In any fight with heart disease, your captain is your cardiologist, who plays the leading role in this critical challenge.

There are many reasons you need a cardiologist you can count on — to make determinations based on your medical history, to order the right tests, to come up with the right diagnosis, to chart the correct treatment plan and adjust your medications, and to serve as your counselor and cheerleader in making heart-healthy lifestyle changes.

Here are some guidelines to aid your search for a good cardiologist. They are also excellent factors to look for when you are selecting an internist or any other type of specialist.

Start with a recommendation.

Stay local.

Be a diploma reader.
“Alpha Omega Alpha” means the doctor graduated in the top 10% of his or her class. Board-certified means a doctor has earned a medical degree from a qualified medical school, completed three to seven years of accredited residency training, is licensed by a state medical board, and has passed one or more exams.

Ask about health insurance to make sure he or she is in your network.

Consider hospital affiliation, as that will likely influence which hospital you would go to if the need arises.

Look for red flags to see if your doctor has been the subject of disciplinary action.

Check for conflicts of interest, such as an investor in laboratories or medical services or receives substantial fees from drug companies.

Read online reviews skeptically.

Notice the behavior of the doctor’s staff.
They are a reflection of the person they work for.

This is a presentation I gave recently for a wonderful event called The Greater Reset. In it I talk about the internal discussion many of us are having during this time.

As the world experiences more and more perceived persecution in the form of angry germs, tyrannical lockdowns, and the like—is there more to this victim story? And do we actually have the option to opt-out of this suffering, if we perhaps become more curious and resourceful in our thinking?
This Krishnamurti quote comes up often for me: "It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society."
And it raises the question, do we choose to compromise ourselves to fit in with that profoundly sick society? Or do we choose to find our voice, stand our ground, and hold the container in service of the whole?
If there’s one thing I’ve learned practicing what I’ll call “narrative-based medicine” it’s that the story we tell ourselves matters.
Your symptoms and feelings are personal messages to you, from you, about you. And if we can rewrite our victim stories, and exit the perpetual triangle of Persecutor > Victim > Savior, a world of seemingly endless possibilities opens up for us.
But we have to change our stories first.

Have you ever worried about your food?

Honestly, it starts to get super complicated and overwhelming with so many diet fads and everyone up on their soapbox telling you what to and not to eat. With all of these questions and all of this worry, we’ve made food much more troublesome than it needs to be.

Food should bring us joy. It should bring us together in community. It should be fun. It should be healthy for us and taste amazing.

In 2010, Pilar was diagnosed with stage III ovarian cancer and had a complete hysterectomy.

Air Quality Tied to Heart, Lung Problems

Poor air quality with high levels of tiny pollution particles known as PM 2.5 are tied to a spike in emergency department visits for heart- and lung-related illnesses and stroke, a California study suggests.

Based on analysis of areas affected by the intense 2015 California wildfire season, researchers found that within a day of residents being exposed to dense smoke, emergency room visits for heart attacks and other cardiac events and symptoms rose by 15% overall, and 42% among people over age 65.

Stroke and other cerebrovascular emergencies rose 17% overall, and 22% for older adults, the study team reports in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

"Wildfires have become a leading cause of short-term exposure to polluted air," said Ana Rappold of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Health and Environmental Effects Research Lab. "It's important to talk to people about how exposure to wildfire can impact their health."

Large-scale wildfires are projected to increase through the end of the century in many areas. Wildfire smoke contains several pollutants, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ash particles that have been associated with lung and heart problems.

It also contains tiny particles, smaller than 2.5 micrometers, that are produced by burning, such as found in wildfires, indoor cooking fires, and motor vehicle exhaust. These particles are small enough to enter the bloodstream from the lungs and are linked to inflammation, heart rhythm disturbances, and clotting issues, the authors write.
