Paul Stoffels, the chief scientific officer of Johnson & Johnson.
The company’s announcement comes as the Biden administration is pushing to immunize Americans faster even with a tight vaccine supply. White House officials have been counting on Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine to ease the shortfall. But the company may only have about seven million doses ready when the F.D.A. decides whether to authorize it, according to federal health officials familiar with its production, and about 30 million doses by early April.

8 Ways to Practice Compassion for a Healthier and Stronger Relationship​

11 good options instead of refined sugar
  • Raw honey — extremely nutritious and high in minerals, plus it’s actually GOOD for your immune system. Use it sparingly, because it has a similar impact on your blood sugar as sugar, and it’s high in calories.
  • Real maple syrup — rich in minerals, this whole-food is a great topping for oatmeal, and for beverages and dressings. But, it’s also high in calories.
  • Blackstrap molasses — has a unique and strong taste, but if you like it, it makes great ginger cookies and granola. It’s high in iron and B vitamins.
  • Yacon syrup — with a glycemic index of 1, it’s also one of the best sources of prebiotic fiber (which feeds the healthy bacteria in your gut).
  • Stevia — this non-caloric option is available as a powder or as a liquid (which I prefer), and it’s 200 times sweeter than sugar, so a little goes a long way.
  • Sucanat — this brand of dehydrated cane juice is essentially the unprocessed version of white sugar. It’s perfect for baking, but it’s still high in calories, with a high glycemic index.
  • Coconut palm sugar — my favorite option for baking, this option has a neutral taste, a glycemic index of 35, and is rich in minerals.
  • Raw dates — these fruits are extremely nutritious and sweet. I often put a couple of dates in my morning smoothie.
  • Mesquite — made from the pods of the mesquite tree, mesquite has a sweet, nutty flavor. It’s high in minerals, soluble fiber, and even has protein. Good for adding sweetness to smoothies and other beverages.
  • Lucuma — this super-fruit is rich in beta-carotene, iron, zinc, vitamin B3, calcium, magnesium, dietary fiber, protein, and even antioxidants. Plus, it has a glycemic index of only four!
  • Monk fruit — is a small melon native to eastern Asia that’s extremely high in antioxidants. It has zero calories, and is extremely sweet, like stevia.
The bad sugar alternatives — I recommend you stay away from these:
  • Fructose — excess amounts of fructose (as added sugars) are acid-forming, disease-promoting, and have to be converted to fat.
  • Agave — though it has a low glycemic index, agave is extremely high in fructose and easy to overuse. Many of the health claims made about it are true of the plant, but not of the processed agave syrup.
  • Erythritol, Xylitol, Maltitol, Sorbitol — these sugar alcohols have a low glycemic index, yet they are chemically altered so much that they aren’t absorbed well in the gut and may cause issues.
The ugly sugar alternatives — never EVER use these:
  • Saccharine (Sweet n Low) — this chemical sweetener was one of the first artificial sweeteners. It’s connected to cancer in animals (and likely humans).
  • Aspartame (e.g., NutraSweet, Equal) — this is one of the most neurotoxic foods ever created. It has more health complaints (reported to the FDA) against it than any other additive.
  • Sucralose (Splenda) — this one is linked to gut problems, weight gain, metabolic issues, and elevated insulin, and it can cause cancer-causing dioxins when used in cooking and baking.
  • Truvia — this is stevia-based, but it’s still chemically altered. It’s actually mostly erythritol (a sugar alcohol), with a highly concentrated stevia isolate.
  • Corn syrup — corn syrup is highly refined, and nearly all corn is genetically modified. It inflames and ages your cells, erodes your gut lining, and forms high amounts of acid.

But when does “protecting the public” become taking the public’s rights?

The researchers also observed that there was a 15 percent decline in dementia rates in people over 80.

That suggests that the steps people took to lower their risk of stroke probably helped stave off some types of dementia.

Or, having a stroke puts you at higher risk of dementia — so fewer strokes means less dementia.

Either way, make your double play and get both stroke and dementia off your home plate:

  • Stick with a diet rich in produce, olive oil and nuts, whole grains, and lean proteins.
  • Eliminate inflammation-triggering added sugars and syrups, and artificially sweetened beverages and foods, which are also associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke and dementia.
  • Keep blood pressure at less than 120 over 80; high blood pressure damages your circulatory system. It's the No. 1 cause of strokes.

Most women, when asked what they crave the most, say “chocolate.”
That’s barely surprising—a good-quality chocolate is loaded with magnesium, one mineral that many women are depleted of. You will therefore not see me ever demonize chocolate and you should not feel guilty or bad if you crave it. And if you do crave it, it just means you might need some comfort and probably magnesium.
With Rona around, cravings of all sorts (chocolate included), call to us more than ever before. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, even more so.
I don’t need to tell you that there’s no nutritional or health value in a Hershey bar—on the contrary, it’s a pretty toxic chocolate. Even “healthier” chocolate can come with additives, preservatives, and excess sugars.
I want to introduce you to a few types of chocolate that both satisfy sweet cravings and improve symptoms of perimenopause, such as hot flashes and night sweats.
If you’re going to enjoy chocolate, you may as well get a calming herbal boost, too.
DIY Option - Dong Quai Chocolate Bark

Dong Quai Chocolate Bark
Ingredients:

  • 12 ounces dark (70% cacao or higher) chocolate chips
  • ½ teaspoon dried dong quai root
  • 1 tablespoon raw sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon raw shelled pumpkin seeds
  • 2 tablespoons raw almond slivers
  • 2 tablespoons dried cranberries or cherries
Equipment: Double boiler, small baking
sheet (make sure it’s small enough
to fit into your freezer or refrigerator),
parchment paper
Makes: ~ 10 servings
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 8 minutes
Setting time: 30 minutes
Total time: 48 minutes
1. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler over medium heat, approximately 8 minutes.
2. Grind the dong quai in a coffee or spice grinder until powdery. Once the chocolate is smooth, remove from the heat and stir in dong quai.
3. Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper and pour the chocolate mixture over it. Sprinkle with the sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, almonds,
and dried cranberries. Transfer to the freezer for 30 minutes.
4. Use the tip of a sharp knife to break bark into smaller pieces.
Keeps well in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

In confined spaces, air purifiers may actually aid the spread of COVID-19 --*

In especially confined spaces, like an elevator, air purifiers may actually do more harm than good in the fight against airborne viral transmission.

Since the beginning of the global pandemic, healt officials have warned of the dangers of viral transmission in confined spaces where air circulation is limited.

In hospitals, powerful ventilation and air purification systems ensure air a regularly cleaned and recycled to prevent the accumulation and spread of viral aerosols. Similarly, in airplanes, air is constantly recycled to minimize the viral transmission.

The air in elevators is mostly stagnant, periodically stirred up by the opening and closing elevator doors. But some elevator manufacturers have attempted to solve this problem by installing air purification systems.

These attempts may be misguided, however, according to a new study published Tuesday in the journal Physics of Fluids.

Air purification systems don't impact the cleanliness of the air in a confined space, they also influence air circulation. Until now, authors of the new study argue, the effects of air purifiers on air circulation in confined spaces weren't well understood.

For the new study, researchers tweaked a model designed to simulate the spread of saliva aerosol droplets produced by a mild, unmasked cough. They then adapted the model to the 3D equivalent of a five-person elevator.

The team also modeled the effects of masks and different weather conditions on the movement of viral particles inside the elevator.

Next, researchers looked at how an air purification system, with different combinations of inflow and outflow positions, would influence the movement of air inside the elevator.

"We quantified the effect of air circulation on airborne virus transmission and showed that installing an air purifier inside an elevator alters the air circulation significantly but does not eliminate airborne transmission," study co-author Dimitris Drikakis, researcher at the University of Nicosia in Cyprus, said in a news release.

The simulations showed the risk of viral transmission inside the elevator was actually lowest in elevators with the least air circulation.

"This is due to reduced flow mixing inside the elevator," said Talib Dbouk, study co-author and Nicosia researcher. "Regulatory authorities should thus define the minimum ventilation required depending on the type of building."

According to the study's two authors, the model did not consider differences in the effectiveness of the virus-killing mechanism in different air purifiers.

While in most large spaces, the benefits of air purification outweigh the pitfalls of increased air circulation, in some small spaces, the latest research suggests more stagnant air may be best.

"Our results show that installing an air purifier may increase the droplet spread," Drikakis said. "The air intake integrated inside the purifier equipment induces flow circulation that can add to the transport of contaminated saliva droplets in the cabin."
